Today's obituaries Michael R. Jager Michael R. Jager, Bentley House, Hermitage, died at 8:40 a.m. Sunday (1-6-02) in the intensive care unit of Sharon Regional Health System. He was 81. Obituary information was incomplete.
JAGER Mary Ann Zeka Sharon woman owned, ran taverns with husband A funeral service will be held Wednesday for Mary Ann Zeka of 954 Bonair Drive in Sharon. She passed away peacefully at 10:25 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 5, 2002, in her home following an extended illness. She was 68. Mrs. Zeka was born March 22, 1933, in Transfer, a daughter of Howard F. and Anna M. Gromowsky Dawes. She was a 1951 alumna of Sharpsville High School. A homemaker, Mrs. Zeka and her husband owned and operated three taverns in Sharon, Orangeville and Sharpsville. She enjoyed the outdoors and loved sunbathing, fishing and flower gardening. Her husband, James M. Zeka, whom she married Nov. 4, 1984, survives at home. Mrs. Zeka also leaves: three sons, Gary R. Floch and his wife Gladys; and Timothy L. Floch and his wife Lorraine, all Jamestown; and Todd P. Floch, Fort Collins, Colo.; four stepdaughters, Patti Seidner and her husband, Richard; and Janet Kesecker and her husband Jim, all Peoria, Ariz.; Susan Zeka, Fallon, Nev.; and Judy Leon and her husband Patrick, Hollis Hills, N.Y.; two sisters, Dorothy Robb, Weedville, Pa.; and Geraldine Danilov, Hermitage; two brothers, Howard J. Dawes and his wife Julia, Transfer; and Ronald R. Dawes and his wife Beverly, DuBois, Pa.; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and six stepgrandchildren. Mrs. Zeka was preceded in death by her parents; and two sisters, Lucille M. Dawes and Norma J. Moore.
ZEKA Anna Alice Josephine Swartz Barris Trucking firm, Dairy Queen co-founder was active in WM Anna Alice Josephine Swartz Barris, 3500 Sharon Road, West Middlesex, died at 5:25 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 6, 2002, in her residence after an extended illness. She was 81. Mrs. Barris was born Aug. 22, 1920, in Bethel, Pa., to William Ross Swartz and Janet Adeline English Swartz. She attended Hickory High School in Hermitage. She was co-founder with her husband Arnold in 1939 of Arnold Barris Trucking; and in 1959 of Barris Dairy Queen, the first Dairy Queen in Pennsylvania to serve food along with ice cream treats. Mrs. Barris was a member of United Methodist Church in West Middlesex; and was a past president of West Middlesex Parent Teacher Association; and American Legion Auxiliary Unit 853 in West Middlesex. She was a life member of the Ladies Auxiliary to Veterans of Foreign Wars Unit 3, West Middlesex; and Order of the Eastern Star Chapter 156 in Farrell. Mrs. Barris was a former den leader for Cub Scouts of America and served as a committee member for West Middlesex Community Swimming Pool. She enjoyed spending time with members of her family at her mountain cabin and like to play Euchre. Her husband, Arnold Leroy Barris Jr., whom she married Sept. 14, 1938, died July 1, 1982. Surviving are: two daughters, Ruthy Adeline Kirila, Transfer; and Virginia Lee Barris, West Middlesex; a brother-in-law, Jerry Barris, who made his home with her from the age of 13, West Middlesex; four sisters, Kathryn Steingrabe, Sharon; Myrtle Perroni, Hermitage; and Edythe Black and Mabel Campbell, both New Wilmington; a brother, William L. Swartz, West Middlesex; five grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. Mrs. Barris was preceded in death by a son, Arnold Leroy "Buddy" Barris III; and four brothers, Wallace, Leonard and Clifford Swartz; and Joseph Stuart Swartz. BARRIS Harry 'Keith' Miller Transfer church member worked at Greenville Metal Harry "Keith" Miller, 75 Edgewood Drive Extension, formerly of Lot 73 of Speirs Mobile Home Park, both Transfer, died at 12:52 a.m. Sunday, Jan. 6, 2002, in UPMC Horizon, Farrell, after an extended illness. He was 29. Mr. Miller was born July 18, 1972, in Farrell to Harry and Virginia "Jenny" Burnsworth Miller. A graduate of Reynolds High School, he attended Mercer County Vocational Technical School and was employed for six years by Greenville Metal Inc., where he was a furnace operator. Mr. Miller previously worked as a dairy manager for D'Onofrio's grocery store in Transfer. He enjoyed going to church and was a member for three years of First Baptist Church in Transfer. Mr. Miller loved playing golf, hunting, ice fishing and all other kinds of fishing. He loved to spend time with his family and was an ardent Pittsburgh Steelers fan. He was a member for 10 years of Boys Scouts of America Troop 74. Surviving are: his wife, the former Ronda J. Ferry, whom he married May 25, 1995; and a son, Cody K. Miller, both at home; his parents, Transfer; his maternal grandmother, Bertha F. Burns-worth, West Middlesex; a sister, Kristina L., wife of Gerald Splitstone, Jamestown; and a brother, Troy "Scott" Miller and his wife Katherine, Transfer. Mr. Miller was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, Sherman Burnsworth; and his paternal grandparents, Harry and Hazel Miller.
