Vera M. Kozar Bernard A former nurse, homemaker belonged to Fatima church Vera M. Kozar Bernard, Hermitage, formerly of Shenango Boulevard, Farrell, died of natural causes at 1:45 a.m. today, May 16, 2002, in Nugent Convalescent Home, Hermitage. She was 92. Mrs. Bernard was born July 26, 1909, in Farrell to John Kozar Sr. and Mary Latsko Kozar. An alumna of Farrell High School Class of 1927, she graduated from the former Christian Buhl Hospital School of Nursing in Sharon. Mrs. Bernard was a registered nurse in New York City and for what is now Sharon Regional Health System. A homemaker, she was a member of Our Lady of Fatima Church, Farrell. Mrs. Bernard also belonged to Sharon General Hospital Alumni Association. Her husband, Walter L. Bernard, whom she married Feb. 17, 1935, died Nov. 14, 1992. Surviving are: a son, Dr. Robert A. Bernard, husband of Marie, Mechanicsburg, Pa.; and two granddaughters, Lori Kiger, wife of Chuck, Bloomsburg, Pa.; and Lynda Hambright, wife of Richard, Mechanicsburg. Besides her husband, Mrs. Bernard was preceded in death by her parents; five brothers, William, Steve, Frank, Julius and Jack Kozar; and four sisters, Mollie Neubauer, Agnes Silverman, Sophie Best and Eleanor Salzinger. BERNARD Hilda S. Clark Homemaker was Penney's clerk, welfare caseworker BOARDMAN, Ohio -- A funeral service will be held Saturday for Hilda S. Clark of Boardman, formerly of Woodside Drive, Hermitage. She passed away peacefully on Tuesday morning (5-14-02) in Shepherd of the Valley Lutheran Retirement Center. She was 88. Mrs. Clark was born on April 15, 1914, in Claysville, Pa., a daughter of Elmer E. and Sarah Ann Anthony Sharp. She was a graduate of Wilmington High School, New Wilmington. A homemaker, Mrs. Clark also worked in her later years as a retail clerk for J.C. Penney Co.; and for several years was a caseworker for the Department of Public Assistance, both Hermitage. Mrs. Clark was a former member of what was Hickory School District's Parent Teacher Association in Mercer County. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Sharon, where at one time she taught Sunday school and belonged to the Women's Circle. Her husband, George Paul Clark Sr., whom she married April 15, 1937, passed away March 29, 1965. She is survived by: a son, George Paul Clark Jr. and his wife Linda R., Boardman; one sister, Jane Campbell, New Wilmington; two brothers, John R. "Jack" Sharp, New Wilmington; and Richard E. Sharp, Reading, Pa.; four sisters-in-law, Lois Sharp, New Castle; Helen Sharp, Franklin; and Margaret Sharp and Frances Sharp, both New Wilmington. She also leaves three grandchildren, Sherry L. Hoffman, Jennifer A. Hoffman and Patrick R. Hoffman. Besides her husband, Mrs. Clark was preceded in death by her parents; four brothers, William E. Sharp, Charles R. Sharp, James H. Sharp and E. Gailey Sharp; and three sisters, Nancy J. Sharp, Ann Sharp and Mary Boal. CLARK Tina M. Darden Farrell homemaker worked as aide, was crossing guard A funeral service will be held Saturday for Tina M. Darden, 117 Florida St., Farrell. She passed away at 10:33 p.m. Monday (5-13-02) in the hospital of Sharon Regional Health System. She was 86. Mrs. Darden was born Sept. 28, 1915, in Georgia to John Hill and Claudia Stanford Hill. A longtime Shenango Valley resident, she was a former school crossing guard in Farrell and served as an aide with the Farrell Mayor's Human Relations Commission. Mrs. Darden also worked in the Emergency School Aide Act (ESAA) program during the 1970s. A homemaker, she was a former member of First Baptist Church in Farrell. Mrs. Darden enjoyed reading, visiting nursing homes and attending church services. Her husband, Randolph R. Darden, whom she married Jan. 10, 1935, died Nov. 6, 1967. Surviving are: a stepdaughter, Myrtice Brooks, Hampton, Ga.; a son, Hasco Darden and his wife Linda J., Farrell; her four grandchildren, Demetreus H. Darden, Aaron C. Darden, Pamela T. Darden; and Marlo Y. Abrams and her husband Kenneth; and several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. She was the last of her siblings. Besides her husband, Mrs. Darden was preceded in death by her parents; five sisters, Cora, Marie, Ruth, Sadie and another sister; and two brothers, Elmore and Norman Hill.
