Robert John Krantz Sawhill retiree, Fatima member lived in Hermitage Robert John Krantz, 429 S. Buhl Farm Drive, Hermitage, passed away at 10:50 a.m. Saturday (9-28-02) in Orange Village Care Center, Masury, after an extended illness. He was 71. Mr. Krantz was born June 27, 1930, in Farrell, a son of Joseph Krantz and Josephine Kratofil Krantz. He was a 1948 graduate of Farrell High School and was employed by the former Cyclops/Sawhill Tubular, where he worked for 30 years as an electrical engineer. He retired in 1985. Mr. Krantz was a member of Our Lady of Fatima Church in Farrell and its Holy Name Society. He was a third degree member of Knights of Columbus Farrell Council; Sawhill Retirees; and AARP, a retired person's organization. A U.S. Navy veteran, Mr. Krantz served during peacetime. His wife, the former Edith M. Miles, whom he married June 8, 1957, survives at home. Also surviving are: two daughters, Linda Goldman, Dickson, Tenn.; and Lani Krantz, Albany, Calif.; a son, Robert J. Krantz Jr. and his wife Lenda, San Antonio; a sister, Marguerite Gutowski, Hermitage; a granddaughter, Jessica M. Goldman; and twin grandsons, Robert H. and Andrew J. Krantz. He was preceded in death by a brother, Andrew J. Krantz; and a sister, Catherine Detelich.
Harry A. McCurdy '54 Sandy Lake grad was electronic radar specialist NORWALK, Ohio -- Harry A. McCurdy of Collins, Ohio, died late Friday night (9-27-02) in the emergency room of Fisher-Titus Medical Center in Norwalk, after a sudden illness. He was 66. Mr. McCurdy was born May 2, 1936, in Jackson Center. He lived in Pittsburgh from 1960 until moving to Hartland Township, Huron County, in 1970. He was a 1954 graduate of the former Sandy Lake High School and had served in the U.S. Air Force from 1955 to 1958. He attended the University of Pittsburgh. Mr. McCurdy was an electronic radar specialist, starting in 1960 in Pittsburgh for the Federal Aviation Administration and retiring from the FAA in 2000 at Oberlin (Ohio) Air Center. He was an avid reader, gardener and Pittsburgh Steelers fan, and enjoyed his grandchildren. He is survived by: his wife of 42 years, Sandra (Reiser) McCurdy; two daughters, Kelly Highland and her husband Kevin, Owasso, Okla.; and Abby McCurdy, Huron, Ohio; two sons, Mark McCurdy and his wife Kelly, Vermilion, Ohio; and Matthew McCurdy, St. Petersburg, Fla.; five grandchildren; and a brother, John McCurdy and his wife, Debbie, Jackson Center. He was preceded in death by his mother, Florence McCurdy. Memorial contributions may be made to the Citizens Ambulance Service, 19 E. Railroad St., Wakeman, Ohio 44889.
Anna C. Walker NYC musician was Farrell church music minister A funeral service will be held Monday for Anna C. Walker, 18 Cathedral Drive, Farrell. She died at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday (9-25-02) in Nugent Convalescent Home, Hermitage. She was 67. Anna was born June 10, 1935, in Sharon to the Rev. Thomas Walker and Jesse M. Leeks Walker. Anna began her musical career at the age of 10 playing for a church. Her musical talents took her beyond the Shenango Valley. During a period of more than 50 years, she played for such great names as Brother Joe May in New York City; and served as a theater musician for the famous Apollo Theater, playing for such notable personalities as Duke Ellington and Count Basie. Gospel music was always her first love and she loved working with children's choirs. She was nicknamed "Mother Goose" by children's choirs, ultimately becoming affectionately known by that name. Anna returned to the Shenango Valley in 1981 and became Minister of Music at Greater Morris Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Farrell, a position that she cherished. Surviving are: a son, Tony Meeks, Hazelton, Pa.; a sister, Eleanor Walker, Phoenix; and a niece and four nephews, Thomas Russell, East Spencer, N.C.; Marika Russell, Farrell; Christopher A. Walker Jr., San Pedro, Calif.; Gerald G. Riley, Minneapolis, Minn.; and Daneon D. Riley, Phoenix. She was preceded in death by her parents; and a companion, Leroy McRae.
