Mary L. Mehl Ex-local woman was active in Lancaster church, community LANCASTER, Pa. -- Mary L. Mehl of 1407 Valley Road in Lancaster, formerly of Highland Road in Sharon, died unexpectedly of natural causes at 6:13 p.m. Tuesday (1-22-02) in Lancaster Regional Medical Center. She was 89. Mrs. Mehl was born May 22, 1912, in Sharon to the late Albert and Laura McMurray Lepper. A 1930 graduate of Sharon High School, she attended Mercyhurst College in Erie. As a member of Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church in Lancaster, she volunteered at various church functions. She also was a volunteer at Wheatland estate in Lancaster, the home of the late President James Buchanan, conducting historic tours of the home. Mrs. Mehl was past president of Dance of the Month Club and served as chairman of the Lancaster Horse Show Ticket Committee. She was an active member of the former St. Joseph Hospital Auxiliary, Lancaster. She was a 50-year member of Daughters of the American Revolution and belonged to Conestoga Country Club and International Federation of Catholic Alumnae. Her husband, Harold J. Mehl, died in 1987. Surviving are: three daughters, Marcia M. Campbell, Lancaster; Joan M., married to Robert J. Tolle, Fairfax, Va.; and Mary E., married to Joseph J. Doherty, Point Pleasant, N.J.; a son, James H., married to Christine A. Mehl, Lancaster; eight grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Mass of Christian burial will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday (1-26-02) in Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church, 558 W. Walnut St., Lancaster, with the Rev. Michael J. Grab, pastor, as celebrant. Relatives and friends are invited to attend a graveside service at 1 p.m. Tuesday (1-29-02) at St. Mary's Cemetery, Hermitage. Victor A. Fragle Victor A. Fragle, 254 Wick Ave., Hermitage, died at 10:50 p.m. Thursday (1-24-02) in John XXIII Home, Hermitage. He was 77. Obituary information was incomplete.
FRAGLE Clara L. Patton Co-owner of Sandy Lake Pennzoil was active in church Clara L. Patton of 3429 Sandy Lake-New Lebanon Road, Sandy Lake Township, died at 9:45 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 24, 2002, in United Community Hospital, Pine Township, after an extended illness. She was 85. Mrs. Patton was born Sept. 13, 1916, in Rouseville, Venango County, to Henry and Jane Carney McFadden. She was a graduate of Oil City High School and, along with her husband, owned and operated Patton's Pennzoil of Sandy Lake for more than 32 years. Mrs. Patton also had worked for many years at Shelley Memorials of Sandy Lake. As an active member of St. Columbkille Church in Stoneboro, she belonged to the Ladies Fellowship and taught religious programs for many years, especially the First Holy Communion class of the parish. Mrs. Patton enjoyed reading and spending time with her family. She was always willing to help others. She married DeLos A. "Carney" Patton on April 19, 1940. He preceded her in death Oct. 13, 1978. Mrs. Patton is survived by: one son, Charles T. "Terry" Patton and his wife Deborah, Sandy Lake; three granddaughters, Mrs. David (Amy) Szlucha, Walworth, N.Y.; Mrs. Michael (Tera) Warnock, Clairton; and Mrs. Mark (Cara) Johnston, Poland, Ohio; one grandson, Gary DeLos Patton, Rescaca, Ga.; and two great-grandchildren, Sarah Patton and Matthew Szlucha. Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by one son, Gary Patton; three sisters; and five brothers.
