ERNST Harry Stephen Stitt Sr. WWII pilot, Mason helped found family businesses Harry Stephen Stitt Sr., a resident of Grove City since 1976, of 1194 Barkeyville Road, Pine Township, passed away at 4 p.m. Wednesday, June 12, 2002, in United Community Hospital, Pine Township, after a brief illness. He was 80. Mr. Stitt was born Feb. 15, 1922, in Ford City, Pa., a son of the Rev. Oscar Heilman Stitt and Sarah Margaret Drury Stitt. He was a graduate of Butler High School. He proudly served his country as an officer in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. As a pilot of a B-29 in the 505th Bombardment Group stationed on Tinian Island in the Pacific, he flew 24 missions over Japan. After the war, he founded two family businesses with his brothers, including Stitt Motors and J.W. Stitt Furniture Inc., which thrived for decades in New Brighton. He recently received his 50-year service award and was a lifetime member of the Free and Accepted Masons Blue Lodge 272 in Butler; and Scottish Rites New Castle Consistory. Of the Presbyterian faith, he attended Scotch Hill Presbyterian Church in Pine Township. For many years, he was a member of the United Presbyterian Church of Prospect, where he and his wife, Mary Catherine Roth Stitt, reared their family of four children. He is remembered as a loving, selfless patriarch, a man with an iron work ethic, steadfast morals, a witty sense of humor and a talent for music who always provided for his family and cared deeply for his friends. His positive example as a husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, patriot and friend shines on through all of those whose lives he so profoundly touched. He will be truly and deeply missed. Yet, his family takes comfort that, as a Republican president he admired once said, this old pilot has "slipped the surly bonds of earth" to "touch the face of God." He was, and always will remain, a hero's hero. He is survived by: his wife of 60 years, Mary C. Stitt, at home; daughter and son-in-law Charlotte S. and Eugene Walters, Orwigsburg, Pa.; son Harry S. Stitt Jr., Grove City; daughter and son-in-law, Cheryl S. and Carl Simpson, Union, Mo.; and daughter and son-in-law, Carolyn S. and Bret Adams, Emlenton.
