Helen Blau Simon Ex-Farrell homemaker was Temple Beth Israel member BEAVER VALLEY -- Helen Blau Simon, 246 Friendship Circle, Beaver, formerly of Farrell, died at noon Thursday, March 7, 2002, in Beaver Valley Geriatric Center. She was 86. Mrs. Simon was born July 8, 1915, in New York City to Frank K. and Anna Rosner Blau. A homemaker, she was a member of Temple Beth Israel in Sharon. She had also belonged to the former B'nai Zion Synagogue in Farrell and its Sisterhood. Her husband, George Simon, whom she married in January 1939, died Sept. 21, 1994. Surviving are: one daughter, Fern Hudspeth, wife of Earl, Beaver Falls; one son, Marvin Simon, Pittsburgh; one brother, Saul Blau, Philadelphia; and two grandsons, Brett Hudspeth and Trey Hudspeth, both Beaver Falls. Mrs. Simon was preceded in death by her parents; one sister, Rose Newberg; and one brother, Sidney Blau. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Miriam Bard Educational Fund in care of Temple Beth Israel, 840 Highland Road, Sharon 16146.

Doris N. Myers, Hermitage, formerly of 1232 E. State St. and what is now Cordia Commons at the Shenango Inn, both Sharon, passed away at 2:30 a.m. Thursday, March 7, 2002, of natural causes in Nugent Convalescent Home, Hermitage. She was 90. Mrs. Myers was born June 24, 1911, in Sharon, a daughter of Michael Nolan and Freda Kloss Nolan. A 1929 graduate of Sharon High School, she retired in April 1975 after 20 years as a junior draftsperson in the nameplate division of the former Sharon Transformer Division of Westinghouse Electric Corp. Mrs. Myers was a 50-year member of Covenant Presbyterian Church in Sharon and belonged to several card clubs. She also enjoyed playing bingo. Surviving are: two daughters, Mrs. Archie (Phyllis F.) Laverty; and Mrs. Gerald (Eudora L. "Dolly") Braho, both Sharon; two sons, Donald R. Myers, Bell Air, Md.; and Philip R. Myers, Hubbard; 18 grandchildren; and 32 great-grandchildren. Mrs. Myers was preceded in death by her parents; one son, Lee E. Myers; one brother, Clifford Nolan; and four sisters, Evelyn Means, Irene Seidle, Isabelle Campbell and Gladys Burdette.
MYERS David R. Smith Ind. resident's grandparents live in Wheatland, Greenville ANDERSON, Ind. -- David R. Smith, 20, Anderson, former resident of Yorktown, Ind., died unexpectedly Tuesday (3-5-02) in Cape Coral, Fla. He was born in Jefferson City, Mo., moved to Yorktown as a child, graduated from Yorktown High School in 1999 and later moved to Anderson. He was an equipment operator for Infrastructure Contractors Inc. in Noblesville, Ind. He attended St. Mary's Catholic Church in Muncie while living in Yorktown. Surviving are: his father, Carl Smith, Anderson; his mother, Deborah Foster and her husband, Thomas, Muncie; two brothers, Carl Smith III and Craig Smith, both Anderson; a sister, Danielle Smith, Bloomington, Ind.; his maternal grandparents, John and Jean Bohach, Wheatland; his paternal grandmother, Sally Smith, Greenville; and several aunts, uncles and cousins. Memorials may be directed to the donor's choice.
