Joseph A. Giangiuli
New Castle retiree had daughter living in Sharon

Joseph A. Giangiuli, 1503 Jackson Ave., New Castle, died Tuesday morning (9-10-02) in Jameson Memorial Hospital, New Castle. He was 95.

Mr. Giangiuli was born March 2, 1907, in Bucci, Italy, to Anthony and Clara DeAmicis Giangiuli.

He was a sheet metal worker for 10 years for Mecon Mechanical Contractors, from which he retired.

Mr. Giangiuli also was a member and worked for Local 12 Sheet Metal Workers for many years.

He was a member of St. Vitus Church, New Castle.

His wife, the former Margaret Rotunno, died in June 1982.

Surviving are: one daughter, JoAnn Vasconi, Sharon; two sons, Joseph E. Giangiuli, Poland, Ohio; and Edward Giangiuli, New Castle; eight grandchilden; and eight great-grandchildren.

Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Betty Benigas and Ida DeAmicis; and two brothers, John Giangiuli and Louis Giangiuli.

Frank P. Fedele

Ex-Masury man had been Shenango Steel foreman

Frank P. Fedele, Autumn Hills Nursing Home, Niles, Ohio, formerly of 632 S. State Line Road, Masury, died at 1 p.m. Monday (9-9-02) in St. Joseph Riverside Hospital, Warren, Ohio. He was 82.

Mr. Fedele was born Nov. 26, 1919, in Sharpsville, the son of Joseph and Rose Rose Fedele.

He served in the Merchant Marines during World War II.

Mr. Fedele was a member of St. Bernadette Church, Masury, and had been employed as foreman of Pattern Makers at Shenango Steel Fabricators of Sharpsville for 32 years.

His wife, Anne Marie Karsonovich, whom he married Nov. 26, 1940, died Aug. 13, 1991.

Surviving are: five daughters, Judith, wife of Thomas Baldwin, Newport News, Va.; Frances Fedele, Niles; Sandra, wife of John Melnik, Champion, Ohio; Karen, wife of Donald Polando, Fowler; and Paula Fedele, Sharon; a son, Frank P. Fedele Jr. and his wife, Dess, Hubbard; and seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a sister and a brother.

Dorothy May Creed
Ex-Transfer man retired as school bus driver in county

Dorothy May Creed, 725 Paul St., New Castle, formerly of Transfer, died Tuesday afternoon, Sept. 10, 2002, in St. Francis Hospital, New Castle. She was 74.

Mrs. Creed was born Nov. 23, 1927 in New Castle to James Riley and Wilma Luse Allen.

She was a retired school bus driver for Mercer County school districts.

Mrs. Creed enjoyed gardening, crocheting and crafts.

Her husband, Fredrick Wilson Creed, whom she married July 29, 1956, died July 31, 2001.

Surviving are: one son, Fredrick J. Creed, Washington, D.C.; one stepson, George Creed, Colville, Wash.; one stepdaughter, Kathryn Creed-Shafer, Brookfield; four sisters, Leona Taylor, Sarah Mortimer and Barbara DiSario, all New Castle; and Mary Mosley, Stoneboro; 10 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; one sister, Shirley Allen; and two brothers, Wilbur and Walter Allen.

Walter G. Graham

Lutheran church member was Korea vet, truck driver

Walter G. Graham, 550 N. Perry Highway, Coolspring Township, died of an apparent heart attack at 7:55 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 10, 2002, in UPMC Horizon, Greenville. He was 69.

Mr. Graham was born Aug. 15, 1933, in Bradford Woods, Allegheny County, Pa., to Pearl Steele.

He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean conflict.

Mr. Graham retired in 1998 as a truck driver from Umthun Trucking Co. in Iowa.

He was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church, Delaware Township.

Surviving are: his wife, the former Carole Feitt, whom he married Sept. 28, 1958; one daughter Mrs. Mark (Pavlo Lynn) Hedglin, Mercer; and two grandsons, Parker and Noah Anderson.

Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Merrhl and Calvin Graham; and one sister, Izetta Stevens.

Nick Hartis
Longtime candies plant manager was Greece native

Nick Hartis, 276 Sunset Blvd., Hermitage, died at 9 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 10, 2002, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident in Hermitage. He was 75.

Mr. Hartis was born Oct. 26, 1926, in Piles, Karpathos, Greece, to George and Calliope Malandri Haratsohartis.

He was a member of Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church, Farrell.

He immigrated in 1947 to the United States, joining his father working in a West Virginia shoe shop and later became a bridge painter there.

He then served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War as a sergeant.

After his service in Korea, Mr. Hartis relocated to New Castle and then the Shenango Valley, where he was employed at Sharon Transformer Division of Westinghouse Electric Corp.

He later became the plant manager for Philadelphia Candies, Hermitage, serving in that position for 35 years and remaining as a consultant to the company. During his career with Philadelphia Candies, he was involved in all aspects of the business and was highly regarded and well respected by all who were associated with him.

Mr. Hartis was acknowledged by his peers in the candy industry for his skill and knowledge as a master candy maker.

He was a member of AHEPA and the Greek American Progressive Association, Farrell. Mr. Hartis also as a member of Retail Confectioners International.

His wife, the former Bonnie J. Zoccola, whom he married in 1970, died in 2000.

Surviving are: his mother-in-law, Betty Jane Fogal Zoccola, Mercer; two nephews, Bryce Zoccola, Hartford; and George Haratsohartis, Karpathos, Greece; and one niece, Despina Mouzis, Athens, Greece.

Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by one brother, Yiannis Haratsohartis; and one sister, Evegnia Kokinou.

Paul John Herrmann

South Py businessman was model railroad enthusiast

Paul John Herrmann, 815 Buckeye Drive, South Pymatuning Township, died at 1:10 a.m. Sept. 11, 2002, in Nugent Convalescent Home, Hermitage, after an extended illness. He was 72.

Mr. Herrmann was born Feb. 4, 1930, in Sharon to Francis Leo "Punch" and Bertha Wilhelm Herrmann.

He graduated from Sharon High School and was owner of Herrmann's Water and Whinton Club Beverages.

Mr. Herrmann was a member of St. Joseph Church, Sharon; Knights of Columbus Sharon Council 684; and Sharpsville American Legion Post 162.

The Model Railroad Association member loved model railroading, as well as gardening. He also was a social member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6404, Sharpsville.

His wife, the former Shirley Suzanne Capson, whom he married June 21, 1952, died Dec. 25, 1987.

Surviving are: three daughters, Mrs. Thomas E. (Valerie) Findley, Mrs. James (Lora) McCrillis and Lynne Vadala, all Sharpsville; three sons, Francis L. Herrmann and his wife, Eileen, Edinboro; and Larry Herrmann and his wife, Bonita; and Paul J. Herrmann II and his wife, Maureen, all Sharpsville; two stepsons, Ralph Setting and Mike Setting, both Warren, Ohio; three sisters, Sister Barbara Herrmann, H.M., Youngstown; and Mrs. Dale (Jean) Hauger and Mrs. Robert (Sally) Buckley, both Sharpsville; two brothers, Harold Herrmann and his wife, Tomiko, Pittsburgh; and Leo Herrmann and his wife, Nancy, Masury; and 17 grandchildren.

Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by a sister, Caroline Herrmann.

Maxine R. Downing

Former Stoneboro woman retired from Polk Center

Maxine R. Downing, 300 Chapel Square Circle, Louisville, Ohio, formerly of 25 Lake St., Stoneboro, died at 7:17 p.m. Monday (9-9-02) in Mercy Medical Center, Canton, Ohio, after an extended illness. She was 77.

She was born March 10, 1925, in Greenville to George Henry and Edna Uldene Dunbar Kiser.

She attended the former Penn High School, Greenville; and retired in 1987 after 15 years of service from the dietary department of Polk Center.

She was of the Methodist faith, an avid bingo player and loved to shop. She enjoyed her family and grandchildren.

She is survived by one daughter, Mrs. William K. (Karen) Anderson, Louisville; one son, Rodney C. Downing and his wife, Roberta, Stoneboro; four grandsons, John Anderson and his wife, Heidi, Louisville; Steve Anderson and his wife, Amanda, Louisville; and Logan and Dakota Downing, Stoneboro; one granddaughter, Stacy Anderson, Louisville; and one great-grandson, Jace Anderson, Louisville.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one son, William H. Downing; one infant daughter, Carol Downing; one sister, Mildred Pease; and four brothers, Kenneth, Marvin, Delbert and Harold Kiser.

Margaret 'Maggie' Kirila

Ex-Brookfield resident was retired hair salon manager

Funeral service will be Friday (9-13-02) for Margaret "Maggie" Kirila, 1353 Churchill Hubbard Road, Youngstown, formerly of Brookfield. She died at 10:40 a.m. Tuesday (9-10-02) in the hospital of Sharon Regional Health System. She was 85.

Mrs. Kirila was born in Farrell on Sept. 10, 1917, a daughter of Stephen and Barbara Furin Komar.

Maggie retired in 1989 as office manager and bookkeeper for Styling I and II, now known as Hair's the Place, Brookfield Township, after more than 20 years of service.

Her memberships included St. Bernadette Church, Masury; and Brookfield Firemen's Auxiliary.

Her husband, Michael R. Kirila, whom she married April 29, 1939, died Oct. 26, 1982.

Survivors include: three daughters, Rosemary Metro, Hubbard; Marie Garrison and her husband, Max, Palm Harbor, Fla.; and Carol Healey and her husband, Lee, Tipp City, Ohio; three sisters, Anne Kekich, Wilson, N.C.; Mary Chambers, Virginia Beach, Va.; and Madeline Hayman and her husband, John, Orchard Park, N.Y.; six grandchildren, Donny Waitzman, Lori Ciolek, Julie Healey, Annie Stearns, Katy Metro and Jackie Metro; and four great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, John Komar; and a sister, Helen Hazi.

Sharon native worked

for National Castings

Donald Rodenbaugh Weaver, 3220 N. Hermitage Road, Transfer, died at 7:12 a.m. Sept. 11, 2002, in UPMC Horizon, Greenville. He was 91.

Mr. Weaver was born April 25, 1911, in Sharon to Carmen and Anna Rodenbaugh Weaver.

He attended Sharon schools and Sharon Methodist Church.

Mr. Weaver was head of purchasing for National Castings in Sharpsville.

He loved the outdoors and spent his retirement years at his hunting camp in Brookston, Pa.

Surviving are: a sister, Dorothy C. Peterson, Transfer; and his niece and her husband, Becky and Larry Baker, Transfer, with whom he made his home.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Glen, Paul and Vern Weaver; and one sister, Flossie Davis.
