Andrew Alex
Bethel Park businessman was decorated WWII vet

MOUNT LEBANON -- Andrew Alex of Mount Lebanon, died at 2:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 29, 2002, in Sinclaire Hospital following a courageous battle with pulmonary fibrosis.

Born in McKees Rocks, Pa., Andrew graduated from Thiel College in Greenville and earned his master's degree in business administration from the University of Pittsburgh.

He worked as a buyer at Salem-Brosius Inc. in Pittsburgh for 15 years. He then established, as a co-owner, a metal fabrication business, Multicraft Products Inc. in the Bethel Park area of Pittsburgh, for which he served as president.

Andrew was a member of Mount Lebanon Parents Athletic Council.

He was an avid tennis player and participated in many local tournaments. He loved the game as well as his tennis friends.

During World War II, Andrew served his country with uncommon valor and great distinction. As a member of the 473rd Regiment, 92nd Infantry Division, he participated in five major battle campaigns, Rome Arno, Po Valley, Apennines, Naples and Fogia. Andrew was awarded the highly coveted Combat Infantry Badge and the European African Middle Eastern Medal with four Bronze Stars.

Andrew and the soldiers of the 473rd received a special citation from their commanding general for gallantry during the Fifth Army offensive in April 1945. The 473rd was converted from anti-aircraft artillery to infantry shortly before the April offensive. With little or no infantry training, Andrew and the soldiers of the 473rd engaged the well-trained and entrenched German regiments in Italy, relieving the Buffalo Bills, a gallant company of African-Americans. At a critical point, Andrew's unit was then joined by a brave Japanese-American company, who saved Andrew's pinned-down unit, and together they quickly gained the upper hand. Many historians cite this battle as a turning point in the Italian Campaign.

Andrew's unit was in continuous combat for 602 days, far longer than any U.S. field army during World War II.

Andrew is survived by: his beloved wife, the former Helen Luke, formerly of Hadley; his two sons, Andrew R. Alex and his wife Dee, Phoenix; and Howard Alex and his wife Peggy, Mount Lebanon; four daughters, Nancy and her husband Walter McMillan, Mount Lebanon; Dr. Nadine Alex M.D., and her husband Timothy Rhodes, Hermitage; Joy Alex, Ph.D. and her husband John Hensler, Mount Lebanon; and Jean and her husband Jay Weil, Mission Viejo, Calif.; and 12 grandchildren. He is also survived by his sisters, Helen Guerra and Babe Saval; and one brother, William Alex, all Pittsburgh; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.

Andrew was preceded in death by three brothers, Frank, Joseph and John Alex.

Family, friends and colleagues remember Andrew as a devoted husband, father and grandfather. His genuine concern for people was expressed in his dedicated involvement to the community. He will be terribly missed.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Thiel College, 75 College Ave., Greenville 16125.