SMITH Dr. Thomas J. Powers Retired educator had daughter in Hubbard Dr. Thomas J. Powers, 105 Diamond Way, Cortland, died at 9:45 a.m. Wednesday (3-6-02) in his residence following a lengthy illness. He was 70. Dr. Powers was born Sept. 25, 1931, in Chicago to Michael Powers and Marie D'Andrea Powers. He lived in the Warren (Ohio) area since 1976, coming from South Euclid, Ohio. Dr. Powers earned a bachelor's degree in education from the University of Illinois; and a master's degree and doctorate from Michigan State University, East Lansing. As an educator for 25 years, he served as superintendent of schools in Cherry Hill (Mich.) School District from 1968-72; in South Euclid School District from 1972-76; and in Howland Township School District from 1976-1977. Dr. Powers was a member of National Superintendents Association; Howland Retired Teachers Association; and University of Illinois Alumni Association. He was one of the founding members of the Howland Rotary Club and was active in many community projects. He belonged to Christ Episcopal Church in Warren. Dr. Powers was the longest surviving Cleveland Clinic heart transplant patient at 15 years. He is survived by his wife, the former Helen Knapp, whom he married Oct. 20, 1989. Also surviving are: two daughters, Nancy Etzold, Aurora, Ill.; and Dess Fedele, Hubbard; one son, Mathew Powers, Broadview Heights, Ohio; three stepchildren, Heather Johnson, Cedarburg, Wis.; Bonnie Kid, Ann Arbor, Mich.; and Bruce Maclaren, Munich, Germany; two brothers, Michael Powers, Desplaines, Ill.; and David Powers, Chicago; and six grandchildren. Dr. Powers was preceded in death by his first wife, the former Jan Overholt, whom he married in 1958. She died in 1985. A son, David Powers, is also deceased. POWERS Katherine J. Stewart Rodgers Homemaker, ex-teacher was East Main church member Katherine J. Stewart Rodgers, 604 Woodland Ave., Grove City, died at 4:30 a.m. today, March 8, 2002, in her residence after a short illness. She was 81. Mrs. Rodgers was born Aug. 31, 1920, in Sharon to Carl Stewart and Mary Boyd Jenkins Stewart. A 1938 alumna of Grove City High School, she graduated in 1942 from Grove City College and was a former school teacher in Sandy Lake and Meadville prior to her marriage. A homemaker, Mrs. Rodgers was a member of East Main Presbyterian Church in Grove City. She also belonged to Grove City Women's Club and various bridge clubs. Mrs. Rodgers enjoyed bowling and golf. Her husband, Judge Herman M. Rodgers, formerly of Mercer County Common Pleas Court, whom she married July 31, 1946, died May 8, 1996. Surviving are: three children, Patricia Ann Rodgers, Sea Cliff, N.Y.; Michael Stewart Rodgers; and William Carl Rodgers, both Grove City; one sister, Rosemary Kennedy, Grove City; and one brother, Charles Stewart, Minneapolis, Minn. Besides her husband, Mrs. Rodgers was preceded in death by her parents.
Donald W. Nelson Harrisville business co-owner had Nelson Trucking in GC A funeral service will be held Monday for Donald W. Nelson, 1425 W. Main St., Grove City. He died unexpectedly at 3:08 p.m. Wednesday, March 6, 2002, in United Community Hospital, Pine Township. He was 73. Mr. Nelson was born April 19, 1928, in New Castle to Robert A. Nelson and Margaret Eleanor Wilkin Nelson. He was co-owner with his wife, Shirley, of Nelson Trucking, Tire & Towing Service of Harrisville. Mr. Nelson formerly operated Nelson Trucking in Grove City for 32 years before moving in 1994 to Harrisville. He was of the Protestant faith. Mr. Nelson was a former independent Teamster and trucker since 1948 and was previously employed with Aetna Freight Co., Trans American Freight Lines and Jones Motor Freight. Mr. Nelson enjoyed antiques and collecting trucks. He especially enjoyed his grandchildren. Surviving are: his wife, the former Shirley J. Bauder, whom he married Oct. 17, 1947, at the residence; one daughter, Mrs. Steven (Joanne E.) Hetrick, Boiling Springs, Pa.; five sons, David B. Nelson and his wife Karen, Grove City; Robert D. Nelson and his wife Andrea, Warrensburg, Mo.; Rick L. Nelson and his wife Janet, Cleveland; Steven P. Nelson and his wife Diane, San Jose, Calif.; and Thomas J. "T.J." Nelson, Los Angeles; and 12 grandchildren, including seven grandsons, Sean Hetrick, Benjamin Nelson, Nicholas Buchanan, Robert Nelson, Nathan Nelson, Donald Mozzetti and Dan Mozzetti; and five granddaughters, Casey Nelson, Jocelyn Hetrick, Amanda Nelson, Adrienne Nelson and Kaitlin Nelson. Mr. Nelson was preceded in death by his parents.
