Edward Ondo
General American retiree loved to go fishing

FOWLER TOWNSHIP -- Calling hours will be held Tuesday for Edward Ondo, Kinsman, Ohio. He died Friday, May 24, 2002, in Meadowbrook Manor nursing home. He was 80.

Ed was born March 22, 1922, in Greenville to John and Mary Stefanko Ondo.

He retired in 1982 as a welder from General American Transportation Corp.’s former Masury plant.

Ed loved to fish and when he was able, you could find him at Pymatuning Lake, contentedly waiting for that fish to bite.

His wife, the former Margaret Sweeney, whom he married April 19, 1952, died Nov. 12, 1982. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents; six brothers; and three sisters.

Surviving are: his son, Dennis Ondo, Kinsman; his daughter, Eileen Herman and her husband Nick, Delta Junction, Alaska; one brother, Frank Ondo, Kinsman; three grandchildren, Angie Kerr, Amanda Ondo and Charlie Herman; one great-granddaughter, Angelique Kerr; and several nieces and nephews.

Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice.

Anna M. Dzapo

Farrell native helped brides at work, was 4-H leader

Anna M. Dzapo of 1015 Warner Road NE, Vienna, died at 12:10 a.m. Sunday (5-26-02) in her residence. She was 90.

Mrs. Dzapo was born April 15, 1912, in Farrell, a daughter of Joseph and Mary Pucic Vrbanich.

She was a 1929 graduate of Farrell High School.

Mrs. Dzapo had been employed at the former McKelvey’s Department Store in Youngstown, in its Bridal Department; and also worked at Evelyn’s Bridal Shop, Warren, Ohio.

Her memberships included Croatian Fraternal Union Lodge 126, Farrell, where she was a lifelong member; and Croatian American Civic Club Ladies Auxiliary, also Farrell.

Mrs. Dzapo was also a Trumbull County 4-H leader for 22 years and a talented crafter and cook.

Her husband, Joseph Dzapo, whom she married Jan. 8, 1930, died Nov. 17, 1992.

Survivors include: one daughter, Lois E. Coutant, Athens, Ohio; one daughter-in-law, Marjorie Dzapo, Howland, Ohio; a lifelong friend and neighbor, Karen Saker; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and their families.

Besides her husband, Mrs. Dzapo was preceded in death by her parents; one son, Carl Joseph Dzapo; and one sister, Frances Vrbanich.

John Hvozda

Hermitage service station owner was township official

A Divine Liturgy will be held Wednesday for John Hvozda, 745 Wilhelm Road, Hermitage. He died unexpectedly at 1:10 p.m. Saturday (5-25-02) in the hospital of Sharon Regional Health System after being stricken at home. He was 89.

Mr. Hvozda was born March 26, 1913, in Clymer, Pa., to Andrew Hvozda and Anna Capsala Hvozda.

An Army Air Corps veteran, he was stationed in England during the Battle of Great Britain during World War II.

Mr. Hvozda was a self-employed service station owner and was owner/operator for 37 years of area businesses, retiring in 1980.

He served as Hickory Township Commissioner in the 1950s.

As a member of St. Michael’s Byzantine Catholic Church, Hermitage, Mr. Hvozda was active in many capacities and was a past president of the church council.

He also belonged to Hermitage Rotary Club; American Legion; Greek Catholic Union, for which he was a past president; the Sokol Club, Farrell; and was the oldest member of Benevolent and Protective Order of the Elks Lodge 103, Sharon, having belonged to the organization for 66 years.

Mr. Hvozda also loved gardening.

Surviving are: his wife, the former Bertha M. Yurko, whom he married on Aug. 3, 1946, at home; three sons, George A. Hvozda, Hermitage; John J. Hvozda, Sharon; and William E. Hvozda, Tionesta, Pa.; two sisters, Mary Embrey, Alexandria, Va.; and Mrs. Frank (Marge) Meister, Venice, Fla.; a brother, Steve, and his wife Annie Hvozda, Louisville, Ky.; and three grandchildren, Nicholas, Jonathan and Leslie Hvozda.

Mr. Hvozda was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Andy and Michael Hvozda; and two sisters, Ann Hanrahan and Helen Sheehan.

