Today's obituaries Shirley A. Theiss Hall Volant-area homemaker was a former nurse Shirley A. Theiss Hall, Volant RD 3, died at 9:20 a.m. Sunday, April 28, 2002, in the hospital of Jameson Health System, New Castle. She was 67. Mrs. Hall was born Nov. 27, 1934, in New Castle to Fred M. Theiss and Anne Butia Theiss. Most recently a homemaker, she was previously a practical nurse for 10 years at Shenango Presbyterian Home in New Wilmington. As a Lutheran and member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in New Castle, she belonged to the church Women's Circle. Her husband of 50 years, Robert J. Hall, survives at home in Volant. Also surviving are: three children, Robert J. Hall Jr. and William F. Hall, both New Castle; and Robin A. Kuhn, New Wilmington; and five grandchildren. Mrs. Hall was preceded in death by her parents.
HALL Charles Lary Charles Lary, 1210 Maple Drive, Hermitage, died at 8:05 p.m. Sunday (4-28-02) in his home. He was 79. Obituary information was incomplete.
LARY Mariam L. Reed GC retiree, church member was secretary, stenographer Mariam L. Reed, 635 Craig St., Grove City, died at 3:38 p.m. Sunday, April 28, 2002, in United Community Hospital, Pine Township, after an extended illness. She was 87. Miss Reed was born Sept. 5, 1914, in Grove City to James W. Reed and Eva Blanche Miller Reed. A graduate of Grove City High School and the former Duff's Iron City Business College in Pittsburgh, she retired from Drake Baking Co. in Pittsburgh, where she was a secretary. Miss Reed was formerly employed in the office of Dr. Buvinger, an ear, nose and throat specialist of Pittsburgh, as well as for the Secret Service in Washington, D.C., where she was a stenographer. She was a member of Center Presbyterian Church in Grove City. Surviving are two sisters, Mrs. Dean (Jean L.) Rodgers, Grove City; and Mrs. Gilbert (Helen) Couch, Spring Church, Pa. Miss Reed was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Lyle M. Reed, Howard M. Reed and Donald Reed; and one sister, Eleanor R. Reed.
REED Edwin C. Simon Plasterer, engraver lived in GC, was WWII vet, Mason Services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 1, for lifelong Grove City resident Edwin C. Simon of Stockton Avenue in Grove City. He died Saturday evening, April 27, 2002, in UPMC Presbyterian Hospital, Pittsburgh. He was 76. He was born to Charles and Alta Covert Simon on June 12, 1925, in Grove City. Mr. Simon was a graduate of Grove City High School and served in World War II as a Navy Gunner Mate Third Class on the USS Nassau. He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 519, Grove City; as well as a 33rd degree Mason in Free and Accepted Masons Lodge 603, Grove City; Scottish Rites New Castle Consistory; and Mercer County Shrine Club, Hermitage. He was also a member of Benevolent and Protective Order of the Elks Lodge 1579; American Legion Post 220; and East Main Presbyterian Church, all Grove City. Mr. Simon was married Oct. 24, 1946, to Francis R. Vincent, who died in May 1989. He is survived by his second wife, Marian Winger Simon. He was a self-employed plasterer and memorial engraver. He is also survived by: three sons, Richard J. Simon, Warren, Ohio; William D. Simon, Mercer; and Thomas R. Simon, Grove City; one stepson, Michael Engstrom, Washington state; 17 grandchildren; and one stepdaughter, Tami Brodbeck, Toledo. He was preceded in death by a brother, Robert Simon; and a daughter, Mary Ellen Simon.
