Doris A. DuMars Ex-Sharon woman retired as WE executive secretary Doris A. DuMars of 1642 Cullinan Ave., Masury, formerly of Sharon, died at 5:45 p.m. Wednesday (7-3-02) in O'Brien Memorial Nursing Home, Masury. She was 90. Mrs. DuMars was born March 27, 1912, in Sharon, a daughter of John T. and Maud E. Cartwright Walsh. She retired in 1972 as an executive secretary at the former Sharon Transformer Division of Westinghouse Electric Corp., where she had worked for 36 years. Mrs. DuMars was a member of First Baptist Church in Sharon. Her husband, Percy C. DuMars, whom she married Nov. 16, 1973, died April 5, 1994. Survivors include: four stepsons, Roger DuMars, Alabama; Mark DuMars, Pittsburgh; Peter DuMars, West Middlesex; and Michael DuMars, also Alabama; two nieces, Marilyn Waller, Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio; and Donna Reynolds, North Jackson, Ohio; and one nephew, Robert Lloyd, Massachusetts. Besides her husband, Mrs. DuMars was preceded in death by her parents; and two sisters, Catherine Sowers and Elsie Chantrey. Memorial contributions may be made to First Baptist Church, 301 W. DuMARS Melvina Jeane McGranahan Greenville woman belonged to Eastern Star, White Shrine A funeral and committal service will be held Sunday for Melvina Jeane McGranahan, 9 Penn Ave., Greenville, formerly of State College, Pa. She died at 5:10 p.m. Wednesday, July 3, 2002, in the emergency room of UPMC Horizon, Greenville. She was 74. Miss McGranahan was born Sept. 28, 1927, in Greenville to Harry McGranahan and Elizabeth Williamson McGranahan. A 1948 graduate of the former Penn High School in Greenville, she was employed as an inspector for 23 years at Murta Erie of State College, retiring in 1992. Miss McGranahan was a former member during her youth of Hillside Presbyterian Church in Greenville. She was a member of Order of the Eastern Star Chapter 63; and Order of the White Shrine of Jerusalem Shrine 47, both Greenville; the Young Democrats of Snowshoe, Pa.; and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9579, Portersville. Surviving are: a sister, Grace Owen, Fayette, Iowa; and nine nieces and two nephews. Miss McGranahan was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Clyde and Albert McGranahan; and one sister, Arvildia Sarah Alabran. McGRANAHAN 2nd Lt. Zachariah 'Zac' R. Miller West Point grad, active in church, was Rhodes Scholar FORT BENNING, Ga. -- 2nd Lt. Zachariah "Zac" R. Miller of Stoneboro, was found dead at 8 p.m. Monday, July 1, 2002, while on a land navigation exercise in Fort Benning. He was 22. Zac was born June 19, 1980, in Franklin to Keith R. and Rosalyn A. Walker Miller. A 1998 graduate of Lakeview High School, he was valedictorian of his class and served as Student Council president. He was active in the concert band and captained the football, basketball and track teams. He attended Grove City College as a special student, beginning at the age of 13, and was also selected to attend the Pennsylvania Governor's School for the Sciences in 1997. He was always community-oriented and, in high school, served as chairman for the Lakeview Chapter of Shenango Valley Foundation's "Students for Charity." At West Point, he was a volunteer for Special Olympics and the Big Brothers/Big Sisters Program. He was a member of Sandy Lake Presbyterian Church, where he served as assistant Sunday school superintendent, a youth group leader and a member of the youth group. An honors graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point, he received his diploma on June 1 from President George W. Bush. He earned a bachelor of science degree in mathematics and computer science and was named West Point's top graduate in math, computer science and the basic sciences. At graduation, he was also commissioned as a second lieutenant in the United States Army and branched Infantry. In addition, he served as secretary for West Point's Bicentennial Class of 2002; was captain of the Army rugby team; and received this year's Rugby Scholar/Athlete Award. During the summer of 2000, he graduated from the U.S. Army Airborne School in Fort Benning, and also served as a platoon leader for an Air Defense Artillery unit in Wackernheim, Germany. Last summer he completed an internship in Baku, Azerbaijan, where he worked with refugee children and counseled local citizens concerning human-rights abuses. He was selected as a Truman Scholar in 2001 and this past December was named a Rhodes Scholar. He was scheduled to leave in October for Oxford University in England, where he was to study politics, philosophy and economics. He believed in living life to its fullest and always excelled at doing his best. He enjoyed traveling, reading and sports, especially rugby. He wanted to make a difference in this world and hoped to make it a better place. He is survived at home by his parents and his brother, Nathaniel, a senior at Lakeview High School. Also surviving are his paternal grandparents, Robert C. and Mary J. Miller, Hermitage. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Roy R. and Mary L. Walker. MILLER Margaret B. Barany Nagy Holy Trinity member was retired Sharon school janitor Margaret B. Barany Nagy, 1 Cathedral Drive, Farrell, formerly of Sharon, died of natural causes at 10 a.m. Thursday, July 4, 2002, in Life Care Hospital, Pittsburgh. He was 73. Mrs. Nagy was born Aug. 28, 1928, in Niles, Ohio, to Frank Barany and Julianna Gyorky Barany. She was a graduate of Sharon High School Class of 1939 and retired in 1983 from Sharon Area School District, where she worked in the custodial department. She was a homemaker. As a member of Holy Trinity Church in Farrell, Mrs. Nagy belonged to Holy Trinity Mothers Club; and the church Altar-Rosary Society. Her husband, Joseph A. Nagy, whom she married March 2, 1946, died June 28, 1986. Surviving are: two daughters, Suzanne Aszalos, New Castle; and Mary Beth Jaquay, wife of Richard, Upper St. Clair; a son, Frank A. Nagy, Scottsdale, Ariz.; two grandsons, Paul Aszalos, husband of Renee; and Joseph Jaquay; six granddaughters, Jennifer Aszalos; Kristen Pavkovich, wife of Dwight; Julianna Beasley, wife of David; and Sarah Jaquay, Emily Jaquay and Rebeccah Jaquay; and two great-grandsons, Zachary and Nathaniel Aszalos. Besides her husband, Mrs. Nagy was preceded in death by her parents.
NAGY Ruth Esma Shaffer Ex-Sandy Lake homemaker had also lived in Butler CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Ruth Esma Shaffer, Charlotte, formerly of Sandy Lake; Bradenton, Fla.; and Butler, died at 7:15 a.m. Wednesday (7-3-02) in Presbyterian Wesley Care Center. She was 94. Mrs. Shaffer as born Aug. 25, 1907, in Windber, Somerset County, to Harry Raymond Lydick and Mary Louise Keim Lydick. A homemaker, she was a member of First United Methodist Church in Butler, and was a former Sunday school teacher prior to becoming a member of that church. Her husband, Harold William Shaffer, whom she married Aug. 11, 1927, died Thursday, Dec. 23, 1993. Surviving are: three sons, the Rev. Roger R. Shaffer, Charlotte; Richard K. Shaffer, Dillsburg, Pa.; and Jack H. Shaffer, Harrodsburg, Ky.; seven grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren. Besides her husband, Mrs. Shaffer was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers and two sisters. The family requests that memorial donations be made to First United Methodist Church, 200 E. North St., Butler 16001.
