Today's obituaries George R. Fye Shenango Steel retiree, WWII pilot lived in Py Twp. A funeral service will be held today for George R. Fye, 11 Edgewood Drive, Pymatuning Township. He died at 8 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 27, 2001, in his residence of natural causes. He was 79. Mr. Fye was born June 15, 1922, in Sharpsville to Rheuben and Ethel Clark Fye. A 1941 alumnus of Sharpsville High School, he retired in 1977 after 36½ years from the former Shenango Steel Inc. in Sharpsville, where he was a craneman. Mr. Fye served during World War II as a B-24 pilot in the Army Air Force, achieving the rank of corporal. He collected antiques and model airplanes. Mr. Fye also loved flea markets and flying. Surviving are: his wife, the former Dorothy N. Self, whom he married April 3, 1945, at home; two daughters, Mrs. Moss (Janice) Zahniser, Greenville; and Mrs. Edward (Melinda) Vroman, Titusville; and three granddaughters, Joy and Amy Zahniser; and Sarah Vroman. He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Alice Beil and Louella Stamm; a brother, Robert Fye; and an infant granddaughter, Jill Zahniser. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, 59 N. Crescent Drive, Hermitage 16148.
FYE Kenneth R. Kane Kenneth R. Kane, 2605 N. Neshannock Road, South Pymatuning Township, died at noon Friday (9-28-01) in Butler Veterans Affairs Medical Center. He was 76. Obituary information was incomplete.
KANE Mary I. Grimes Formerly of Sharon, teacher lived in Florida BRADENTON, Fla. -- Mary I. Grimes, Bradenton, formerly of Sharon, died at 8 p.m. Monday, Sept. 24, 2001, in Freedom Village Nursing Center. She was 93. Mrs. Grimes was born Oct. 14, 1907, in Waynesburg, Pa., to Samuel Iams and Mary Goodwin Iams. She moved to Bradenton in 1969 from Sharon. Mrs. Grimes was an elementary school teacher for a total of 38 years, including teaching at Beaver Valley Elementary School for 16 years. She was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church in Bradenton. Mrs. Grimes is survived by two sisters-in-law, Jeanette Iams, Muncy, Ind.; and Florence Iams, Cadiz, Ohio; and a nephew, Sherwin Iams, Waynesburg. Services were private for the family.
Gerald Joseph Glunt Retired Air Force master sgt. was Snyder's parts manager Gerald Joseph Glunt, 1490 Greenville Road, Jefferson Township, died 12:04 a.m. Friday (9-28-01) in United Community Hospital, Pine Township, after a brief illness. He was 55. Mr. Glunt was born Sept. 20, 1946, in Greenville to Robert H. and Martha Howard Glunt. A Vietnam veteran, he retired as a master sergeant after 20 years with the Air Force. Mr. Glunt was parts manager with Snyder Oldsmobile-Pontiac-Cadillac, Inc., Grove City. He was a member of Mercer United Methodist Church; Savannah Masonic Lodge, Guysville, Ohio; Harthegig Conservation Club, Fredonia; and National Rifle Association. Besides woodworking, he was an outdoorsman who enjoyed fishing, hunting and gardening. Surviving are: his wife, the former Kathy Warriner, whom he married 35 years ago on Sept. 24, 1966; two sons, Robert H. Glunt II, Dublin, Calif.; and Charles R. Glunt and his wife, Robin, Pope Air Force Base, N.C.; his father and his wife, Elizabeth, Mercer; a sister, Mrs. Steven (Nancy) Theiss, Mercer; a brother, Richard L. Glunt, Mercer; and three grandchildren. His mother and infant twin sisters preceded him in death.
GLUNT Joseph P. Phillips St. Anthony's member retired from Westinghouse A funeral service will be held Monday for Joseph P. Phillips, 3001 Lakewood Drive, Apartment 2201, Hermitage, formerly of Hamilton Avenue in Farrell. He died unexpectedly at 10:30 a.m. Thursday (9-27-01) in his residence. He was 69. He was born Dec. 13, 1931, in Farrell to Joseph and Mary Gasparac Phillips. Mr. Phillips was a 1949 graduate of Farrell High School. He also graduated in 1954 from Notre Dame (Ind.) University. He served in the Army. Before retiring in December 1989, he was employed by the former Sharon Transformer Division of Westinghouse Electric Corp. for 32 years as a systems analyst. Mr. Phillips attended St. Anthony's Catholic Church, Sharon. He was a member of the Croation Catholic Union Lodge 69, Farrell Knights of Columbus 4003, Westinghouse Retirees Club, volunteer services for AARP and its income tax assistance program for 12 years. Surviving are: his parents, Joseph and Mary Phillips, Hermitage; a brother, James, and his wife, Carole Phillips, South Bend, Ind.; two nieces and their husbands, Stephanie and James Cullinane, New Canaan, Conn.; and Mary Joe and John Hinson, Seattle; a nephew and his wife, James and Mary Phillips, Indianapolis; five grand nieces; and two grand nephews. Memorial contributions may be made to Joseph P. Phillips Memorial Fund, in care of St. Anthony's Catholic Church, 804 Idaho St., Sharon 16148.
PHILLIPS Ruth Ann Ashby Rodgers Wheatland-Farrell church member was nurse aide Funeral services will be held Monday (10-01-01) for Ruth Ann Ashby Rodgers of 1020 Roemer Blvd., Farrell. She passed away at 10:20 a.m. Friday (9-28-01) in UPMC Horizon, Farrell, following an extended illness. She was 43. She was born March 9, 1958, in Cleveland to Sherman E. Ashby Sr. and the late Georgia Ann Winwood Ashby. Mrs. Rodgers was a member of the Wheatland-Farrell United Methodist Church. Prior to her illness, she was employed for eight years as a nurse aide at O'Brien Memorial Health Care Center, Brookfield. A former member of the Slovak Home, Farrell, she enjoyed throwing darts and at one time was active in a dart league. Surviving are: her husband, Ted "Bill" Rodgers, whom she married Aug. 15, 1976; one daughter, Mrs. Justin (Kendra Lee) Nowaczynski, Jacksonville, N.C.; her father, who lives in Sharon; two sisters, Mrs. Donald W. (Sharon) Stinedurf, Wheatland, and Teresa L. Ashby, Sharon; four brothers, Sherman E. Ashby, Jr., Hermitage; Michael D. Ashby, Sharpsville; George R. Ashby, Wheatland; and William E. Ashby, New Smyrna Beach, Fla.; and a granddaughter, Aubrianna Marie Nowaczynski, Jacksonville, N.C. Her mother died Feb. 17, 1991. She also was preceded in death by a brother, Mark A. Wilkes.
