Rosalie Julia Mankas Antus
Retired switchboard operator belonged to St. Joseph's

Rosalie Julia Mankas Antus, 690 Smith Ave., Sharon, died at 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 3, 2002, in her home of natural causes. She was 77.

Mrs. Antus was born May 23, 1924, in Farrell to Matthew and Celia Bires Mankas.

A graduate of Farrell High School Class of 1942, she retired in 1989 as a switchboard operator from Sharon Regional Health System.

Mrs. Antus was a member of St. Joseph's Church in Sharon.

Her husband, John G. Antus, whom she married Sept. 11, 1954, died Feb. 26, 1988.

Surviving are: one daughter, Cecelia A. Olson, wife of Richard, Hermitage; one sister, Pauline Yoest, wife of Virgil, Sharon; and one granddaughter, Natalie Rose Olson, Hermitage.

Besides her husband, Mrs. Antus was preceded in death by her parents; one son, Jack M. Antus, who died April 1, 2000; two sisters, Anna Kuzel and Mary Sujka; and one brother, Donald Mankas.

William 'Bill' V. Lewis

Army vet was popular pitcher and Lakeview district retiree

William "Bill" V. Lewis, 12 Wood St., Stoneboro, died at 4:35 a.m. Friday (1-4-02) in UPMC Horizon, Farrell, after a brief illness. He was 85.

Mr. Lewis was born Feb. 16, 1916, in Jackson Township to William J. and Lona Mae Williams Lewis.

He attended the former Paoli Country School in Jackson Center and later, the former Sandy Lake High School.

Mr. Lewis retired in 1981 after 26 years of service in the maintenance department of Lakeview School District, where he also served as a school bus driver.

He was a Protestant.

An Army veteran, Mr. Lewis served during World War II.

He was a member of the National Rifle Association.

In his early years, Mr. Lewis was a popular baseball pitcher and was well known for his side-arm pitching style.

He enjoyed sports, especially hunting and auto racing.

He married Anna M. Barr on May 14, 1941, and she survives at home.

Also surviving are: two daughters, Mrs. Alan (Nancy) Young, Fredonia; and Mrs. Tom (Karen) Chatham, Polk; two brothers, James D. Lewis, Lisbon, Ohio; and Gene H. Lewis, Jackson Center; and two grandchildren, Becky Gould, Stoneboro; and Tom Chatham, Polk.

Mr. Lewis was preceded in death by his parents; and one stepbrother, C. Walter Carlson.

Alice M. Anderson

Alice M. Anderson, Hermitage, formerly of Mertz Towers, South Mercer Avenue, Sharpsville, died at 10 p.m. Thursday (1-3-02) in Nugent Convalescent Home, Hermitage. She was 85.

Mary A. Rowlands

Sharpsville native was homemaker in N.J.

MOUNT HOLLY, N.J. -- A Divine Liturgy will be held Saturday for Mary A. Rowlands of 9 Suffolk Court, Cherry Hill, N.J. She passed away at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2002, in Virtua Hospital in Mount Holly following a brief illness. She was 87.

Mrs. Rowlands was born March 20, 1914, in Sharpsville, a daughter of Andrew and Mary Kraynok Walko.

A homemaker, Mrs. Rowlands was a member of Sts. Peter and Paul Orthodox Church in Levittown, Pa., and was a former member of St. John's Carpatho-Russian Orthodox Church in Sharon.

Her husband, Charles H. Rowlands, whom she married on Sept. 23, 1939, passed away on Feb. 17, 1996.

Mrs. Rowlands is survived by two daughters, Maryann Gibilisco, Delran, N.J.; and Judith Rowlands, at home. She also leaves three sisters, Martha Soloninka and Helen Laycock, both Sharpsville; and Mrs. Robert (Kathryn) Zickar, Hermitage; and one brother, Joseph Walko and his wife Ruth, Sharpsville.

She leaves one grandson, Tory Gibilisco, Mount Laurel, N.J.

Her parents and one brother, Michael Walko, preceded her in death.

Melba M. Pfeifer

Apartment co-manager's greatest joy in life was family

A memorial Mass will be held Saturday for Melba M. Pfeifer, 405 Norris Ave., formerly of State Towers Apartments, 632 E. State St., both Sharon. She died at 1:05 a.m. Thursday (1-3-02) at UPMC Horizon in Farrell following a brief illness. She was 83.

Mrs. Pfeifer was born June 12, 1918, in Pittsburgh to Edward and Freda Deckler.

An alumna of South High School in Pittsburgh, she was manager for 20 years along with her husband of the former State Towers Apartments on East State Street in Sharon.

Mrs. Pfeifer was a member of St. Joseph's Church in Sharon.

Her greatest joy in life was her family.

Surviving are: her husband, George W. Pfeifer, whom she married Nov. 13, 1939, at home; one daughter, Mrs. Ronald (Carol) Valentine, New Castle; five grandchildren, Kent Moldovan and his wife Tracy; Lori Tennant and her husband Rick; Kimberley Ryder; Dr. Jeffrey Moldovan and his wife Janet; and Emilio Valentine and his wife Christine; and four great-grandchildren, Brody Tennant; and Patrick, Rachel and Katherine Moldovan.

Mrs. Pfeifer was preceded in death by her parents; one sister, Marie Deckler; and one brother, Norman Deckler.

Anastasia 'Stella' Mistretta

Hermitage homemaker enjoyed bowling, the Indians

A funeral Mass will be held Saturday for Anastasia "Stella" Mistretta of 396 W. Park St., Hermitage. She passed away unexpectedly at 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2002, in her residence of natural causes. She was 81.

Born Aug. 15, 1920, in Export, Pa., Mrs. Mistretta was a daughter of the late George and Anna Zatyuk Dohomila.

Mrs. Mistretta moved to the area in the late 1920s and attended Sharon schools.

A homemaker, she was a member of Church of the Sacred Heart in Sharon.

Stella was deeply devoted to her family and spent a considerable amount of time with them. They all enjoyed card playing and celebrating special occasions together. One of her most memorable occasions was a trip to the Ukraine in 1996 to visit family members.

She was a devoted Cleveland Indians fan and enjoyed bowling at Thornton Hall Lanes in Sharon with the Senior and Patagonia Kegler's leagues.

On Feb. 22, 1941, she married Samuel T. Mistretta. He preceded her in death on Feb. 2, 1996.

Survivors include: one daughter, Mrs. Mark (Donna M.) Gaus, Greenville; one son, Dr. Thomas D. Mistretta and his wife Mary, Hermitage; two sisters, Mary Roman, Greenville; and Anna Papp, Hermitage; three brothers, John Domila and his wife Rose, Hermitage; Michael Domila and his wife Sophia, Sharon; and Charles Domila, Mercer; and four grandchildren, Dr. David Mistretta and attorney Anthony Mistretta, both New Wilmington; Benjamin Riley, Edinboro; and Mrs. Andrew (Tammy) Coddington, Pittsburgh.

In addition to her parents and her husband, Stella was preceded in death by one sister, Sophia Antos; and one infant brother, George.
