Carmen V. 'Rick' Bartholomew
Masury man was decorated veteran, plant inspector

A memorial service will be held Sunday for Carmen V. "Rick" Bartholomew of 684 S. Stateline Road, Masury. He died at 10:35 p.m. Monday (10-14-02) in the hospital of Sharon Regional Health System following a brief illness. He was 82.

Mr. Bartholomew was born on May 26, 1920, at home in Masury, a son of Anthony and Antoinette Micco Bartholomew.

During World War II, Rick achieved the rank of Tech 4 while serving our country in the U.S. Army. His decorations and citations included the American Campaign Medal, European African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with four Bronze Stars, World War II Victory Medal, Bronze Arrowhead, Good Conduct Medal and Distinguished Unit Badge with cluster.

Mr. Bartholomew retired in 1982 from General American Transportation Corp.'s former Masury plant, where he worked as an inspector for more than 37 years.

Rick was a member of Church of the Sacred Heart in Sharon.

In his spare time, he was an avid fisherman, hunter, gardener and cook. Additionally he liked to build and remodel homes. He also enjoyed his grandchildren.

Survivors include: his wife, the former Frances M. Novak, whom he married on Feb. 6, 1943; four children, Janice Schelb, Cascades, Calif.; Karen Payne, Las Vegas; David Bartholomew, Masury; and Cynthia Bartholomew, Masury; two brothers, James Bartholomew, Sharon; and Lewis Bartholomew, Masury; two sisters, Rose Miller, Brookfield; and Delores Rodocoy, Hermitage; three grandchildren, Bryan Schuster, Heather Payne and Brandon Bartholomew; and two great-grandchildren, Marsia and Nathan Schuster.

Mr. Bartholomew was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Marcia Bartholomew; four brothers, Joseph, Anthony, Albert and Michael Bartholomew; and two sisters, Jean Webster and Caroline Batton.

Nellie M. Beil

Hermitage woman had worked at Murphy's

Nellie M. Beil, Hermitage, formerly of Transfer, died at 2 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 16, 2002, in John XXIII Home, Hermitage, after an extended illness. She was 86.

Mrs. Beil was born Jan. 13, 1916, in West Middlesex to Jacob B. Hoffman and Edna Sweesey Hoffman.

A graduate of Hickory High School, she at one time was a clerk at the former G.C. Murphy's store in Farrell.

Mrs. Beil was an active member of Zion's United Church of Christ in Transfer and belonged to Transfer Volunteer Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary; and the Ladies Auxiliary to Benevolent and Protective Order of the Elks Lodge 145, Greenville.

She loved flower gardening and animals. She was a great Pittsburgh Pirates fan.

Her husband, Ralph E. Beil, whom she married on May 7, 1940, died Aug. 21, 1982.

Surviving are: one daughter, Mrs. Lawrence (Margaret "Peggy") Clarke, Sharon; one son, Richard E. Beil and his wife Kathy, Crete, Ill.; one sister, Mary Atkinson, Hermitage; six grandchildren, Linda Reel, Brian Clarke, Robert Clarke, William Clarke, Julie Driscoll and Steven Beil; and four great-grandchildren, Michael Reel, Sam Reel, Paul Reel and Clara Driscoll.

Besides her husband, Mrs. Beil was preceded in death by her parents; three sisters, Josephine Spangler, Jessie Zook and Julia Hoffman; and one brother, Eugene Hoffman.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Organ Fund of Zion's United Church of Christ, 17 Church St., Transfer 16154.

Emma Jane Cubbison

Former Clark woman was longtime borough secretary

Emma Jane Cubbison of Woodland Place, Coolspring Township, formerly of Clark, passed away at 5:10 a.m. Tuesday (10-15-02) in the nursing home. She was 80.

She was born Sept. 27, 1922, in Farrell, the daughter of James D. Carlos Sr. and Emma Lena Lauer Carlos.

Mrs. Cubbison was 1940 alumna of Farrell High School.

She was borough secretary for Clark for many years. Holding an elected position, Mrs. Cubbison enjoyed politics. She was a member of the Young Democrats, for which she also served as secretary.

Mrs. Cubbison was a former member of the Ladies Auxiliary of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6166 in Hermitage. She was a member of Our Lady of Fatima Church, Farrell.

Her husband, James "Snapper" Cubbison, whom she married Sept. 5, 1942, died Dec. 6, 1993.

She leaves a sister, Inez Nichols, Hermitage; and her nieces and nephews, Mary Rita Kladitis; Joseph "Butch" Nichols and his wife, Marsha; Nancy Carlos; Marilyn Carlos; Tom Carlos and his wife, Sandy; and James Carlos and his wife, Judy.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, James D. Carlos Jr.; one infant brother; and one infant sister.

Melvin C. Knauff

Mercer foster parent

was truck driver

Melvin C. Knauff, 223 Cunningham St., Mercer, died at 9:10 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 15, 2002, in UPMC Horizon, Greenville, following an extended illness. He was 74.

Mr. Knauff was born April 4, 1928, in Grove City, to Bud Knauff Sr. and Pearletta Barr Knauff.

