Becky A. Kather '56 Fredonia grad, hospital volunteer was homemaker Becky A. Kather of 48 Fredonia Road, Hempfield Township, died at 12:50 p.m. Tuesday, April 23, 2002, in the hospital of Sharon Regional Health System. She was 63. Mrs. Kather was born Jan. 30, 1939, in Greenville, a daughter of the late Wilbert C. and Isabelle T. Pearce Crocker. She was subsequently raised by her father and stepmother, Nora Hamilton Crocker, following the death of her mother. On Nov. 26, 1964, she married Gene B. Kather, who survives. Mrs. Kather was a 1956 graduate of the former Fredonia High School. She was a homemaker and had formerly been employed from 1956 through 1966 by Chicago Bridge and Iron Co.'s former Hempfield Township plant. Mrs. Kather had attended Zion's Reformed United Church of Christ in Greenville and was a volunteer with the former Greenville Regional Hospital. In addition to her husband, she is survived by: a daughter, Jean Anne Hendricks and her husband Robert, Little Valley, N.Y.; a son, Shawn C. Kather and his wife Michelle, Huntingdon, Pa.; two brothers, Edward P. Crocker and his wife Darlene, Bohannon, Va.; and Wilbert Jack Crocker and his wife Sharon, Mineral Ridge, Ohio; and one grandson, Ayden Hendricks, Little Valley. Mrs. Kather was preceded in death by her parents and her stepmother.
KATHER Erma June 'Tim' Jones WM Presbyterian member was retired school teacher Erma June "Tim" Jones, Sharon, formerly of West Middlesex, died at 4:05 a.m. Tuesday, April 23, 2002, in Cordia Commons of Shenango Inn, Sharon, after a short illness. She was 99. Mrs. Jones was born June 23, 1903, in New Castle to Emory Perrine and Martha Painter Perrine. An alumna of Mercer High School and what was then Edinboro Normal School, she retired in June 1967 after 14 years as an elementary school teacher in West Middlesex School District. Mrs. Jones was previously employed for 10 years by Hickory Township and Mahoningtown schools, both Lawrence County. She was a member of West Middlesex Presbyterian Church; and Order of the Eastern Star Chapter 156 in Farrell. Her husband, Ivor Jones, died Oct. 1, 1952. Surviving are: a daughter, Marian, wife of Terry Smith, Reading, Pa.; a son, John Jones, Indiana, Pa.; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Besides her husband, Mrs. Jones was preceded in death by her parents; and a sister, Twila Noble. Memorial contributions may be made to West Middlesex Presbyterian Church, 3082 W. JONES Edward Spruk Edward Spruk, 155 Fairmont Drive, Hermitage, died at 7:25 p.m. Tuesday (4-24-02) in the hospital of Sharon Regional Health System after becoming ill at home. He was 58. Obituary information was incomplete.
SPRUK Frances Parker Hancock Retired Sharon teacher was active in church, college club GREENSBURG, Pa. -- Frances Parker Hancock, 6 Garden Center Drive, Greensburg, formerly of 483 Dougherty Ave., Sharon, died at 7 a.m. Tuesday, April 23, 2002, in Redstone Highlands Center. She was 91. Mrs. Hancock was born Nov. 12, 1910, in Jackson Center to Daniel Webb Parker and Laura Isabell Taylor Parker. A 1928 alumna of the former Stoneboro High School, she graduated in 1932 from Westminster College in New Wilmington and attended advanced studies at Pennsylvania State University. She retired in 1973 from Sharon School District, where she taught English at the junior and senior high schools. As an active member of Oakland Avenue United Methodist Church in Sharon, she was a past president of United Methodist Women. She was also a 50-year member of Sharon College Club. Her husband, Joseph Hancock, whom she married Oct. 30, 1937, died Nov. 8, 1994. Surviving are: a daughter, Joan Zeiders and her husband Robert, Greensburg; a son, Dr. Joseph Daniel Hancock and his wife Jan Morris Hancock, Martinsburg, W.Va.; four grandchildren, Laura Zeiders Henry and her husband Bruce, Memphis, Tenn.; Benjamin Robert Zeiders, Philadelphia; and Joshua Ross Hancock and his wife Kathy; and Jessica Erin Hancock, both Martinsburg; and two great-grandchildren, Parker Ray Henry and Katey Jo Henry, both Memphis. Besides her husband, Mrs. Hancock was preceded in death by her parents; and two brothers, Earl and Glenn Parker.
