Eunice H. Poole Homemaker was longtime Shenango Valley resident Eunice H. Poole, 1330 Kimberly Road, Sharon, formerly of Farrell, passed away at 10:30 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 7, 2002, in the hospital of Sharon Regional Health System. She was 85. Mrs. Poole was born April 12, 1917, in Georgia. She was a homemaker and lived in the Shenango Valley since 1942. Her husband, Willie Poole, died June 18, 1969. Mrs. Poole's only survivors are her caregivers, Robert and Dorothy Townsend of Farrell. Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents.
POOLE Florence Adaline Bender Coolspring Twp. woman was avid traveler, homemaker Florence Adaline Bender, Coolspring Township, formerly of East Water Street, Slippery Rock, and Jamestown, N.Y., died Thursday, Aug. 8, 2002, in Woodland Place, Coolspring Township, after a short illness. She was 96. Mrs. Bender was born Aug. 19, 1905, in Jamestown to Robert Leslie Stanton and Laura "Doll" Luella Gordon Stanton. As a member for more than 50 years of Stillwater United Methodist Church in Jamestown, she had previously been an active member of the church choir; and belonged to the Sacajawea Sunday School Class and the church United Methodist Women. She had formerly been active in the 4Bs square dancing group; and the Senior Citizens Bowling Group, both Jamestown. She was a former member of the Board of Elections in Kiantone, N.Y. A homemaker, she was an avid traveler and twice visited the Holy Lands, having been baptized in the River Jordan. Her husband, Clifford Lewis Bender, whom she married Nov. 15, 1927, died Oct. 22, 1970. Surviving are: two daughters, Mrs. Theodore (Barbara) Walwik, Slippery Rock; and Elaine Linder, Mercer; one son, C. Earl Bender, Medina, Ohio; one sister, Ruby Brady, Randolph, N.Y.; 15 grandchildren; and 24 great-grandchildren. Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; one son, Leslie Bender; an infant daughter, Alicia Claire; four brothers, William "Will" Stanton; and Floyd, Robert and Charles Stanton; and five sisters, Luella Olsen, Iva Livermore, Evelyn Furteck, Margaret Valle and Ruth Stanton.
BENDER Anzelma Rose Habermann Novak Family business co-owner was Holy Trinity member Anzelma Rose Habermann Novak, formerly of Lakewood-Neshannock Falls Road, New Castle, died at 3:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 8, 2002, in Shenango Presbyterian Home, New Wilmington. She was 98. Mrs. Novak was born April 21, 1904, in Brassov, Romania, to Karl Habermann and Rosalia Agoston Habermann. She immigrated to the United States in 1950. Mrs. Novak, along with her husband, owned the East Side Bakery in Sharon. They also operated Novak's Catering Service, Novak's Cooking School and Novak's Tea Room, all located in Sharon. She was an active member of Holy Trinity Church in Farrell and attended St. Vitus Church in New Castle. Her husband, John Charles Novak, whom she married May 20, 1930, died Oct. 17, 1975. Surviving are: her daughter, Margaret E. Egetoe, New Castle; two sons, John C. Novak, Bellingham, Wash.; and Zoltan E. Novak, New Castle; a brother, Karl Habermann, Lindau, Germany; five grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. Besides her husband, Mrs. Novak was preceded in death by her parents. NOVAK Harold E. Davis Sr. Sharon Steel retiree liked horses, ponies Harold E. Davis Sr., 798 Clarksville Road, Coolspring Township, died at 1:05 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 8, 2002, in UPMC Horizon, Greenville, following an extended illness. He was 74. Mr. Davis was born June 28, 1928, in Leesburg to Lawrence B. Davis and Mary Ann Hanna Davis. He retired as a laborer in 1976 from the former Sharon Steel Corp.'s former Farrell plant. Mr. Davis was of the Protestant faith. An avid horse lover, in the past he exhibited ponies at The Great Stoneboro Fair. Surviving are: his wife, the former Lila Jean Reynolds, whom he married on Feb. 18, 1955, at the residence; one son, Harold "Gene" Davis Jr. and his wife Phyllis, Mercer; one sister, Mrs. Robert (Eleanor) Miller, Pittsburgh; two grandsons, Jeffery Davis and his wife Wendy; and Gregory Davis and his wife Christy; a great-grandson, Coleton Eugene; and a great-granddaughter, Samantha Leanne. Mr. Davis was preceded in death by his parents; and four brothers, Clifford, Gaylord, Alfred and Paul Davis.
DAVIS Carroll Benjamin Riffe WWII vet was General American retiree A Mass of Christian burial will be held Saturday for Carroll Benjamin Riffe, 2435 Carlisle Drive, South Pymatuning Township. He died at 2:20 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 7, 2002, in UPMC Horizon, Greenville, following an extended illness. He was 78. Mr. Riffe was born March 17, 1924, in Lindside, W.Va., to Benjamin Franklin Riffe and Virgie McGhee Riffe. He attended Shires Elementary School in Lindside, and later, Peterstown (W.Va.) High School. He worked for General American Transportation Corp.'s former Masury plant, where he was a mill operator, retiring in 1984. Mr. Riffe was also a farmer. He was a member of St. Michael's Church in Greenville; and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7599 in Reynolds. An Army veteran, he served during World War II. Mr. Riffe enjoyed farming, carpentry, reading, gardening and most of all, spending time with his grandchildren. Surviving are: his wife, the former Edna Kashmer, whom he married May 23, 1953, at home; two daughters, Mrs. Scott (Darlene) Patterson, Fredonia; and Mrs. John "Jay" (Donna) Miraszek, Erie; three sons, Carroll E. Riffe and his wife Darlene, Greenville; Thomas P. Riffe and his wife Sandra, Sharon; and Kenneth "Bud" Riffe and his wife Beverly, also Greenville; three sisters, Norma Ballard, Peterstown; Elizabeth "Suzie" Riffe, Greenville; and Betty Moore, Hermitage; three brothers, Clifford "Shorty" Riffe, Transfer; John Riffe, Roanoke, Va.; and Richard Riffe, Greenville; 10 grandchildren, Cara Riffe, Ryan Riffe, Cory Riffe, Gillian Riffe, Jonathan Benka, Ben Patterson, Ethan Patterson, Joshua Riffe, Jacob Riffe and Brenna Miraszek; and a great-grandchild, Jordan Benka. Mr. Riffe was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Delois Long; and one brother, William Riffe. Memorial contributions may be made to American Heart Association, 59 N. RIFFE
William M. Rohland McLean Trucking retiree was Marine veteran William M. Rohland, of Kinston, N.C., formerly of the Shenango Valley, passed away July 29, 2002. He was 79. Mr. Rohland was born Sept. 16, 1922. He was a veteran of the Fifth Regiment of the Marine Corps at Camp Lejeune, N.C. He was employed by the former McLean Trucking, Shenango Township, for 30 years before retiring in 1984. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Elaine Buck Rohland. Also surviving are a daughter, Katie Albanese and her husband Michael, Hermitage; a granddaughter, Michele Albanese; two sisters, Ruth Ebersole, Harrisburg, and Margaret Spidel, Scotia, N.Y.; a special sister-in-law, Muriel Smith; a niece, Betty Jones; and a nephew, Roy Farmer. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Jennifer Rohland, in 1989. Services were held Aug. 2 in North Carolina.
