Gladys C. Rice
New Bedford Presbyterian member lived in WM

Gladys C. Rice of 114 Sharon-Bedford Road in West Middlesex passed away Monday evening (1-7-02) in her residence. She was 99.

Mrs. Rice was born July 29, 1902, in Steubenville, Ohio, a daughter of Joseph and Dora Stewart Lyle.

She lived in the Youngstown area for 40 years before moving to West Middlesex in 1968.

Gladys was a 1920 graduate of East Liverpool (Ohio) High School and attended Kent (Ohio) State University.

She was a school teacher for four years in East Liverpool and later a social worker for Mahoning County Child Welfare for 10 years.

Gladys was a member of New Bedford Presbyterian Church; and belonged to Order of the Eastern Star; and Daughters of the American Revolution, both New Castle.

Her husband, George E. Rice, whom she married June 3, 1924, died in December 1967.

She is survived by: a daughter, Marie Holtzman, West Middlesex; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

A son, George J. Rice; a brother, Oscar L. Lyle; and two sisters, Ada Ketchum and Grace McFarland, are deceased.

Howard B. Dewyer

Retiree formerly of Conn., a WWII vet, moved here in '98

Howard B. Dewyer of One Elston Way, Hermitage, formerly of Seymour, Conn., passed away at 11:10 p.m. Monday, Jan. 7, 2002, in UPMC Horizon, Farrell.

Mr. Dewyer was born in Lincoln Place, Allegheny County, a son of the late Howard B. and Sadie Samantha Large Dewyer.

Mr. Dewyer attended schools in McKeesport.

He retired in 1988 as a lawn maintenance worker from Heritage Village in Southbury, Conn., after 15 years of service.

Mr. Dewyer was previously employed for eight years as a meat cutter for First National Stores, Hartford, Conn.; and for seven years for Sikorsky Aircraft, a helicopter manufacturer, where he was a lead man.

He was a member of First Methodist Church in Ansonia, Conn.; and Free and Accepted Masons Lodge 526 in Elizabeth, Pa.

Mr. Dewyer moved to the Shenango Valley in 1998.

A U.S. Army veteran, he served during World War II from Aug. 1, 1944, until his discharge on June 25, 1946.

His wife, Janice I. Dewyer, whom he married April 23, 1947, preceded him in death in October 2000.

Survivors include: one daughter, Dorothy M. Dewyer, Canonsburg, Pa., formerly of Greenville; and one brother, James M. Dewyer, North Huntington, Pa.

In addition to his parents and his wife, a sister, Ethel Large, preceded him in death.

Harry L. 'Bud' Weyer

Cook for Italian restaurant in Fla. was former countian

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- Harry L. "Bud" Weyer, Daytona Beach, formerly of Sharpsville, died at 9:30 p.m. Monday, Jan. 7, 2002, in Emory L. Bennett Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Nursing Home after an extended illness. He was 76.

Mr. Weyer was born May 4, 1925, in Mercer County to Harry L. and Edna Wolford Weyer.

Harry worked all his life as a cook for Tony and Geraldine Mitchell's Italian Cuisine restaurant in Daytona, after serving in the U.S. Army during World War II.

He was an avid lover of cats.

Harry was preceded in death by his parents, formerly of Sharpsville; two brothers, James Weyer, Cleveland; and George Weyer, Orlando Beach, Fla.; and one sister, Ada Weyer Hurl, Sharpsville.

Harry is survived by: one daughter, Cheryl Weyer Rakoci, Wheatland; three grandchildren, Jennifer Rakoci, Sharon; Luke Rakoci, Pittsburgh; and Kimberly Troutman, Chicago; one granddaughter-in-law, Melissa Vasconi Rakoci, Pittsburgh, formerly of Hermitage; a great-granddaughter, Lucia Rakoci, Pittsburgh; and Tony and Geraldine Mitchell, his caretakers, of Daytona Beach.

His daughter, Cheryl, requests prayers in his memory for other families with loved ones who are miles apart.

Rose A. Krantz, Hermitage, formerly of Sherman Avenue, Sharon, died at 6:30 a.m. today (1-9-02) in Nugent Convalescent Home, Hermitage. She was 86.

Albert G. Maliner

Sharon Steel retiree was flea market dealer, teen pianist

Albert G. Maliner of 435 Orchard St. in Sharon died at 4 p.m. Monday (1-7-02) in his home. He was 77.

Mr. Maliner was born Dec. 5, 1924, in New York City, a son of George and Elizabeth Guyan Maliner.

As a teen-ager, Albert played piano concerts in Packard Music Hall in Warren, Ohio, and at Stambaugh Auditorium in Youngstown.

He retired in 1983 as a welder from the former Sharon Steel Corp.'s Farrell plant, after 33 years of service.

He was a member of United Steel Workers Union.

After retirement, he was a flea market dealer at Michaelangelo's in New Castle.

His wife, Alice L. Hawkins Maliner, whom he married July 5, 1947, died Feb. 24, 1995.

Survivors include: one son, David and his wife Jeanne, Brookfield; two grandchildren, Amy Neral and her husband Stephen Jr.; and Matt Maliner and his wife Kristen; and five great-grandchildren, Tyler Neral, Jessica Neral, Samantha Renee Neral, Kaely Maliner and Reily Maliner.

Mr. Maliner was preceded in death by his parents and a grandson, Michael D. Maliner.

Ex-Sharpsville homemaker had daughter living here

PHOENIX -- A funeral service will be held Saturday for Dorothy E. Saunders Dignan-Laycock, 3431 Helena Drive, Phoenix, formerly of Sharpsville. She died at 9:45 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 5, 2002, in her home after an extended illness. She was 90.

Mrs. Dignan-Laycock was born June 10, 1911, in Sharpsville to William and Elizabeth Brooks Saunders.

