Dorothy L. Davis
Lakeview schools cafeteria retiree was noted baker

A funeral service will be held Thursday for Dorothy L. Davis of 25 Lake St., Stoneboro. She died at 12:25 a.m. Monday (6-10-02) in UPMC Horizon, Greenville, after a period of failing health. She was 88.

Mrs. Davis was born June 10, 1914, in Kelly Station, Armstrong County, to George and Kezia Robinson Luxon.

She attended the former Stoneboro School and in her early years worked at Polk (Pa.) State School and Hospital, now known as Polk Center.

Mrs. Davis retired in 1979 after 13 years of service from the Lakeview Area School District as a food service worker.

She was a member of Stoneboro United Methodist Church and its R.T.S. (Ready to Serve) Class.

Mrs. Davis also belonged to Water Lily Rebekah Lodge 380; and Order of the Eastern Star Chapter 110, both Stoneboro; and Stoneboro Volunteer Fire Co. Ladies Auxiliary.

She loved to bake and was famous for her "Grandma Davis Cookies." Mrs. Davis loved her family and enjoyed her time with them, especially her grandchildren.

She married Henry Davis on March 12, 1931. He preceded her in death June 1, 1977.

Survivors include: one daughter, Mrs. Clarence (Joyce) Greenlee, Cortland; one son, Howard E. "Toby" Davis and his wife, Janice, Stoneboro; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Besides her husband, Mrs. Davis was preceded in death by her parents; one granddaughter, Krista Kay Davis; four sisters; and five brothers.

George H. Heile

Pymatuning Twp. man was steel company retiree, Mason

A funeral service will be held Wednesday for George H. Heile, 526 Reynolds Drive, Pymatuning Township. He died at 2:10 p.m. Sunday, June 9, 2002, in his residence. He was 70.

A lifelong resident of the area, Mr. Heile was born March 26, 1932, in Transfer to Roland Dana Heile and Margaret McGrath Heile.

He attended Transfer schools and was a 1950 graduate of Hickory High School in Hermitage. He also attended Behrend campus of Pennsylvania State University in Erie and Youngstown State University.

Mr. Heile retired in 1985 from LTV Steel, formerly Republic Steel, as a supervisor of electrical maintenance at the Warren and Niles plants, both Ohio.

He served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean conflict from 1950 to 1954, as an Electronic Technician First Class.

Mr. Heile was a member of Hillside Presbyterian Church; and Benevolent and Protective Order of the Elks Lodge 145, both Greenville; and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7599, Reynolds.

He was a member of Transfer Sportsman Club; and was a life member of Transfer Volunteer Fire Department.

Mr. Heile also belonged to Free and Accepted Masons Eureka Lodge 290, Greenville, and was a 32nd degree Mason who served with the Legion of Honor with Scottish Rites New Castle Consistory.

Surviving are: his wife, the former Mildred J. Zahniser, whom he married June 14, 1951, in what was then Hillside United Presbyterian Church in Greenville, by the Rev. Henry Millison.

He also leaves: two daughters, Mrs. Ralph E. (Debra) Jones, Greenville; and Mrs. Keith R. (Mary Margaret) Stultz, Gonzales, Texas; a sister, Martha Joanne Ferry, Greenville; one brother, John Dana Heile, Elizabethtown, Pa.; and four grandchildren, Jason and Greta Stultz; and Katie and Kristina Jones.

Mr. Heile was preceded in death by his parents.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hillside Presbyterian Church, 2 N. High St.; or the Salvation Army, 288 Main St., both Greenville 16125.

Helena Forbes

Helena Forbes, Hempfield Township, died at 3:53 a.m. today (6-11-02) in White-Cliff Nursing Home, Hempfield Township. She was 93.

Sarah Lee Yassall

'65 BHS grad was secretary, had worked at Valley View

Sarah Lee Yassall of 7101 Sunnydell Drive, Brookfield, died at 12:30 a.m. Monday (6-10-02) in her residence. She was 55.

Mrs. Yassall was born Jan. 31, 1947, in Sykesville, Pa., a daughter of Morgan and Dorothy M. Null Valimont.

A 1965 graduate of Brookfield High School, Mrs. Yassall was a medical secretary and had also been employed at Valley View Department Store, Brookfield.

