Audrey L. Cook Studios co-owner, elder was fraternal groups member A funeral service will be held Thursday for Audrey L. Cook, 740 Fredonia Road, Perry Township. She died early Sunday morning (2-17-02) in UPMC Horizon, Greenville. She was 59. Mrs. Cook was born Aug. 8, 1942, in Meadville to Lawrence and Iza Hollabaugh Slingluff. A graduate of Commodore Perry High School Class of 1960, she attended Thiel College in Greenville for one year. She and her husband, Harley J. Cook Jr., were co-owners for 34 years of Shelly Memorial Studios in Greenville and Sandy Lake. Through the years, Mrs. Cook also participated with her husband in other business ventures. In Greenville, she was a member of Order of the Eastern Star Chapter 63; and Order of the White Shrine of Jerusalem Shrine 47, where she served two terms as Worthy High Priestess and three as Watchman of Shepherds. Mrs. Cook also served on the Supreme committees on the Supreme Floor. As a member of Hadley Presbyterian Church, she was an elder, served on the Session and was clerk of the church for many years. Mrs. Cook also taught Sunday school; was a Bible Study participant; and served on the search committee, a group organized for clergy selection. As a teen-ager, Mrs. Cook was an avid animal lover and had her own horses that she rode and showed at fairs. She loved gardening, cooking, canning and spending time with her pets. Mrs. Cook was a world class traveler and very involved with her grandchildren and her community. Surviving are: her husband, Harley, whom she married Aug. 5, 1961, at home; a son, Randall L. Cook, Greenville; a daughter, Susan Cook Anderson, Champion, Ohio; her mother, Clarks Mills; two brothers, Larry Slingluff, Williamsfield, Ohio; and Dale Slingluff, Hermitage; three grandchildren, Deane, Sadie and Owen; and several nieces and nephews. Mrs. Cook was preceded in death by her father. Memorial contributions may be made to Hadley Presbyterian Church, Box 97, Hadley 16130; or in care of the funeral home to Lupus Research.
COOK Beatrice E. Gill Homemaker was longtime Unity Presbyterian member A funeral service will be held Friday for Beatrice E. Gill, 2308 Mercer-West Middlesex Road, West Middlesex. She died at 3:35 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 17, 2002, in Montefiore Hospital, Pittsburgh, of natural causes after an extended illness. She was 79. Mrs. Gill was born April 19, 1922, in Bangor, Maine, to Leonard and Florance Cashman. She was a homemaker and lifelong member of Unity Presbyterian Church in Lackawannock Township. The member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3374 in Hempfield Township loved to play bingo. Her husband, Frances B. Gill, died Nov. 19, 1991. Surviving are: one daughter, Mrs. Charles (Ella Ann) Minteer, New Mexico; one son, Leonard and his wife, Treda Gill, West Middlesex; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; and a son, Frances S. Gill.
GILL James H. 'Poodie' Platt Volant-area man was WWII veteran, state store manager James H. "Poodie" Platt, RD 3 Volant (Hickory Township, Lawrence County), died at 10:15 a.m. Sunday (2-17-02) in United Community Hospital, Pine Township, after a three-week illness. He was 82. Mr. Platt was born Nov. 19, 1919, in Grove City to James Arthur and Edna McNeal Platt. He retired as store manager after 30 years with Pennsylvania State Liquor Control Board, having worked in Mercer, Hermitage and Farrell retail stores. Mr. Platt once worked for the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette as a circulation manager. He was a World War II veteran, having served in the U.S. Army Air Corps. Mr. Platt was of the Methodist faith. He was a former member of the Mercer Optimist Club; and Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge 1637 in Mercer. Mr. Platt loved to play golf, travel and spend time with his grandchildren. His wife, the former Lois Walton, whom he married June 14, 1948, died Dec. 27, 1981. Surviving are: two daughters, Hilde J. Giannone and her husband, Dennis, New Castle; and Phyllis I. Smith, and her husband, Brad, Slippery Rock; two sons, Rodney K. Platt and his wife, Trish, Scottsdale, Ariz.; and Richard M. Platt, Austin, Texas; one brother, Charles A. Platt, Miami, Fla.; and four grandchildren, Mark Giannone, New Castle; and Emily, Neil and Abigail Smith, all Slippery Rock.
