John 'Jack' P. Chomos

Retired GATX foreman, Army veteran coached baseball

Funeral Mass will be Wednesday for John "Jack" P. Chomos, 7919 Third St., Masury. He died at 4:47 p.m. Sunday (3-18-01) in Specialty Hospital of Mahoning Valley, Youngstown, after a brief illness. He was 80.

Mr. Chomos was born Dec. 13, 1920, in Seminole, Fla., to Andrew and Mary Shinko Chomos.

An alumnus of Brookfield High School, he retired in 1983 after 32 years from General American Transportation Corp.'s former Masury plant, where he was a foreman.

An Army veteran, Mr. Chomos served as a staff sergeant in the 717th Tank Battalion during World War II. He was a recipient of the American Theatre Service Medal; Victory World War II Service Medal; European-African-Middle Eastern (EAME) Theatre Service Medal; and Good Conduct Medal.

Mr. Chomos was a charter member and a past commander from 1974-75 of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8860, Masury; and American Legion Post 432, Wheatland.

He also belonged to St. Bernadette's Church, Masury; Local 21 of Musicians, New Castle; and was a charter member of Knights of Columbus Council 3984, Masury.

Mr. Chomos was a former baseball coach in Brookfield Babe Ruth League and in the Shenango Valley Varsity League.

He enjoyed music.

His wife, the former Helen M. Hampton, whom he married Dec. 18, 1943, died Sept. 8, 2000.

Surviving are: two sons, George S. and Joseph P. Chomos, both Brookfield; a daughter, Paula K. Coon, Hubbard; a brother, Stephen Chomos, Williamsfield, Ohio; six grandchildren; and a great-grandson.

Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Andrew, Frank and William Chomos; and two sisters, Julie Nagy and Mary Kish.

Funeral will be Thursday for Thomas W. Egger, 1179 Hendersonville Road, Sandy Lake Township. He died at 5:50 p.m. Sunday (3-18-01) in UPMC Horizon, Greenville, after an extended illness. He was 55.

Mr. Egger was born Nov. 24, 1945, in Grove City to Andrew Thomas and Dorothey Helen Adams Egger.

He was a 1963 graduate of Lakeview High School and had worked for more than 17 years at the former Sharon Transformer Division of Westinghouse Electric Corp. Mr. Egger retired in 1998 from the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation, Franklin District office, after 10 years of service.

He was a member of Vincent United Methodist Church, Jackson Center, where he was very active in anything that was needed at the church.

Mr. Egger was a member of Free and Accepted Masons Lake Lodge 434, Sandy Lake.

He was an avid hunter and loved the outdoors. He also loved to pick wild berries.

Mr. Egger enjoyed gardening and spending time with his children and grandchildren.

He married Nancy G. Boitnott on Feb. 19, 1965. She survives.

Also surviving are: one daughter, Molly Frances Egger, Sandy Lake; two sons, William T. Egger and his wife Karen, Clarks Mills; and Ernest J. Egger and his wife Amy, Sandy Lake; four grandchildren, Darren Thomas Egger, Alaina Lee Egger, Thomas Allen Egger and Joseph Patrick Egger; three sisters, Mrs. Robert E. (Cheryl Egger) Carlson, Jackson Center; Mrs. David (Barbara) Wagner, Hermitage; and Mrs. Charles (Carolyn) Lewis, Jackson Center; six brothers, James C. Jaskowak; George A. and Jack P. Egger; and Marvin C. and Willie N. Gatewood, all Jackson Center; and David H. Gatewood, Mercer.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and his stepfather, D.C. Gatewood.

Former Greenville woman enjoyed crocheting, baking

Elaine Carole Pears, West Salem Township, formerly of Greenville, died at 11:30 a.m. Sunday (3-18-01) in St. Paul Homes, West Salem Township. She was 61.

Mrs. Pears was born Aug. 9, 1939, in Farrell to Charles and Katherine Yonchak Kozma.

She was a Protestant and enjoyed crocheting and baking.

Surviving are: three daughters, LaVonne Pears, Cortland; Mrs. James (Rebecca) Tinley, Cochise, Ariz.; and Mrs. Richard (Nora) McGarvey, Lewisberry, Pa.; a brother, Richard Kozma, Sharon; five grandchildren, Adam Frye, Greenville; Christian Manbeck, Masury; Mark Frye, Sharon; Patrick McGarvey, Lewisberry; and Joseph Tinley, Cochise; and a great-grandson, Ty Alexander Louden, Masury.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Charles Kozma; and an infant daughter.


Margaret L. Walker
Greater Morris Chapel AME member lived in Sharon

Funeral will be Saturday for Margaret L. Walker, 1185 French St. Extension, Sharon. She died at 6:10 a.m. Sunday (3-18-01) in the skilled care unit of Sharon Regional Health System. She was 75.

Mrs. Walker was born Nov. 10, 1925, in Farrell to James A. Robinson Sr. and Merrel Phillips Robinson.

She was a librarian for 10 years at Los Angeles City Library.

Mrs. Walker was a member of Greater Morris Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Farrell.

Her husband, Robert D. Walker, whom she married on Aug. 20, 1966, died in 1992.