SIMON Arsen F. Armond Retired lottery manager was noted Lawrence County Dem Arsen F. Armond, 600 Carnegie Ave., Sharon, formerly of Boyles Avenue, New Castle, died Sunday afternoon, April 28, 2002, in UPMC Horizon, Farrell. He was 87. Mr. Armond was born Oct. 23, 1914, in New Castle to Joseph A. Armond and Mary F. Boyle Armond. He was a graduate of New Castle High School and attended Pennsylvania State University. Mr. Armond retired in July 1981 from Pennsylvania State Revenue Department, Lottery Division, where he was a district lottery manager in Mercer County. He also served as Lawrence County Commissioner from 1951 to 1955. A machinist, supervisor and president of Local 1671 of Machinists Union, Mr. Armond worked for Mesta Machine, New Castle, and was also employed for 11 years as assistant superintendent at Babcock & Wilcox in Beaver Falls. He was a former vice president of International Association of Machinists; and of American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees Union. Mr. Armond was also a past president of Notre Dame Boosters Club and was a life member of Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie 455, both New Castle. He was a former campaign coordinator for the late President Franklin D. Roosevelt. During Mr. Armond's political career, he was known as "Mr. Democrat of Lawrence County." He was a member of St. Joseph's Church, Sharon; and formerly belonged to St. Mary's Church, New Castle. His first wife, the former Mae Doyle, is deceased. Surviving are: his second wife, the former Sandra K. Jones, whom he married Nov. 23, 1983, at home; one daughter, Mrs. Everett (Karen) Taylor, Stafford, Va.; three sons, Joseph Armond, Bartlett, Ill.; Arsen Armond Jr., New Orleans; and James Armond, Georgetown, Del.; 13 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. Besides his first wife, he was preceded in death by his parents; one son, John Charles Armond; one brother, Joseph Armond; and two sisters, Mary Kerr and Ann Cubellis. Howard Bruce Carlson Elder, teacher's aide worked for Flexospan, car dealership Howard Bruce Carlson of 3303 N. Main St., Sandy Lake, died unexpectedly at 8:30 p.m. Saturday (4-27-02) in UPMC Horizon, Greenville. He was 52. Mr. Carlson was born April 27, 1950, in Grove City to Howard W. and Evelyn Fletcher Carlson. He was a 1968 graduate of Lakeview High School and graduated from New Castle School of Business with a degree in accounting. Mr. Carlson had worked for many years at Flexospan of Sandy Lake and at Walker Chevrolet, also Sandy Lake. He volunteered at Oakview Elementary School for eight years as a teacher's aide. Mr. Carlson was a member of Stoneboro Presbyterian Church, where he had served as an elder and treasurer. He was very active in the community for most of his life. He was a member and past secretary of Free and Accepted Masons Lake Lodge 434, Sandy Lake; and was a past member of Stoneboro Lions Club. Mr. Carlson loved people and enjoyed helping others. He also enjoyed coin collecting. He married the former Gweneth J. Howell on Sept. 10, 1983. She survives. Also surviving are: one son, Todd A. Carlson, at home; one stepdaughter, Wendy Semkus, Los Angeles; one sister, Mrs. Emil B. (Beverly) Voorhees, Sandy Lake; and one brother, Dennis W. Carlson and his wife Susan, Stoneboro. CARLSON Stella Del Losso Longtime Sharon pin league secretary had lived in Farrell BINGHAMTON, N.Y. -- Stella Del Losso, Binghamton, formerly of Farrell, went to be with her Lord on Thursday afternoon, April 25, 2002, in Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital. Mrs. Del Losso was born in New Bedford, Mass., a daughter of Anthony Pieleck and Mary Gaylic Pieleck. She was the secretary for 17 years for the largest mixed retired bowling league in the nation, based at Thornton Hall Lanes in Sharon. Mrs. Del Losso was a member of Our Lady of Fatima Church, Farrell, where she was a former member of its Altar/Rosary Society; and belonged to Christ the King Roman Catholic Church, Endwell, N.Y. She was predeceased by her husband, Joseph R. Del Losso, who died in 1980. Mrs. Del Losso is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Dolores and James Wortman, Endwell. "Gram" was the adored grandmother of Mrs. James (Linda) Cerra, Apalachin, N.Y.; Carol Wortman, Sea Bright, N.J.; David Wortman, Boca Raton, Fla.; Brian Wortman, Endicott, N.Y.; Joseph Del Losso, Lake Worth, Fla.; Anthony Del Losso, Farrell; and Michael Del Losso, Hermitage. Survivors also include: four great-grandchildren; and four sisters, Thelma Pieleck, Hermitage; Catherine