Rev. Dr. Emerson R. Ray Pastor formerly ministered in Presbyterian church in GC PITTSBURGH -- The Rev. Dr. Emerson R. Ray, Mount Lebanon, formerly of Grove City, died Tuesday morning, Jan. 15, 2002, in University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, Pittsburgh. He was 90. Rev. Ray was born Nov. 6, 1911, in Pittsburgh to Mark Wolfe Ray and Nanna Scott Ray. Rev. Ray was previously pastor for 10 years of the former United Presbyterian Church in Grove City. He was the beloved husband of the late Hilda Gibson Ray, who died in 1996. Rev. Ray was the loving and devoted father of Emerson R. Ray and his wife Linda, Mount Lebanon; grandfather of Mrs. Sean (Jennifer) Lawyer; and Mrs. Christopher (Marcia) Balentine; and the great-grandfather of Katleen. Memorial contributions may be made to the Salvation Army, 424 Third Ave., Pittsburgh 15219; or Asbury Foundation in care of 700 Bower Hill Road, Pittsburgh 15243.

YOUNGSTOWN -- Mary Berkovich Prochenets Phillips, Youngs-town, formerly of 6230 Morningside Drive, Hubbard, died at 6:30 p.m. Monday (1-14-02) in Liberty Health Care after an extended illness. She was 93. Mrs. Phillips was born June 1, 1908, in West Middlesex to James and Barbara Pucekovich Berkovich. She attended West Middlesex area schools and owned and operated the former State House Hotel Restaurant, Bar and Grille in Farrell for more than 35 years, retiring in 1970. Mrs. Phillips belonged to St. Patrick's Church in Hubbard and was a charter member of Croatian Fraternal Union 705 in Farrell. She loved dancing, especially polka dancing, and also enjoyed bowling. Her first husband, John Prochenets, whom she married Sept. 13, 1924, died in 1969. Surviving are: her second husband, Bruce Phillips, whom she married Aug. 25, 1970, Hubbard; one stepdaughter, Deborah Bradick, San Jose, Calif.; one son, Charles Prochenets and his wife Elaine, Hermitage; three stepsons, Bruce Phillips Jr., David Phillips and Mark Bradick, all Townville, Crawford County; two sisters, Barbara Facko, Farrell; and Catherine Sinkovic, Hubbard; three grandchildren; three great-grandchildren, Libby Prochenets; and Megan and Gary Newmeyer; and eight stepgrandchildren. Besides her first husband, Mrs. Phillips was preceded in death by her parents; one son, John T. "Teddy" Prochenets Jr.; one brother, James Berkovich; and two sisters, Lilly Detelich and Ann Golubich. PHILLIPS Walter O. Mitchell Retiree of N. Carolina plant was formerly of Fredonia Walter O. Mitchell, formerly of Water Street in Fredonia, died Monday, Jan. 14, 2002, in UPMC Horizon, Greenville, following a period of failing health. He was 92. Mr. Mitchell was born March 15, 1909, in Washington, Pa., a son of the late James O. and Jennie Herrick Mitchell. He was married to the former Eva Mae Lanning, who preceded him in death in 1964. Mr. Mitchell subsequently married Josephine Clark, who survives. He retired as a tool and die maker from Wall Manufacturing in Kingston, N.C. Mr. Mitchell was a member of Fredonia United Methodist Church and was a charter member of Fredonia Lions Club. He also belonged to Independent Order of Odd Fellows Lodge 492 in Sheakleyville. Surviving besides his second wife are: two sons, James A. Mitchell, Florida; and the Rev. Paul O. Mitchell, Hawthorn, Pa.; two stepdaughters, Edna Freeman, Fredonia; and Katherine Nevel, Pittsfield, Pa.; two stepsons, Ronald Rushton, Meadville; and James E. Rushton, Garland, Texas; five grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. Besides his first wife, Eva Mae, Mr. Mitchell was preceded in death by his parents; an infant daughter, Audrey A. Mitchell; a sister, Jeanne Mitchell; a grandson, James A. Mitchell Jr.; and a stepdaughter, Ethel Fleet.
