George Bozanich Ohio steel plants foreman married ex-Farrell woman YOUNGSTOWN -- George Bozanich, Youngstown, passed away at 12:58 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 3, 2002, in St. Elizabeth Health Center. He was 73. Mr. Bozanich was born April 9, 1929, in Youngstown, the only child of Peter and Suzana Valko Bozanich. He was a 1949 graduate of Rayen High School in Youngstown and spent his career in the steel industry. He had been a foreman at both the LTV Briar Hill Works and at Copperweld Steel, both Youngstown. Mr. Bozanich was a member of Holy Trinity Serbian Orthodox Church in Youngstown. He enjoyed walking in Mill Creek Park in Youngstown, helping people and attending various social functions. He also was an elected precinct committeeman in the Fourth Ward. Mr. Bozanich leaves his wife, the former Ellen Balach, formerly of Farrell, who survives at home. Also surviving are: three children, their spouses and two grandchildren, Peter Bozanich, his wife Gwen and their daughter, Lindsay Bozanich, Boardman, Ohio; David Bozanich, his wife Joyce and their son, Paul Bozanich, also Boardman; and Yvonne and her husband Mark Doncic, Pittsburgh. He was preceded in death by his parents.
BOZANICH Matthew 'Matt' E. Frankovich Sr. Farrell, independent sports star was county hall of famer PITTSBURGH -- Matthew "Matt" E. Frankovich Sr. of 36 Cornell Place, Pittsburgh, formerly of Lee Avenue in Farrell and Victory Drive in Sharpsville, passed away at 1:55 a.m. on Thursday (10-3-02) in St. Clair Hospital in Pittsburgh. He was 85. Mr. Frankovich was born Feb. 10, 1917, in Farrell, a son of Steven and Mary Corinich Frankovich. He was a 1935 alumnus of Farrell High School, where he was a starting guard for the football team. He was also the leading scorer on the 1935 Farrell basketball team that won 17 straight games before being upset by Erie East in the District 10 championship game. In the late 1930s, Matt was one of Shenango Valley's outstanding basketball players in independent-league and tournament competition. He was also an outstanding third baseman in softball for the Farrell Croatian Club in the Federation of Clubs League and played for other independent teams in the area. Mr. Frankovich was enshrined in the Mercer County Hall of Fame in 1991. He was employed by the former Sharon Transformer Division of Westinghouse Electric Corp., where he worked for 22 years as a copper worker, retiring in 1977. Previously he had worked for the former Trinity Industries-Greenville Rail Car Division and the former National Castings Division of Midland-Ross Corp. in Sharon. Mr. Frankovich was a member of Our Lady of Fatima Church in Farrell; and the Croatian Fraternal Union Lodge 126; and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5286, both Farrell. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army and was stationed in the Philippines, achieving the rank of corporal. His wife, the former Mary Vaglica, whom he married Thanksgiving Day in 1951, passed away on Christmas Eve in 1973. He is survived by: his son, Matthew E. Frankovich Jr., with whom he lived in the Mount Lebanon section of Pittsburgh. Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Frank and Steven Frankovich; and two sisters, Pauline and Helen Morgan. FRANKOVICH Nina M. Lesnett Antiques buyer, seller was Delaware Twp. homemaker Nina M. Lesnett, a resident of Woodland Place, Coolspring Township, formerly of 802 Mercer Road, Delaware Township, died at 4 a.m. Thursday morning (10-3-02) in Woodland Place. She was 86. Mrs. Lesnett was born March 14, 1916, in Jefferson Township, a daughter of the late Austin and Stella Hittle Miller. On Dec. 20, 1934, she married Elmer R. Lesnett, who preceded her in death Dec. 1, 1990. Mrs. Lesnett was a homemaker and for many years was actively involved with her husband in buying and selling antiques. She was a lifetime member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Delaware Township. She is survived by: three sons, William Lesnett and his wife Connie; Thomas Lesnett and his wife Shirley; and John Lesnett, all Greenville; and six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Besides her parents and her husband, Mrs. Lesnett was preceded in death by two brothers, Wayne Miller and Forrest Miller; and two sisters, Evelyn King Gilson and Ruby Loomis. The family has suggested that memorial contributions be made to the Memorial Fund of St. John's Lutheran Church, 10 Beil Hill Road, Greenville 16125.