W.R. ‘Bill’ Kaylor

Butler man was owner of Grove City Bus Lines

PITTSBURGH -- W.R. "Bill" Kaylor, Butler, died at 9 p.m. Saturday, May 25, 2002, in Mercy Hospital after a short illness. He was 74.

Born Oct. 24, 1927, in Greensburg, Pa., Mr. Kaylor was a son of the late Alfred Kaylor and Edna Clark Kaylor.

He was a member of North Main Street Church of God and had attended Christ Outreach Church, both Butler.

Mr. Kaylor was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and belonged to Free and Accepted Masons Lodge 272, Butler; Scottish Rites New Castle Consistory; Syria Temple Shrine; Butler Shrine Caravan No. 14; Butler Shrine Luncheon Club; and Syria Shrine Motor Corp.

He retired as owner of Butler Motor Transit and Grove City Bus Lines, and was well-known for his love for driving people around the country. Most recently, Mr. Kaylor completed a trip three weeks ago, prior to his illness.

He is survived by: his wife, Marylou Carnahan Kaylor. They were married Oct. 25, 1982.

Also surviving are: two daughters, Mrs. Ronald (Barbara) Hawk, Worthington, Butler County; and Terri Mansfield, Pittsburgh; five sons, William G. Kaylor, Thomas M. Kaylor and Robert M. Kaylor, all Butler; and Jeffrey Bauer and Todd Bauer, both Clarion, Pa.; 11 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two sisters, Vivian Hill, Los Angeles; and Mrs. Sam (Delores) Rura, Coral, Pa.; and two brothers, Richard Kaylor, Oklahoma; and John Kaylor, Louisiana.

Besides his parents, Mr. Kaylor was preceded in death by an infant sister and a brother.

Dorothy L. Bishop

Sharpsville woman, Hickory grad worked at Sharon Store

A funeral service will be held Wednesday for Dorothy L. Bishop of 2958 Valley View Road, Sharpsville, and formerly of Ivanhoe Road in South Pymatuning Township. She passed away at 5:15 a.m. Saturday (5-25-02) in the hospital of Sharon Regional Health System after an extended illness. She was 76.

Mrs. Bishop was born March 9, 1926, in Mercer, a daughter of Kenneth and Harriet Jewell Adams.

Mrs. Bishop was a Hickory High School alumna.

She worked in the 1960s for the former Sharon Store in downtown Sharon, and later for the former Strouss-Hirschberg Store in Youngstown, retiring in the 1980s.

She was a member of First United Methodist Church in Sharon.

Mrs. Bishop was an avid reader and enjoyed counter cross-stitching.

Her husband, Paul W. Bishop Sr., whom she married on March 17, 1946, passed away on Aug. 27, 1998.

She leaves: a son, Paul W. Bishop Jr. and his wife Linda Marie, with whom she lived; two daughters, Mrs. Frank (Jeanne A.) Koch, Sharon; and Mrs. Paul (Marylou) Polasky, Washington, Pa.; five grandchildren, Heather Lynne Micozzi, Jason Ryan Koch, Nicholas Paul Polasky, David Michael Polasky and Alyssa Joan Horzich Koch; and one great-grandson, Jarrett-Ryan Bishop.

Also surviving are: her two sisters, Mrs. Joseph (Donna) Pomponio, Transfer; and Norma Adams, Greenville; and a brother, Russell and his wife Renee Adams, also Greenville.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents.

Ernest L. Jackson

Longtime fire dep’t. member active in church, town life

Ernest L. Jackson, 404 Jackson St., Jamestown, died at 6:08 a.m. Saturday, May 25, 2002, in University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. He was 74.

Mr. Jackson was born Feb. 25, 1928, in South Shenango Township, Crawford County, to Andrew H. Jackson and Weltha Proper Jackson.

He retired after 20 years of employment from the former Greenville Steel Car Co., where he was a security guard. Mr. Jackson was also a security guard for 10 years at the former Greenville Hospital.

He was a member and lay leader of Jamestown United Methodist Church.

Mr. Jackson served as a private in the U.S. Army and was a 55-year member of Jamestown Fire Department, assisting with the Fire Police and ambulance service. He also belonged to Jamestown Lions Club; Jamestown Fair Staff; and since 1983, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5424, Jamestown.