Surviving are: a daughter, Mrs. Roger (Patricia) Woodbridge, Hitchcock, Texas; a son, William Walker, Cleveland; three sisters, Marie Mathews and S. Sally Pinson, both Sharon; and Marion Bush, Compton, Calif.; two brothers, the Rev. Cornelius E. Robinson, Farrell; and Gordon T. Robinson, Hanover, Md.; two grandchildren; a great-grandchild; and a brother-in-law, Glenn D. Walker, Sharon.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Gloria Boatwright; and four brothers, James A., J. Samuel, Harry A. and Charles A. Robinson.

Irene R. Trinkle

Homemaker was formerly of Brookfield, lived in Indiana

DYER, Ind. -- Irene R. Trinkle, Highland, Ind., formerly of Brookfield, passed away at 8:40 p.m. Friday (3-16-01) in Regency Place of Dyer. She was 78.

Mrs. Trinkle was born Feb. 16, 1923, in Hammond, Ind., to Joseph and Rose Pajak Wrona.

A homemaker, she was a member of Our Lady of Grace Church, Highland.

Mrs. Trinkle lived in Brookfield from 1969 to 1987.

Her husband, Edward J. Trinkle, whom she married on Oct. 25, 1952, died in January 1982.

Surviving are: two daughters, Karen Trinkle, St. Louis; and Patricia Trinkle, Highland; two brothers, Matt Wrona and his wife Jean, Wildwood, Fla.; and Eugene Wrona and his wife Joan, Tempe, Ariz.; one sister, Mrs. Henry (Christine) Soczyk, Calumet City, Ill.; many nieces and nephews; and numerous friends in Ohio.

James W. Byerly

Retired Sharpsville businessman lived in Ala.

MONTGOMERY, Ala. -- Funeral will be Wednesday for James W. Byerly, 3224 Hackberry Lane, Montgomery, formerly of Sharpsville. He died at 5:07 p.m. Sunday (3-18-01) in South Haven Nursing Home after a brief illness. He was 69.

Mr. Byerly was born Feb. 24, 1932, in Sharon to Harvey and Ella Brandon Byerly.

A graduate of Sharpsville High School, he was a Sharpsville businessman and retired after more than 50 years as owner and operator of the family business, General Woodcraft in Sharpsville.

He was a member of First Assembly of God in Hermitage and was a former member of Covenant Presbyterian Church in Sharon, where he was active in his younger years.

His first wife, the former Jeanette Porterfield, died in 1999.

Surviving are: his second wife, the former Clara Richburg; two sons, Richard J. Byerly and his wife Catherine, Sharon; and Timothy E. Byerly and his wife Linda, Macon, Ga.; five grandchildren, Nina Joyner, Trenna Crosan, Glenda Haun; and Daniel and Joshua Byerly; and two great-grandchildren, Amanda Crosan and Kaela Joyner.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Joseph Byerly.

Fredrick 'Fritz' Gunnar Karnell

Retired Grenville Tube plant boss worked here, in ark.

CLARKSVILLE, Ark. -- Fredrick "Fritz" Gunnar Karnell, Clarksville, formerly of Greenville and Sharon, died Saturday morning (3-17-01) in Johnson Regional Medical Center. He was 84.

Mr. Karnell was born April 4, 1916, in Plainfield, N.J., to Gunnar Herbert and Edith Wilhelmina Karnell.

He retired as a plant manager from Greenville Tube Corp.'s sites in Hempfield Township and Clarksville.

Mr. Karnell was a Lutheran and a member of Free and Accepted Masons.

Surviving are: his wife, the former Helen Ann Mliczek, at home; a daughter, Victoria Mary Roberts, London, Ark.; a son, Fredrick Gunnar Karnell Jr., Sharpsville; and three grandsons, Fredrick G. Karnell III, Philadelphia; and Matthew J. Karnell, Sharpsville; and Charles L. Roberts III, London.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and a son, Michael Anthony Karnell.

A funeral service will be held at 9 a.m. today (3-20-01) in Clarksville, with the Rev. William Wewers, pastor of Holy Redeemer Church, Clarksville, officiating. Pallbearers for the service were Donnie Carroll, James Paxton, Randy Palmer, Mike Harvey, James Lee Zieler and Jimmy Harmon.

Burial will be held in Oakland Cemetery in Clarksville.


Anna Homsey Komisin
Former Sharpsville woman was avid volunteer

NEW CASTLE -- Anna Homsey Komisin, New Castle, formerly of Sharpsville, died at 11:10 a.m. Monday (3-19-01) in Indian Creek Nursing Center. She was 80.

Mrs. Komisin was born Aug. 24, 1920, in Youngstown to Michael and Mary Kramer Homsey.

She worked at Daffin's Candy in Sharon and during World War II manufactured Mae West life preservers.

Mrs. Komisin was a member of St. John's Carpatho-Russian Orthodox Church in Sharon.

An avid volunteer, she worked with the Girl Scouts and Boys Scouts of America; Sharpsville Band Boosters; and as a seamstress with what was then the Sharon General Hospital Auxiliary.

