Albert E. 'Chief' Laslow
WE retiree owned early TV repair shop, showed horses

Albert E. "Chief" Laslow of 988 Haig Street in Sharon, passed away at 11:27 p.m. Saturday (3-9-02) in the hospital of Sharon Regional Health System following a brief illness. He was 82.

Mr. Laslow was born Jan. 21, 1920, in Leechburg, a son of Andrew and Julia Soltez Laslow.

He moved to the area as a young boy and graduated from Farrell High School. After high school, he served with the United States Army in the Signal Corps in the South Pacific Theater of Operations.

While serving in the Signal Corps, he gained the knowledge necessary to work as an electrician and, when he returned home, he worked for the former Sharon Transformer Division of Westinghouse Electric Corp. as a tester, retiring in 1986.

Mr. Laslow also owned one of the first television repair stores in the Shenango Valley, located on Idaho Street in Farrell.

He was a member of Church of the Sacred Heart in Sharon.

Mr. Laslow's greatest love was showing horses. He owned a champion Arabian stallion named "Lidell," which won national recognition as the greatest horse of its day.

Albert was a member of the International Arabian Horse Association, and served on its board of directors. He was also chief electrician for the Western Reserve Classic Horse Show.

His wife, the former Helen M. Matias, whom he married Aug. 17, 1945, survives at home.

He also leaves: a daughter, Nanette L. Laslow, at home; three sisters, Ethel Szuch, Leechburg; Betty Bogner, Masury; and Teressa Trinckes, Brookfield; and five brothers, Paul Laslow, Warren, Ohio; Ernest Laslow, Farrell; Joseph Laslow, Hermitage; Robert Laslow, Sharon; and James Laslow, New York City.

He was preceded in death by his sister, Julia Snyder; and a brother, John Laslow.

Lawrence Albert Mook

Former Grove City resident retired from Sharon Steel

Lawrence Albert Mook, formerly of Grove City, died at 5:30 p.m. Saturday, March 9, 2002, in Countryside Assisted Living Center, East Lackawannock Township, after a brief illness. He was 91.

Mr. Mook was born July 2, 1910, in Meadville to Frank Mook and Gertrude Matilda Williams Mook.

A 1926 graduate of Meadville High School, Mr. Mook retired as a painter from the former Sharon Steel Corp.'s Farrell plant. He was a member of Mercer United Methodist Church.

Surviving are: his wife, the former Carol Bullis, whom he married June 8, 1943, at the residence; four daughters, Eleanor Mook Wilson and her husband Pat, Sharon; Joanne Mook Fry, Vienna; Bernadine Hunt Morley and her husband Murray, West Palm Beach, Fla.; and Crystobel Hunt Palovich, Norfolk, Va.; four sons, Lawrence R. "Bud" Mook and his wife Shirley, Greenville; Clayre E. Mook and his wife Marybeth, New Wilmington; Seth Hunt and his wife Nina, Bowmanville, Canada; and Gaylord Hunt and his wife Shirley, Augusta, Ga.; 26 grandchildren; and a number of great-grandchildren.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Richard Vance Mook; seven sisters; and two brothers.

Kenneth F. Eakin

Retired Harrisville postmaster was Mason, active in church

Kenneth F. Eakin, Main Street, Harrisville, died at 2:40 a.m. Saturday, March 9, 2002, in Trinity Living Center, Grove City, after a three-week illness. He was 95.

Mr. Eakin was born Oct. 29, 1906, in Hendersonville to John C. Eakin and Susan C. Galloway Eakin.

He retired after 37 years as postmaster for the U.S. Post Office in Harrisville and previously worked for the post office in downtown Pittsburgh.

A U.S. Navy veteran, Mr. Eakin served during World War II and was a charter member of American Legion Post 852 in Harrisville.

He was one of the founders and a former secretary/treasurer of the Harrisville Volunteer Fire Department.

Mr. Eakin was a member of the Federal Employees Association and served for 30 years as secretary/treasurer of Harrisville Cemetery Association, for which he was a director.

He was the second-oldest living graduate of former Harrisville High School and an 82-year member of Harrisville United Methodist Church, where he taught Sunday school for 26 years and belonged to the church choir.

