Joseph R. Vedilago Slippery Rock High senior was active in school clubs Joseph R. Vedilago of Seldom Seen Lane, Slippery Rock, died at 1:28 p.m. Tuesday in a car crash on West Liberty Road, Slippery Rock Township, Butler County. He was 18. Joseph was born July 2, 1983, in Queens, N.Y., to John and JoAnn C. Johnson Vedilago. He was a senior at Slippery Rock High School, where he was involved in marching band, drama club, the soccer team and Leadership Council. Joseph belonged to St. Peter's Church in Slippery Rock. Surviving are; his mother, Mrs. Daniel (JoAnn C.) Ferguson, at home; his father, in Gotenberg, Sweden; a brother, John Vedilago, and a sister, Sarah A. Ferguson, both at home; and paternal grandparents, Bernard J. and Elizabeth Ferguson, Westerly, R.I.
VEDILAGO Isaac Pose Retired Hermitage accountant served as WWII master sgt. Isaac Pose, 653 Cohasset Drive, Hermitage, died at 7:38 p.m. Monday, Dec. 31, 2001, in his home after an extended illness. He was 88. Mr. Pose was born Sept. 22, 1913, in Sharon to Morris and May Broadman Pose. He was a 1935 graduate of Youngstown State University and a public accountant, retiring as the accountant for the former Myer-Frank Furniture Co. in Farrell. A U.S. Army veteran, Mr. Pose served as a master sergeant in the China-Burma theater of operations during World War II. He was a member of Temple Beth Israel in Sharon. Surviving are: his wife, Cecelia Bender Pose, whom he married Aug. 11, 1957, at home; one brother, Lester Poes, Boynton Beach, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews. Mr. Pose was preceded in death by his parents.

SEE Barbara 'Bertha' Hornyak Former Farrell school worker was active in St. Ann's Funeral service will be Thursday for Barbara "Bertha" Hornyak of 4080 Wynwood Drive in South Pymatuning Township, formerly of Negley Street in Farrell. She passed away peacefully at 10:20 a.m. Monday (12-31-01) in Hospitality Care Center in Hermitage. She was 93. Mrs. Hornyak was born on Jan. 6, 1908, in Trauger, Pa., a daughter of Michael and Susan Vagasky Missik. She was employed for seven years in the 1980s by Farrell Area School District, where she worked in the housekeeping department. Mrs. Hornyak was an active member of St. Ann's Church in Farrell, where she was a member of the Infant Jesus of Prague Society. At the church, she also assisted in cleaning and helped with decorating for holy days. Her husband, Emil Hornyak, passed away on May 1, 1997. She is survived by: a daughter, Mrs. Charles (Barbara) Vranich, with whom she lived; a sister, Helen Palumbo, Brookfield; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Her husband and a son, Richard E. Hornyak, preceded her in death.

JOHNSTOWN, Pa. -- Mabel L. Hoffman, 68, Peterson Drive, Ideal Park, Johnstown, died Dec. 31, 2001, in Memorial Medical Center, Johnstown. She was born Oct. 7, 1933, in Mercer County, a daughter of William C. and Mary Amelia Wright Faulconbridge. She was a graduate of the former Stoneboro High School and was a lifetime member of Centennial United Methodist Church, Johnstown. Surviving are: her husband of 49 years, Richard Hoffman, and children: Robert L. Hopewell; David M. and his wife, the former Dawn Jayne Schwer, Central City, Pa.; Amanda M. Layman, State College, Pa.; John C. and his wife, the former Beth Walter, Mineral Point, Pa.; three brothers, Tom, in Arizona; and Jack and William, both Sandy Lake; two sisters, Ruth Fisher and Sadie Weaver, both of Jackson Center; and four grandchildren, Patricia Anne, Matthew Owen, Cameron and Braden. She was preceded in death by her parents, a brother and three sisters. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association.

