James Edward Hughes Westinghouse retiree was Mason, WWII Army vet A funeral service will be held Friday for James Edward Hughes, Bentley House, 2400 Garden Way, Hermitage, formerly of Whippoorwill Drive, Hermitage. He died at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 1, 2002, in the hospital of Sharon Regional Health System following an extended illness. He was 78. Mr. Hughes was born March 8, 1924, in New Castle to Edward Hughes and Mary Alexander Hughes. He graduated in 1942 from Union High School in New Castle and worked as a wirer for 37 years at the former Sharon Transformer Division of Westinghouse Electric Corp. He retired in 1982. Mr. Hughes was a member of East Side Church (Baptist-Disciples of Christ), Sharon. He served in the Army during World War II and was part of the D-day Invasion. He was a 32nd degree Mason and belonged to Free and Accepted Masons Lodge 810, Hermitage; and Benevolent and Protective Order the Elks Lodge 103, Sharon. Mr. Hughes enjoyed golfing, bowling, fishing and hunting. Surviving are: his wife, the former Louise Jacob of Hermitage, whom he married Jan. 16, 1947; one daughter, Mrs. John (Sharon) Tyliszczak, Masury; one son, James E. and his wife Cynthia Hughes, Las Vegas; one brother, Fredrick Hughes, New Castle; and four grandchildren, John M. Tyliszczak, Bowling Green, Ohio; and Teva M. Tyliszczak, Justin Hughes and Chris Hughes, all Las Vegas. Mr. Hughes was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Helen Love and Jeanette Lutz; and four brothers, Edward, John, Eustace and Walter Hughes. HUGHES Mary Lou Gillespie Sharon homemaker belonged to card clubs Mary Lou Gillespie, 800 Linden St., Sharon, died at 6:55 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 2, 2002, in the hospital of Sharon Regional Health System after a brief illness. She was 81. Mrs. Gillespie was born April 10, 1921, in Chester, W.Va., to Edward T. Garner and Birtie McCormack Garner. She was an alumna of the Class of 1940 at Mount Lebanon (Pa.) High School. A homemaker, Mrs. Gillespie was a member of St. Joseph's Church in Sharon. She also belonged to various card clubs and enjoyed cooking. Her husband, Robert Gillespie, whom she married Sept. 20, 1952, died Oct. 7, 1988. Surviving are: two daughters, Mrs. Michael (Lorie) Kerins and Mrs. John (Lynn) Sherretts, both Sharon; and five grandchildren, Michael R. Kerins, Jayne Sherretts, Robert Sherretts, Marlee Sherretts and Kelly Sherretts. Besides her husband, Mrs. Gillespie was preceded in death by her parents; and one sister, Lorien Shappacher.
GILLESPIE Frances V. Kerr Ex-Hermitage woman was retired Murphy's manager SOLOMONS, Md. -- Frances V. Kerr, 13325 Dowell Road, Solomons, formerly of 556 S. Neshannock Road, Hermitage, died at 9:40 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 2, 2002, in Solomons Nursing Center. She was 82. Mrs. Kerr was born Sept. 18, 1920, in Sharon to William S. Calvin and Effie Flowers Calvin. She retired in 1978 as the office manager of the former G.C. Murphy Co. in Sharon. Mrs. Kerr was a member of New Virginia United Methodist Church, Hermitage. Her husband, Thomas V. Kerr Sr., whom she married Dec. 20, 1937, died June 17, 1991. Surviving are: one son, Thomas V. Kerr Jr., Chesapeake Beach, Md.; one brother, William Calvin, Sharon; one sister, Mildred Sweesy, Hermitage; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers and two sisters.
KERR Helen Elizabeth Stayduhar Miller Pittsburgh native belonged to Charleston Homemakers Helen Elizabeth Stayduhar Miller, formerly of 300 N. Charleston Road, Sharpsville, died at 6:30 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 2, 2002, in Grove Manor, Grove City. She was 86. Mrs. Miller was born April 12, 1916, in Pittsburgh to John Stayduhar and Johanna Malic Stayduhar. She was a cook for three years at Children's Aid Society in Mercer, and later was an office clerk for two years at Hickory High School in Hermitage. Mrs. Miller was a member of Charleston Homemakers. Her husband, Roy Russell Miller, whom she married April 1, 1939, died in February 1965. Surviving are: two daughters, Joanne, wife of Buster Stanley; and Margaret, wife of Charles G. Masters, both Mercer; five grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. Besides her husband, Mrs. Miller was preceded in death by her parents; three sisters, Johanna Stayduhar, Anne Candek and Mary Suhaldolnik; four brothers, Charles, Joseph, William and John Stayduhar; and two grandchildren, Lynn Clayton and Stephen Patrick Masters.