Her husband, Michael Komisin, whom she married in 1947, died on Sept. 9, 1991.

Surviving are: a daughter, Mrs. Anthony (Natalie) Wojtkiewicz Jr., Ellwood City; and Michael Komisin, Neshannock Township, Lawrence County; four grandchildren, Anthony Wojtkiewicz III, Mary Wojtkiewicz, Michael Komisin and Kelly Nelson; and a great-granddaughter, Sunshine Nelson; a sister, Helen Vansuch, Orange, Calif.; and a brother, Frank Homsey, Youngstown.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Joe and Mike Homsey; and a sister, Mary Sklepko.

Ann M. Matovic

Champion crocheter was active in St. Mike's church

Mass of Christian burial will be Wednesday for Ann M. Matovic, 80 Fredonia Road, Hempfield Township, formerly of South Second Street in Greenville. She died Monday morning (3-19-01) in UPMC Horizon, Greenville. She was 82.

Mrs. Matovic was born April 4, 1918, in Youngstown to Stefan and Anna Krajcik Karabin.

She attended St. Matthias School and Woodrow Wilson High School, both in Youngstown.

As a member of St. Michael's Church in Greenville, Mrs. Matovic belonged to the Altar Rosary Society; the Booster Club; and Infant of Prague Guild; and taught Confraternity of Christian Doctrine classes for 10 years at the church.

A homemaker, she was a former leader for Girl Scouts of America.

She was a champion crocheter and won several awards, including a prize from Women's Day magazine.

Mrs. Matovic also loved gardening and flowers.

Her husband, Joseph P. Matovic, whom she married on Sept. 28, 1940, died Sept. 1, 2000.

Surviving are: three daughters, Mrs. John (Joan) Eastlake, South Williamsport, Pa.; Mrs. Ed (Rosemary) Daugherty, Greensboro, N.C.; and Mary Ann Albaugh, Dallas, N.C.; two sons, James J. Matovic, Bay Village, Ohio; and Frank M. Matovic, Preston, Conn.; 13 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Josephine Karabin; and three brothers, Jack, Steve and Al Karabin.

Gene D. Frampton

Harrisville retiree was formerly a GE engineer

Gene D. Frampton, Eau Claire Road, Harrisville, died at 7:14 a.m. Monday (3-19-01) in United Community Hospital, Pine Township. He was 72.

Mr. Frampton was born Jan. 20, 1929, in Harrisville to Vinter V. and Harriet Stillwagon Frampton.

A lifetime area resident, he was an alumnus of the former Harrisville High School and retired in 1995 as an estimator at C&J Plastics of Meadville. Mr. Frampton was formerly an engineer at General Electric Co., Grove City and Pine Township.

He was an Army veteran.

Mr. Frampton was a member of Harrisville United Methodist Church.

He also belonged to Free and Accepted Masons Cedar Lodge 800, Pine Township; Scottish Rite's New Castle Consistory; and Kentucky Order Colonel in Kentucky.

Surviving are: his wife, the former Correne A. McCandless, whom he married Oct. 2, 1954, at home; two sons, Daniel B. and Barry L. Frampton, both Harrisville; eight grandchildren; three sisters, Mrs. Donald (Louise) Bell, Harrisville; Mrs. Ernest (Sonja) Mase; and Susan Frampton, both Frankfort, Ky.; five brothers, Charles, Jerry, Larry and Samuel Frampton, all Harrisville; and Scott Frampton of Grove City.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Constance A. Frampton; a son, Gene David Frampton; two grandsons; a sister; and five brothers.

Sandra L. Lightner

'61 Hickory grad was pizza shop manager in Greenville

Funeral will be Thursday for Sandra L. Lightner, 31 S. High St., formerly of Columbia Avenue, both Greenville. She passed away unexpectedly at 8:50 p.m. Sunday (3-18-01) in her home of natural causes. She was 57.

Mrs. Lightner was born Oct. 25, 1943, in Sharon, the daughter of Peter and Edna Laycock Klein.

She was a 1961 graduate of Hickory High School.

Mrs. Lightner was employed as a manager of Pizza Joe's in Greenville, where she worked for more than 10 years.

She attended Shenango Valley Baptist Church in Hermitage.

Mrs. Lightner enjoyed the outdoors and fishing with her husband.

She also enjoyed collecting porcelain dolls.

Her husband, Thomas E. Lightner, whom she married Aug. 14, 2000, survives.

Also surviving are: three daughters, Mrs. John (Jonine M.) Borko, Hermitage; Mrs. Steven L. (Melinda M.) Van Sickle, Sheakleyville; and Mrs. Theodore R. (Colleene R.) Mercier, Clarks Mills; a son, Shane E. Ricketts and daughter-in-law, Christina A. Ricketts, Goldsboro, N.C.; her mother, Hermitage; two stepdaughters, Mrs. Mark (Karen) Disilvestri and Mrs. Thomas (Christine) Cooper, both Hermitage; a stepson, Kenneth Lightner and stepdaughter-in-law, Heidi, Sharps-ville; nine grandchildren; nine stepgrandchildren; and four stepgreat-grandchildren.

Her father preceded her in death.