Catoldi, Crockett, Calif.; Mrs. Ralph (Ethel) Infante, Sharon; Mrs. Ernest (Violet) Gatta, Youngstown; and many nieces and nephews. Besides her husband, Mrs. Del Losso was preceded in death by a son, Joseph A. Del Losso, in 1978; twin daughters, Josephine and Frances Del Losso, in 1935; and a granddaughter, Diane Del Losso, also in 1978. DEL LOSSO Michael 'Mike' V. Tatusko Sr. Sharon Store worker was school maintenance retiree Michael "Mike" V. Tatusko Sr. of 160 S. Crescent Drive, Hermitage, died at 10:45 p.m. Saturday (4-27-02) in the hospital of Sharon Regional Health System. He was 84. Mr. Tatusko was born Feb. 14, 1918, in Seanor, Pa., a son of John and Anna Washic Tatusko. He was a graduate of Farrell High School and a member of Covenant Presbyterian Church in Sharon and its Senior Fellowship. Mr. Tatusko was also a member of Pennsylvania School Retirees Association and the former AARP Shenango Valley Chapter 3775, a retired person's organization. He had been employed as a carpet installer for the former Sharon Store for 25 years and later was maintenance supervisor for West Middlesex School District for 12 years, retiring in 1983. His first wife, the former Mary Campbell, whom he married Aug. 15, 1953, died May 17, 1979. Mr. Tatusko is survived by his second wife, the former Alice Campbell Thomson, whom he married Nov. 1, 1980. Also surviving are: a son, Michael V. Tatusko Jr. and his wife Judy, Natrona Heights, Pa.; seven sisters, Anna Gaydos; Mrs. Andy (Mary) Gaydos; and Mrs. Walter (Kay) Yourema, all Hermitage; Mrs. George (Marge) Ristvey, Edinboro; Mrs. Warren (Helen) Cook, Hubbard; Mrs. Raymond (Sue) Susa, Las Vegas; and Dolores Jisko, Sharon; and three brothers, Peter Tatusko and Joseph Tatusko, both Hermitage; and George Tatusko, Farrell. Mr. Tatusko also leaves: two grandsons, Eric Tatusko and his wife Corrie, Pittsburgh; and Jeffrey Tatusko and his wife Marcy, Arnold, Pa.; his great-granddaughters, Allison and Alexis Tatusko; and a great-grandson, Lucas Tatusko. TATUSKO Katherine Martha Thut Turosky Farrell homemaker was member of St. Ann's Church Katherine Martha Thut Turosky, 99½ Hamilton Ave., Farrell, died at 7:30 a.m. Sunday, April 28, 2002, in the hospital of Sharon Regional Health System of natural causes following an extended illness. She was 80. Mrs. Turosky was born Nov. 15, 1921, in Farrell to George Thut and Anne Schenker Thut. Katherine attended Farrell area schools and was very active in the former St. Ann's School Parent Teacher Organization. A homemaker, she loved to bake and cook. Katherine had worked at one time for Farrell Baking Co. Katherine was a member of St. Ann's Church in Farrell and was an avid Pittsburgh Penguins and Steelers fan. Her husband, Andrew "Buff" Turosky, whom she married June 20, 1942 in St. Ann's Church, died Jan. 29, 1976. Surviving are: two daughters, Andrea Turosky; and Gale Chuey, both Farrell; a son, Edward R. Turosky and his wife Helen, Sharon; a sister, Hilda A. Maroscher, Hermitage; and two grandsons, Edward Turosky Jr. and Brian Turosky. Besides her husband, Katherine was preceded in death by her parents; and two brothers, George Thut, who was killed in action over Germany during World War II; and Roy M. Thut Sr.
TUROSKY William T. Haggard III Pittsburgh WE retiree was musician, ham radio operator A funeral and committal service will be held Wednesday for William T. Haggard III of 1024 Palmer Road, Fairview Township. He died at 12:55 a.m. Saturday (4-27-01) in UPMC Horizon, Farrell. He was 59. Mr. Haggard was born June 8, 1942, in Sharon to Karl J. and Dorothy Austin Haggard. He was a graduate of Hickory High School in Hermitage and attended Robert Morris College in Pittsburgh. Mr. Haggard retired in 1998 after 32 years as a senior systems engineer for Westinghouse Electric Corp. of Pittsburgh. He was of the Protestant faith. Mr. Haggard was a lifetime member of the National Rifle Association and enjoyed hunting. He was also a ham radio operator, loved music, and was proficient at playing various musical instruments. Mr. Haggard enjoyed cooking and photography. He married the former Rosa Medina on Jan. 28, 1982. She survives at home. Also surviving are: his mother, Dade City, Fla.; five stepdaughters, Mrs. Manual (Vivian) Parraga, Southern Spain; Mayra Polanco, West Palm Beach, Fla.; Alexandra Mercado, Puerto Rico; Elizabeth Mercado, Dominican Republic; and Rosie Mercado, Pittsburgh; nine grandchildren; and two sisters, Mrs. Robert (Barbara) Zeilinger, Eustis, Fla.; and Susan L. Shaffer, Dade City. Mr. Haggard was preceded in death by his father.
