Mary Jane Ludwig New Brighton woman was cook at former Sharon cafe BEAVER -- Mary Jane Ludwig, a resident of New Brighton for 16 years, formerly of Sharon, died at 12:55 p.m. Monday, April 8, 2002, in Medical Center of Beaver. She was 79. Born Feb. 8, 1923 in New Brighton, Mary Jane was a daughter of Walter J. and Margaret Sophronia Holmes Beaner. She was formerly employed as a cook at the former Dillion's Cafe in Sharon. Mary Jane is survived by: four daughters and two sons-in-law, Janet Crook, Atlanta; Judy Ludwig, Fort Myers, Fla.; Peg and Joe Domascieno, Hubbard; and Stephanie and Nasseem Ahmad, Newark, Ohio; a son and daughter-in-law, Rick and Donna Ludwig, Columbia, Mo.; and 12 grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; her companion of 40 years, Stephen "Steve" Ferencik; a son, Carl Ludwig Jr., who died in 1964; and a brother, Richard Ludwig.
LUDWIG Harold D. Pryde Harold D. Pryde, 495 Clarksville Road, Hermitage, died at 10:22 a.m. Tuesday (4-9-02) in the hospital of Sharon Regional Health System. He was 89. Obituary information was incomplete.
PRYDE Virginia M. Carroll Retired hospital cook was Grace U.M. church member Virginia M. Carroll, 107 North St., Grove City, died at 4:14 a.m. Tuesday, April 9, 2002, in United Community Hospital, Pine Township, after an extended illness. She was 79. Mrs. Carroll was born Sept. 30, 1922, in Sandy Lake to Harry Mitchell and Gladys Perrine Mitchell. She retired in 1991 from United Community Hospital, where she was a cook in the dietary department for 29 years. Mrs. Carroll was a member of Grace United Methodist Church in Grove City. She was an avid bowler. Surviving are: her husband, Charles F. Carroll, whom she married Feb. 23, 1949, at home; two daughters, Jill L. Carroll, Grove City; and Mrs. Budd (Christine) Teare, Marion, Ind.; a daughter-in-law, Sue Carroll, Grove City; two brothers, Maurice Mitchell, San Diego; and Paul Mitchell, Pittsburgh; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Mrs. Carroll was preceded in death by her parents; and one son, Gary V. Carroll. CARROLL Anna Mary Hughes Coulter Anna Mary Hughes Coulter, 1325 Sandy Lake Road, Wolf Creek Township, died unexpectedly at 9:38 p.m. Tuesday (4-9-02) in the emergency room of United Community Hospital, Pine Township. She was 73. Obituary information was incomplete.
COULTER Ethel D. Kaufman St. John Lutheran member, homemaker served in PTAs Ethel D. Kaufman, White-Cliff Nursing Home, formerly of 20 Woodbine Drive, both Hempfield Township, died at 9:01 a.m. Tuesday (4-9-02) in UPMC Horizon, Greenville. She was 84. Mrs. Kaufman was born Jan. 7, 1918, in Wyconia, Minn., to William E. Putnam and Dora Gilson Putnam. A graduate of Gothenburg (Neb.) High School and Kearney (Neb.) Teachers College, she was employed as an elementary school teacher in the Gothenburg School District from 1935-40. As a member of St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Delaware Township, Mrs. Kaufman was a past member of Lutheran Church Women; and belonged to the senior citizens group at the church. She was a past member of the Clark Volunteer Fire Department Auxiliary and the Delaware Civic League. Mrs. Kaufman had been involved with and held many offices with the Fredonia Parent Teacher Association and also belonged to the Reynolds PTA. She was a homemaker. Her husband, Harold L. Kaufman, whom she married June 30, 1940, died Dec. 19, 1998. Surviving are: one daughter, Mrs. Robert (Sandra) Dunham, Transfer; two sons, William I. Kaufman, Greenville; and Richard L. Kaufman, Goodlettsville, Tenn.; three sisters, Phyllis Lange, Seattle.; Darlene