Emily Novak
Homemaker liked to sew, crochet, garden and emboss

Emily Novak, 890 Clarksville Road, Hermitage, died at 7:15 p.m. Friday, May 31, 2002, in UPMC Horizon, Farrell, after an extended illness. She was 81.

Mrs. Novak was born Dec. 23, 1920, in Galloway, W.Va., to Stephen Zec and Anna Rasko Zec.

A homemaker, she enjoyed crocheting, sewing, embossing and gardening.

Her husband, Edward Novak, whom she married on Jan. 19, 1947, died Nov. 24, 1985.

Surviving are: a daughter, Gloria J. Moore, Hermitage; two sisters, Helen Hranko, Hermitage; and Mary Bone, Powhaten Point, Ohio; two brothers, Lewis Zec, Brookfield; and Nick Zec, Masury; two grandchildren, Mrs. Jay (Cammy) Brindza, Transfer; and Corey Moore, Hermitage; and two great-grandchildren, Joshua Brindza and Xavier Moore.

Besides her husband, Mrs. Novak was preceded in death by her parents; four sisters, Eva Zec, Margaret Popovich, Mildred Breu and Pauline Cucish; and three brothers, Stephen, John and Michael Zec.

Helen A. Dell

St. Paul's UCC member was retired school secretary

A funeral service will be held Tuesday for Helen A. Dell, 214 Old Sharon Road, Mercer. She died at 5 p.m. Friday, May 31, 2002, in her home. She was 93.

Mrs. Dell was born Nov. 24, 1908, in Canton, Ohio, to Deloss Feague and Phidella Hunter Feague.

A graduate of Hickory High School in Hermitage and the former Shenango Valley Business School in Sharon, Mrs. Dell was once employed by the Pennsylvania Department of Highways. She retired as a secretary from Mercer area schools, having been a school secretary for Mercer High School for many years.

Mrs. Dell was a 50-year member of St. Paul's United Church of Christ, Hermitage, and was an associate member of Bethany Presbyterian Church in Mercer, where she belonged to the church's Fun Club.

She was also a member of Mount Pleasant Grange and was an avid card club participant.

Her husband, John W. Dell, whom she married on March 24, 1934, died Jan. 13, 1982.

Surviving are: one daughter, Mrs. Byron (Mary) Harris, Mercer; one brother, Donald Hunter, Santa Ana, Calif.; one sister, Phidella Coleman, Dunedin, Fla.; five grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

Besides her husband, Mrs. Dell was preceded in death by her parents; four brothers, Robert, Curtis, Hunter and Harry Louis Feague; and a sister, Jeanette Hunter.

John Baker

John Baker, 1049 Carroll Lane, Hermitage, died unexpectedly at 4:37 p.m. Saturday (6-1-02) in the emergency room of Sharon Regional Health System. He was 58.

Catherine M. Burdick

Our Lady of Fatima member retired from UPMC, Farrell

A funeral Mass will be celebrated Tuesday for Catherine M. Burdick, 3388 Hubbard-West Middlesex Road, Shenango Township. She died at 3 p.m. Friday, May 31, 2002, in UPMC Horizon, Farrell, after a brief illness. She was 67.

Mrs. Burdick was born Aug. 11, 1934, in Farrell to Gueseppi Mercurio and Victoria DeMaria Mercurio.

She was a graduate of Farrell High School in the 1950 era and retired in October of 1997 after 37½ years from UPMC Horizon, Farrell, where she was head cook.

Mrs. Burdick was a lifelong member of Our Lady of Fatima Church, Farrell, where she volunteered for the church fish fry.

She loved to play bingo and was a sports enthusiast.

Mrs. Burdick enjoyed cooking and spending time with her family.

Her husband, David A. Burdick Sr., whom she married on May 19, 1956, died Sept. 15, 1997.

Surviving are: two sons, David A. Burdick Jr. and his wife Carrie, West Middlesex; and Mark J. Burdick and his wife Beth, Sharon; five sisters, Louise Sagenich; and Gloria Marinovich and her husband Thomas, all Florida; Adeline Guerino and her husband Guy, Hermitage; Barbara Greenfield, Canal Fulton, Ohio; and Donna Kovach and her husband Jeffrey, Sharpsville; two brothers, Louis Mercurio and his wife Genevieve; and James Mercurio and his wife Eileen, all Florida; and 10 grandchildren.

Besides her husband, Mrs. Burdick was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Joseph Mercurio; and one sister, Edith Galarde.

John Solomon

Former steelworker retired as water treatment operator

CAMPBELL, Ohio -- John Solomon of 290 Penhale Ave., Campbell, passed away Thursday, May 30, 2002. He was 67.

Mr. Solomon was born Aug. 12, 1934, in Weirton, W.Va., a son of Kaid and Helen Alice Byers Solomon.

He moved to this area in 1957.

Mr. Solomon worked as a water treatment operator and retired from Republic Steel (LTV) and WCI Steel on Aug. 31, 1998, after 30 years of service.

He was a member of The Heavenly Place Church of God in Christ, Youngstown, and also belonged to Local 1375 of United Steelworkers of America.

Mr. Solomon leaves to cherish his memory: his loving and devoted wife, the former Odessa Anderson; two daughters, Linda and LaJena Solomon, both Youngstown; six stepsons, Charles, Dennis and Johnnie B. Thomas, all Youngstown; and Darrel L., Henry and Timmy Thomas, all New Castle; two stepdaughters, Christine Armstrong and Rene Thomas, both Washington, D.C; one sister, Emily Solomon, Campbell; one brother, Benjamin McCardle, Colonial Manor, Liberty Township, Trumbull County; and a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Mr. Solomon was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Lenoza Solomon; one brother, Kaid Solomon; one sister, Mary Batdore; and a stepson, Donald Thomas.

Paul S. Ghirardi

Delphi Packard retiree was member of St. Bernadette's

Paul S. Ghirardi of 920 Crestwood Drive NE, Brookfield, died from cancer at 12:15 a.m. Saturday (6-1-02) in the hospital of Sharon Regional Health System. He was 58.

Mr. Ghirardi was born Sept. 21, 1943, in Sharon, a son of Oscar and Emma Salae Ghirardi.

A 1961 alumnus of Sharon High School, Paul worked for Delphi Packard Electric Systems in Warren, Ohio, where he was an engineer for 37 years. He retired in 2001.

As a member of St. Bernadette's Church in Masury, he was active as a lector and served as a volunteer for many church activities. His other memberships included the U.S. Air Force Reserves; Oldsmobile Club of America; and the Packard Bowling League.

In his spare time, Paul was a car enthusiast and enjoyed NASCAR.

Survivors include: his parents, Brookfield; three children, Colleen Ghirardi, Hubbard; Jay Michael Ghirardi, Waynesburg, Pa.; and Gregory Paul Ghirardi, Twinsburg, Ohio; one sister, Loretta Pettola, Hubbard; and one granddaughter, Rena Paul Ghirardi.