HAGGARD Beverly A. McSherry Retired Whitmer Smith buyer was community volunteer Beverly A. McSherry, 631 Carnegie Ave., Sharon, died at 7:40 a.m. Saturday, April 27, 2002, in her home. She was 68. Mrs. McSherry was born Sept. 14, 1933, in Burlington, Vt., to Peter Terry and Verna Zeno Terry. She retired as a buyer for the former Whitmer Smith Department Store in downtown Sharon. Known for being very involved in community life, Mrs. McSherry was a member and volunteer for the F.H. Buhl Club; volunteer for West Hill Ministries afterschool program, both Sharon; and was a Children's Aide Society Advocacy (CASA) volunteer as a child advocate. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Sharon; and the Croatian Club. Her husband, Paul E. McSherry, a former fire chief for the City of Sharon, whom she married July 4, 1953, died Jan. 20, 1994. Surviving are: one son, Paul T. McSherry and his wife Kate, Sharon; two daughters, Mrs. Jeff (Karen) King, Warminster, Pa.; and Mrs. Dante (Deborah) Bonaquist, Grand Island, N.Y.; an aunt, Laura Preston, Essex Junction, Vt.; a sister, Nancy Dupont, Burlington; and eight grandchildren. Besides her husband, Mrs. McSherry was preceded in death by her parents; and a sister, Linda Terry. Memorial contributions may be made to West Hill Ministries in care of First Baptist Church, 301 W. McSHERRY Frances M. Sidley Struthers Homemaker was longtime Mercer church member Frances M. Sidley Struthers, Coolspring Township, formerly of 37 Johnston Road, Coolspring Township, died at 2:44 p.m. Saturday, April 27, 2002, in Woodland Place, Coolspring Township, after a brief illness. She was 96. Mrs. Struthers was born Sept. 1, 1905, in Findley Township to John Gibson Sidley and Matilda McCoy Sidley. A homemaker, she was a member for more than 70 years of Mercer United Methodist Church. Mrs. Struthers also belonged to Jackson Grange. Her husband, William Kenneth Struthers, whom she married May 7, 1927, died Dec. 15, 1972. Surviving are: two daughters, Virginia McCartney, Greenville; and Bernice Carlyon, LaMesa, Calif.; three sons, Richard M. Struthers and his wife Jane, Mercer; William G. Struthers and his wife Linda, Stoneboro; and David L. Struthers and his wife Charlene, Los Angeles; 15 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren. Besides her husband, Mrs. Struthers was preceded in death by her parents; one son, Paul K. Struthers; and several brothers and sisters. STRUTHERS Evangelist Darlene Williams Farrell homemaker served in Greater Mount Zion A funeral service will be held Thursday for Evangelist Darlene Williams, 253 Hamilton Ave., Farrell. She passed away at 11:07 p.m. Friday (4-26-02) in the hospital of Sharon Regional Health System. She was 51. Evangelist Williams was born Dec. 2, 1950, in Sharon to Raymond Williams Sr. and Gladys Samuels Williams. She was a Farrell High School graduate and a homemaker. As a member of Greater Mount Zion Church of God in Christ in Farrell, Evangelist Williams was an evangelist missionary; belonged to the Kingdom Builders Choir; and was a participant in Sunday school and Family Night Worship. Surviving are: one daughter, Nina Doris Whiteside, wife of Aaron D. Whiteside Sr.; two sons, Leroy Montague III and his fiance, Annette Brown; and John Sheffer, all Farrell; four sisters, Mrs. Andrew (Geraldine) Logan, Norfolk, Va.; and Loretta Bender, Carol Jean Gregory and Doris Fryson, the deceased's twin sister, wife of the Rev. Gregory Fryson, all Farrell; three brothers, Raymond Williams and his wife Marilyn; Gerald Williams and his wife Crystal; and Larry Williams and his wife Denise, all Farrell; eight grandchildren, LeRon Anton Montague, Aaron Demond Whiteside Jr., Christine Lana Sanford, TySean Malik Whiteside, James Dallas Brown, LaShawntere Yvonne Brown, Justine Ramon Parker and LaTeasha Mona Parker; and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins. Evangelist Williams was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Frank "Frankie" Williams; and one sister, Pauline "Peaches" Jordan.