PATTON Jonathan P. Spence Navy vet was entrepreneur, contractor, business owner Jonathan P. Spence, entrepreneur, contractor and business owner of 215 N. Broad St. in Grove City, died at 7:31 p.m. Thursday, Jan, 24, 2002, in his residence after becoming ill in July 2001. He was 46. Mr. Spence was born Feb. 14, 1955, in Grove City to Richard F. And Mary Louise Hileman Spence. He attended Grove City High School and was owner and operator for the past 10 years of Custom Fence and Deck Co, a home-based business in Grove City. Mr. Spence previously did construction work for nine years in Galveston, Texas. A U.S. Navy veteran, he served as a firefighter and nuclear welder/pipefitter on the USS Little Rock from 1972 to 1975. Mr. Spence was a member of Grace United Methodist Church in Grove City; and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7465, Springfield Township. He was an avid football fan and collected sports and classic cars. Surviving are: his mother; and his grandmother, Mabel Hileman, both Grove City; three sisters, Mrs. Gary (Kimberly Louise) Koebler; and Mrs. Edward (Karen Irene) Mackall, both Grove City; and Mary Kathleen Spence, Oil City; three brothers, William "Joe" Spence and his wife Karen; and Richard Gilmore Spence, all Grove City; and Gary W. Spence, Mercer; six nieces; and three nephews. Mr. Spence was preceded in death by his father; and a brother, Richard Bruce Spence, who was killed in Vietnam while serving in the U.S. Army.
SPENCE Dolores J. DeCapua Conneaut Lake woman was native of Sharon Dolores J. DeCapua of 11216 Aldina Drive, Conneaut Lake, died Thursday morning, Jan. 24, 2002, in the Transitional Care Unit of Meadville Medical Center. She was 76. Mrs. DeCapua was born Nov. 23, 1925, in Sharon, a daughter of Joseph and Kathryn Hardy Adderty. She married Alfred "Sonny" DeCapua on April 15, 1947. He preceded her in death April 25, 1997. Prior to her marriage, Mrs. DeCapua worked at the former Bell Telephone Co. in Sharon. She was a member of Our Lady Queen of Americas Church in Conneaut Lake. Survivors include: two daughters, Patricia J. Rugala, Conneaut Lake; and Mary Jude Jackson and her husband William, all Conneaut Lake; three grandchildren, Cyndee and Mark Rugala; and Joel Agnew; a sister, Marcie Kostka, Sharon; and a brother, Ronald Adderty and his wife Carol, Pulaski. The family asks that memorial contributions be made to Crawford County Unit of American Cancer Society, Pine Street, Meadville 16335.
DeCAPUA Marie Gibb Stewart Homemaker was East Main church, Eastern Star member Marie Gibb Stewart, 214 Garden Ave., Grove City, died Thursday, Jan. 24, 2002, in Mercy Franciscan Hospital, Mount Airy campus in Cincinnati. She was 92. Mrs. Stewart was born Sept. 7, 1909, in Barkeyville to Harold and Olive McClintock Gibb. She was a former registered nurse. A homemaker, Mrs. Stewart was a member of East Main Presbyterian Church; and Order of the Eastern Star Chapter 86, both Grove City. She was an avid reader and bridge player. Her husband, George A. Stewart, whom she married June 1, 1931, died Aug. 6, 1994. Surviving are: a daughter, Marcia S. Lucas, Cincinnati; a sister, Evelyn White, Ripley, N.Y.; two grandchildren, Beth Muench and Christopher Lucas; and five great-grandchildren, Jenna and Aaron Muench; Andrew and Jeremy Lucas; and Mandy Muench. Besides her husband, Mrs. Stewart was preceded in death by her parents; and one son, George G. Stewart, who died May 18, 2000.
STEWART Helen G. Horodnic Castiglione Hermitage homemaker was member of St. Adalbert's A funeral Mass will be held Saturday for Helen G. Horodnic Castiglione, 3276 Morefield Road, Hermitage. She died at 10:50 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2002, in Nugent Convalescent Home, Hermitage, after a lengthy illness. She was 80. Mrs. Castiglione was born Jan. 21, 1922, in Farrell to Casmir and Elizabeth Karlonowicz Horodniczy. She worked at one time for Delphi Packard Electric System in Warren, Ohio; and for what is now Sharon Regional Health System. A homemaker, Mrs. Castiglione was a member of St. Adalbert's Church in Farrell and its Infant Jesus of Prague Society. Surviving are: her husband Salvatore Castiglione, whom she married Nov. 10, 1962 in St. Adalbert's Church; a sister, Sophie Miklo, wife of Paul, Greenville; and two brothers, Mike Horodnic, West Middlesex; and George Horodnic, Hermitage. Mrs. Castiglione was preceded in death by two sisters, Ann Karkoska and Mary Russell; and four brothers, Joseph, Frank, John and Stanley Horodnic.
