Steve (Stevo) Backo Sharon Steel retiree belonged to Serbian church, groups Steve (Stevo) Backo, 1115 Washington St., Farrell, died at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 19, 2002, in UPMC Horizon, Farrell, after an extended illness. He was 78. Mr. Backo was born Aug. 14, 1923, in Ramljani, Knin Dalmatia, Yugoslavia, to Petar and Marja Trkulja Backo. He retired in 1985 after 35 years from the former Sharon Steel Corp.'s Farrell plant, where he was a painter. Mr. Backo was a member of St. George Serbian Orthodox Church in Hermitage; Serbian National Federation Lodge 68; the Serbian Home; and Ravna Gora Chetnik organization, all Farrell. Surviving are: his wife, the former Mara Dobric, whom he married Nov. 22, 1947, at home; three sons and their spouses, Peter and Kathleen Backo, Denver; Samuel and Valerie Backo, Hermitage; and George and Deborah Backo, Erie; one brother, Rade Backo, Yugoslavia; and six grandchildren, Kara, Steven, Adam, Crista, Nicholas and Luke Backo. Mr. Backo was preceded in death by his parents. Memorial contributions may be made to the Fresco Fund of St. George Serbian Orthodox Church, 65 S. Keel Ridge Road, Hermitage 16148.
BACKO Clarence E. Brown Masury plant retiree formerly lived in Sharpsville, Burghill Clarence E. Brown, Hempfield Township, formerly of Sharpsville and Burghill, died at 6:42 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 19, 2002, in White-Cliff Nursing Home, Hempfield Township. He was 86. Mr. Brown was born Oct. 11, 1915, in Sharpsville to Claude and Katherine Loutzenhiser Brown. A graduate of Sharpsville High School, he attended the former Shenango Valley School of Business in Sharon and retired in 1980 from the former U.S. Steel in Masury, where he was employed 20 years as a laborer. Mr. Brown previously worked for Shenango Steel Co. in Sharpsville. He enjoyed watching sports on television and gardening. His wife, the former Mary Ann Rock, whom he married June 4, 1935, died March 15, 1981. Surviving are: one daughter, Mrs. Larry (Colette) Layshock, Sharpsville; a longtime companion, Lois Dolan, Greenville; one sister, Lorraine Smith, Sagamore Hills, Ohio; five grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. Besides his wife, Mr. Brown was preceded in death by one sister, Peggy Brown. Memorial contributions may be made to the Memorial Fund of Hartford United Methodist Church, Box 36, Hartford 44424.
BROWN Francis G. 'Mick' Honel AK Steel retiree of Masury served with Marines in Korea Francis G. "Mick" Honel of Masury died at 6:34 a.m. Sunday (1-20-02) in O'Brien Memorial Nursing Home, Masury, after an extended illness. He was 70. Mr. Honel was born Oct. 9, 1931, in Springfield, Ohio, a son of Louis S. and Mary K. Beach Honel. He was a graduate of Lawrenceville (Ohio) High School and served with the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean conflict. He was a life member of the Shenango Valley Marine Corps League, Detachment 632. Mr. Honel retired in 1977 as a pickler from what is now AK Steel, Sawhill Tubular Division, Sharon, where he had worked for 25 years. He was a former member of Masury United Methodist Church. He also belonged to Local 5026 of United Steelworkers; Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6233, West Middlesex; American Legion Post 432, Wheatland; and National and Pennsylvania Box Car associations. Mr. Honel is survived by: three daughters, Noelle Sloan, Warren, Ohio; Cindy Honel-Mathews, Masury; and Jennifer J. Faber, Fort Myers, Fla.; one son, Jay G. Honel, Brookfield; three sisters, Mary Robinson, Springfield; Rose Miller, Bradford, Ohio; and Patricia Honel, Covington, Ohio; two brothers, Edward and John Honel, both Bradford; and 10 grandchildren. Mr. Honel was preceded in death by his parents. Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.
H0NEL Richard Eugene O'Dell Sr. Ex-Trinity worker was welder in Ohio, schooled in WM Richard Eugene O'Dell Sr. of 1047 Linden St., Sharon, passed away unexpectedly at 5:03 a.m. Saturday (1-19-02) in West Penn Hospital in Pittsburgh following complications of leukemia. He was 27. Mr. O'Dell was born March 19, 1974, in Westfield, N.Y., a son of Andrew Peter Benton O'Dell and Della Yvonne Swoger O'Dell. He attended West Middlesex schools and was employed as a welder by Warren Fabricating in Niles, Ohio. Mr. O'Dell previously worked for Trinity Industries-Greenville Rail Car Division. He enjoyed being at home and spending time with his three children. Mr. O'Dell was a devout Pittsburgh Steelers fan. His wife, Nicole Anne Gromley O'Dell, whom he married April 15, 1996, survives him at home. He also leaves: one daughter, Destini D. O'Dell; and two sons, Dakota E. Gromley; and Richard E. O'Dell Jr., all at home. He is also survived by his mother, Sharon; two sisters, Mrs. Robert (Gail Y.) Saxton, West Middlesex; and Lynn L. O'Dell, Sharon. Mr. O'Dell was preceded in death by his father and his grandparents.
O'DELL Mildred B. Pears Mildred B. Pears, 5673 Virginia Road, Hermitage, died at 7:30 a.m. today (1-21-02) in the hospital of Sharon Regional Health System. She was 82. Obituary information was incomplete.
PEARS James M. Reynolds Retired Hermitage educator was WWII Purple Heart vet NEWARK, Del. -- A funeral Mass will be held Wednesday for James M. Reynolds, Newark, formerly of South Hermitage Road, West Middlesex. He passed away at 3 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 19, 2002, in Millcroft Nursing Home following an extended illness. He was 75. Mr. Reynolds was born Oct. 3, 1926, in Pittsburgh, a son of Thomas Patrick Reynolds and Mary Gertrude Reynolds. As an alumnus of Thiel College in Greenville, he earned a bachelor's degree and was a member of the school's 1950 undefeated football team. Mr. Reynolds later received his master's in education administration from the University of Pittsburgh. He retired in 1986 as principal of Hickory Middle School in Hermitage, where he also served in positions as a history teacher and football coach. A U.S. Navy veteran, Mr. Reynolds served as a signalman on the USS DuPage from 1942-45 during World War II. He was recipient of a Purple Heart. He was a member of Church of Notre Dame in Hermitage. Mr. Reynolds enjoyed reading and spending time with his grandchildren, and was a licensed airplane pilot, having flown out of Youngstown Municipal Airport. He was an avid football fan. His wife, the former Mary Logan, whom he married Aug. 23, 1958, passed away June 9, 1982. Surviving are: one daughter, Mary Lorraine "Lorrie" Taylor, Smyrna, Del.; one son, James Thomas Reynolds, Blairstown, N.J.; two sisters, Dolly Downy and her husband Raymond; and Ruth Gallagher, all Pittsburgh; and three grandchildren, Patrick James Taylor, Kaitlyn Marie Taylor and Brooke Elizabeth Reynolds. Besides his wife, Mr. Reynolds was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Mary Rosaline McCarthy; and one brother, Thomas Reynolds. Memorial contributions may be made to Alzheimer's Foundation, Greater Pittsburgh Chapter, 1323 Forbes Ave., Suite 200, Pittsburgh 15219; or the Football Program at Thiel College, 75 College Ave., Greenville 16125.