As a member for more than 50 years of Free and Accepted Masons Lodge 603 in Grove City and Scottish Rites New Castle Consistory, Mr. Eakin also belonged to Syria Mosque Shrine in Pittsburgh.

His first wife, the former Hazel Morrison, whom he married in 1926, died Feb. 22, 1930. His second wife, the former Hilda R. Harner, whom he married Nov. 23, 1936, died Nov. 5, 1980.

Surviving are: one daughter, Barbara Gibson, Butler; one son, K. Keith Eakin, Mount Vernon, Ohio; five grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Besides his first and second wives, Mr. Eakin was preceded in death by his parents; one daughter, Sally Ann Snyder; two brothers, Hiram Eakin and Alvin Eakin; and one sister, Pearl Eakin.

James E. Wygal

Mercer man was retired owner of TV business

James E. Wygal, 102½ N. Pitt St.. Mercer, died unexpectedly at 1:17 p.m. Saturday, March 9, 2002, in UPMC Horizon, Farrell, of a heart attack. He was 65.

Mr. Wygal was born March 14, 1936, in Jackson Center to Roland and Harriet B. Evans Wygal.

A graduate of Grove City High School and Gateway Technical Institute in Pittsburgh, he retired as owner/operator of the former Wygal TV in Mercer.

Mr. Wygal was a member of Bethany Presbyterian Church in Mercer; and Free and Accepted Masons Lodge 575 in Coolspring Township.

Surviving are: his wife, the former Gloria "Peg" King, whom he married Sept. 16, 1962, at the residence; two daughters, Amy E. Marks, Fredonia; and Krystal A. Wygal, Mercer; one son, James E. Wygal II, Sharpsville; his mother, Grove City; three brothers, Richard Wygal and his wife Shirley, Auburn, Ga.; and Donald Wygal and his wife Carol, Lawrenceville, N.J.; and James's twin, John "Jack" Wygal and his wife Ruthann, Evanston, Ill.; and three grandchildren, Eric Z., Natalie E. and Gregory J. Marks.

Mr. Wygal was preceded in death by his father; and one brother, Robert Wygal.

Anna Ruth Magee Conner

'53 GC grad served church, was retired nurse, ran farm

Anna Ruth Magee Conner, 132 Center Church Road, Pine Township, died at 8:15 a.m. Saturday, March 9, 2002, in the home of her son, Curtis Conner, 362 W. Market St., Mercer, after a 1½-year long illness. She was 66.

Mrs. Conner was born March 30, 1935, in Springfield Township to George Randall Magee and Margaret May Struthers Magee.

A 1953 alumna of Grove City High School, she graduated in 1956 from Butler Hospital School of Nursing and earned a bachelor's degree in nursing from Pennsylvania State University.

Mrs. Conner retired in 1992 from United Community Hospital, Pine Township, where she was a director of nursing. She had worked there since 1956.

She also operated Conner Dairy Farm with her husband Harold. She previously retired in 1996 from Pennsylvania Department of Health after four years as a hospital inspector.

As a member of Center Presbyterian Church in Grove City, Mrs. Conner served as a deacon and an elder.

She was a former board member of Grove City United Way and American Heart Association of Mercer County.

Her husband, Harold Edgar Conner, whom she married June 15, 1956, died Nov. 11, 2001.

Surviving besides her son, Curtis, and his wife Maureen, are: four other children and their spouses, Mrs. Edward (Karen) Palmer, Grove City; Kevin Conner and his wife Suzanne, also Mercer; Mrs. Mark (Carol) Hughes, Volant; and Craig Conner and his wife Amy, Scottsville, Va.; one brother, Randall E. Magee, Mercer; and 12 grandchildren.

Besides her husband, Mrs. Conner was preceded in death by her parents; and two infant brothers.

Homemaker was formerly of Stoneboro

G. Maxine Dunkle, 748 Greenville Road, Coolspring Township; formerly of Walnut Street, Stoneboro, died unexpectedly at 10:40 a.m. Sunday (3-10-02) in the emergency room of United Community Hospital, Pine Township. She was 78.

Mrs. Dunkle was born Jan. 18, 1924, in Butler to Alexander M. and Eliza J. Lucas Sharp.