DARDEN John Charles Fletcher Retired Chadderton manager was truck driver, Navy vet SLIGO, Pa. -- John Charles Fletcher of Sligo passed away at 6 a.m. Wednesday, May 15, 2002, in his home after a courageous battle with cancer. He never lost his sense of humor or his neverending love for his family throughout his illness. He was 59 years old. Mr. Fletcher was born Aug. 15, 1942, in Jamestown, R.I., a son of the late Charles C. Fletcher and Mary Josephine Forde Fletcher. He attended schools in James-town as well as in Mystic, Conn. Mr. Fletcher had served 11 years with the U.S. Navy and was based in Cuba during the Cuban Missile Crisis. He also served aboard the U.S.S. Forrestal during the retrieval of John Glenn from his first space mission. His commanding officer on board the Forrestal was Roger Staubach, former quarterback of the Dallas Cowboys. Mr. Fletcher had also served aboard the Essex and the U.S. Enterprise. Following his military service career, he worked as an over-the-road tractor-trailer driver employed by R&H Trucking of Clarion, then retired after 21 years with Chadderton Trucking of Sharon. He had been operations manager at the company for the past 11 years. Mr. Fletcher enjoyed auto drives with his wife, Betty, and their fur baby, Petey, looking for wildlife. He enjoyed country-western music and chatting on the Internet with folks from County Mayo, Ireland, the homeplace of his mother. Mr. Fletcher married the former Betty V. Seybert on Nov. 30, 1973, in Rimersburg, Pa. She survives along with: a daughter, Cynthia K. Craig Jones and her husband Larry, Charlotte, Mich.; two grandsons, Craig Jones, Charlotte; and Shane Risher, Clarion; and a number of nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, Mr. Fletcher was preceded in death by a son, Michael A. Craig, who died July 20, 1979; a sister, Ann Bolger, in 1993; and a niece, Sheila Bolger. FLETCHER Emil G. Hudak GATX retiree liked to garden, entertain on Hawaiian guitar NEW CASTLE -- A funeral service will be held Saturday for Emil G. Hudak, St. Francis Skilled Care Hospital, New Castle, formerly of 260 Shenango Blvd., Farrell. He died at 7:15 a.m. Wednesday, May 15, 2002, in his home after an extended illness. He was 87. Mr. Hudak was born July 10, 1914, in Farrell to Michael Hudak and Mary Salance Hudak. He attended Sharon schools and retired in 1977 as a welder from General American Transportation Corp.'s former Masury plant, where he worked for 29 years. Mr. Hudak was previously a self-employed wallpaper hanger. He also served as an auxiliary policeman for the City of Farrell. Mr. Hudak was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church in New Castle and a former member of St. John's Episcopal Church in Sharon. He was an avid bowler and bocci player and belonged to Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5286; and the Slovak Home, both Farrell. Mr. Hudak loved to work in his garden and also enjoyed entertaining with his Hawaiian guitar. Surviving are: his wife, the former Madelon Cervenak, whom he married Sept. 26, 1936; two daughters, Mrs. John (Joyce) Boldt, New Castle; and Leslie Hudak, San Diego; a son, Robert Hudak, Venice, Fla., and Rehobeth Beach, Del.; eight grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. Mr. Hudak was preceded in death by his parents; six sisters, Ruth Bertrand, Mary Davis, Vera Wlardsky, Helen Flaherty, Mildred Hudak and Pauline Schafer; a brother, John Hudak; and a great-great-grandchild, Aleah Faria. HUDAK Grace Adelia Craig King Grove City resident was secretary, Army vet in Korea Grace Adelia Craig King, 448 E. Main St., Grove City, died at 3:20 p.m. Wednesday, May 15, 2002, in Butler Memorial Hospital after a brief illness. She was 69. Mrs. King was born July 11, 1932, in Petrolia, Pa., to George Theodore Craig and Frances Leona McGinnis Craig. She was a secretary for several different companies for about 20 years. A U.S. Army veteran, Mrs. King served from Jan. 19, 1951, to Dec. 15, 1953, in the Korean conflict. She was of the Catholic faith. Surviving are: her husband, Gene Ray King, whom she married May 21, 1966, at home; three sons, Gene R. "Chip" King II; Craig V. King and his wife Julie; and Scott D. King and his wife Kendra, all Grove City; two sisters, Mrs. Frederick (Donna J.) Freiters, Chicora; and Mrs. Robert R. (Betty L.) Davis, Las Vegas; a brother, John P. Craig, Foxburg, Clarion County; and two grandchildren. Mrs. King was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Charles and George Craig; and one sister, Deanna Morrow.