He attended Grove City area schools and worked for the former Bish Inc. of Greenville as a truck driver for 14 years. He retired in 1985.

Mr. Knauff was a member of the former Church of God of Prophecy in Mercer.

He was an avid Pittsburgh Pirates and Steelers fan.

As a foster parent for Bair Foundation of New Wilmington, Mr. Knauff was a foster parent for more than 50 children and was recipient of the Foster Parent of the Year Award.

Surviving are: his wife, the former Gladys Bobbert, at home, whom he married on Aug. 1, 1947; four daughters, Ruth Glaiser, Mercer; Judy Frantz, Farrell; Emma Hatfield, Transfer; and Tena Knauff, also Mercer; three sons, Melvin Knauff Jr. and his wife Lynda, Union City, Pa.; Dennis Knauff and his wife Barbara, Stoneboro; and Jerry Knauff and his wife Wanda, Meadville; a brother, Bud Knauff Jr., Orlando, Fla.; 29 grandchildren; and 30 great-grandchildren.

Mr. Knauff was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Helen Montgomery; and four brothers, Robert, Edward, Dennis and Pete Knauff.

Ronald L. McEwen

Fredonia man was Army veteran, Reznor worker

Ronald L. McEwen, of 85 First St., Fredonia, died unexpectedly at 6:40 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 16, 2002, in UPMC Horizon, Greenville. He was 58.

Mr. McEwen was born May 23, 1944, in Grove City, a son of Virgil Wayne and Rubie Mae Hause McEwen.

On Jan. 28, 1965, he married Bonnie Joan Williams, who survives.

He was employed at Reznor -- a unit of Thomas & Betts Corp., Mercer.

Mr. McEwen was a member of Fredonia Presbyterian Church and an active member of Fredonia Volunteer Fire Department.

A U.S. Army veteran having served during the Vietnam era, he belonged to American Legion Post 919, Fairview Township.

Besides his wife, he is survived by: his mother, Fredonia; two daughters, Tammy Lynn Boyce, Fredonia; Traci Leann McEwen, at home; a son, Bob McEwen and his wife Joan, Fredonia; two brothers, Gary McEwen, Fredonia; and Ken McEwen, Conneaut Lake; a grandson, Joshua Lee McEwen; and a granddaughter, Tara Lynn Boyce, both Fredonia.

Mr. McEwen was preceded in death his father, who died on Sept. 23, 1991.

The family has suggested that memorial tributes be made to Fredonia Volunteer Fire Department, First Street, Fredonia 16124.

Ralph 'Junior' Orr Jr.

Hubbard man was

mechanic, truck driver

YOUNGSTOWN -- Ralph "Junior" Orr Jr. of 155 Youngstown-Hubbard Road, Apartment 8, Hubbard, passed away at 4:08 p.m. Tuesday afternoon (10-15-02) in Forum Health Northside Medical Center after an extended illness. He was 76.

Mr. Orr, who was known as "Junior," was born July 17, 1926, in Hubbard, a son of Ralph Orr Sr. and Maggie Coller Orr.

He was a lifelong Hubbard resident.

Mr. Orr worked as a mechanic and truck driver for Siegle Trucking of North Lima, Ohio, and later worked as a custodian for Brookfield School System, retiring in 1993.

His first wife, Mary Root Orr, died on Dec. 27, 1979.

He leaves: his second wife, Ethel Mae Boyd Panning Orr, whom he married Oct. 19, 1984; a daughter, Carol Petrinyak and her husband Frank, Hubbard; stepsons, William Panning and his wife Roseann, Brookfield; and Thomas Panning and his wife Sherry, Hubbard; a stepdaughter, Bonnie Warrington and her husband Ron, Youngstown; six grandchildren, Jennifer and Michael Petrinyak, Brandy Panning, Cassie and Andrew Warrington and William Panning; and two great-grandchildren, Audrey Arone and Amber Arone; a brother, Robert Orr, Hubbard; and a sister, Alice Mayle, Youngstown.

A brother, William Orr and a sister, Pearl First, are deceased.

Jack E. Reagle

1975 Hickory High

alum was lawyer

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. -- A memorial service will be held Sunday for Jack E. Reagle of 5101 Marsha St., Bakersfield, Calif., formerly of Hermitage. He died unexpectedly Sunday (10-13-02) in his residence following an apparent heart attack. He was 45.

Mr. Reagle was born Feb. 26, 1957, in Sharon, a son of James L. and Barbara J. Sarchett Reagle.

A 1975 alumnus of Hickory High School in Hermitage, he also graduated from Edinboro University of Pennsylvania and Akron University School of Law.

Mr. Reagle was a member of Clark Trinity United Methodist Church and was in the private practice of law in Bakersfield.

He is survived by: two brothers, Dr. Robert R. Reagle, Rochester Hills, Mich.; and James A. Reagle, Hermitage; a niece, Mara Reagle; and a nephew, Matthew Reagle, both Hermitage; and two nephews, Robbie and Ryan Reagle, both Rochester Hills.

He was preceded in death by his parents.
