Today's obituaries Theresa Balakoff Longtime ex-Hubbard woman was active in sports, politics COLUMBIANA, Ohio -- Theresa Balakoff, Columbiana, formerly of Hubbard, died Wednesday morning, Feb. 27, 2002, in St. Mary's Alzheimer's Center -- Windsor House, Columbiana. She was 74. Mrs. Balakoff was born Sept. 17, 1927, in Campbell, Ohio, a daughter of Michael and Ann Kraynak Kozak. She was a lifelong area resident, living in Hubbard since 1959. Mrs. Balakoff, also known as Terry, worked for Peoples, Lane and Rite Aid drug stores for 25 years. She was a member of St. Patrick's Church in Hubbard; and was a volunteer for the Democratic party and an election worker. She also was a Hubbard Boosterette and was very active in sports and Little League baseball. Her husband, John "Blue" Balakoff, whom she married Jan. 17, 1948, died May 16, 1995. She leaves: two sons, Gary M. Balakoff and his wife Kathy, Orwigsburg, Pa.; and Gregory J. Balakoff and his wife Bonnie, Hermitage; three sisters, Ann Banyots and Helen Giba, both Youngstown; and Agnes Lekwar, Pittsburgh; and four grandsons. Besides her husband, Mrs. Balakoff was preceded in death by three brothers, Lawrence, Michael and Joseph Kozak. BALAKOFF Stephen A. Bertolasio '60 Sharpsville grad, Army vet worked for Atlas Energy Stephen A. Bertolasio, 1902 Park Lane, Pymatuning Township, formerly of 335 Tamarack Drive, South Pymatuning Township, died at 10:29 Tuesday, Feb. 26, 2002, in the emergency room of Sharon Regional Health System after suffering an apparent heart attack. He was 59. Mr. Bertolasio was born April 25, 1942, in Sharon to Dominick and Mary Scongrady Bertolasio. A 1960 graduate of Sharpsville High School, he was employed by Atlas Energy Group Inc. in Jackson Center as a well tender. Mr. Bertolasio also worked for the former Sharon Transformer Division of Westinghouse Electric Corp. He was of the Catholic faith and belonged to Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7599 in Reynolds. A U.S. Army veteran, Mr. Bertolasio served as a radio teletype operator from 1964 to 1970, stationed in Germany. He enjoyed hunting, NASCAR racing and auto mechanics. Surviving are: his wife, the former Sherrell Oliver, whom he married April 25, 1975, at home; one daughter, Mrs. Robert (Stephanie) Lawrence, Hermitage; one son, Stephen S. Bertolasio and his wife Mandy, Greenville; his mother, Sharpsville; five sisters, Ester Amon, Fowler; Christine George, Brookfield; Pat Danos, Sharon; and Anna Marie Bonaquest and Marian Senkosky, both Sharpsville; three brothers, Robert Bertolasio, New Bedford; and David and Frank Bertolasio, both Sharpsville; and three grandchildren, Corey and Cameron Lawrence; and Andrew Bertolasio. Mr. Bertolasio was preceded in death by his father; and one brother, Dominick Bertolasio. Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.
BERTOLASIO Mary Jean 'Toni' Campagna Retired Farrell teacher also taught as a volunteer A funeral Mass will be celebrated Saturday for Mary Jean "Toni" Campagna of 68 Stone Ridge Blvd., Hermitage. She passed away at 10:55 p.m. Tuesday (2-26-02) in Clepper Manor in Sharon following an extended illness. She was 77. Toni was born Aug. 1, 1924, in Austin, Potter County, Pa., a daughter of Joseph and Rose Asselto Licastro. She was an alumna of the Port Allegheny (Pa.) High School Class of 1942 and went on to graduate from what was Indiana State Teachers College in 1945, where she earned a bachelor's degree in education. While attending college, she was a member of the Alpha Sigma Alpha Sorority. She was employed by Farrell Area School District for 27 years in the high school, where she taught Spanish. She retired in 1988. A volunteer, she taught Spanish for 11 years to students at Notre Dame Elementary School in Hermitage; and also taught Adult Continuing Education Class offered by the City of Hermitage. She also was a volunteer at what is now Shenango Valley Community Library in Sharon, assisting with the library's reading programs. Toni was a member of Church of Notre Dame in Hermitage; Pennsylvania State Education Association; American Business Women's Association; and College Club of Sharon. Surviving are: one daughter with whom she lived, Candise Marie Beil and her husband, Fred, Hermitage; and two sons, Robert J. Campagna and his wife, Janet, Alta Loma, Calif.; and Samuel J. "Jay" Campagna III and his wife, Barbara, Davenport, Iowa. She was preceded in death by one son, Mark Campagna; and one sister, Dolores Licastro. CAMPAGNA Isaac F. Clarke Isaac F. Clarke, 275 Sterling Ave., Sharon, died at 11:24 p.m. Tuesday (2-26-02) in O'Brien Memorial Nursing Home, Masury. He was 80. Obituary information was incomplete.
