Goldie Ray Boyd
Sharon Steel retiree was school janitor, WWII veteran

A funeral service will be held Tuesday for Goldie Ray Boyd, 642 Hopper Road, Transfer. He died at 5:02 p.m. Saturday, May 11, 2002, in the hospital of Sharon Regional Health System after being stricken at home. He was 81.

Mr. Boyd was born March 19, 1921, in Bicknell, Ind., to Frank Boyd and Anna Furbush Boyd.

He retired in 1983 after 10 years as a janitor for Reynolds School District. Mr. Boyd previously retired in 1975 after 30 years of employment at the former Sharon Steel Corp.'s Farrell plant, where he was a heater helper.

An Army veteran, he served during World War II.

Mr. Boyd was a member of Lakeside Evangelical Congregational Church in Pymatuning Township.

He was an avid Reynolds sports fan and loved gardening, hunting and fishing.

His wife, the former Charlotte M. Bell, whom he married June 8, 1946, survives at home.

Also surviving are: a daughter, Mrs. Dave (Donna) McNeelege; and a son, Dale R. Boyd and his wife Barbara, both Transfer; a sister, Ruth McLinn, Bicknell; four grandchildren, Bryon K. Boyd, Brad A. Boyd, Noel D. Baker and Rob R. McNeelege; and six great-grandchildren.

Mr. Boyd was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Tommy and Archie Boyd; and a sister, Virda Johnson.

William M. Podobnick

Award-winning teacher received Purple Heart

William M. Podobnick, 86 Easton Road, Hermitage, passed away at 10:30 a.m. Sunday (5-12-02) in Butler Veterans Administration Hospital. He was 80.

Mr. Podobnick was born July 2, 1921, in Universal, Pa., to Frank Podobnick and Elsie Richter Podobnick.

"Weeye," as his friends affectionately called him, moved here in 1931 and was a graduate of Hickory High School in Hermitage, where he was a member of the varsity basketball team.

He was also a graduate of the former Shenango Valley Commercial Institute in Sharon, where he later became an accounting instructor for 25 years, retiring in the mid-1980s. In 1980, Mr. Podobnick was recognized by the school for his loyalty, dedication and his outstanding teaching, for which he was given the Paxton Award.

He served in the Medical Corps for the U.S. Army and fought in the European theater of operations, having been wounded on July 19, 1944 in France. He received shell wounds in the neck, shoulder and spine and received a Purple Heart.

Prior to enlisting in the Army, Mr. Podobnick was employed by the former National Castings Division of Midland-Ross Corp., Sharon.

He was a member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, Hermitage; the Slovenian Workingmen's Educational Club, Sharon; and Slovenska Narodna Podporna Jednota Lodge 31.

Mr. Podobnick also belonged to Veterans of Foreign Wars Hickory Post 6166, Hermitage; and Disabled American Veterans unit 55, Mercer County.

William was a devoted sports fan, following Notre Dame football and Detroit Tigers his entire life.

He loved fishing with his family and playing Par 3 Golf.

He was a great dad who was always there for his children and wife. He had exceptional spirit, character and courage.

Surviving are: his wife of 53 years, the former Mildred Hnida, a resident of St. Paul Homes, West Salem Township; his twins, a daughter, Mrs. John (Carrie Ann) Brooks, West Seneca, N.Y.; and a son, Gary Podobnick and his companion, Carol A. Kohut, Hermitage; three brothers, Ed Steklachick and his wife Norma, Hermitage; Harry Steklachick and his wife Maria, San Lorenzo, Calif.; and Charles Steklacic and his wife Betty, Warren, Pa.; one granddaughter, Nicole Lynn Rainier and her husband Rob, Cleveland; and two stepgrandsons, Casey Kohut, Cleveland; and Kyle Kohut, Hermitage.

Mr. Podobnick was preceded in death by his mother; his fathers, Frank Podobnick and Joseph Steklachick; two brothers, Frank Podobnick and John Steklachick; and one daughter, Paula Lynn Podobnick.

Floyd Kenneth Robinson

Self-employed farmer was machine operator

THOMAS, W.Va. -- Floyd Kenneth Robinson, 509 Mount Lake Park, formerly of Harrisville and Mercer, died at 12:30 p.m. Saturday, May 11, 2002, in Cortland Acres Nursing Home after a short illness. He was 89.

