Ann Sereday Hermitage WE retiree was member of Holy Trinity, loved grandchildren A private funeral service with public calling hours will be held Monday for Ann Sereday, 619 S. Mercer Ave., Hermitage. She died at 4:10 p.m. Friday, Oct. 4, 2002, in Nugent Convalescent Home, Hermitage, following an extended illness. She was 85. Ann was born Aug. 6, 1917. An alumna of Sharon High School, she retired in 1979 after 43 years as a secretary for the former Sharon Transformer Division of Westinghouse Electric Corp. Ann was a lifelong member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Hermitage. Surviving are: one daughter, Mrs. Lynn (Carol) Heben, Hermitage; one sister, Vera Anderson, Farrell; and three grandchildren, Heather Lynn, Kyle and Ashley, whom she loved dearly. She was preceded in death by her parents; and two sisters, Helen and Mary. SEREDAY Alberta M. Baker Harrisville woman was waitress at the Spot Alberta M. Baker, West Mercer Street, Harrisville, died Friday morning, Oct. 4, 2002, in Allegheny Valley Hospital. She was 86. Mrs. Baker was born May 16, 1916, in Karns City, Pa., to Roy C. Keck and Edith M. Rodgers Keck. She was a graduate of Karns City High School. She was a waitress at the former Spot Restaurant of Harrisville, retiring in 1980 with 25 years of service. As a member of Harrisville United Methodist Church, Mrs. Baker belonged to the Ladies Sunday School Class. She was also a member of Harrisville Community Club and the Senior Center of Slippery Rock. Her husband, Paul K. Baker, whom she married on July 2, 1937, died Feb. 20, 1989. Surviving are: one son, Donald L. Baker and his wife Charlotte A., Butler; and two grandsons, David M. Baker and Steven D. Baker, both Cabot, Pa. Besides her husband, Mrs. Baker was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, Isaac Keck and Clifford Keck. BAKER Francis Leo Hines Retiree was outdoorsman, winner of 3 Purple Hearts Francis Leo Hines of Masury, passed away peacefully at 8:05 p.m. Friday (10-4-02) in St. Elizabeth Health Center, Youngstown, following a brief illness. He was 70. Mr. Hines was born Oct. 9, 1931, in Sharon, a son of Joseph and Gertrude Stanton Hines. He attended both St. Joseph's and Sharon schools. For more than 47 years, Mr. Hines worked out of Local 47 of Plumbers and Steamfitters union, where he served on the Executive Board and retired in 1992. Mr. Hines was a member of St. Bernadette's Church in Masury and formerly belonged to St. Joseph's Church in Sharon. He also belonged to American Legion Post 432 in Wheatland, as well as Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6233, West Middlesex. He also took part in their Honor Guard. An outdoorsman, he enjoyed hunting and fishing and taking walks in the woods. Mr. Hines belonged to Sharpsville River Rats. He had a strong devotion to the Blessed Mother and enjoyed spending time with his daughters and grandchildren. A decorated war veteran, Mr. Hines served in the Korean conflict with the 29th Regiment Combat Team in Okinawa, Japan; the Fourth Cavalry Regiment George Company First Cavalry Division; and the 14th Regiment Baker Company. He received the Silver Star, two Bronze Stars for valor, three Purple Hearts and received the Korean Service Medal with five stars for having served in five campaigns. Mr. Hines was selected to serve on the honor detail for General George McArthur's funeral detail. Mr. Hines was instrumental in the planning and development of the Korean War Memorial in Shenango Township. He is survived by: his three daughters, Maryann Hines, Westerville, Ohio; Roseann Morgan-Harris and her husband Rick Harris, Hubbard; and Sueann Hines and her husband David Andraso, Orange, Calif. He also leaves: his two sisters, Rosemary Hollenbank and her husband David, Hubbard; and Patricia Bolchalk and her husband John, Howland Township, Trumbull County; and one brother, James Hines and his wife Anna Mae, Hermitage. He