Jerry Ray Bartley
Reznor retiree was member of Bethany Presbyterian

A funeral service will be held Thursday for Jerry Ray Bartley, 541 Grant St., Mercer. He died at 1:10 p.m. Sunday, March 31, 2002, in United Community Hospital, Pine Township, after an extended illness. He was 62.

Mr. Bartley was born Feb. 9, 1940, in West Monterey, Clarion County, to Arthur Bartley and Mamie Clark Bartley.

He retired in 2000 after 40 years of service at Reznor -- a unit of Thomas & Betts, Mercer.

Mr. Bartley was a member of Bethany Presbyterian Church in Mercer.

Surviving are: his wife, the former Connie Jean Hodge, whom he married June 29, 1962, at the residence; two sons, Jerry R. Bartley Jr.; and Robert Bartley and his wife Beth, all Mercer; three sisters, Ellen Galena, Emlenton, Venango County; Kate, wife of Terry Kinney, Parker, Clarion County; and Sara, wife of Rod Hopper, Foxburg, Clarion County; five brothers, David Bartley, Kaylor, Clarion County; and Larry, Donald, Thomas and James Bartley, all Parker; a granddaughter, Madison Bartley; and a grandson, Jacob Bartley.

Mr. Bartley was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Carol Ann Bartley; and a brother, Edward Bartley.

Charles E. Bible

Retired Sharon Steel officer, consultant served in church

Charles E. Bible of 734 state Route 7 NE, Brookfield, died at 4:40 p.m. Saturday (3-30-01) in the hospital of Sharon Regional Health System following a stroke. He was 75.

Mr. Bible was born July 18, 1926, in Cleveland, a son of Maxwell and Zula Webb Bible.

He was a 1944 graduate of Brookfield High School and had attended the Shenango campus of Pennsylvania State University in Sharon; and Westminster College in New Wilmington.

Mr. Bible retired in 1985 as superintendent from the former Sharon Steel Corp.'s Farrell plant, where he had worked for 42 years. In 1985, he became a consultant in the steel industry, working for various businesses in the United States and Mexico. Mr. Bible had also written articles relating to the steel industry published in Iron & Steel Engineer Magazine, 33 Magazine, Iron Age Magazine and Metal Working Magazine.

He was a member of the United Methodist Church for more than 62 years, serving in many areas including lay speaker. He was currently a member of Churchill United Methodist Church in Liberty Township, Trumbull County.

Mr. Bible was also a past master of Free and Accepted Masons Jerusalem Lodge 19; and a past patron of Order of the Eastern Star Chapter 518, both Hartford.

His hobbies included hunting, fishing, boating and gardening.

Mr. Bible is survived by: his wife, the former Glenna Goodwin, whom he married July 19, 1947, at home.

He is also survived by: a daughter, Mrs. B. James (Janie) Benton, Clarksburg, Md.; a son, Charles "Chip" Bible, and his wife Mary Earnhart Bible, Brookfield; two sisters, Mary Ann Evans, Hubbard; and Ruth Jennings, Brookfield; two brothers, the Rev. Donald Bible, Pickerington, Ohio; and Robert Bible, Gatlinburg, Tenn.; and five beloved grandchildren, Allison and Bryann Benton; and Matthew, Thomas and Katie Bible.

Mr. Bible was preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers, Maxwell Bible Jr. and James Bible.

L. Richard Canada

Retiree was ex-Youngstown grocer, member of Oak Tree

L. Richard Canada, 83, of Hermitage, formerly of Fifth Avenue, Youngstown, died Sunday afternoon (3-31-02) at his residence.

Mr. Canada was born July 31, 1918, in Boardman, Ohio, a son of Louis L. and Marguerite Lindgren Canada.

He graduated from Boardman High School, where he excelled athletically by being the first athlete to earn four letters in each of his four years. He attended the University of Michigan.

He served four years in the Army during World War II as a master sergeant. He owned an Isaly's in Youngstown for four years prior to going to the Army.

He owned and operated a United Super Market for 21 years in Youngstown, during which time he held the positions of vice president and president of the Youngstown Grocers Association. He was chairman of the United Super Markets for 14 years.