MITCHELL Debra J. Anderson Debra J. Anderson, Ashby's West Care Home, 105 Fifth Ave., Sharon, died at 6:50 p.m. Friday (1-11-02) in the hospital of Sharon Regional Health System. She was 45. ANDERSON Ann A. DeMartinis Ex-Farrell homemaker was Democrat committeewoman Ann A. DeMartinis, 265 Ellis Ave., Hermitage, formerly of Fruit Avenue in Farrell, passed away at 11:10 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 15, 2002, in UPMC Horizon, Farrell. She was 89. Mrs. DeMartinis was born March 11, 1912, in Racine, Pa., a daughter of Nicholas and Nunziata Gizzi. She attended Racine schools and moved to the area in 1937. Prior to her marriage, Mrs. DeMartinis had worked at Shenango Pottery in New Castle and the Glouse House in Beaver Falls. A homemaker, she was a member of Our Lady of Fatima Church and St. Ann's Church, both Farrell. Mrs. DeMartinis was a charter member of St. Ann's Altar and Rosary Society. She was also a charter member of Shenango Valley Osteopathic Hospital Ladies Guild and the Kiwanianne Club, both Farrell. Mrs. DeMartinis served as a Democratic committeewoman in Farrell's 2-2 precinct for 45 years from 1949 to 1994, and was a former honoree as the Democrat of the Year by the Farrell Democratic Committee. Her husband, Angelo A. DeMartinis, whom she married Aug. 16, 1937, passed away Aug. 30, 1995. Surviving are: two sons, Anthony R. DeMartinis; and Michael J. DeMartinis and his wife Georganne, all Hermitage; two sisters, Mary Rosso and Theresa Thomas, both Beaver Falls; and two grandsons, Brian J. DeMartinis, Fort Myers, Fla.; and the Rev. Michael G. DeMartinis, parochial vicar of Our Lady of Peace, Erie. Besides her husband, Mrs. DeMartinis was preceded in death by her parents; one son, Nicholas DeMartinis; two brothers, Louis and James Gizzi; and two sisters, Rose Perotta and Alvira DeLeonardo. DeMARTINIS Mrs. Earl Thelma S. Swartz South Py woman was charter member of Brookfield church A funeral service will be held Friday for Mrs. Earl Thelma S. Swartz of 2876 Saranac Drive and formerly of Tamarack Drive, both in South Pymatuning Township. She passed away at 11:30 p.m. Sunday (1-13-02) in her home because she was ready to join her husband, Earl Lee Swartz, whom she lost last June. She was 89. Mrs. Swartz was born Dec. 28, 1912, in Akron, the daughter of James F. and Jessie Gibson Stoyer. She was a 1929 graduate of the former Transfer High School. She was employed at the former Stafford's Cleaners in Sharpsville; and the former Peoples Cleaners of Sharon for many years. She was a charter member of Living Word Church of Brookfield in Masury. Mrs. Swartz was a former member of St. Paul's United Church of Christ, Hermitage, and still belonged to their friendship circle and Pollyanna Guild. She also was a member of the South Pymatuning Ladies Club and the South Pymatuning Volunteer Fireman's Auxiliary. Some of her hobbies included reading, sewing and crocheting. Her husband of 72 years, Mr. Earl Lee Swartz, whom she married June 18, 1929, passed away on Tuesday, June 19, 2001. She is survived by one daughter, Mr. Joseph (Martha L.) Simons, South Pymatuning Township; one son, Timothy Earl Swartz of Shiloh, Ohio; and two sisters-in-law, Mrs. J. Wallis (Marian) Stoyer and Mrs. Joseph (Agnes) French, both of South Pymatuning Township; 10 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Luanne Jessup; and two brothers, J. Wallis Stoyer; and Robert R.M. Stoyer.
