George 'G.G.' Gula Retired letter carrier enjoyed time with family, friends A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Wednesday for George "G.G." Gula, 662 Sherman Ave., Sharon, and current resident of John XXIII Home, Hermitage. He departed this life at 10:12 a.m. Saturday, June 15, 2002, in the hospital of Sharon Regional Health System. He was 89. Mr. Gula was born Jan. 27, 1913, in Sharon, to Demitrus "Metro" Gula and Paraska Panick Gula. He was a member of St. Stanislaus Kostka Church, Sharon. A veteran of World War II, he served in the U.S. Army and was stationed in England with the Medical Corps. Before entering military service, Mr. Gula was employed in the Warehouse Division of the former Golden Dawn Food Co. After his wartime service, he began his career with the U.S. Postal Service in 1946 as a letter carrier in the City of Sharon. He retired in 1978 with 32 years of service and was an active member of the National Association of Letter Carriers, Branch 113. Mr. Gula remained active in the NALC and until recently, made every effort to attend its regular meetings and functions. He was recognized by the organization, being presented a life membership for more than 50 years of consecutive membership. In his youth, Mr. Gula was a boxing enthusiast and enjoyed roller skating. After his retirement from the postal service, he revived his interest in roller skating and actively participated in the sport until he was 85 years of age. Being active during his retirement, he also began working for Oakwood Cemetery Association in Sharon as a groundskeeper. After 10 years, he finally retired in 1988. Walks and attending summer concerts in Buhl Park with his beloved wife, Bridie, were favorite pastimes. He and his wife were also actively involved with the elderly and visited their many friends and acquaintances as long as they were physically able. Mr. Gula enjoyed time with his family and was always open to conversations with friends and strangers alike. His wife, Bridget "Bridie" Browne Gula, whom he married July 7, 1945, in the Oratory of the Sacred Heart, Richmond Hill, Bournemouth, England, survives at home. Also surviving are: one son, Joseph M. Gula and his wife, Michaelene "Mickey," Greenville; one daughter, Annette L. Gula and her husband, Frank Marrie, Austin, Texas; one sister, Mrs. Charles "Bill" (Helen) Karr, Howland, Ohio; and two grandchildren, Emily and Benjamin Gula. Mr. Gula was preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers, Steve and Peter Gula. GULA Gilbert S. Denman Hartford businessman was farmer, builder, developer Gilbert S. Denman, 6157 Orangeville Road, Hartford, died at 3:35 p.m. Saturday, June 15, 2002, in St. Joseph Health Center, Warren, Ohio. He was 82. Mr. Denman was born Aug. 3, 1919, in Johnston, Ohio, to Thomas A. Denman and Susie Bonar Denman. He was co-owner of Cortland (Ohio) Hardwood Products Ltd. for the past five years and previously was owner of Tri-Cash and Carry Lumber, also Cortland. Mr. Denman was also a self-employed farmer, builder and real estate developer. His wife, the former Louise Battison, whom he married June 21, 1939, died Aug. 4, 1998. Surviving are: one daughter, Mrs. John (Janet) Jewett, Hartford; one granddaughter, Deborah Colley, Sharpsville; and one grandson, Jeff Jewett, Hartford. Mr. Denman was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters and six brothers. Memorial contributions may be made to Orangeville United Methodist Church, care of Box 67, Orangeville, Ohio 44453.
DENMAN Richard L. Hinds Navy veteran was Cooper Energy retiree, avid hunter Richard L. Hinds, 21 S. Foster Road, Findley Township, died at 6 p.m. Sunday, June 16, 2002, in IHS home, Erie, after a six-month illness. He was 60. Mr. Hinds was born Feb. 5, 1942, in Pine Township to Floyd Hinds and Nina Rodgers Hinds. He retired from the former Cooper Energy Services Reciprocating Products in Grove City, where he was a maintenance man for 36 years. Mr. Hinds was a member of the Church of God, Barkeyville. He was a veteran with the U.S. Navy and was an avid hunter. Surviving are: his wife, the former H. Jane McConnell, whom he married Aug. 28, 1965, at home; two sons, Michael W. Hinds and Brian R. Hinds, both Mercer; one half-sister, Mrs. Frank (Barbara) Oiler, Avella, Pa.; and four half-brothers, Joe Hinds and his wife Bonnie, Maryville, Tenn.; Terry Fleming and his wife, Sharon; and Phillip Fleming and his wife, Debbie, all Grove City; and Van Fleming, California. Mr. Hinds was preceded in death by his parents and one half-brother, Sam Hinds.
