Today's obituaries Betty J. Murphy First UM Church member was Whitmer-Smith retiree Funeral will be Tuesday for Betty J. Murphy, formerly of 2183 Revere Drive, Hermitage, who died at 4 p.m. Friday (4-13-01) in Clepper Manor, Sharon, after an extended illness. She was 81. Mrs. Murphy was born Jan. 9, 1920, in Sharon, to William E. and Bessie Briggs Abernathy. She was a 1938 graduate of Sharon High School. Mrs. Murphy had been employed by the former Sharon Transformer Division of Westinghouse Electric Corp., in the cost accounting department and later retired from Whitmer-Smith department store, Sharon, in the mid 1980s. A lifetime member of First United Methodist Church, Sharon, she was an active member of the United Methodist Women and TMTM (The More The Merrier) class. Mrs. Murphy was a life member of the Order of Eastern Star Chapter 156, Farrell, and a member of the NNY (No Name Yet) card club for women. Her husband, Richard M. Murphy, whom she married Nov. 14, 1956, died July 21, 1983. Surviving are: a step-daughter, Mrs. Robert (Geraldine) McNeelege, Reynolds; three step-grandsons; several great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, Jack E. and George W. Abernathy Sr.; and by three sisters, Isabele Baxter, Ruth King and Margaret Caldwell. MURPHY W. Alton Snyder Sharpsville native retired as director of purchasing FUQUAY-VARINA, N.C. -- W. Alton Snyder died Tuesday (4-10-01) in Windsor Pointe Care Center following a lengthy illness. He was 82. Mr. Snyder was born May 8, 1918, in Sharpsville, to William H. and Elizabeth Freeman Snyder. A graduate of Sharpsville High School, he attended Case Western Reserve, Cleveland, Ohio. He married Myrtle I. (Saul) Snyder, Sept. 28, 1939. They lived in Pittsburgh; Hobe Sound, Fla.; Mount Vernon, Ohio; Carey and Holly Springs, N.C., during their 59 years of marriage. She preceded him in death Sept. 21, 1998. Mr. Snyder was an avid photographer throughout his life and is remembered for his robust portrayal of Santa Claus to hundreds of children from 1949 through 1997. He retired as director of purchasing for Shenango Inc., Neville Island, Pa., in 1980. He worked in the company's purchasing department at the Sharpsville and Neville Island plants during all of his 39 years with the company. Mr. Snyder was a member of Free and Accepted Masons, Lodge 517, Sharpsville; Valley of New Castle Consistory; Syria Shrine Temple, Pittsburgh; Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite, New Castle; and the Royal Order of Jesters, Court No. 2, Pittsburgh. Surviving are: a daughter, Judy (Joe) Divelbiss, Fredericktown, Ohio; a son, William A. Snyder, Holly Springs, N.C.; five grandchildren, William C. Snyder and Brandon M. Snyder, Holly Springs; J. Tracy (Sarah) Divelbiss, Wooster, Ohio; Wendy (Dave) Baker and Jennifer (Jason) Parker, Fredericktown; four great-grandchildren; and his dear and devoted friend, Cindy Callighan, Holly Springs. SNYDER Mary Katherine Hamburg St. Bartholomew's member was UPMC Horizon retiree Mary Katherine Hamburg, formerly of Hermitage and Sharpsville, died at 1:40 a.m. Saturday (4-14-01) in the hospital of Sharon Regional Health System. She was 82. Mrs. Hamburg was born Dec. 8, 1918, in Sharpsville, to William and Kathryn Welch Flowers. She was a 1936 graduate of Sharpsville High School. Mrs. Hamburg retired from UPMC Horizon, Farrell, where she had worked for more than 10 years in Central Supply. She had previously worked at the former Sharon Store prior to her marriage. A homemaker, Mrs. Hamburg was a lifelong member of St. Bartholomew's Church, Sharpsville. Her husband, Harry Joseph Hamburg, whom she married in Dec. 1946, died in April 1969. Surviving are: a stepdaughter, Mrs. Calvin (Margaret Ann) Songer, Galion, Ohio; a son, William J. Hamburg, Nashville, Tenn.; two stepsons, Harry E. Hamburg, Sharpsville; and George Thomas Hamburg, Boardman, Ohio; two sisters, Mrs. Edward (Margaret) Carney, Hermitage; and Mrs. Alice Holton, Pittsford, N.Y.; and three grandchildren. Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 19 Jefferson Ave., Sharon, PA 16146 or the American Heart Association, 3168 E. State St., Hermitage, PA 16148.
