Norman C. Stevens Air base firefighter of Sharon was painter, WWII Navy vet A memorial service will be held Friday for Norman C. Stevens, a devoted father and grandfather, of 1054 Woodland St., Sharon. He died at 5:19 a.m. Tuesday, May 28, 2002, in UPMC Horizon, Greenville, after an extended illness. He was 76. Mr. Stevens was born Aug. 6, 1925, in Sharon to Walter Monroe Stevens and Carrie Louise Fitch Stevens. He graduated in 1943 from the former Hartford High School. Mr. Stevens worked as a firefighter for the Youngstown Air Base and was a painter for William J. Stevens Painting Co., of which he assumed ownership after the death of his brother. He was of the Methodist faith. Drafted during World War II, Mr. Stevens served for three years in the U.S. Navy and, since 1950, was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1338, Sharon. He also belonged to American Legion Post 299, also Sharon. He was a sports enthusiast and followed all of the local sports in the Shenango Valley. Mr. Stevens also enjoyed hunting and fishing. Surviving are: two sons, John Charles Stevens and his wife Sherry, Sharon; and Robert Joseph Stevens, Orlando, Fla.; a brother, Raymond Harold Stevens, Clearwater, Fla.; and two grandchildren, Jonathan Stevens and Tara Stevens. Mr. Stevens was preceded in death by his parents; and one brother, William J. Stevens. Memorial contributions may be made to the F. H. Buhl Club, 28 N. Pine St., Sharon 16146.
STEVENS Edward J. Wolfinger Active St. Joe's member was longtime Sharon locksmith A funeral Mass will be held Friday for Edward J. Wolfinger of 1048 Griswold St., Sharon. He passed away at 6:30 p.m. Monday, May 27, 2002, in the hospital of Sharon Regional Health System following a brief illness. He was 91. A lifelong resident of Sharon, Mr. Wolfinger was born April 5, 1911, a son of the late John and Ursula Kundi Wolfinger. He graduated from St. Joseph Parochial Grade School and was a 1928 alumnus of Sharon High School. Mr. Wolfinger owned and operated Edward J. Wolfinger Locksmith in Sharon from 1952 to 1995. He previously had been a self-employed carpenter and contractor. Mr. Wolfinger was a lifelong active member of St. Joseph's Church in Sharon and a life member of Knights of Columbus Sharon Council 684 and Fourth Degree Sharon Assembly. He also belonged to Penn-Ohio Locksmith Association and enjoyed hunting and fishing while visiting his family's camp in the Kinzua area of McKean County. On June 20, 1940, he married the former Ann M. Hahn in St. Patrick's Church, Hubbard. She preceded him in death March 19, 1978. Survivors include: one son, Edward J. Wolfinger Jr. and his wife Rosemary, Hubbard; three grandchildren, Jason D. Wolfinger, also Hubbard; Edward J. Wolfinger III and his wife Kimmer, North Bloomfield, Ohio; and Christine Learn, wife of Christopher, Austintown, Ohio; and two great-granddaughters, Katelyn and Chelsea Learn. In addition to his parents and his wife, Mr. Wolfinger was preceded in death by two sons, Richard D. Wolfinger; and an infant, Raymond Wolfinger; one sister, Ann Brogley; and five brothers, John, Frank, Steven, William and Charles Wolfinger. WOLFINGER Meredieth Reels Ex-Mental Health executive secretary served in church A funeral service will be held Friday for Meredieth Reels, 978 Sherman Ave., Sharon. She died at 8:40 a.m. Friday (5-24-02) in Hospitality Care Center, Hermitage. She was 87. Mrs. Reels was born July 18, 1914, in Sharon to Thomas Martin and Georgia A. Scates Martin. She was executive secretary for the Mental Health Association of Mercer County and also worked for the former Carver Community Center in Farrell. As a member of First Baptist Church in Farrell, Mrs. Reels was church secretary; a youth leader; leader of the Sunshine Band; and taught vacation Bible school, as well as Sunday school. Her hobbies included crafts and cooking. Surviving are: her husband, Clifford Reels, whom she married in 1959; a brother, Douglas Martin, College Park, Ga.; nieces and nephews; and a host of other relatives and friends. Mrs. Reels was preceded in death by her parents; four sisters, Coralee Hunter, Lucinda Saunders, Harriette Morrison and Julia Steele; and three brothers, Samual T. Martin, James H. Martin and William A. Martin.
REELS Joann Greenfield Greenville native worked for Zeka's in Sharpsville A funeral service will be held Friday for Joann Greenfield, Mertz Towers, 52 S. Mercer Ave., Sharpsville. She died of natural causes at 9 p.m. Monday, May 27, 2002, in her residence. She was 74. Mrs. Greenfield was born June 5, 1927, in Greenville to Vernon Ferguson and Josephine Callahan Ferguson. She was a graduate of St. Michael's School in Greenville and was employed for 20 years at the former Zeka's Tavern in Sharpsville, where she was a bartender and cook. Mrs. Greenfield was of the Catholic faith and loved crossword puzzles. She was an avid reader and a collector of clowns. Surviving are: two daughters, Tina McMath and Mrs. Daniel (Sandra) Melius, both Sharpsville; two sons, James "Bucky" Reinhart and his wife Lynn, Transfer; and Paul Reinhart, Greenville; five grandchildren, Daniel and Amanda Melius; Nicole Tedesco; and Thomas and Devon McMath; one great-granddaughter, Macy Melius; and six nieces and nephews. Mrs. Greenfield was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, James Ferguson; and a sister, Rae Marie Lamont.
GREENFIELD Howard C. 'Pete' Diefenderfer Westinghouse retiree formerly lived in Sharpsville STAMFORD, Conn. -- A funeral service will be held Saturday for Howard C. "Pete" Diefenderfer, 15 Davenport Farm Lane East, Stamford, formerly of Main Street in Sharpsville. He died of natural causes at 9:10 a.m. Monday, May 27, 2002, in the William and Sally Tandet Center for Continuing Care. He was 88. Mr. Diefenderfer was born Aug. 8, 1913, in Transfer to George M. Diefenderfer and Nettie A. Morneweck Diefenderfer. He retired in March 1974 after 33 years of employment at the former Sharon Transformer Division of Westinghouse Electric Corp., where he was a technician. Mr. Diefenderfer was a member of First United Methodist Church, Sharpsville. His wife, the former Jane R. Bolton, whom he married Oct. 19, 1935, died April 23, 2000. Surviving are: a daughter, Mrs. Bill (Becky) Wilds, Sarasota, Fla.; a son, George and his wife Jeannie Diefenderfer, Stamford; a sister, Mrs. Ned (Grace) Ferry, Transfer; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Besides his wife, Mr. Diefenderfer was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Verne Diefenderfer; and a sister, Zora Cornthwait. Memorial contributions may be made in Howard's name to First United Methodist Church, 148 E. Shenango St., Sharpsville 16150.
