Joseph J. 'Perk' Mancini Jr.
Transfer man was longtime Hermitage State Store worker

Joseph J. "Perk" Mancini Jr. of 11 W. Patricia Drive in Transfer, passed away at 3:40 a.m. Thursday (1-17-02) in the hospital of Sharon Regional Health System following an extended illness. He was 69.

Mr. Mancini was born April 13, 1932 in Farrell, a son of Guiseppe (Joseph) and Filomena Peruzzi Mancini.

He attended Farrell schools and went on to serve in the U.S. Army in 1953. He was honorably discharged in 1955.

Mr. Mancini was employed by the Pennsylvania State Store in Hermitage, from which he retired in 1985 after 30 years of service.

He was a member of Miracle Valley Church in Hermitage.

Mr. Mancini enjoyed the outdoors and loved boating, leisurely walks, fishing and, especially, spending time with his grandchildren.

His wife, the former Bettyann P. Fennell, whom he married May 25, 1953, survives at home.

He also leaves: two daughters, Carol J. Pope; and Cheryl L. Whalen and her husband Terence M.; and one sister, Marie A. Giglio, all Sharon; and one brother, Anthony Mancini and his wife Beverly, Burghill. He is also survived by his five grandchildren, Brittany M. and Nicole E. Pope; and Terra L., Jason J. and Erin E. Whalen, all Sharon.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Adeline "Dels" Natale; and one infant daughter, Donna M. Mancini.

Guy P. Labor

Retired coal mining worker was GCHS standout athlete

Guy P. Labor, 782 N. Liberty Road, Pine Township, died at 11:05 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 16, 2002, in his residence after a one-year illness. He was 77.

Mr. Labor was born May 3, 1924, in Forestville, Butler County, to Nick and Sophie Cline Labor.

The graduate of Grove City High School Class of 1943 was a standout athlete in football, track and basketball. Mr. Labor also played baseball in various leagues in western Pennsylvania and was selected for a tryout by the Philadelphia Phillies.

After working more than 44 years in the coal mining business, he retired in 1989 as a heavy equipment operator from the former Adobe Mining Co.. He was formerly employed by DeMarsh Coal Co. and H&D Coal Co.

A U.S. Navy veteran, Mr. Labor served as a fire controlman on the Seaplane Tender USS Curtiss AV-4 in the South Pacific during World War II.

He was a life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 519 and belonged to Church of the Beloved Disciple, both Grove City.

Surviving are: his wife, the former Mary E. Ferguson, whom he married May 2, 1953, at the residence; three daughters, Mrs. Jeff (Pamela K.) Weaver, Richmond, Va.; Mrs. Robert E. (Brenda J.) Collar, Hilton Head, S.C.; and Mrs. Brian H. (Guyla A.) Porterfield, Brea, Calif.; one sister, Mrs. Anthony (Ann) Berkos, Hermitage; one brother, William C. Labor and his wife Birdie Labor, Grove City; and seven grandchildren, Caitlin and Michel Weaver; Justin and Bobby Collar; Matthew Dumbroski; and Nikki and Tyler Armstrong.

Mr. Labor was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Fred P. Labor and Sylvanns "Tud" Labor; and one sister, Mary A. Cicero.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 19 Jefferson Avenue, Sharon 16146; or the American Heart Association, 59 N. Crescent Drive, Hermitage 16148.

    Interment: Crestview Memorial Park, Pine Township.