LESNETT Frank Louis Papay Sr. Farrell grad lived in Ohio, was financial manager NEW PHILADELPHIA, Ohio -- Frank Louis Papay Sr. passed away at 8:12 a.m. on Saturday morning, Sept. 28, 2002, during his sleep in his New Philadelphia home. He was 61. Frank was born July 11, 1941, in Farrell, a son of the late Frank and Anne Weiss Papay. A graduate of Farrell Area High School, where he was a basketball player, he later served honorably in the U.S. Navy. Frank was a financial manager for Beneficial Finance Co. and worked in Cleveland, Akron and New Philadelphia, retiring in 1998 following 34 years of dedicated service. Since 2000, he worked with National Real Estate of Pittsburgh. Frank enjoyed playing golf and traveling. Most of all, he enjoyed spending time with his family and many friends. He is survived by: his wife, the former Sue Walton, whom he married May 20, 1995; three sons, Frank L. Papay Jr. and his wife Leslie, Canal Fulton, Ohio; Richard "Rick" A. Papay and his wife Andrea, Wadsworth, Ohio; and Kurt Farnsworth, Columbus, Ohio; one daughter, Mrs. Rick (Kimberly) Ryland, Norton, Ohio; five grandchildren, Adam Long, Frank L. Papay III, Nicholas J. Papay, Richard Papay Jr. and Bailey Papay; a sister, Mary Ann Mercurio and her fiance, Jim Stearns, Farrell; two brothers, Keith Vukovich, Sharon; and Gary Vukovich and his wife Chris, Mercer; his mother-in-law, Frances "Butch" Walton, New Philadelphia; and aunts and uncles, some of whom live in the Shenango Valley. Besides his parents, Frank was preceded in death by his first wife, the former Lois Marie Gunther; and two brothers, John and George Vukovich. Frank was a warm and kind man with a great smile and always ready to give a helping hand to others; a man of great physical strength and a very hard worker. He loved his family and grandchildren. Memorial contributions may be given to the American Cancer Society, 19 Jefferson Ave., Sharon 16146. Calling hours were held from 6 to 9 p.m. Sept. 30, with a funeral service at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 1, in New Philadelphia, with Monsignor George J. Schlegel officiating. Interment was in Calvary Cemetery, New Philadelphia, with full military honors afforded by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1445, New Philadelphia. A reception followed in St. Ambrose Hall of Sacred Heart Church, New Philadelphia.
Bart M. Uhrin Sr. Retired West Salem farmer belonged to Catholic Sokol Bart M. Uhrin Sr., St. Paul Homes, 339 E. Jamestown Road, West Salem Township, formerly of 72 Cossitt Road, West Salem Township, died at 11:16 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 2, 2002, in UPMC Horizon, Greenville. He was 90. Mr. Uhrin was born June 15, 1912, in Shenango to John Uhrin and Justina Kalafut Uhrin. He attended the former Good Hope Country School in West Salem Township and was a self-employed dairy farmer, also in West Salem Township, retiring in 1978. Mr. Uhrin was a member of St. Michael's Church in Greenville and a longtime member of the Catholic Sokol. For 11 years, he was a volunteer at what was Greenville Regional Hospital. He was an avid bingo player and enjoyed polka dancing and playing the accordion and banjo. Mr. Uhrin also enjoyed playing cards. His first wife, the former Edna Hauser, whom he married April 1, 1936, died Jan. 28, 1972. His second wife, the former Margaret Violetta, whom he married Aug. 18, 1973, died Aug. 15, 1987. Surviving are: two daughters, Mary Ann Allison; and Mrs. Robert (Dorothy) Scott, both Greenville; five sons, James Uhrin and his wife Marcia, Mercer; and Bart M. Uhrin Jr. and his wife Sue; Benedict Uhrin and his wife Terry; Joseph Uhrin and his wife Judy; and Thomas Uhrin, all Greenville; 20 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. Beside his first and second wives, he was preceded in death by his parents; four sisters, Justina Lucich, Agnes Ceremuga, Anna Kocis and Sister Bernadette Uhrin, Order of St. Francis; two brothers, John and Joseph Uhrin; and two infant twin great-grandchildren. Memorial contributions may be made to School Sisters of St. Francis, 934 Forest Ave., Pittsburgh 15202.
UHRIN Jennie F. Wansor Eagle Aerie auxiliary member left 96 survivors Jennie F. Wansor, 1079 Leslie St., Sharon, passed away at 11:55 p.m. Wednesday (10-2-02) in the Coronary Care Unit of UPMC Horizon, Farrell. She was 82. Mrs. Wansor was born Feb. 3, 1920, in Farrell, a daughter of Joseph and Elizabeth Korab. A lifelong area resident, she attended Farrell area schools and was a homemaker. Mrs. Wansor was a former member of Church of the Sacred Heart in Sharon and was a lifetime member of the Ladies Auxiliary to Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie 327, Sharon. Prior to her illness, she enjoyed playing bingo; as well as fishing with her husband, George Wansor, whom she married in 1939. He passed away in 1988. Surviving are: three daughters, Margaret Shebeck, Wheatland; Laura Porterfield, wife of Jerry, Sharon; and Sandra Newton, at home; three sons, George W. "Sonny" Wansor and his wife Betty; and Moe Wansor and his wife Shirley, all Sharon; and James E. Wansor, Brookfield; two sisters, Alice Mosley; and Sophie, wife of Nick Kucik, both Farrell; one brother, Edward Korab, Mercer; 30 grandchildren; 51 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren. Besides her husband, Mrs. Wansor was preceded in death by her parents; one daughter, Gloria Kettering; two sisters, Helen Clingerman and Valeria Hook; two brothers Walter and Edmond Korab; and four grandchildren.