Mr. Robinson was born July 5, 1912, in Lackawannock Township to Floyd Newton Robinson and Ora Stella Knauff Robinson.

He was a self-employed farmer for 30 years. He retired in the early 1990s after 13½ years of employment at Cassing Co., West Middlesex, where he was a machine operator.

Mr. Robinson was a member of Harmony Presbyterian Church in Harrisville.

His first wife, the former Eva Zella Hamilton, whom he married May 23, 1933, died Nov. 22, 1972.

His second wife, the former Ruby A. Claypoole Heginbotham, whom he married Nov. 3, 1980, survives at the residence in Mount Lake Park.

Also surviving are: two stepsons, Ronald A. Heginbotham and Robert L. Heginbotham, bout Mount Lake Park; five stepgrandchildren; and seven stepgreat-grandchildren.

Mr. Robinson was preceded in death by his parents.

Drusiana "Teresa" Capozzoli, 500 Beechwood Ave., Farrell, died at 3 a.m. today (5-13-02) in her home. She was 99.

Ann M. Deluchie Jarocki

Farrell woman was registered nurse, Army captain

Ann M. Deluchie Jarocki, 731 Indiana Ave., Farrell, died of natural causes at 1 p.m. Saturday, May 11, 2002, in her home. She was 83.

Mrs. Jarocki was born June 14, 1918, in Sharon, to Samuel Deluchie and Annette Bianco Deluchie.

She was a graduate of Farrell High School Class of 1936.

A registered nurse, Mrs. Jarocki received her certificate of nursing from the former Christian H. Buhl School of Nursing in 1939.

She worked at Trumbull Memorial Hospital, Warren, Ohio, from 1939 to 1941.

In 1941, Mrs. Jarocki entered the Army Nurse Corps before the U.S. entered World War II. She was stationed at Camp Lee, Va., and Fort Benning, Ga.

In March of 1942, she was stationed in Australia and New Guinea as part of the first contingent of nurses to arrive there. She served during World War II and was overseas for two years.

Having served in the Army for five years, her final assignment was at Butler Veterans Administration Medical Center, and prior to her discharge, achieved the rank of captain.

She retired in 1993 after 30 years of service from the Sharon Regional Health System, where she worked in the Behavioral Health Center.

As a member of St. Adalbert's Church in Farrell, when the church elementary school was in operation, Mrs. Jarocki was an active member of its Parent Teacher Organization; and was also a member of the Eckles Elementary Parent Teacher Association, having served as an officer in both.

In 1952, she helped organize the Mercer County Association of the Retarded (MCAR). She served as its first president and has since been active on its board of directors, as well as on many committees.

Mrs. Jarocki was a charter member of the Women's World War II Memorial Organization. She also belonged to Association for Retarded Citizens (ARC) and AARP, a retired person's organization.

An ardent volunteer, Mrs. Jarocki did blood pressure screenings at various locations in the Shenango Valley; was a "Polio Volunteer" in 1954 with Dr. Jonas Salk, administering vaccinations and medications to control polio; was a school aide at Monsignor Geno Monti Elementary School, Farrell; and was a camp nurse for many years at Camp Ah-Tol-Anac, Union City, as well as at Camp Crestview, Slippery Rock, both summer camps for the mentally challenged.

For her outstanding service and achievements, she was honored at the MCAR 50th Anniversary, celebrated on Jan. 11 of this year.

Her husband, Peter J. Jarocki, whom she married Feb. 23, 1946, died March 9, 1993.

Surviving are: two sons, Joseph P. Jarocki, husband of Gail, Reston, Va.; and Jerome P. Jarocki, husband of Karen, Brunswick, Ga.; two daughters, Judy Ann Jarocki, Farrell; and Anna Marie Wagner, wife of David, Northville, Mich.; two sisters, Rose Mikulin, Sharon; and Helen Rossi, Farrell; four grandsons, Jeoffrey Jarocki, Vincent Jarocki, Michael Jarocki and Alec Wagner; and three granddaughters, Jodie Jarocki, Meridith Jarocki and Kathryn Jarocki.

Besides her husband, Mrs. Jarocki was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Frank "Spike" Deluchie; and two sisters, Mary Ruffo and Nellie Heath.