PLATT Doris J. McLusky Doris J. McLusky, formerly of 819 Karen Lane, Hermitage, died at 1:20 a.m. today (2-19-02) in Hospitality Care Center, Hermitage. She was 83. Obituary information was incomplete.
McLUSKY Mary Jane McElree St. Michael's member was homemaker, doll collector A Mass of Christian burial will be held Thursday for Mary Jane McElree, 154 Plum St., Greenville. She died at 1:23 a.m. Monday, Feb. 18, 2002, in UPMC Horizon, Greenville. She was 75. Mrs. McElree was born Aug. 5, 1926, in Harrisburg to Joseph L. and Ruth A. Cooke Dowling. She graduated from Peabody High School, Pittsburgh; and Mercy Hospital School of Nursing, also Pittsburgh, where she earned a degree as a registered nurse. The homemaker was a member of St. Michael's Church in Greenville. She was involved in various community groups and activities and was a collector of foreign and antique dolls. Surviving are: her husband, Dr. James C. McElree, whom she married April 1, 1949, at home; three daughters, Janine Moats, Greenville; Colleen "Katie" McElree, Redondo Beach, Calif.; and Susan M. Donohue, Pittsburgh; one son, James C. McElree, Annapolis, Md.; one sister, Kathryn Dowling Pelish, Patchogue, N.Y.; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Timothy F. McElree; and an infant daughter, Mary McElree. McELREE Daniel Bocko Dorothy F. Bocko Hermitage man was Marine, retired from Polk Center; wife was hospital volunteer, employment office retiree A funeral Mass will be held Wednesday for Daniel and Dorothy F. Bocko of 1645 Orangeville Road, Hermitage. He passed away unexpectedly at 10:53 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 16, 2002, after being stricken at home. He was 79. His wife passed away peacefully, surrounded by her husband and family at 2:15 p.m. Saturday in the intensive care unit of UPMC Horizon, Farrell. She was 75. Mr. Bocko was born Oct. 9, 1922, in Youngstown, a son of Daniel and Zophia Chalupka Bocko. He moved to Sharon at the age of two and graduated from Sharon High School. Mr. Bocko was also a Youngstown State University alumnus, having received his bachelor's degree in accounting. Following a career in the public and private sectors, he retired in 1987 as an institutional collections officer for Polk Center. He was a lifelong member of Sts. Peter and Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church in Sharon. A U.S. Marine Corps veteran, Mr. Bocko served in the Central Pacific during World War II. A devoted husband, father and grandfather, he married the former Dorothy F. Dobrosky on Sept. 10, 1949. They met while working together at the Pennsylvania State Employment Service in Sharon. Mrs. Bocko was born April 6, 1926, in Slickville, Pa., to Joseph Dobrosky and Anna Markin Dobrosky. Dorothy and her family moved to what is now Hermitage in 1926. She graduated from Hickory High School. Mrs. Bocko retired in 1988 after 37½ years from Pennsylvania State Employment Service in Sharon. She was a 15-year active volunteer with Sharon Regional Health System's Hospice Home Care Program in Hermitage. She was a lifelong member of Church of the Sacred Heart in Sharon. A devoted wife, mother and grandmother, she married Daniel Bocko on Sept. 10, 1949. Surviving Mr. and Mrs. Bocko are: two daughters, Anna Mary Hoovler, wife of Dr. Dennis W. Hoovler, Hermitage; and Kathryn Bocko James, wife of Daniel E. James, Greenville; one son, Daniel R. Bocko and his wife Anne, Buffalo, Minn.; and two grandchildren, Lindsay Rebecca Bocko and Daniel Eric James. Mr. Bocko also leaves: a sister, Mrs. Donald (Sophia) Mihm, Sharpsville; and two brothers and their spouses, Michael Bocko and his wife Emily, Littleton, Colo.; and Edward Bocko and his wife Nana, Palmyra, Va. In addition, Mrs. Bocko leaves three sisters, Sophie O'Brien, Masury; Jennie Dominski, Hermitage; and Anne Richards, Ormond Beach, Fla. Daniel was preceded in death by his parents; an infant brother; and a sister, Anna Bocko. Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Walter and Rudolph Dobrosky; and two sisters, Mildred Bodnar and Nellie Husenita. BOCKO Karoline Ann Berthold Shelatree Pine Township homemaker belonged to Galilean Baptist Karoline Ann Berthold Shelatree, 19 Orchard Drive, Pine Township, died at 5:55 p.m. Monday, Feb. 18, 2002, in United Community Hospital, Pine Township, after an extended illness. She was 63. Mrs. Shelatree was born Sept. 25, 1938, in Pittsburgh to William C. and Ann L. Koenig Berthold. A homemaker, she was a member of Galilean Baptist Church in Grove City. Her husband, Roy A. Shelatree, whom she married Feb. 23, 1957, died Jan. 31, 1999. Surviving are: seven children, Mrs. Frederick (Frances L.) Reash, Elizabeth I. Canfield and Mrs. John (Patricia P.) Sestak, all Grove City; William R. Shelatree and his wife Peggy, Prospect, Butler County; Rodger E. Shelatree and his wife Mary Jane, Eau Claire, Butler County; Donald Shelatree and his wife Angela, Ohio; and Christopher Shelatree; her father, Grove City; three sisters, Mrs. James (Margaret) McNeish, Mesa, Ariz.; Mrs. Harold (Donna) Kohlmeyer, Ellwood City; and Kathy Berthold, Grove City; and 14 grandchildren. Besides her husband, Mrs. Shelatree was preceded in death by her mother; and two grandsons, David Sestak and William "Billy" Shelatree Jr.
SHELATREE Carl G. Bridenbaugh Ex-WE inspector, ad man in Iowa ran local campgrounds A funeral service will be held Thursday for Carl G. Bridenbaugh, 182 S. Berry Road, West Salem Township. He died at 3:02 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 17, 2002, in the emergency room of UPMC Horizon, Greenville. He was 85. Mr. Bridenbaugh was born Feb. 22, 1916, in Martinsburg, Pa., to Carl G. and Rebecca D. Gifford Bridenbaugh. He attended Williamsburg (Pa.) High School; Mercersburg (Pa.) Academy; and Franklin & Marshall College, Lancaster, Pa. Mr. Bridenbaugh worked as a superintendent at the Blair County (Pa.) Children's Home until he was called into the U.S. Army during World War II from 1943-46. After his tour of duty, he worked at Blair County Courthouse. From 1957 to 1965, Mr. Bridenbaugh was employed at the former Sharon Transformer Division of Westinghouse Electric Corp. as a safety inspector. He then became advertising salesman for Thomas D. Murphy Co. of Red Oak, Iowa, for more than 30 years. Mr. Bridenbaugh and his wife Jeanne also owned and operated Enchanted Acres Campground in West Salem Township. He was a 32nd degree Mason and belonged to Free and Accepted Masons Portage Lodge 220 in Hollidaysburg, Pa.; and Scottish Rite's New Castle Consistory. Mr. Bridenbaugh was also a longtime member of Sharpsville Service Club. He enjoyed traveling and golfing and was a member of Bronzewood Golf Club in Kinsman. His favorite pastime was working on his Enchanted Acres. Surviving are: his wife, the former Jeanne L. Simpson, whom he married Aug. 14, 1940, at home; two daughters, Mrs. Raymond (Susan) McAlevy, Birmingham, Ala.; and Bette Bridenbaugh, Greenville; two sons, C. Gifford Bridenbaugh and his wife Sande, Shelby, Ala.; and Jay F. Bridenbaugh and his wife Sheila, Cortland; five grandchildren; eight stepgrandchildren; one great-grandson; and numerous stepgreat-grandchildren. Mr. Bridenbaugh was preceded in death by his parents.
BRIDENBAUGH Susie Mae Watkins Susie Mae Watkins, Masury, formerly of 15400 W. Seven Mile Road, Detroit, died at 9:55 a.m. Monday (2-18-02) in Orange Village Care Center, Masury, following an extended illness. She was 98. Obituary information was incomplete.