He was a lifetime member of Northwestern Fireman’s Organization and a member of the Mercer County Fireman’s group.

Mr. Jackson enjoyed modern square dancing.

Surviving are: his wife, the former Betty Osborne, whom he married May 21, 1954, at home; a daughter, Mary Marion, Grove City; two granddaughters, Wendy, wife of Joseph Cognata, Greenville; and Diane Buckley, Jamestown; a grandson, Chris Mentch, Jamestown; and one great-grandchild.

Mr. Jackson was preceded in death by his parents; and a sister, Lila Hughes.

William ‘Bill’ A. Zawacki

Retired GATX foreman was WWII vet, attended Thiel

A Mass of Christian burial will be held Wednesday for William "Bill" A. Zawacki, 890 Lillian Drive, Hermitage. He died at 4:50 p.m. Saturday, May 25, 2002, in the hospital of Sharon Regional Health System after an extended illness. He was 81.

Mr. Zawacki was born Jan. 30, 1921, in Farrell to Stanley Zawacki and Frances Tokarska Zawacki.

He graduated from Farrell High School in 1938 and then attended Thiel College in Greenville. While working at General American Transportation Corp.’s former Masury plant, Mr. Zawacki continued to go to school, where he received numerous certificates in the management field.

He worked for the company from Nov. 5, 1946 to Aug. 1, 1983, beginning in the maintenance department, and following a promotion, advanced to production foreman, working in that capacity for 27 years.

Mr. Zawacki was a member of St. Adalbert’s Church, Farrell, and its Men’s Club.

He served during World War II in the 63rd Infantry Division from 1942 to 1946, having achieved the rank of staff sergeant.

Mr. Zawacki belonged to GATX Retirees; Veterans of Foreign Wars Hickory Post 6166, Hermitage; and the National Geographic Society.

He enjoyed gardening, fishing and reading.

His wife, the former Helen Paszul, whom he married on Aug. 20, 1955, survives at home.

Also surviving are several nieces and nephews.

Mr. Zawacki was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Helen Ischo and Ceile Rio; and two brothers, Edmund Zawacki and Alfred Zawacki.

John J. Bozzo

Lady of Fatima member was retired machinist

John J. Bozzo, 794 S. Oakland Ave., Sharon, passed away at 5:30 p.m. Friday, May 24, 2002, in the hospital of Sharon Regional Health System. He was 90.

Mr. Bozzo was born Oct. 26, 1911, in New Alexandra, Pa., a son of the late Giuseppe and Maria Fanelli Bozzo.

John and his family moved to the area in 1927.

He retired in 1973 as a machinist from the former Jennings Manufacturing Co., Masury, where he had worked for more than 20 years. He previously had worked for the former National Castings Division of Midland-Ross Corp., Sharon, and Sharon Transformer Division of Westinghouse Electric Corp.

Mr. Bozzo was a member of Our Lady of Fatima Church; the Christopher Columbus Society; Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5286; and the First Italian Social Club, where he had been an officer for many years, all located in Farrell.

He was also a life member of the Slovenian Workingmen’s Educational Club, Sharon; a past member of the New Deal Club in Farrell, where he participated in its Bocce League; and belonged to the Italian Home Club’s Bocce League. Mr. Bozzo was a former member of the Sunset Lanes Senior Bowling League, Farrell.

He enjoyed gardening and walking.

His wife, the former Rose C. Rio, whom he married on June 25, 1936, died on Sept. 14, 1990.

Mr. Bozzo is survived by: a daughter, Mrs. Joseph (Marla Jean) Rococi, Hermitage; three sisters, Mary Kessler, Cleveland; Rose Gessler, Greenville; and Patricia Montgomery, Panama City, Fla.; four brothers, Michael Bozzo, Sharon; Angelo Bozzo, Hermitage; Santino Bozzo, Transfer; and Luciano Bozzo, West Hills, Calif.; and two grandchildren, Jon C. Rococi, Farrell; and Danielle R. Rococi, Hermitage.

Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by parents; his stepmother, Maria Mignon Bozzo; four brothers, Andrew, Anthony, Antonio and Donato Bozzo; and one grandson, Joseph Robert Rococi.