leaves his three grandchildren, Sara Ann Morgan, Ryan Glenn-Leo Morgan and Joseph Hines Andraso. His parents; two brothers, Joseph and John Hines; and one infant sister, Joanne Hines, preceded him in death. Memorial contributions may be made to National Shrine of Our Lady of Lebanon, 2759 N. HINES Dorothy Eleanor Kania Liberty Township woman was homemaker, painter Dorothy Eleanor Kania, a resident since 1987 of 33 Kimberly Drive, Liberty Township, died at 5:30 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 5, 2002, in her residence after an extended illness. She was 78. Mrs. Kania was born April 14, 1924, in Washington, Pa., to Frank and Myrtle Schmidt Wise. She graduated from Trinity High School in Washington. A homemaker, Mrs. Kania worked in a number of jobs including retail sales, office work; and as a hand painter for Washington Glass Co. As a member for many years of Fairhill Manor Christian Church in Washington, she served as a deacon, Sunday school teacher and Bible School teacher. She attended North Liberty Presbyterian Church locally, and was a volunteer at Orchard Manor, Pine Township. Mrs. Kania also belonged to AARP, a retired person's organization. She enjoyed gardening, crafts and fishing. Surviving are: her husband, Charles S. Kania, whom she married on April 26, 1947, at home; a son, Tim Kania, Johnstown, Pa.; a daughter, Susan, wife of the Rev. Jerry A. Mahaffey, Grove City; a grandson, Chris Mahaffey and his wife Tracy, Grove City; a granddaughter, Sheri Umbaugh and her husband Barry, Gettysburg, Pa.; and two great-grandchildren, Cailin Umbaugh and Chelsea Mahaffey. KANIA Alberta McCann Sharon homemaker was Bell operator, Kelly Girl Alberta McCann of 1077 Bechtol Ave., Sharon, passed away at 2:25 p.m. Friday (10-4-02) in the Intensive Care Unit of Sharon Regional Health System following a brief illness. She was 74. Mrs. McCann was born April 21, 1928, in Altoona, Pa., a daughter of Thomas Paul McGinley and Pauline Callahan McGinley. She was a 1946 alumna of Sharon High School. A homemaker for most of her life, Mrs. McCann also worked for Bell Telephone Co. in downtown Sharon as an operator. She was also a Kelly Girl throughout the area for several years. As a member of St. Joseph's Church in Sharon, she belonged to their Women's Guild, Altar Rosary Society and sang in the church choir. She married Donald Francis McCann on Sept. 6, 1949. He survives her at home. Mrs. McCann is also survived by: her daughter, Karen McCann-Rossi, Transfer; three sons, Eric Paul McCann, Sharpsville; Greg James McCann, West Middlesex; and Mark Donald McCann, Hermitage; and four grandchildren, Melanie McCann, Matthew Rossi, Clinton Rossi and Nathan McCann. Mrs. McCann was preceded in death by her parents; and her sister, Shirley Hirsch, who passed away in 1973. McCANN Elsie Specht Homemaker was native of Germany Elsie Specht, West Salem Township, formerly of Parma, Ohio, died at 8:15 p.m. Friday, Oct. 4, 2002, in St. Paul Homes, West Salem Township, after an extended illness. She was 97. Mrs. Specht was born July 5, 1905, in Lemberg, Germany, to Ludwig Becker and Elisabetha Kuntz Becker. She attended schools in Germany and was a homemaker. Mrs. Specht enjoyed gardening, cooking and reading. Her husband, Oscar Specht, whom she married in 1935, passed away in August of 1975. Surviving are: a son, Werner Specht and his wife Marilyn, Hermitage; two grandchildren, Susan Huckestein and her husband Dr. Daniel Huckestein, DuBois, Pa.; and Michael and his wife Jalena Specht, Alexandria, Va.; and two great-granddaughters, Alexandra and Alyssa Huckestein. Besides her husband, Mrs. Specht was preceded in death by her parents, three sisters and three brothers. Memorial contributions may be made to the Activities Fund of St. Paul Homes, 339 E. Jamestown Road, Greenville 16125; or the Endowment Fund of St. Paul's United Church of Christ, 159 Todd Ave., Hermitage 16148.
