Brookfield woman was active church member Helen E. Evans, 1045 state Route 7 SE, Brookfield, died at 6 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 7, 2002, in the hospital of Sharon Regional Health System. She was 75. Mrs. Evans was born Nov. 19, 1926, in Sharon to Harold R. Gething and Lyda Mae Tarr Gething. A 1944 graduate of Sharon High School, she attended Stark County Community College and received her degree from American College. Mrs. Evans retired in 1990 from South Side Hospital in Youngstown, with more than 25 years of service in the Medical Records Department. She was formerly employed at Sharon Regional Health System. Mrs. Evans was an active member of Hickory United Methodist Church in Hermitage and belonged to the American Medical Records Association. Surviving are: her husband, Roy G. Evans, who she married on June 8, 1948, Brookfield; three daughters, Mrs. Donald (Linda Sue) Webb, Irving, Texas; Mrs. Ray (Denise G.) White, Houston, Texas; and Mrs. Rodney (Sheryl L.) Marsh, Masury; four grandchildren; and one great-grandson. Helen was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Edward B. Gething; and a granddaughter. Memorial contributions may be made to the Memorial Fund of Hickory United Methodist Church, 240 N. Hermitage Road, Hermitage 16148.
EVANS Thomas Matthews Masury man was avid bowler, Protestant A funeral service will be held Tuesday for Thomas Matthews of Orange Village Care Center, Masury, formerly of 529 Lafayette Ave., Sharon. He died at 2:30 p.m. Saturday (9-7-02) in the hospital of Sharon Regional health System. He was 69. Mr. Matthews was born May 8, 1933, in Uniontown, Pa., a son of Amos and Lillian Wilson Matthews. Mr. Matthews was of the Protestant faith. He was also an avid bowler and golfer. He had been employed at Classic Optical Co. of Youngstown for 10 years, retiring in 1997. His wife, the former Jane McCarl, whom he married in 1977, died in 1993. Surviving are: two stepsons, Joseph McCarl, Sharon; and Jeff McCarl, Columbus, Ohio; one stepdaughter, Betsy Schmidt, Hermitage; two sisters, Charlotte Grantz, Hubbard; and Norma Smith, Uniontown; and a brother, Wallace Matthews, Florida. Thomas was preceded in death by his parents.
MATTHEWS Thomas J. Quinn Hermitage man was Sharon Steel retiree Thomas J. Quinn, 3000 Lakewood Road, Apartment 4304, Hermitage, passed away at 12:35 a.m. Sunday (9-8-02) in Nugent Convalescent Home, Hermitage. He was 85. Mr. Quinn was born Oct. 20, 1916, in Sharon, a son of Edward Quinn and Alice Hanahan Quinn. He was a graduate of Sharon High School and retired in 1978 from the former Sharon Steel Corp.'s Farrell plant, after 35 years of service. Mr. Quinn was a member of Church of the Good Shepherd in West Middlesex; and the Ancient Order of Hibernians at St. Brendan's Church in Stow, Ohio. He also belonged to Local 1355 of United Steelworkers; a lifetime member of Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge 55, Farrell; and was a social member of the German Home Club, Italian Home Club and the Slovak Home, all Farrell. He delivered bibles to the families of deceased members of the local steelworkers union. Surviving are: his wife, the former Mary Ellen Burns, whom he married on Oct. 12, 1940; a daughter, Mrs. Bernard F. (Barbara J.) Evans, Hudson, Ohio; two sons, James E. Quinn and his wife Rita, Mahomet, Ill.; and Thomas J. Quinn, New York, N.Y.; a sister, Mrs. Robert (Patricia) Dach, Sharon; two brothers, Robert Quinn, Sharon; and James Quinn and his wife Mary Ellen, Pittsburgh; seven grandchildren, Bernie Evans, Bradley Evans, Brandt Evans, Jason Quinn, Kelly Quinn Darrow, David Quinn and T.J. Quinn III; and one great-grandson, James Quinn Darrow. He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Mary Nicolls and Rita Donnelly; and two brothers, Edward and William Quinn. QUINN Keith W. Stoner Was superintendent of Hermitage schools Keith W. Stoner, Whispering Oaks, 26 S. Buhl Farm, Hermitage, formerly of 503 Sharon-New Castle Road, Farrell, passed away at 5:45 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 7, 2002, in the hospital of Sharon Regional Health System. He was 85. Born June 6, 1917, in Tarentum, Pa., Mr. Stoner was a son of the late Kauffman and Mildred I. Smith Stoner. Keith was a graduate of Har-Brack High School in Tarentum, where he served as president of his senior class. Later, he graduated with a bachelor of science degree in education from Slippery Rock State College, now known as Slippery Rock University. There he was a three-year letterman in basketball and a two-year letterman of the tennis team, serving as the team captain. He received his master's degree in education administration in 1952 from the University of Pittsburgh. He moved to the Shenango Valley in the early 1940s. Before the war, his first teaching position was in Farrell School District. In September 1946, he began teaching and coaching in Hermitage School District. He served as head basketball coach at Hickory from 1946-52, never having a losing season. In 1950, the team won the District 10 Championship and were later defeated by Pittsburgh Westinghouse. In 1952, he became the assistant principal of Hickory High School until 1961, serving for seven years as the school's senior class adviser. In 1961, he became the first principal of Hickory Junior High School until 1972, when he replaced Ken Delahunty as superintendent of Hermitage schools, a position he held until his retirement in 1975. Mr. Stoner was a member of the Retired Superintendents Association; a life member of the Pennsylvania State Education Association; and the National Education Association. A former member of the Hickory Rotary Club, he served as a member of the Executive Board of the Mercer County Crippled Children Association. Keith was a football official for 12 years; was head of the PIAA District 10 Athletic Committee; and a member of its Board of Control. He was the first commissioner of the Mercer County Athletic Association and for his all-around interest in athletics, was inducted into the Mercer County Sports Hall of Fame. Mr. Stoner was a World War II U.S. Air Force veteran, having been stationed in China. Keith and his wife, Gloria, moved to Whispering Oaks on Jan. 2, 2001, where he was active in organizing the home's Whispering Oaks Residents' Association, for which he served as president and was affectionately known as "The Mayor." Survivors include: his wife, the former Gloria DonDero, whom he married on June 4, 1943, in Springfield, Ohio; one son, Keith Linus "Lin" Stoner, Decatur, Ill.; and several nieces, nephews and grandnieces and -nephews.