Kenney, Escondido, Calif.; and Carol Seymore, Dallas; one brother, Robert Putnam, Escondido; three grandchildren, Jason Kaufman, Jarrod Kaufman and Bradley Dunham; and one great-grandson, Nathan Dunham. Besides her husband, Mrs. Kaufman was preceded in death by her parents; and one brother, Reginald Putnam. KAUFMAN Margaret 'Peg' Billioni St. John's Episcopal member was bowling hall of famer Margaret "Peg" Billioni of 99 Todd Ave., Hermitage, died at 5:40 a.m. Tuesday (4-9-02) in the hospital of Sharon Regional Health System. She was 77. Mrs. Billioni was born March 27, 1925, in Arcadia, Pa., a daughter of Andrew and Victoria Buchanin Solyan. A 1943 graduate of Sharon High School, she was an active member of St. John's Episcopal Church in Sharon, where she formerly taught Sunday school. Mrs. Billioni was also a member of the Steering Committee for the Episcopal Church Women; the sewing and crafts group; and Tuesday Night Supper Club; and was a volunteer for the Episcopal Community Service Food Pantry; and a co-chairman of the church Kitchen Committee. She belonged to the Auxiliary to Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6404 in Sharpsville, and assisted with their catering. Mrs. Billioni also worked at The Rosemont banquet and conference center in Sharon. She was a charter member of Shenango Valley Bowling Association and served on its board. She and her late husband, Carl Billioni, were inducted into Mercer County Bowling Hall of Fame in 1994 and served on the Hall of Fame board. Her husband, Carl, whom she married Nov. 3, 1945, died Nov. 22, 1980. Surviving are: a son, Richard K. Billioni and his wife Donna, Sharon; and grandsons, Samuel R. and Michael D. Billioni, both Sharon; two brothers, Paul Solyan and his wife Dorothy, Pittsburgh; and Nicholas Solyan and his wife Rosetta, Hermitage; and a sister, Mrs. Vernon (Susan) Hahn, Plano, Texas. Mrs. Billioni was preceded in death by three sisters, Ann Danchek, Mary Molovich and Julie Helen Shaffer; and six brothers, Andrew Solyan Jr.; and Michael, Charles, George, Joseph and John Solyan. Memorial contributions may be made to the Memorial Fund of St. John's Episcopal Church, 226 W. State St., Sharon 16146.
BILLIONI Gary N. Spohn Obituary was published 4-9-02 Among survivors is a former wife, Feddra Aleksa Spohn of Hermitage. An incorrect spelling of her maiden name was given to the funeral director.
SPOHN Ruth Naomi McDowell Ex-Sharpsville resident, bingo player was ice skates dealer A funeral service will be held Friday for Ruth Naomi McDowell, White-Cliff Nursing Home, Hempfield Township, formerly of Sharpsville. She died of natural causes at 5:34 p.m. Monday, April 8, 2002, in UPMC Horizon, Greenville. She was 80. Mrs. McDowell was born June 28, 1921, in Greenville to Fred Russell and Wadie Camp Russell. A homemaker, she was of the Protestant faith. Mrs. McDowell was an avid bingo player, and bought, sold and traded ice skates locally for 40 years. She loved her grandchildren and spending time with them. Her husband, Richard McDowell, whom she married June 26, 1940, died Aug. 14, 1962. Surviving are: one daughter, Barbara L. Lambert, Sharpsville; two sons, Richard R. McDowell, Sharon; and Charles McDowell, Transfer; one sister, Betty Anderson, Sharon; 10 grandchildren, Sharon Campbell, Karen Catrona, Carl Lambert, Kim Welsh, Sheila Moore, Chari Lynn Kilroy, Darla Matvey, Rick McDowell, Bruce Robinson and Andy Robinson; and 21 great-grandchildren. Besides her husband, Mrs. McDowell was preceded in death by her parents; one sister, Gladys Holler; and one brother, Bill Russell.