FRAMPTON Ambrose C. Elliott Former Wolf Creek Twp. supervisor was retired farmer Ambrose C. Elliott, 178 Bell Road, Wolf Creek Township, died at 9 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2002, in his residence after a brief illness. He was 90. Mr. Elliott was born March 24, 1911, in Slippery Rock Township, Butler County, to Brose C. Elliott and Lottie Louise Hockenberry Elliott. He retired after more than 62 years as a self-employed farmer and was a former Wolf Creek Township supervisor. Mr. Elliott was a member of Wayside Community Church in Findley Township. His first wife, the former Grace Ellen Campbell, whom he married Dec. 25, 1933, died July 20, 1983. His second wife, the former Grace Houston Martin, whom he married Feb. 10, 1985, died June 26, 1995. Surviving are: four children, Evelyn C. Blom; Mrs. Richard C. (Patricia A.) Bicehouse; and Donald C. Elliott and his wife Peggy, all Grove City; and Mrs. William (Shirley L.) Jenkins, Sandy Lake; four stepchildren, Mrs. William (Evelyn) Habel; and Mrs. Edward (Jennifer "Jenny") Klink, both Fort Walton Beach, Fla.; Rebecca "Becky" Horstman, Colorado; and Leonard J. Martin, Cranberry Township, Butler County; one half-brother, John E. Wilson and his wife Marie Wilson, Grove City and Bradenton, Fla.; eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren and several stepgrandchildren and stepgreat-grandchildren. Beside his first and second wives, Mr. Elliott was preceded in death by his parents; his stepfather, Boyd Wilson; and one grandson, William Charles George. Harry 'Bud' Gilkey Former West Middlesex man was active in community WOOSTER, Ohio -- Harry "Bud" Gilkey, 3146 Oak Hill Road, Wooster, formerly of West Middlesex, died Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2002, in his residence. He was 73. Mr. Gilkey was born Nov. 29, 1928, in West Middlesex to Ralph and Martha Young Gilkey. He married the former Donna Hause on Dec. 16, 1949. She survives. Mr. Gilkey worked in sales all of his life, finally working for the Pennsylvania Railcar Co. He started a minor Little League in West Middlesex, where he was also a Boy Scout troop leader. Mr. Gilkey was an active member of Central Christian Church in Wooster, singing in the choir, and was also a member of the former Wayneaires and SPEBSQSA, a barbershop quartet organization. Bud enjoyed riding roller coasters and woodworking. Surviving in addition to his wife are: his children, Norman Gilkey and his wife Mary, Aliquippa, Pa.; Wayne Gilkey, Wooster; a daughter-in-law, Jane, wife of Gary Parnell, Shreve, Ohio; his grandchildren, Allie, Adri, Aaron and Becky Gilkey; and Martha, wife of Kyle Cook; a great-grandson, Brad Cook; his mother, Wooster; a sister, Joan, wife of Harmon Fennell, West Middlesex; a brother, Robert Gilkey and his wife, Eleen, Grove City; and stepsisters, Pat and Judy Young; and Kathy Hothem, all Wooster. She died at 10:25 a.m. Monday, Dec. 31, 2001, in the hospital of Sharon Regional Health System after an extended illness. She was 79. Mrs. Parker was born Feb. 22, 1922, in Sharon to John and Theresa Bohl Haas. A homemaker, she was a member for 45 years of Immaculate Heart of Mary Church in Mercer, where she had been very active, especially in its Altar Rosary Society. Her husband, Myers H. Parker, whom she married May 25, 1940, died Feb. 20, 1984. Surviving are: four daughters, Dorothy, wife of Howard Smith; and Christine, wife of Earl McLaughlin, both Mercer; Marlene, wife of Arthur McClellan, Jefferson, Ohio; and Roberta Yoder, Dixon, Calif.; two sons, Joseph Parker and his wife Joyce, Mercer; and Andrew Parker and his wife Mary, Grove City; nine grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Besides her husband, Mrs. Parker was preceded in death by her parents; four