HINDS Lillian Burford Rutter Greenville homemaker was member of Zion's U.C.C. Lillian Burford Rutter, 58 Ridge Ave., Greenville, passed away at 9:49 p.m. Saturday, June 15, 2002, in her home following an extended illness. She was 87. Mrs. Rutter was born Feb. 12, 1915, in Gustavus, Ohio, to George F. and Edna Crooks Burford. She was a graduate of Kinsman High School and Kent State University, both Ohio. Mrs. Rutter served as a teacher in the Dorset (Ohio) School System, but was a homemaker for most of her life. She was a member of Zion's Reformed United Church of Christ, Greenville. Her husband, Paul Rutter, whom he married on Aug. 13, 1938, died Nov. 23, 2000. Surviving are: one son, Frederick Rutter; and one daughter, Joanna Johnson, both Greenville; one brother, Richard "Beryl" Burford, Jamestown; one sister, Sarah Cassidy, Youngstown; one granddaughter, Kelly Hayes of Greenville, whom Lillian and her husband helped raise; and two great-grandsons, Shane and Jeremy. Besides her husband, Mrs. Rutter was preceded in death by her parents; four brothers; and four sisters.
RUTTER John J. Zappa Farrell native served as Tomb of Unknown Soldier guard OTIS, Oregon -- John J. Zappa of Otis, formerly of Farrell, passed away Monday evening, June 10, 2002, in a hospital near Otis. He was 79. Born Jan. 30, 1923, in Farrell, Mr. Zappa was a son of Joseph and Elizabeth DeMartinis Zappa. A graduate of Farrell High School Class of 1941, he enlisted in the Army in 1941, serving until 1945 in various capacities including as a military policeman in Arlington, Va., and later, overseas in the Philippines. He also served at one time as a guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Arlington. Mr. Zappa was a charter member and post commander in 1947 of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5286 in Farrell. He is survived by: his wife, the former Faye Liberty, whom he married in Cupertino, Calif., at home; his daughter, Lisa Hoff; his son-in-law, Rick, and grandson, Joram, all Otis; and a son, Joseph Zappa. Other survivors include: three sisters, Marie Zappa, Sharon; Tina Orrico, New Castle; and Rose Pendel, Farrell; and a brother, Carl Zappa, Hermitage. Mr. Zappa was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Leonilda Zappa Kahl and Philomena "Phil" Zappa Barretta; and three brothers, Felix, Clyde and Leo Zappa. A memorial Mass will be celebrated at noon Wednesday, June 19, 2002, in Our Lady of Fatima Church, Farrell, with the Rev. Donald E. Berdis, pastor, as celebrant. Howard I. Causer Transfer man worked for Westinghouse, was Mason Howard I. Causer, formerly of Transfer, died at 7:05 p.m. Saturday, June 15, 2002, in White-Cliff Nursing Home, Hempfield Township. He was 84. Born Feb. 9, 1918, in Clay Township, Euclid, Pa., Mr. Causer was a son of the late Isaiah Kermit Causer and Jessie Mae Gibb Causer. Mr. Causer was an Army veteran of World War II. He had worked as a sheet metal worker for Westinghouse Electric Corp. for more than 31 years. Mr. Causer was a member of Greencrest Park Community Baptist Church, Reynolds; Free and Accepted Masons Lodge 250, Sharon; and Scottish Rites New Castle Consistory. Surviving are: his wife, the former Agnes Marie Hamilton, whom he married Feb. 9, 1934, White-Cliff Nursing Home; and several nieces and nephews. Preceding Mr. Causer in death were his three half-brothers and seven half-sisters.
CAUSER Helen M. Clingerman Lifelong area homemaker worked at area bakeries Helen M. Clingerman of 1204 Broadway Ave. SE, Masury, and formerly of Patt Drive, Farrell, and McMinn Road, Clark, passed away peacefully at 9:20 p.m. Saturday, June 15, 2002, in her residence. She was 80. Born Nov. 5, 1921, in Farrell, Mrs. Clingerman was a daughter of the late Joseph and Elizabeth Kozan Korab. She attended schools in Farrell and was a lifelong area resident. At one time, she was a baker at Metz Bakery, Farrell, and Tastee Bakery, Sharon. A homemaker, Mrs. Clingerman enjoyed crocheting and was a former member of Church of the Sacred Heart, Sharon. Earlier in life, she enjoyed bowling and was a member of a former bowling league. Mrs. Clingerman also enjoyed keeping touch with her family in Poland and Canada through mail correspondence. Her first husband, James L. Patterson, was killed in action during World War II on Nov. 20, 1944. Her second husband, Victor L. Clingerman, whom she married Nov. 16, 1946, preceded her in death on March 6, 1993. Survivors include: one son, James L. Patterson and his wife, Barbara, Meriden, Conn.; three sisters, Jennie Wansor, Sharon; Alice Mosley, Farrell; and Mrs. Nick (Sophie) Kucik, Farrell; one brother, Edward Korab, Mercer; three grandchildren, Judith Lockrow and her husband, David; Lisa Strong and her husband, John; and Michael Patterson and his wife, Brenda; six great-grandchildren, Todd Patterson, Kevin Lockrow, Karista and Jessica Strong; and Amanda and Michael Patterson; one great-great-granddaughter, Brianne Patterson; and several nieces and nephews, including Donna Hansen, with whom she made her home. In addition to her parents and her first and second husbands, Mrs. Clingerman was preceded in death by one sister, Valeria Hook; and two brothers, Walter and Edmund Korab.