Her memberships included Church of the Sacred Heart, Sharon.

She loved playing cards; the Pittsburgh Steelers; and spending time with her family and friends, especially her nieces, Morgan and Madison.

Her husband, Dr. Herman S. Yassall, whom she married Oct. 30, 1979, survives at home.

Other survivors include: one daughter, Danielle Lynn "Bucky" Yassall, Houston; one sister, Trudy Terchila, Masury; two brothers, Daniel Valimont, Champion, Ohio; and Thomas Valimont, Brookfield; 20 nieces and nephews; 29 great-nieces and -nephews; one great-great-niece; and one great-great-nephew.

Mrs. Yassall was preceded in death by her parents; and one sister, Donna "Beulah" White.

Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.

Arthur S. Goldstone

Ex-owner of furniture stores was active in community

Arthur S. Goldstone of 496 Lillian Drive in Sharon passed away peacefully at 5:05 p.m. Monday (6-10-02) in his residence following an extended illness. He was 69.

Mr. Goldstone was born April 15, 1933, in Connellsville, Fayette County, a son of Rudolph and Sadye Goldstein Goldstone.

Mr. Goldstone was the former owner and operator and current chairman of the board of Goldstein's Furniture Co., which operates several locations in eastern Ohio and western Pennsylvania.

He was a member of Temple Beth Israel in Sharon, where he served as a past treasurer.

Mr. Goldstone was an alumnus of Sharon High School Class of 1951 and graduated from Pennsylvania State University in State College, where he earned a bachelor's degree in business with an emphasis on insurance. During his undergraduate studies at Penn State, he was a member and president of the Sigma Alpha Mu fraternity as well as the honorary business fraternity, Delta Sigma Pi.

Mr. Goldstone was an active member of the community and served on several boards including the Strimbu Memorial Fund, Salvation Army, Shenango Valley Industrial Development Corp. and Penn State Shenango Campus Advisory Board. He was one of the founders of the Greater Sharon Associates, where he was a past president.

Mr. Goldstone worked closely with the Shenango Valley Chamber of Commerce and in the 1990s was a contributing member of the chamber's new board room.

A U.S. Army veteran, he was stationed in Italy where he worked as a cryptographer.

Mr. Goldstone enjoyed golfing and spending time with his family. He was a member of Sharon Country Club; and Sharon Social Fishing Club, Lake Muskoka, Canada.

His wife, the former Roberta "Bobbie" L. Nashbar, whom he married March 22, 1959, survives at home.

He also leaves: his two daughters, Robyn L. Goldstone, Shadyside area of Pittsburgh; Wendy Szalay and her husband Alex, Sharon; and his son, Steven M. Goldstone and his wife Cheryl L., Sharpsville.

Also surviving are two grandchildren, Sarah and Sam Szalay.

Mr. Goldstone was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Myron Goldstone; and an infant daughter.

Mildred 'Millie' Stanovich

Longtime waitress belonged to Serbian group in Farrell

Mildred "Millie" Stanovich, 512 Beechwood Ave., Farrell, died of natural causes at 9:05 a.m. Monday, June 10, 2002, in the hospital of Sharon Regional Health System after an extended illness. She was 84.

Miss Stanovich was born May 13, 1918, in Farrell to Nicholas Stanovich and Evelyn Oreschan Stanovich.

She was a waitress for 33 years at the former Eagles Grille in Farrell. She was also employed during World War II at the former ordnance plant in Farrell.

Mildred was a member of the Serbian National Federation No. 68 in Farrell.

She was an animal lover, liked to travel with local bus tours and loved to shop.

Mildred was of the Orthodox faith.

Surviving are: two brothers, Sam Stanovich, Farrell; and Louis Stanovich, husband of Marlene, Hubbard; two sisters, Mary Koehli, Hubbard; and Martha Beader, Farrell; two nephews, Keith and Peter Stanovich; and two nieces, Cindy and Nancy Stanovich; a sister-in-law, Betty Stanovich; and several great-nephews and -nieces.

Mildred was preceded in death by her parents; and three brothers, Peter, Michael and George Stanovich.