sisters, Barbara, Theresa and Anna Haas; and Madeline Sherman; and a brother, John Haas. JOYNER Rose Marie Fazzalore Branca Farrell school director was very active in community Rose Marie Fazzalore Branca, 913 Indiana Ave., Farrell, died at 10:33 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2002, in UPMC Horizon, Farrell, following a brief illness. She was 72. Mrs. Branca was born Sept. 24, 1929, in Sharon to Vincent J. and Theresa M. DeLise Fazzalore. An alumna of Farrell High School Class of 1947, she retired in 1992 after 30 years from the City of Farrell, where she was the head desk clerk. Previously she was a school crossing guard for the city. She was a current member since 1975 of Farrell Area School District Board of Education, for which she was current treasurer and the first female to serve as president. She also at one time served as vice president. Active in the community, she belonged to Midwestern Intermediate Unit IV Board of Directors; chairman of the Farrell Recreation Commission; and belonged to Farrell Booster Club; and Farrell Human Relations Commission. She was also a member of the Pennsylvania School Board Association; Farrell Alumni Association; and Fraternal Order of Police Joseph Volansky Memorial Lodge 34, Farrell. She also participated in the Farrell 100th Centennial Committee and was an avid fan and supporter of all Farrell High School teams and programs, especially the girls volleyball team. She was also the chief fund-raiser for the North-West Pennsylvania Volleyball Club, an off-season volleyball league. In 1994, she was recipient of the Farrell Alumni Association's Blue and Gold Award. She was a member of Our Lady of Fatima Church in Farrell and enjoyed spending time with her four grandchildren. She was married to Charles P. Branca on June 18, 1949. He died on March 18, 1976. She is survived by: her mother, Woodland Place, Coolspring Township; a daughter, Brenda M. Branca, Farrell, with whom she made her home; two sons, Charles "Chuck" J. Branca and his wife, Bonnie; and James "Jim" D. Branca and his wife Debra, both Farrell; two brothers, Frank Fazzalore and his wife Mary, Yardley, Pa.; and Vincent "Juicy" Fazzalore and his wife Elma, Hermitage; a stepbrother, the Rev. Alex Amico, Coalport, Pa.; and a stepsister, Mrs. John (Dolores) Masters, Sharon. Also surviving are four grandchildren, Amy, Abby, Jimmie and Jordan Branca. She was preceded in death by her father and a stepbrother, Paul Amico.
BRANCA Clifford L. Caldwell Hermitage man had been Anchor partner, Zem Zem Clifford L. Caldwell, Whispering Oaks, South Buhl Farm Drive, formerly of 5195 E. State St., both Hermitage, died at 10 a.m. Monday (12-31-01) in the hospital of Sharon Regional Health System following a brief illness. He was 87. Mr. Caldwell was born Oct. 12, 1914, in Hermitage, a son of William Hand Caldwell and Clara Titus Caldwell. A 1933 graduate of Hickory High School in Hermitage, he had been a partner in the former Anchor Drug Store at Stambaugh Avenue and East State Street in Sharon. As an active member of First United Methodist Church in Sharon, Mr. Caldwell served as head usher for many years and was a former member of the church administrative board. He was an honorary member and past master of Free and Accepted Masons Shenango Lodge 668, Sharon, now Shenango Valley Lodge 810 of Hermitage, for which he served as treasurer for 22 years. Mr. Caldwell also belonged to Scottish Rite's New Castle Consistory; Royal Order of Jesters; and was a life member of Zem Zem Shrine in Erie, where he was also a member of Zem Zem Motor Corps. His wife, the former Margaret "Peg" Abernathy, whom he married Sept. 13, 1938, died Dec. 26, 1994. Mr. Caldwell is survived by a stepsister, Mrs. Joseph (Agnes) French of Sharpsville.
