George Donald Gurd Vienna retiree was WWII veteran, avid auto mechanic George Donald Gurd of 3890 Smith Stewart Road, Vienna, died Friday morning (5-3-02) in Northside Medical Center, Youngstown. He was 81. George was born Oct. 15, 1920, in New Creek, W.Va., a son of Thomas and Effie Snyder Gurd. He retired in 1978 from International Harvester, where he was a parts manager. He was a member of First Free Methodist Church, Canfield, and a longtime member and officer in the Organization of Protestant Men. George served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was also an avid auto mechanic. George is survived by: his wife, the former Lauvonne Staggs, whom he married in 1940, at home; and two daughters, Donna Goist, Austintown, Ohio; and Ellen Yungbluth, Liberty Township, Trumbull County. He also leaves six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. George was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Diane; four brothers, Ralph, Gerald, Marshall and Russell Gurd; and his sister, Mildred Morris.
GURD Lt. Col. Emmett C. Shaffer Jr. Retired military man was also an attorney, traveler Retired U.S. Army Lt. Col. Emmett C. Shaffer Jr., 1954 Warner Road NE, Brookfield, passed away at 11:09 p.m. Thursday, May 2, 2002. He was 76. Lt. Col. Shaffer was born Aug. 24, 1925, in Campbell, Ohio, a son of Emmett C. Shaffer Sr. and Agnes McCabe Shaffer. He practiced pro bono law and was a world traveler, having toured more than 61 countries in addition to the 50 American states. Prior to the Korean conflict, he worked as a locomotive fireman on the New York Central Railroad; as a brakeman on the Pennsylvania & Lake Erie Railroad; a tower operator on the Erie Railroad; and as a steelworker at Republic Steel Company, Youngstown. While attending South High School in Youngstown in 1943, he worked at Youngstown Sheet & Tube Co. He enjoyed gardening and reading local and Civil War history. He was a 1952 bachelor of arts summa cum laude graduate from what is now Youngstown State University, where he was honored with a Youngstown College Scholastic Pin. He was also a member of Who's Who in American Colleges and Universities. Lt. Col. Shaffer received his master of arts degree from the college in 1975 and his juris doctorate degree from the University of Akron School of Law in 1979. He also attended graduate courses at the University of Texas, El Paso; New York University; University College, Richmond, Va.; Notre Dame University School of Law at the London School of Economics, England; and graduated from the Command and General Staff College, Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. Lt. Col. Shaffer's military career spanned more than 20 years including service in World War II, and the Korean and Vietnam conflicts. While in the military, he was decorated with a Bronze Star with oak leaf cluster; an Air Medal; Vietnamese Gallantry Cross with Silver Star; Combat Infantry Badge; Joint Service Commendation Medal; Army Commendation Medal with two oak leaf clusters; Vietnamese Service Medal with two campaign stars; and several other campaign and service medals. He was a life member of the Disabled American Veterans; a charter member of the University of Akron School of Law Dean's Club; and belonged to the American Bar Association; Trumbull County Bar Association; Mahoning Valley Historical Society; Knights of Columbus, Third Degree Council 638, El Paso; F.H. Buhl Men's Club, Sharon; Who's Who International; and Civil War Round Table Discussion Group, Youngstown. He was also a charter member of Queen of the Holy Rosary Church, Vienna. Lt. Col. Shaffer is survived by: his wife, the former Florence Fitch, at home; a daughter, Florence L. Diorio, doctor of philosophy in education, Green, Ohio; two sons, Lt. Col. Emmett C. Shaffer III, on active duty in the U.S. Army in Fort Campbell, Ky.; and Lt. Col. Donald L. Shaffer, on active duty in the U.S. Air Force, Charleston Air Force Base, S.C.; a sister, Nelma Leslie, Poland, Ohio; a brother, C. Kenneth Shaffer, Canfield, Ohio; and six grandchildren. SHAFFER Florence Virginia 'Ginny' Redfoot Worked for family business, former Sloan Supply Co. A funeral service will be held Monday for Florence Virginia "Ginny" Redfoot, 370 Mercer Road, Hempfield Township. She died at 8 p.m. Thursday, May 2, 2002, in her home. She was 86. Mrs. Redfoot was born June 21, 1915, in Greenville to Samuel S. and Hulda McClimans Sloan. She attended the former Penn High School, Greenville. Mrs. Redfoot was a homemaker. In her younger years worked in the family business, the former Sloan Supply Co. of Greenville. As a member of Hillside Presbyterian Church in Greenville, she was the longest living member of the church and a member of the church Friendship Class. Her husband, Paul F. Redfoot, whom she married Sept. 3, 1937, died Oct. 20, 1998. Surviving are: one daughter, Mrs. Frank (Carol Lee) Crash, Greenville; two grandchildren, Mrs. Michael (Pam) Higbee, Greenville; and Mrs. David (Susan) Hahne, Transfer; and two great-grandchildren, Adam and Kristina Higbee, Greenville. Besides her husband, Mrs. Redfoot was preceded in death by her parents. Memorial contributions may be made to Hillside Presbyterian Church, 2 N. High St., Greenville 16125.
REDFOOT Angela B. Moderelli Farrell teacher also was long-time sub in Sharpsville A Mass of Christian burial will be held Monday for Angela B. Moderelli, Whispering Oaks, 260 S. Buhl Farm Drive, Apartment 327, Hermitage, formerly of Sharpsville. She died unexpectedly at 5:45 p.m. Thursday, May 2, 2002, in her residence. She was 73. Mrs. Moderelli was born Oct. 23, 1928, in Farrell to Frank Rotell and Elvira Caruso Rotell. She was a graduate of Farrell High School and Thiel College in Greenville, where she earned a bachelor's degree in English education. Mrs. Moderelli was a teacher for Farrell schools and was a longtime substitute for Sharpsville schools. She was a member of Church of Notre Dame, Hermitage; Sharpsville Womens Club; Sharpsville Historical Society; and North Sharon Firehall Ladies Auxiliary. Mrs. Moderelli was an avid reader and loved to travel. Her husband, Guy A. Moderelli, whom she married Aug. 8, 1953, died Aug. 12, 1987. Surviving are: five daughters, Mrs. Robert (Mary Ann) Pacelli, Lindhurst, Ohio; Mrs. Michael (Susan) Allen, Manassas, Va.; Mrs. Brian (Teresa) Macek, Hermitage; Mrs. Richard (Andrea) Gross, Sharpsville; and Mrs. Thomas (Angela) May, Frisco, Texas; one son, Guy F. Moderelli and his wife, Beverly, Sharpsville; three brothers, Anthony J. Rotell and his wife, Marilyn, Brainbridge Island, Wash.; Donald F. Rotell and his wife, Denise, Yakima, Wash.; and John L. Rotell and his wife, Darlene, Spokane, Wash.; and 12 grandchildren, Guy E. Moderelli, Michael A. Moderelli, Kathryn R. Moderelli, Cara M. Pacelli, Elizabeth C. Allen, Nicholas A. Allen, Andrew R. Holko, Camden R. Macek, Sheila M. Gross, Emily J. Gross, Rachel M. May and Gregory T. May. Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents.