NELSON Florence Harbach Former Sharon woman taught in Brookfield STURGIS, Mich. -- Florence Harbach, Sturgis, formerly of Sharon and Dayton, Ohio, died at 1:45 a.m. Sunday, March 3, 2002, in Thurston Woods Village. She was 89. Mrs. Harbach was born March 18, 1912, in Marshall, Mich., a daughter to Louis and Effie Haner Calkins. On June 18, 1938, she married the Rev. Sheldon Tiffany Harbach in Detroit. She had been a Sturgis resident since 1976, coming from Sharon. Prior to that, she and her husband served at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church in Dayton, Ohio. Her husband died Dec. 5, 1989. Florence attended the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music. She was a graduate of Michigan State University in East Lansing, where she received her bachelor's degree in music in 1933. Florence had taught music and kindergarten in Kettering, Ohio, and in Brookfield. She was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church in Sturgis and the Episcopal Church Women. She also belonged to Sigma Alpha Iota National Music Fraternity. She is survived by: one daughter, Mary Kathryn Harbach, Milwaukee; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Dale and Dian Harbach, Mason, Mich.; and David Harbach, Mayfield Heights, Ohio; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Memorial contributions may be made in Mrs. Harbach's memory to St. John's Episcopal Church through envelopes available from the funeral home.
HARBACH Dorothy M. Alexander Centenarian was retired nursing home aide LIBERTY TOWNSHIP, TRUM-BULL COUNTY -- Dorothy M. Alexander, Liberty Township, formerly of Burghill, died at 8:35 p.m. Tuesday, March 5, 2002, in Liberty Health Care Center. She was 102. Mrs. Alexander was born Jan. 5, 1900, in Gustavus Township, Trumbull County, to Earl Lane and Alice Gilder Lane. She retired in 1970 from McClead Nursing Home in Vernon, Ohio, where she was employed for 20 years as an aide. Mrs. Alexander previously was an aide for Faber Nursing Home in Fowler. She was a member of Seventh-day Adventist Church, Sharpsville. Her husband, Hudson S. Alexander, whom she married June 22, 1941, died April 8, 1970. She is survived by several nieces and nephews. Besides her husband, Mrs. Alexander was preceded in death by her parents, one sister and three brothers. Memorial contributions may be made to Seventh-day Adventist Church, 131 N. Mercer Ave., Sharpsville 16150; or to a charity of the donor's choice.
ALEXANDER Susan J. Skawski Morimando School teacher was wife of Mercer church pastor Susan J. Skawski Morimando, 627 San Chez Terrace, Coolspring Township, died at 8:26 p.m. Wednesday, March 6, 2002, in her residence after a nine-month illness. She was 44. Mrs. Morimando was born July 22, 1957, in New York City to Dr. John Skawski and Carleen Brown Skawski. An alumna of Buffalo State University and Slippery Rock University of Pennsylvania, both from which she earned bachelor of science degrees, Mrs. Morimando was a teacher at Washington Elementary School in the Moniteau School District. She was a member of Spirit of Life Christian Fellowship Church in Mercer. Surviving are: her husband, the Rev. Michael G. Morimando, whom she married May 21, 1983; two daughters, Stephanie Morimando and Lindsey Morimando; and one son, Stephen Morimando, all at the residence; her parents, Dryden, N.Y.; and one brother, John W. Skawski, Ithaca, N.Y.