He retired from Tamarkin Co. in Youngstown in 1984 after 20 years. During that time he worked in public relations, advertising, merchandising and finally real estate and store development.

He was a longtime member of Oak Tree Country Club, Shenango Township, and was an avid golfer.

Besides his wife, the former Marguerite A. Rosenberger, whom he married Nov. 2, 1946, he leaves five sons, Arthur Louis, Naples, Fla.; Richard Alan, Chicago; Garrett Weaver, Naples; Timothy John, Hubbard; and Jeffrey Bruce, San Diego; a daughter, Marguerite Ann Grober, Hermitage; and 10 grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Jack L. Canada; and a sister, Dorothy Kralick.

Anthony William Frank

Sacred Heart member was Sharon Steel crane operator

INDIANA, Pa. -- Anthony William Frank of Beacon Ridge Nursing Home in Indiana, formerly of Sharon, passed away peacefully March 30, 2002, in the home. He was 96.

Mr. Frank was born May 22, 1905, in Sharon, a son of John B. and Mary Merola Frank.

He lived his entire life in Sharon and worked as a crane operator for the former Sharon Steel Corp. for 47 years.

He was a member of Church of the Sacred Heart, Sharon.

Mr. Frank was a member of Knights of Columbus Sharon Council 684 and United Steel Workers of America. He was an avid sports enthusiast and he also had belonged to a seniors bowling league in Sharon.

His wife, the former Cecelia Frances O'Toole, whom he married Jan. 14, 1931, passed away April 12, 1991.

He is survived by his son, Dr. John E. Frank and his wife, Jeannette, Indiana; a brother-in-law, James L. O'Toole and his wife, Jean, Kensington, Md.; two grandchildren, Janelle Reinoso and her husband, Juan, Houston; and Jeffrey Frank and his wife, Courtney, Wyandotte, Mich.; one great-granddaughter, Sophia Reinoso; and a number of nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; two brothers, Dominic and Benjamin Frank; and one sister, Mary Stankovich.

Cecilia M. Gilliland

Sharon homemaker belonged to St. Joe's Church

Cecilia M. Gilliland, 967 Bechtol Ave., Sharon, passed away at 9 a.m. Monday, April 1, 2002, in UPMC Shadyside, Pittsburgh, following a brief illness. She was 79.

Mrs. Gilliland was born Feb. 4, 1923, in Niles, Ohio, to her parents, Joseph and Helen.

She was a graduate of Sacred Heart School in Sharon and attended Sharon High School.

A homemaker, Mrs. Gilliland was a member of St. Joseph's Church in Sharon and the Slovak Catholic Sokol Lodge.

She enjoyed cooking and was an avid card, bingo and euchre player.

Her husband died in 1980.

Surviving are: two daughters, Donna M. and her husband Larry Ayers, Masury; and Debra A. and her husband Ronald Radford, Sharon; one sister, Emily Price, Brookfield; one brother, Frank Chavara and his wife Shirley, Greensburg, Pa.; and one grandson, Joseph Radford, Sharon.

Besides her husband, Mrs. Gilliland was preceded in death by one brother, William; and a sister, Anne Patterson.

LaRue T. Melick

Retired ag inspector served in Lutheran church in GC

LaRue T. Melick, 426 Memorial Ave., Grove City, died at 12:35 p.m. Monday, April 1, 2002, following a one-week illness, in Trinity Living Center, Grove City, where he was a resident since June 2001. He was 93.

Mr. Melick was born Oct. 6, 1908, in Columbia County to Charles Melick and Carrie Ellen Bogart Melick.

A graduate of Pennsylvania State University Class of 1939, he retired in 1975 from Stratton Laboratory, where he was an agriculture inspector for more than 30 years.

As a past very active member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Grove City, Mr. Melick served as a former secretary, treasurer and member of the church council. He also belonged to Free and Accepted Masons Lodge 603, Grove City.

His wife, the former Audrey G. Grace, whom he married July 30, 1938, died March 29, 1987.