HANCOCK Donald L. Shawley Donald L. Shawley, 418 Shenango St., Sharpsville, died at 7:58 a.m. today (4-24-02) in the intensive care unit of UPMC Horizon, Farrell. He was 63. Obituary information was incomplete.
SHAWLEY Howard A. Spangler Jr. Shenango Twp. man, Navy vet was Sharon Steel retiree Howard A. Spangler Jr., 184 Bedford Road, Shenango Township, died at 3:54 a.m. Tuesday, April 23, 2002, in his residence after a brief illness. He was 72. Mr. Spangler was born Dec. 17, 1929, in Bethel, Pa., to Howard A. Spangler Sr. and Pearl F. Campman Spangler. He retired Feb. 29, 1992, after 40 years of service from the former Sharon Steel Corp.'s Farrell plant, where he was a painter. Mr. Spangler was a member of Local 1197 of United Steelworkers; American Legion Post 432, Wheatland; and was a life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Hickory Post 6166, Hermitage. A U.S. Navy veteran, he served from 1947-51 with the occupying forces in Japan and Korea on the USS Toledo. Surviving are: his wife, the former Virginia Ruth McKain, whom he married March 12, 1954; two daughters, Lynne Marie Stoner and her fiance, Bill Schuller, Hermitage; and Hope Ann Spangler and her companion, Drew Becker, Baltimore; two sons, Howard A. Spangler III and his fiance, Charlene Wetherstein, West Middlesex; and Dale A. Spangler and his wife Patricia, Sharon; three grandchildren, Joseph E. Stoner Jr., Kristi Louise Spangler and Samantha HopeLynne Spangler; five sisters, Edythe Barlow, wife of Gene Kleinderfer; and Charlotte, wife of Ollie Lowery, both Deland, Fla.; Carol Koch and her companion, Bob Leas, Hermitage; Betsy Marlow, Charleston, S.C.; and Sandra Lea Jones, West Middlesex; and three brothers, Norman Camp Spangler Sr.; and Robert Wayne Spangler and his wife Kathy, all Hermitage; and James LeRoy Spangler and his wife Mary Wynn, Thomasville, N.C. Mr. Spangler was preceded in death by his parents; an infant daughter, who died in 1956; a son, Daniel Steven Spangler, who died in 1965; a brother, John W. Spangler; and four sisters, Sarah Hassell Arthur, Donna Jean Black McKee, Loretta Boles and Evelyn Duncan.
SPANGLER Walter G. McFadden Slippery Rock retiree, church member gained war honors Walter G. McFadden, 101 Spruce Drive, Apartment 5, Slippery Rock, formerly of Parker and Harrisville, died at 5:22 a.m. Tuesday, April 23, 2002, in Oakland Veterans Administration Medical Center in Pittsburgh, following an extended illness. He was 78. Mr. McFadden was born June 18, 1923, in Barkeyville to Frank C. McFadden and Mary I. Hileman McFadden. He retired from C and K Coal, Clarion, where he was a heavy equipment operator. He previously worked for Cooper Energy Services Reciprocating Products in Grove City; and Allegheny Mineral Corp., Harrisville. A decorated U.S. Army Air Corps veteran, Mr. McFadden was shot down over Germany and taken captive during World War II. He belonged to many military organizations including Veterans of Foreign Wars; American Legion Post 393, Slippery Rock; Second Air Division Association; and was a life member of American Ex-Prisoners of War; and Disabled American Veterans. Mr. McFadden was a recipient of various commendations including a Purple Heart, Air Medal, European-African-Middle Eastern Medal, Battle of Normandy Medal, Victory Medal of World War II, Prisoner-of-War Medal and Army Good Conduct Medal. He also belonged to Highland Presbyterian Church in Slippery Rock and the Caterpillar Club. Surviving are: his wife, the former Martha V. Kay, whom he married July 15, 1949, at home; four daughters, Joyce, wife of Rickie Barger, Jamestown; Bonnie, wife of Gary Crisman, Rew, Pa.; Connie, wife of William Hagan, Harrisville; and Patricia, wife of Tim Holliday, Grove City; a son, David G. McFadden, husband of Mary Ann, Butler; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews. Mr. McFadden was preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers, Merle and James Lester McFadden.