She was a 1941 graduate of the former Stoneboro High School.

A homemaker, Mrs. Dunkle was of the Protestant faith and enjoyed sewing, crocheting, reading and listening to music.

In her earlier years, she was an avid bingo player and, with her husband, was active in harness racing in the area.

Mrs. Dunkle enjoyed her family and friends.

She married Harold M. Dunkle on July 18, 1942. He preceded her in death March 15, 1992.

Surviving are: six daughters, Mrs. Richard A. (Audre "Tete") King; Mrs. John R. (Maxine L.) Redfoot; and Polly A. Hogue, all Stoneboro; Marline I. Quillen, Little River, S.C.; and Mrs. Joseph W. (Madine R.) Wygant; and Mrs. Mark D. (Alexa) Schell, both Sandy Lake; two sisters, Mrs. Donald (June) Bohlender, Hermitage; and Audre Gray, Crystal River, Fla.; 13 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Besides her husband, Mrs. Dunkle was preceded in death by one son, Harold M. "Skip" Dunkle Jr.; and one brother, Alex M. Sharp Jr.

Frederick G. Caswell

Damascus retiree served in Army Air Corps in WWII

Frederick G. Caswell, 559 Mercer Road, Greenville, died at 12:45 p.m. Saturday, March 9, 2002, in Trinity Living Center, Grove City, after an extended illness. He was 89.

Mr. Caswell was born Sept. 22, 1912, in Sharon, a son of the late H. Guy and Florence M. Rankin Caswell.

Mr. Caswell graduated from Sharpsville High School in 1931 and was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Army Air Corps.

He was retired from Damascus Tube Co. in Reynolds.

Survivors include: his wife, Jean Woods Caswell, whom he married July 24, 1942; two daughters, Sue Ann Caswell, Easton, Pa.; and Jane Chase, Lawrenceburg, Ind.; a brother, Walter, Florida; and two granddaughters.

Mr. Caswell was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters and two brothers.

Harry L. Rabold Sr.

Sharon Steel retiree was Pepsi driver, active in church

Harry L. Rabold Sr., 2480 Spencer Road, Hermitage, died at 3:18 a.m. Saturday (3-9-02) in the skilled care unit of the hospital of Sharon Regional Health System. He was 74.

He was born July 5, 1927, in Mercer to John and Mabel Ruth Phillips Rabold Sr.

Mr. Rabold attended the former Bowman School, a one-room school house in Coolspring Township.

Before retiring in May 1990, he was employed as a coiler operator in the 60-inch hot mill of Sharon Steel Corp.'s former Farrell plant, where he worked for 43 years. He also drove truck for the Pepsi Co. for more than 25 years. Earlier in his life, he worked with his father at Rabold's, the family service station on U.S. Route 19, Mercer.

Mr. Rabold was an active member of Unity Presbyterian Church, Greenfield, for 49 years.

He enjoyed deer hunting for many years and was an avid race car fan, attending many races at Mercer Raceway.

Surviving are: his wife at home, Eva Mary Snyder Rabold, whom he married Aug. 5, 1953, in Unity Presbyterian Church, Greenfield; two sons, Harry L. "Chip" Rabold Jr. and his wife, Lori, West Middlesex; and Kevin E. Rabold and his wife, Cheryl, Hermitage; four sisters, Mrs. Gilbert (Mildred) DeSota, Canfield, Ohio; Pauline Mason, Masury; Mrs. Nicholas (Esther) Habarka Sr., Shenango Township; and Nancy Weilacker, Lackawannock Township; two brothers, John Rabold and his wife Loretta Jean, Shenango Township; and David W. Rabold and his wife Pamela Joyce, Farrell; one half brother, Norman Rabold, Haines City, Fla.; and two grandchildren, Nathan and Morgan Rabold, whom he loved dearly.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Former Masury homemaker belonged to Sacred Heart

Anne Frances Godowitch Rust, 3090 Five Points Road, Hartford, formerly of 1349 Sharon Hogue Road, Masury, died at 6:50 a.m. today, March 11, 2002, in Meadowbrook Manor of Hartford from natural causes. She was 82.

Mrs. Rust was born Nov. 10, 1919, in Sharon to Michael and Pauline Godowitch.

