George Oakley Davis Hermitage man co-founded Davis Insurance Agency George O. Davis of 1959 Valley View Road, Hermitage, passed away unexpectedly at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, July 6, 2002, in the emergency room of Sharon Regional Health System. He was 86. Mr. Davis was born May 18, 1916, in Sharon, a son of Frank F. and May I. Ley Davis. George was a graduate of Sharon High School Class of 1934. He earned his bachelor's degree from Bethany College, West Virginia, in 1938. He also attended Dickinson Law School in Carlisle, Pa. He was a veteran of World War II, having served with the U.S. Army in the Philippines as a first lieutenant. George had been vice-president of Davis Coal & Supply in Sharon and later formed with his brother, Frank L. Davis, Davis Insurance Agency in Sharon. He owned and operated the agency for 35 years until his retirement in 1981. He was a former member of St. John's Episcopal Church in Sharon and was a current member of Hickory United Methodist Church in Hermitage. A 32nd degree Mason, he belonged to Free and Accepted Masons Shenango Lodge 668; and Scottish Rites New Castle Consistory. He also belonged to American Legion Post 299, Sharon; and Veterans of Foreign Wars Hickory Post 6166 in Hermitage. An outdoorsman, he loved both golfing and hunting and was a member of Sigel (Pa.) Sportsman Club; and the Hidden Valley Sportsmen's Club in Shenango Township. His first wife, the former Elizabeth Mae Carnes, whom he married on Jan. 16, 1953, passed away on July 26, 1967. Surviving at home is his second wife, the former Ruth Shindledecker, whom he married on June 14, 1974. Also surviving are: three children, Mrs. Timothy (Linda) Paris, Scottsdale, Ariz.; Tod O. Davis and his wife Lori, Hermitage; and Jed E. Davis and his wife Bridget, Hermitage; three stepchildren, Neil A. Shindledecker and his wife Libby, DuBois, Pa.; Mrs. Lee (Janet) Buxton, Hermitage; and Lynn R. Shindledecker, also Hermitage. Also surviving are: a stepbrother, Joseph Franko, Jamestown; and a stepsister, Violet Cheeks, Farrell. He will be sadly missed by his 10 grandchildren. Besides his first wife, Elizabeth, George was preceded in death by his parents; and his brother, Frank L. Davis.
DAVIS Curtis E. Melvin Former Shenango Inc. employee served in WWII VERNON TOWNSHIP, TRUMBULL COUNTY -- Curtis E. Melvin, 7281 Jewell North Road, Vernon, died Saturday morning, July 6, 2002, in his residence. He was 76. Mr. Melvin was born Feb. 24, 1926, in Vernon to Lloyd Melvin and Belle Hobart Melvin. A lifelong area resident, Mr. Melvin was a 1944 graduate of Vernon High School. He worked for the former Shenango Inc. of Sharpsville for 38 years, retiring in 1986. Mr. Melvin married Shirley G. Snyder on Dec. 6, 1946. He served with the U.S. Air Force in the 873rd Bomb Squadron during World War II. Mr. Melvin was a member of Vernon United Methodist Church; Free and Accepted Masons Gustavus Lodge 442; Inland Lake Sportsman Club of Kinsman; and the A.A. Scottish Rite of Youngstown. He served as a trustee for Vernon Township for 10 years and enjoyed history, reading, hunting, fishing and gardening. Surviving are: his wife, Shirley, at home; two daughters, Diane D. Rogers, wife of Ronald, Vernon; and Marilyn M. Travis, wife of Merle, Leetonia, Ohio; two brothers, Lawrence L. Melvin, Kinsman; and Lloyd Melvin Jr., Edgewater, Fla.; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Mr. Melvin was preceded in death by his father; his mother, Belle Melvin-Jefferson; a brother, Hobart Melvin; and his stepfather, Dr. Joseph Jefferson. MELVIN Dorothy Jane Stewart Former Sharon woman had worked at Zimmer Jewelers Dorothy Jane Stewart of 349 Buena Vista Ave., Vienna, formerly of Sharon, died Saturday (7-6-02) in her residence following an extended illness. She was 82. Mrs. Stewart was born July 18, 1919, in Sharon, a daughter of Raymond and Marian Collins Rigby. She was a high school graduate and a member of Believer's Christian Fellowship of Warren, Ohio. Mrs. Stewart had been employed for many years at the former Zimmer Jewelers in Sharon and also had worked at General American Transportation Corp.'s former Masury plant. She is survived by: her husband, Richard "Dick" L. Stewart, whom she married May 29, 1942. Mrs. Stewart is also survived by: a son, Robert R. Stewart, Masury; and a daughter, Toni A. Luchette, with whom she made her home; four grandchildren; and two brothers, Robert Rigby, Conneautville, Pa.; and Charles Rigby, Joaquin, Texas. She was preceded in death by her parents.