CLARKE Robert Albert Daniels WWII vet, police chief, bus driver ran heavy equipment Robert Albert Daniels, 78, of Arepeka, Fla., formerly of Grove City and Greenville, passed away Feb. 26, 2002, at 8 a.m. in Bayonet Point Regional Hospital, Hudson, Fla., after a lengthy illness. He was born to Charles and Della Daniels on Sept. 14, 1924, in Venango County. He married Gertrude Jane Westlake on July 21, 1945. She survives at home. He served in the U.S. Army in World War II in Japan. Bob was a member of the NPR Moose Lodge 1747 of Hudson and a former member of Mercer Moose Lodge. He was a bus driver for O.D. Anderson Coach and Tour, Sugar Grove Township; and Grove City Bus Lines. He also worked for Seidle Sand and Gravel and was a heavy equipment operator. Bob was former police chief for Pine Township and Harrisville. Besides his wife, he leaves a son, Steven "Tiny" Daniels, Arepeka; a granddaughter; and two grandsons, all Florida; a niece, Mrs. Allen (Tena Welton) Bates of Spring Hill, Fla.; and a nephew, Sgt. George Welton, stationed in Germany, whom he helped rear. Several other nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews also survive. Preceding him in death were his parents; five brothers, Clyde, Clarence, Melvin, Floyd "Pat" and Clifford; and five sisters, Mrs. Perry (Nellie) Hedglin, Mrs. Eustace (Myrtle) Booher, Mrs. William (Elizabeth) Doutt, Mrs. Delbert (Mary) Wolfe and Mrs. Gerald (Dorothy) Snyder. Cremation with a memorial service is to be held later at the family's convenience.

HUDSON Kathrine Elizabeth List Retiree, Brookfield caterer was Orange Village employee Kathrine Elizabeth List, 895 State Route 7 N.E., Brookfield, died at 8:40 a.m. Wednesday (2-27-02) in her home. She was 75. Mrs. List was born in Shenango Township on April 26, 1926, a daughter of Stephen and Anna Yaremko Biros. She retired in 1973 from the Interstate United Co., Youngstown, as a supervisor after 33 years of service. She had also been employed by Orange Village Care Center, Masury, in the dietary department for 17 years. She most recently was the owner/operator of KDL Catering, Brookfield, with her son for 13 years. In her spare time, she enjoyed gardening and bingo. She was Greek Orthodox by faith. Her husband, Elmer A. List, whom she married Feb. 8, 1958, died Oct. 29, 1987. Surviving are: one son, David E. List, Brookfield; one daughter, Sharon Doddato and her husband, Robert, Sharpsville; two sisters, Mary Gajewski, Pittsburgh; and Helen Rager, West Middlesex; one brother, Andrew Biros, Eugene, Ore.; and four grandsons, Maurice and Quentin List and Robert and Jon Doddato. She was preceded in death by her parents; six brothers, Michael, George, Stephen, Peter, John and Joseph Biros; and one sister, Ann Dadio. MORTON Merle Winsor Phillips Sr. Electrician, Mason lived in New Castle, had son here Merle Winsor Phillips Sr., 122 Aiken Road, New Castle, died Feb. 26, 2002, in his son's residence in Okeechobee, Fla. He was 69. Mr. Phillips was born Oct. 19, 1932, in New Castle to Russell M. and Alice Lavarack Phillips. He was an electrician for 36 years with International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local Union 712 in Beaver. The member of Trinity Episcopal Church, New Castle, also belonged to Free and Accepted Masons New Castle Lodge 642 and was a 32nd Degree Mason. He was an avid bowler and member of numerous other local social clubs. His wife, the former Betty Jane Tokar, died May 2, 1999. Surviving are: three daughters, Roxanne McConahy and Pamela Brown, both New Castle; and Judy Brown, Chesapeake, Va.; three sons, Randall S. Phillips, Farrell; David A. Phillips, Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; and Merle W. Phillips Jr., Okeechobee; two sisters, Lucille Robison, New Castle; and Shirley Jimenez, Los Angeles; 12 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Darrell A. Phillips; four brothers, Russell S. Phillips; Wilbur A. Phillips, Halland C. Phillips and Earl D. Phillips; and one sister, Martha Phillips.