A 1937 graduate of Hickory High School in Hermitage, Mrs. Rust worked on her family's dairy farm in Masury.

Mrs. Rust was a homemaker and a member of the First Catholic Slovak Ladies Association in Farrell.

Mrs. Rust was a member of Church of the Sacred Heart, Sharon.

Surviving are: a daughter and son-in-law, Shirley Marcus, wife of Terry, Coral Springs, Fla.; three sons, Leonard Rust, Clarence Rust and Howard Rust, all Masury; and four grandchildren.

She was preceded in death Nov. 2, 1981, by her husband, Orlo Rust, whom she married Aug. 29, 1942; a sister, Mary Waclaski; and two brothers, Tony Godowitch and Steve Godowitch.

Stanley A. 'Jake' Winklevoss

Auto auction partner, officer had Jackson Center garage

Stanley A. "Jake" Winklevoss, 1288 Franklin Road, Jackson Center, died at 10:45 a.m. Sunday, March 10, 2002, in Trinity Living Center, Grove City, after a lengthy illness. He was 89.

Mr. Winklevoss was born March 3, 1913, in Jackson Center to Henry Winklevoss and Laura Day Winklevoss.

He was a partner and a president for 10 years of Interstate Auto Auction in Jackson Township. Mr. Winklevoss was previously owner/operator for 35 years of Keystone Garage in Jackson Center.

As a member of Jackson Center Presbyterian Church, he served as an elder.

His wife, the former Annette Sagulla, whom he married Jan. 17, 1942, died Jan. 7, 1996.

Surviving are: four sisters, Pearl Szesko, Stoneboro; Mabel Counselman, Jonesboro, Tenn.; Helen, wife of Robert Filer, Grove City; and Esther, wife of Donald Rudolph, Ripon, Calif.; two brothers, Carl Winklevoss and his wife Betty, Jackson Center; and Don Winklevoss and his wife Faye, Mercer.

Besides his wife, Mr. Winklevoss was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Howard, Paul, Alfred and Ted Winklevoss; and one sister, Hazel Poppleton.

Fannie Bostocky

Ex-Farrell woman helped run restaurants, supply business

Fannie Bostocky, 4071 Glenwood Ave., Youngstown, formerly of Park Avenue, Farrell, died at 4 a.m. Sunday, March 10, 2002, in Heritage Manor, Youngstown. She was 92.

Mrs. Bostocky was born Aug. 27, 1909, in McKeesport, a daughter of Noah and Dora Prizant Zoldan.

She attended Farrell area schools and was a member of Temple Beth Israel, Sharon; and Temple Ohev Tzedek, Youngstown. Mrs. Bostocky was a member of the Sisterhood of Temple Ohev Tzedek and a life member of Hadassah. She was also a member of the former B'nai Zion Temple of Farrell and a member of the Pioneer Women.

A lifelong resident of the area, Mrs. Bostocky married her husband, Simon "Si" Bostocky, in 1934. The couple operated restaurants and a restaurant supply business in Sharon and Farrell until Si's death in 1964.

After her husband's death, she moved to Youngstown and began a career with Lazar Markets until her retirement.

Surviving are: her son and daughter-in-law, Jerry Bostocky and his wife Susan, Canfield, Ohio; a brother, Sam Zoldon, Boardman, Ohio; two sisters, Lillian Brodie and Sylvia Polonsky, both Los Angeles; and two grandsons, Jason Bostocky, Columbiana, Ohio, and Jonathan Bostocky, Atlanta.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Edward Bostocky; a sister, Cecil Lazar; and four brothers, Harry, Leo, Morris and Jack Zoldan.

Donations may be made to Heritage Manor, 517 Gypsy Lane, Youngstown 44504; or to a charity of the donor's choice in Mrs. Bostocky's memory.

Richard Dean McCurry

Richard Dean McCurry, 514 12th St., Pymatuning Township, died at 6:36 a.m. Thursday, March 7, 2002, in UPMC Horizon, Greenville. He was three months old.

Richard was born Dec. 5, 2001, to Debbie J. McCurry.

Surviving besides his mother are: his maternal grandparents, Glenn and Norma McCurry, and one brother, Cory A. Anderson, Transfer.