MILLER Maureen Ann Hecker Sharon native was member of St. Rose Church in Girard GIRARD, Ohio -- Maureen Ann Hecker, 110 Steel St., Girard, died at 1:49 a.m. Sunday (1-6-02) in Autumn Hills Nursing Home, Niles, Ohio. She was 73. Mrs. Hecker was born March 31, 1928, in Sharon to Louis and Grace Robinson. The homemaker was a member of St. Rose Church, Girard. Surviving are: her husband, Elmer G. Hecker, whom she married in 1995; three sons, Paul Hecker and David Hecker, both Girard; and Daniel Hecker, Warren, Ohio; a daughter, Diane Hecker, Youngstown; and four grandchildren. Three sisters preceded her in death.
HECKER Ilia Mijic St. George Serbian member was retired from Lordstown Ilia Mijic, 72, of Hubbard, died Thursday (1-3-02) in Port Richey, Fla. Mr. Mijic was born Dec. 19, 1930, in Glina, the former Yugoslavia, he was the son of the late Stanko and Milka Padjen Mijic. Mr. Mijic was a retired electrician for General Motors Corp. in Lords-town, Ohio. He was a member of St. George Serbian Orthodox Church, Hermitage. Surviving are: his wife of 40 years, the former Milka "Mickey" Vignjevich; a son, Michael Mijic, and his wife, Joanne, Warren, Ohio; a daughter, Mrs. Daniel (Elaine) Vucelich, Jeannette, Pa.; two grandchildren, Daniella and Kristofer Vucelich; a sister Donica Demonja, Yugoslavia; two uncles, Joe Mijic, Warren; and Pete Mijic, New Mexico; and an aunt, Eva Marinkovich, San Diego.
MIJIC Alexander Fazakas Alexander Fazakas, Bentley House, Hermitage, formerly of 1449 Ridge Ave., Sharpsville, died at 2:55 p.m. Sunday (1-6-02) in Butler Veterans Administration Medical Center after a brief illness. He was 76. Obituary information was incomplete.
FAZAKAS Ralph J. Painter Ex-trucking company owner, Mason had been a mechanic Ralph J. Painter, formerly of Fellowship Manor, Pine Township, died at 12:30 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 5, 2002, in Orchard Manor, Pine Township, after a two-year illness. He was 88. Mr. Painter was born May 31, 1913, in Jackson Center to John Joseph and Sarah Frances Weaver Painter. He was owner of the former Ralph Painter Trucking Co. and was previously employed as a mechanic by Broad Street Garage, both Grove City. Mr. Painter was also a security guard at Manatee Hospital of Bradenton, Fla. He was a former member of Church of the Nazarene in Grove City and attended the Bayshore Church of the Nazarene in Bradenton. For more than 50 years, Mr. Painter also belonged to Free and Accepted Masons Lodge 603 in Grove City. His wife, the former Ruth P. Carll, whom he married June 1, 1948, died July 29, 1997. Surviving are: a sister, Margaret Shipton, Grove City; and several nieces and nephews. Besides his wife, Mr. Painter was preceded in death by a sister, Mary Shaw Coulter; and two brothers, Howard and Joseph Painter.
PAINTER Dorothy E. Saunders Dignan Laycock PHOENIX -- Dorothy E. Saunders Dignan Laycock, 3431 Helena Drive, Phoenix, formerly of Sharpsville, died at 9:45 p.m. Saturday (1-5-02) in her home. She was 90. Obituary information was incomplete.
LAYCOCK Edward 'Harry' Schwartz Retired farmer was custodian, bus driver for WM schools Edward "Harry" Schwartz, 273 Gearhart Road, Shenango Township, died at 7:35 p.m. Friday, Jan. 4, 2002, in the hospital of Jameson Health System, New Castle. He was 79. Mr. Schwartz was born Sept. 6, 1922 in his current residence, the family farm in Shenango Township, to Frank and Theresa Seasar Schwartz. He attended the former Battle Row School in Shenango Township. A retired lifetime self-employed farmer, Mr. Schwartz was also a custodial worker for West Middlesex schools and for Sisters of the Humility of Mary, Villa Maria (Pa.) Community, Lawrence County. He also was a school bus driver for West Middlesex School District. Mr. Schwartz was a member of Neshannock Presbyterian church in New Wilmington. His wife, the former Geraldine L. Miller, whom he married July 6, 1946, survives at the residence. Also surviving are: three daughters, Linda DeSilvey and her husband, Dennis; Carol Roth and her husband William; and Joyce Hites and her husband Timothy, all Pulaski; two sons, Edward L. and his wife Jacquelyn Schwartz, Pulaski; and Dennis E. and his wife Cyndi Schwartz, Hermitage; one brother, William Schwartz and his wife Stella, Pulaski; three sisters, Margaret Koch, Hermitage; Martha Spathling, Cranberry Township, Butler County; and Josephine Supple, Depew, N.Y.; 14 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Mr. Schwartz was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Frank and Henry Schwartz; and one sister, Theresa Popfinger. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 19 Jefferson Avenue, Sharon 16146; or Neshannock Presbyterian Church, 330 W. Neshannock Ave., New Wilmington 16142.