Surviving are: two daughters, Sandra Melick, Fredericksburg, Va.; and Gayle Rippe, San Carlos, Calif.; one sister, Mrs. Oliver (Leona) Kile, Columbia County; one cousin who was reared as a sister, Lillian Gross, Bloomsburg, Pa.; and two grandchildren.

Besides his wife, Mr. Melick was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Daisy Melick and Edna Seifert; and one brother, Arthur Melick.

Mattie 'Granny' Peterson

Retired caregiver belonged to Second Baptist in Farrell

A funeral service will be held Thursday for Mattie Peterson, also called "Granny," of 941 Sharon-New Castle Road, Farrell. She died at 4:15 a.m. Saturday (3-30-02) in the hospital of Sharon Regional Health System. She was 81.

Mrs. Peterson was born March 15, 1921, in Morgantown, W.Va., a daughter of Thomas and Mazie Seals Harris, coming to the area 48 years ago.

She was employed as a caregiver for Flo's Leisure Living Center in Youngstown, retiring in 1993.

Mrs. Peterson was a member of Second Baptist Church in Farrell and a former member of its Nurse's Guild.

She was also a member of the Blue Moon Club in the Shenango Valley.

Her husband, Percy L. Peterson, whom she married in 1947, died in 1972.

She leaves: three sons, Robert Peterson and his wife Lavern, Farrell; Jack L. Peterson and his wife Theresa, Pittsburgh; and Nathaniel Dillard, Morgantown; four daughters, Shirley Banks Townsend, Wilkinsburg; Delores Peterson, Sharon; Frankie Crossland, Mingo Junction, Ohio; and Judy Allen, Youngstown; two sisters, Betty Jean Dillard, Morgantown; and Eunice Cole Johnson, Osage, W.Va.; 27 grandchildren; 52 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.

Besides her husband, Mrs. Peterson was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Richard J. Peterson; a granddaughter, Tonya Wilson; and two sisters, Evelyn Jefferson and Norma Jefferson.

Elizabeth Taylor

Farrell homemaker was born in South Carolina

Elizabeth Taylor, 103 Emerson Ave., Farrell, died at 7:45 a.m. Monday (4-1-02) in UPMC Horizon, Farrell.

Mrs. Taylor was born in Andersonville, S.C.

A homemaker, she enjoyed knitting, crocheting, working crossword puzzles and collecting cookbooks.

Her husband, James Taylor, is deceased.

Surviving are: a daughter, Joyce Taylor, at home; one grandson, Allen Taylor and his wife Leslie, Farrell; and two cousins, Ellen Johnson, Hermitage; and Jerry Taylor, Arizona.

Besides her husband, Mrs. Taylor was preceded in death by her parents; four daughters, Mary Tolliver, Delores McClendon, Jovon A. Taylor and Joan Taylor; a brother, John Henry Harthorn; a half sister, Ossie Mae Hamm; and a granddaughter, Yvonne Smith.

John Toth

Brookfield U.M. member was WE retiree, singer-guitarist

John Toth of 438 Golf Drive, Brookfield, died at 3:30 a.m. Monday (4-1-02) in Liberty (Township) Health Care Center, Trumbull County. He was 82.

Mr. Toth was born Jan. 9, 1920, in Crabtree, Pa., a son of John and Mary Horvath Toth.

He retired in 1982 as a machinist from the former Sharon Transformer Division of Westinghouse Electric Corp., where he had been employed for 35 years.

Mr. Toth was a member of Brookfield United Methodist Church.

He also played guitar and harmonica and sang in area nursing homes and for other events for many years.

Mr. Toth enjoyed painting flowers, birds and outdoor scenes.

His other interests included gardening and woodworking.

His wife, the former Kathleen L. Bezik, whom he married May 9, 1942, died Nov. 13, 1994.

Mr. Toth is survived by: two sons, Rodney Toth, Hubbard; and Dennis Toth, Brookfield; a sister, Margaret Bayus, Erie; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Besides his wife, Mr. Toth was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Frank Toth; and a sister, Elizabeth Toth.