WALKER Helen Kelly Former Sharon woman had brother living here RICHBORO, Pa. -- A Divine Liturgy will be held Wednesday for Helen Kelly, 395 Magnolia Drive, Levittown, Pa., formerly of Sharon. She died of natural causes at 4:10 p.m. Friday, Sept. 27, 2002, in Richboro Care Center after an extended illness. She was 89. Mrs. Kelly was born Aug. 28, 1913, in Numine, Pa., to George Sasala and Margaret Gabore Sasala. She was a waitress for 10 years at The Signal Restaurant, retiring in 1980. Mrs. Kelly was a member for 15 years of Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Levittown and belonged to the Falls Township Senior Citizens group located in Fairless Hills, Pa. She enjoyed bingo and going to Atlantic City, N.J. Mrs. Kelly also loved going to Long Island and watching horse races. Her husband, Joseph Kelly, whom she married Aug. 28, 1962, died in November 1984. Surviving are: two brothers, Stephen Sasala, New Castle; and John Sasala, Sharon; and a niece, Palma L. Nichols, with whom she resided for 15 years in Levittown. Besides her husband, Mrs. Kelly was preceded in death by her parents; five sisters, Margaret Herrick, Annie Sgro, Mary Buynak, Pauline Thornton and Theresa Schatz; and three brothers, George, Michael and Joseph Sasala.
Warren R. Keck Jr. Warren R. Keck Jr. of Bessemer Street, Greenville, died at 12:05 p.m. Saturday (9-28-02) in White-Cliff Nursing Home, Hempfield Township. He was 89. Obituary information was incomplete.
KECK Ralph Charles McConnell Volant-area man worked at Cooper Energy Services Ralph Charles McConnell, Volant RD 3, Wilmington Township, Lawrence County, died at 3:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 27, 2002, in his residence after an extended illness. He was 88. Mr. McConnell was born Oct. 8, 1913, in Moore's Corners, Slippery Rock, to Benjamin Pearson McConnell and Elizabeth Jane Hilgar McConnell. He was employed for 35 years at Cooper Energy Services Reciprocating Products, Grove City, where he was an electric chrome plater. Mr. McConnell was a member of Rich Hill Presbyterian Church, Volant. His wife of 66 years, the former Bertha Marie Wilson, whom he married Oct. 17, 1936, survives at the residence. He also leaves: a daughter, Shirley Gaylene Hammerschmidt and her husband James, Greenville; a son, Wayne Ralph McConnell and his wife Donna Jean, Hermitage; one sister, Mary Bernice Schrantz, New Castle; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Mr. McConnell was preceded in death by his parents; one daughter, Joyce Darlene Latimer; and two brothers and four sisters. Memorial contributions may be made through the funeral home to the Hospice of New Castle or to Rich Hill Presbyterian Church.
McCONNELL Rev. Gene Boyd Retired Conn. Lake church pastor had daughter here The Rev. Gene Boyd, 11076 Foreman Ave., Conneaut Lake, died Friday evening, Sept. 27, 2002, in Meadville Medical Center after an extended illness. He was 82. Rev. Boyd was born June 10, 1920, in Carnegie, Pa., to John Boyd and Annie Polen Boyd. An alumnus of Carnegie High School, he graduated in 1954 from the University of Pittsburgh and from the Theological Seminary in Pittsburgh in June 1957. As a U.S. Army veteran, Rev. Boyd served in European countries including England and France during World War II. He was a pastor in numerous churches, last pastoring in Fifth Street Presbyterian Church in Conneaut Lake from 1967 to 1985. Rev. Boyd enjoyed traveling in the western United States on Amtrak. He also enjoyed classical music and having time with his children. His wife, the former Florence J. Midgley, whom he married Oct. 12, 1945, survives at home. Also surviving are: three daughters, Carolyn A. Holmes and her husband Duane, Washington, Pa.; Dr. Cathy J. Owens and her husband William, Greenville; and Cyntia J. Leavell and her husband Rick, Lebanon, Ore.; two sons, David S. Boyd, Washington; and Douglas N. Boyd and his wife Judy, Sterling, Va.; 10 grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren. Rev. Boyd was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters. Memorial contributions may be made through the funeral home to the Organ Fund of Fifth Street Presbyterian Church in Conneaut Lake; or to a charity of the donor's choice.
Donn Clair Brydon Korean War vet retired as Slippery Rock teacher Donn Clair Brydon, 315 Harmony Road, Slippery Rock Township, died at 5:06 p.m. Friday, Sept. 27, 2002, in United Community Hospital, Pine Township, following a brief illness. He was 72. Mr. Brydon was born July 2, 1930, in the borough of Slippery Rock, Butler County, to Thomas Brydon and Helen Griffith Brydon. He graduated from the former Slippery Rock State Teachers College and went on to earn a master's degree in education from Pennsylvania State University's main campus. Mr. Brydon taught history in Slippery Rock Area School District from 1958 until his retirement in 1992. He served as a lieutenant in the U.S. Navy during the Korean conflict. Mr. Brydon was an active member of Branchton (Pa.) United Methodist Church and a regular member of the ACBL Bridge Club in Butler, Ellwood City and New Castle. His wife, the former Helen Kathryne Grubb, whom he married Dec. 27, 1958, survives in Slippery Rock. Also surviving are: one son, Thomas L. Brydon, Butler; and one sister, Darla McPaul, West Sunbury. Mr. Brydon was preceded in death by a daughter, Joanna; a son, Jonathan; his parents; and a brother, Robert.