John H. Magner Jr. Retired B&LE superintendent was WWII vet, active Lion A Mass of Christian burial will be held Saturday for John H. Magner Jr., 1 Eastwood Drive, Hempfield Township. He died at 8:44 a.m. Tuesday, May 14, 2002, in the emergency room of UPMC Horizon, Greenville, after an apparent heart attack. He was 80. Mr. Magner was born April 2, 1922, in Pittsburgh to John H. Magner Sr. and Mary Daugherty Magner. He retired in 1980 as superintendent of transportation from Bessemer & Lake Erie Railroad Co., Greenville, where he worked for 35 years. An Army Air Force veteran, Mr. Magner served during World War II with the Eighth Air Force as a lead navigator and had 29 missions in B-17s. He attained the rank of major and served from August 1944 to October 1945. Mr. Magner was an active member of Greenville Lions Club; an honorary member of White Oak Shooting Club, Greenville; and belonged to Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7599, Reynolds; and Greenville Country Club. He belonged to St. Michael's Church, Greenville; and was also a proud member of the Eastwood Drive Trainman Club. Surviving are: his wife, the former Shirley A. Stead, whom he married June 21, 1949, at home; a daughter, Terry Beutler, Houston; a son, Richard E. Magner, Atlanta; three sisters, Mrs. Stanley (Alice) Novacki and Mrs. Jack (Imogene) Sangl, both Pittsburgh; and Eleanor Magner, Fredonia, N.Y.; and a granddaughter, Sarah Beutler. Mr. Magner was preceded in death by his parents; and one brother, Richard J. Magner. MAGNER Regina L. Patterson Sts. Peter and Paul Lutheran member was homemaker A funeral service will be held Friday for Regina L. Patterson of 59 Elm Ave., formerly of 678 Stambaugh Ave., both Sharon. She passed away unexpectedly at noon Tuesday, May 14, 2002, in the emergency room of Sharon Regional Health System. She was 28. Born Jan. 16, 1974, in Sharon, she was a daughter of James Patterson of Sharon and the late Linda Osborne Patterson. Regina attended Sharon schools and was a homemaker. She was a member of Sts. Peter and Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church in Sharon. She enjoyed scrapbooking, bingo and macrame. She was a devoted daughter to her mother during her mom's illness, never leaving her side until her death Jan. 28 of this year. Besides her father, Regina leaves: two children whom she cherished, Christopher James Patterson and Devin Michael Patterson, both at home; one sister, Amanda M. Patterson of Sharon; and her maternal grandmother, Verna Taylor, Hermitage. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 19 Jefferson Avenue, Sharon 16146.
PATTERSON Samuel A. Steele Samuel A. Steele, 284 Tait Road, Coolspring Township, died today (5-16-02) in the hospital of Sharon Regional Health System. He was 75. Obituary information was incomplete.