Jacqueline 'Jackie' L. Singletary

'66 Farrell High grad lived in Bronx, had relatives here

BRONX, N.Y. -- Jacqueline "Jackie" L. Singletary, 875 Boynton Ave. in Bronx, passed away at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, June 1, 2002, in her home after an extended illness. She was 54.

Miss Singletary was born June 14, 1947, in Farrell to Edythe Singletary.

Jackie was raised by her grandparents, the Rev. and Mrs. Oscar Singletary, both of whom are now deceased.

She graduated from Farrell High School in 1966 and moved to Bronx in 1971, where she attended Bronx Community College. She was employed by the administrative offices of Mount Sinai Hospital, Bronx, for a number of years.

Jackie was known for her culinary skills and took pleasure in preparing dinners and desserts for family and friends.

She was a fun-loving, kind-hearted person who went out of her way to help others. She was well-known in the community where she lived.

Jackie was a member of St. John Baptist Church, Bronx; and a former member of Friendship Baptist Church in Farrell, where she sang in the church choir and was active in youth groups.

She leaves to mourn and cherish fond memories: a loving mother, Edythe Lyons, Bronx; two aunts, Helen Mitchell, Farrell; and Carlotta Booker, Richmond, Va.; several cousins, Denise Cooper, Cleveland; Gail Mitchell-Matthews, Buffalo, N.Y.; Beverly Thornton, Chantilly, Va.; Teri Batch, Los Angeles; James Mitchell Jr., Okemos, Mich.; Kevin Mitchell, Farrell; Royal Booker Jr., Richmond; Charlotte Pegues, Hermitage; Latisha Williams, also Hermitage; Arnett Williams, Farrell; and a host of other relatives and friends who will miss her dearly.

A funeral service was held at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, June 6, 2002, in Bronx, with the Rev. John L. Scott, pastor of St. John Baptist Church, Bronx, officiating.


Margaret D'Angelo
Homemaker formerly of Masury had son in Farrell

LANCASTER, Pa. -- Margaret D'Angelo of 126 Pinnacle Point Drive, Lancaster, formerly of Masury, died at 10:15 a.m. Saturday (6-8-02) in her residence. She was 91.

Mrs. D'Angelo was born July 20, 1910, in United, Pa., a daughter of Endi G. and Julia Telepak Kohut.

Mrs. D'Angelo was a homemaker.

Her memberships included St. Bernadette's Church, Masury; and St. Richards Catholic Church, Manheim, Pa.

Her husband, Gabriel D'Angelo, whom she married Aug. 10, 1940, died April 15, 1983.

Survivors include: one son, Gabriel D'Angelo Jr., Farrell; one daughter, Bernadette D'Angelo, Lancaster, with whom she made her home; one sister, Veronica Sikon, Pittsburgh; two brothers, Joseph Kohut, Vicenza, Italy; and Michael Kohut, New Jersey; and five grandchildren.

Besides her husband, Mrs. D'Angelo was preceded in death by her parents; a grandson, Kevin D'Angelo; three brothers, Steve Kohut, Andrew Kohut and John Kohut; and four sisters, Anna Payich, Mary Amico, Bertha Scarmack and Elizabeth Ciccone.

Lawrence R. Palanti

Westinghouse retiree was Fatima church member

Lawrence R. Palanti, 940 Emerson Ave., Farrell, died of natural causes at 3:05 p.m. Sunday, June 9, 2002, in UPMC Horizon, Greenville. He was 86.

Mr. Palanti was born Dec. 24, 1915, in Farrell to Anthony Palanti and Rose Necaster Palanti.

He retired in 1981 after 36 years as a machinist for the former Sharon Transformer Division of Westinghouse Electric Corp.

Mr. Palanti was a member of Our Lady of Fatima Church, Farrell.

He was an avid horse racing fan and enjoyed carpentry.

Surviving are: his wife, the former Aurelia M. Dragomire, whom he married Oct. 10, 1942, at home; a son, Lawrence Palanti Jr., Westminster, Md.; a daughter, Lorraine Guerino, wife of James, Farrell; and five grandchildren, Gianna, Jason, Justin, Jordan and John-Michael Guerino.

Mr. Palanti was preceded in death by his parents; five brothers, Anthony, Carmen, Nunzio, Joseph and William Palanti; and two sisters, Jennie Nicastro and Angeline Salerno.