She attended the former Sharpsville Deeter School.

A homemaker, Mrs. Dignan-Laycock enjoyed crocheting, reading, bingo, cooking and, most of all, spending time with her family.

She was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary to Veterans of Foreign Wars Hickory Post 6166 in Hermitage.

Mrs. Dignan-Laycock was preceded in death by her first husband, Dominick T. Dignan, who passed away March 26, 1956, and her second husband, Bert Laycock, who passed away May 14, 1980.

Surviving are: three daughters, Jerry Dignan, with whom she made her home in Phoenix; Mrs. Charles (Ruth) Hecox, Nebraska; and Mrs. David (Hope Darlene) Baldinelli, Sharpsville; one son, Charles Dignan, Phoenix; one sister, Lena Mae Payne, Wintersville, Ohio; 16 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.

Besides her first and second husbands, she was preceded in death by three sons, James, Robert and Donald Dignan; three sisters, Mary Redmond; and Violet and Emily Rhodanz; and two brothers, Bill and Edward Saunders.

Mary Louise Mondich

Farrell woman retired as school teacher in Hermitage

A Mass of Christian burial will be held Friday for Mary Louise Mondich, 1811 Memorial Drive, Farrell. She died at 2:15 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 8, 2002, in her home after an extended illness. She was 53.

Mrs. Mondich was born Feb. 10, 1947, in Sharon to Gaylord and Bertha Beyer Brown.

A 1965 alumna of Hermitage High School, she earned her degree in 1969 from Slippery Rock University and retired in 1999 after 30 years as a school teacher for Hermitage School District.

Mrs. Mondich was a member of Church of Notre Dame in Hermitage.

She also belonged to Croatian Catholic Union Lodge 29 in Sharon; American Business Women's Association; and Hermitage Teachers Association.

Surviving are: her husband, Michael Mondich, whom she married Aug. 4, 1973; and a son, Michael V. Mondich, both at home in Farrell; her mother, Hermitage; one sister, Mrs. Christopher (Norma) Haas; and one brother, William Brown, both Columbus, Ohio; one niece, Laura Haas; and one nephew, Jim Haas.

Mrs. Mondich was preceded in death by her father, who died in 1994.

H. King Williams

'60 Sharpsville grad worked at Polk, was active in sports

H. King Williams of 351 Crestview Drive, Franklin, died at 7:15 a.m. Monday, Jan. 7, 2002, in Cleveland Clinic. He was 59.

Mr. Williams was born Dec. 8, 1942, in Sharon, a son of Robert M. and Helen J. Adams Williams.

He graduated from Sharpsville High School in 1960. He later earned a bachelor's degree in philosophy from Gannon University in Erie and a master's degree from Slippery Rock University. He had also attended Pennsylvania State University, St. Mary's Seminary in Baltimore and Bowling Green University in Toledo, Ohio.

Mr. Williams worked for the past 30 years at Polk Center, where he was a unit manager at Terrance. He had also been a unit manager at North Side.

Earlier in his employment at Polk, he served as director of the recreational department, having started the Picture Bingo Program, which remains in use today. He also coordinated the circus at the center.

He was a member of St. Stephen's Church in Oil City.

Mr. Williams coached the Franklin High School girls track team during the 1990s and had also coached elementary basketball at St. Patrick's School.

He was very involved as his children were growing up in Little League baseball, starting in Minor Division.

He was a "Friday golfer," enjoyed reading, and was an avid runner, participating in many races. One race that he coordinated was the Williams Clutch in the Gobble Wobble Thanksgiving Day Run in Buhl Farm park, Sharon.

Mr. Williams is survived by his wife, the former Mary Ann Lucas, whom he married on July 11, 1970.

Also surviving are: three children, Helen Jean McWilliams and her husband Lawrence, Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio; John Lucas Williams and his wife Kathleen; and Eileen Williams, all Chicago; two granddaughters, Regina Anne McWilliams and Laura Jean McWilliams, both Cuyahoga Falls; eight brothers and sisters, Edward Williams and his wife Carolyn; Mary DeCapua and her husband Sonny; and John Williams and his wife Toni, all Sharon; Elizabeth "Biss" King and her husband Dan, Seattle, Wash.; George Williams and his wife Joanne, Belleville; Alice Jordan and her husband Dave, Mercer; Rev. Martin Williams and his wife Laurie, Beaver; and Mike Williams and his wife Florence, San Diego; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, James Williams.

Sophia Diurba Krivak

Ex-local woman belonged to Holy Trinity Lutheran

PHOENIX -- A memorial service will be held Saturday for Sophia Diurba Krivak, 4214 E. Turney Ave., Phoenix, formerly of Revere Drive in Hermitage and Arthur Street in Masury. She died Wednesday morning, Dec. 26, 2001, after a brief illness in Phoenix, where she had made her home for the past several years. She was 87.

Mrs. Krivak was born July 15, 1914, in Johnstown, Pa., to George and Mary Grexa Diurba.

She was married to John Krivak, who died in 1969.

Mrs. Krivak was a lifetime member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Hermitage.

She enjoyed dancing, playing cards and bowling.

Mrs. Krivak is survived by: her daughter, Mrs. Charles (Mary Ann) Anderson, Phoenix; and a son, John P. and his wife Bethwyn Krivak, Hermitage; along with four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

She is also survived by two sisters, Sue Bakondi, Greenville; and Evelyn Vario, Sharon; and a brother, Joseph Diurba, Sharpsville.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, John and Michael Diurba; and George Diurba Jr.; and three sisters, Mary Miller, Ann Roberts and Helen Webber.

Memorial contributions may be given to the Organ Fund of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, 3325 Morefield Road, Hermitage 16148.