SINKUC Frank S. 'Kum' Sniezek GATX worker was member of St. Ann's, enjoyed polka Frank S. "Kum" Sniezek, 7217 W. Market St., Mercer, died peacefully at home surrounded by his children at 3:10 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 27, 2002. He was 76. Mr. Sniezek was born March 8, 1925, in Edinburg, Lawrence County, to Joseph and Mary Ann Mady Sniezek. He was a finisher for 35 years at General American Transportation Corp.'s former Masury plant and worked in local construction trades as a carpenter. Mr. Sniezek was a member of St. Ann's Church in Farrell. He loved to polka and enjoyed traveling and riding his Cub Cadet tractor. His wife, the former Anna M. Murcko, whom he married July 24, 1948, died March 18, 2001. Surviving are: three sons, Frances E. Sniezek, New Castle; Victor Sniezek, Hermitage; and Wendell A. Sniezek, Sharon; three daughters, Pauline M. Sniezek, Aspen, Colo.; Christina M. Sniezek-Haas, Stewart, Fla.; and Anna M. Sniezek, Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; a brother, Edward Sniezek; and a sister, Helen Presnar, both New Castle; six grandchildren, Jennifer, Scott, Matthew, Catlyn and Shannon Sniezek; and Robert Trip Haas; and the deceased's English golden retriever, Max. Besides his wife, Mr. Sniezek was preceded in death by one daughter, Claudia Rose Sniezek; two brothers, John and Walter Sniezek; and one sister, Laura Duzyk. SNIEZEK Averal Florence Uber Ex-Grove City homemaker was member of Grace U.M. Averal Florence Uber, Pine Township, formerly of Collegeview Towers, Grove City, died at 7:15 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 27, 2002, in Orchard Manor, Pine Township. She was 81. Mrs. Uber was born Feb. 17, 1921, in Butler County to George N. Pryor and Bertha Sloan Pryor. A homemaker, she was a member of Grace United Methodist Church in Grove City. Her husband, Vernon R. Uber, whom she married Dec. 9, 1939, died June 28, 1995. Surviving are: two sons, David W. Uber and V. Gary Uber, both Grove City; one brother, Robert Pryor, Hermitage; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Besides her husband, Mrs. Uber was preceded in death by her parents; and one brother, Virgil Pryor.
UBER Anthe Zahariou Greece native, former Farrell woman had daughter in GC A memorial service will be held Saturday, March 2, 2002, at 2 p.m. in Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses in Canfield, Ohio, for Anthe Zahariou of Fayetteville, Ga., formerly of Greenford, Ohio; and Farrell. She died Feb. 21, 2002, in a Fayetteville nursing home. She was 94. Mrs. Zahariou was born Aug. 15, 1908, in Megalopolis, Greece. She was a member of the Canfield (Ohio) Congregation of Jehovah's Witnesses. Anthe leaves three daughters, Lydia Love of Fayetteville; Mary Smith of Greenford; and Eleen Gilkey of Grove City. She also leaves two sisters and four brothers as well as seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Peter Zahariou, whom she married April 10, 1926, and who passed away in December 1972.
