Olive Neiman Sharon woman was past president of fire unit auxiliary Olive Neiman, Clepper Manor, formerly of Hall Avenue, both Sharon, died at 3:55 a.m. Monday, April 8, 2002, in the hospital of Sharon Regional Health System. She was 94. Mrs. Neiman was born Nov. 25, 1907, in Farrell to Wilbur Smiley and Nancy Graham Smiley. She was a charter member and a past president of North Sharon Fire Department Auxiliary. Mrs. Neiman enjoyed bowling, playing cards and bingo. Her husband, Henry Neiman, whom she married Oct. 14, 1929, died Jan. 14, 1960. Surviving are: one daughter, Mrs. Donald (Phyllis) Burger, Hermitage; one son, Merle Neiman, Greenville; 10 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren. Besides her husband, Mrs. Neiman was preceded in death by one son, Kenneth Neiman; seven sisters; and four brothers.
NEIMAN Gary N. Spohn '64 Hickory grad was city streets foreman, dog breeder A funeral service will be held Saturday for Gary N. Spohn, 2805 Spencer Road, Hermitage. He died at 6:15 p.m. Sunday, April 7, 2002, in UPMC Horizon, Farrell, after an extended illness. He was 56. Mr. Spohn was born Oct. 3, 1945, in Sharon to Joseph Spohn Sr. and Verna Bennett Spohn. He graduated in 1964 from Hickory High School in Hermitage and worked for the City of Hermitage street department as a foreman for 36 years. Mr. Spohn retired in 2001. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and carpentry. Mr. Spohn also bred Red Bone and Blue Tick hounds. Surviving are: his former wives, Sandra Buchanan Allison of Transfer, mother of the late Gerald W. Spohn; and Feddra Aleska Spohn of Hermitage, mother of his son, Nicholas W. Spohn; and his daughter, Nittany Marie Spohn, both Hermitage; five sisters, Gail Spohn, Warren, Ohio; Yvonne Wagner, Hermitage; Karen Reighert, Harrisville; and twins, Kay Shealy, Sharon; and Mrs. Byron (Kim) McGhee, Kinsman; a brother, Joseph Spohn Jr., Youngstown; a foster son, Jeffrey Campbell Sr. and his wife Brenda Campbell, Sharon; two granddaughters, whom he raised, Jennifer Lynn Spohn and Malinda Sue Spohn, both at home; and his foster grandchildren, Jeffrey Campbell Jr., and Rose, Andrew and Monica Campbell, all Sharon. Besides his son, Gerald, Mr. Spohn was preceded in death by his parents.
SPOHN Maureen Fierst Retired nurse born in Ireland served in U.S. Army in WWII COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Maureen Fierst of 3550 Fishinger Blvd., Columbus, formerly of Brookfield, died at 10 p.m. Sunday (4-7-02) in Traditions at Millrun. She was 86. Mrs. Fierst was born Aug. 3, 1915, in Kilrush County Clare, Ireland, a daughter of Timothy and Bridget McCarthy O'Donovan. She had lived in Brookfield for more than 37 years. After serving our country as a lieutenant in the U.S. Army during World War II, she retired as a registered nurse with Nugent Convalescent Home in Hermitage. Surviving are: her husband, John P. Fierst, whom she married 56 years ago; three sons, John T. Fierst, Lansing, Mich.; Michael C. Fierst, Columbus; and Thomas J. Fierst, St. Paul, Minn.; two daughters, Sue Kostur, Melrose, Mass.; and Lisa Turco, Springfield, Va.; one brother, James O'Donovan, Boston; and 10 grandchildren. Mrs. Fierst was preceded in death by her parents; a daughter, Maura Fierst; and three brothers, John, Patrick and Timothy O'Donovan.
FIERST Elizabeth 'Betty' Ezzo Lozier South Py homemaker formerly worked for doctor Elizabeth "Betty" Ezzo Lozier of 5157 Tamarack Drive in South Pymatuning Township, passed away peacefully at 7 a.m. Monday (4-8-02) in UPMC Horizon, Farrell, following an extended illness. She was 66. Mrs. Lozier was born Dec. 18, 1935, in New Castle, a daughter of Tony and Rose Matteo Ezzo. She was a 1954 alumna of New Castle High School. A homemaker, Mrs. Lozier was previously employed by Dr. Michael E. Drespling in his Hermitage office. Betty enjoyed playing Euchre, loved bingo and was an exceptional cook, especially at gatherings of family and friends. Her husband, Raymond E. Lozier, whom she married Jan. 31, 1959, survives her at home. She also leaves: four daughters, Mavis E. Lozier, Sharpsville; and Megan E. Ayers and her husband Michael R.; Lori E. Lozier; and Gillian E. Currin and her husband V. Lane, all Atlanta. Betty is survived by four grandchildren, Meia E. Lozier; Riley E. and Julienne R. Ayers; and Talya V. Currin. Also surviving are: three sisters, Margaret "Peggy" Cioppa and her husband, Michael; Carol Bethle and her husband George; and Janet Pratt and her husband John, all New Castle. Mrs. Lozier was preceded in death by her parents.
LOZIER Lloyd L. Hoffman Venango County native was retiree of ex-Cooper plant Lloyd L. Hoffman of Trinity Living Center, Grove City, died at 12:40 a.m. Monday, April 8, 2002, in United Community Hospital, Pine Township, after a long-term illness. He was 83. Born Sept. 16, 1918, in Wesley, Venango County, Mr. Hoffman was one of 13 children born to the late Harry Nolton Hoffman and Clara Belle Morrison Hoffman. He had been a longtime employee of the former Cooper Bessemer in Grove City, retiring after 40 years service. Mr. Hoffman spent most of his life in the Venango and Mercer county areas and attended Wesley schools. His youth was spent on his father's farm in Wesley during the Great Depression, where he on occasion helped his brothers to work in shallow coal mining. In his early preoccupation, he served in the Civilian Conservation Corps in North Carolina, initiated during the depression years by President Franklin D. Roosevelt. He started his occupation in the 1930s when he worked for an Oil City newspaper owner as gardener, by attending to the owner's landscaped home in Hassen Heights. During the World War II years, not being medically qualified to serve in any of the military branches, he moved to Mercer County and started working for what is now Cooper Energy Services Reciprocating Products in Grove City, becoming a highly skilled machinist. He worked on large crankshafts for landing sea craft as part of the many military contracts during that period. He took medical leave and eventually retired in 1980. He was of the Methodist faith. Mr. Hoffman was married for 63 years to the former Elizabeth "Lizzie" R. Ferringer of the Clapp Farm area in Oil City. She survives him in Grove City. Also surviving him are: his children, Nancy L. Hoffman-Montgomery, wife of James, Ravenna, Ohio; Paul Hoffman, Sharon; and Jack Hoffman, North Hollywood, Calif. Seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren also survive him. Besides his parents, his son, Raymond L. Hoffman; and a grandson, Gary Montgomery, predeceased him. Mr. Hoffman was also the last surviving sibling of 13 children, eight sisters and four brothers. HOFFMAN Ruth Naomi McDowell Ruth Naomi McDowell, White-Cliff Nursing Home, Hempfield Township, formerly of Sharpsville, died at 5:34 p.m. Monday (4-8-02) in UPMC Horizon, Greenville. She was 80. Obituary information was incomplete.
