Ethel L. Hall
Ex-Sharon homemaker was longtime church member

Ethel L. Hall, 52 S. Mercer Ave., Sharpsville, formerly of 473 Wengler Ave., Sharon, died at 5:55 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 17, 2002, in Clepper Manor, Sharon, after an extended illness. She was 85.

Mrs. Hall was born Aug. 3, 1917, in Porters Falls, W.Va., to Vern W. Carr and Myrtle Julia Plymett Carr.

She attended Porters Falls school.

A homemaker, Mrs. Hall was a member since 1941 of First Baptist Church of Sharon; and a past member of the Grottoettes organization of Sharon.

She also volunteered with the swim program for the Mercer County Crippled Children's Society and was a past board member of Camp Lend-A-Hand in Conneaut Lake.

Mrs. Hall enjoyed sewing and making quilts.

Her husband, Orien O. Hall, whom she married April 12, 1941, died Jan. 30, 1988.

Surviving are: two sons, Orien O. Hall II and his wife Rebecca, Cypress, Tex.; and Terry L. Hall and his wife Janis, Ashtabula, Ohio; and one stepgrandchild, Jeffrey Sherrill, Atlanta.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Pearl Marie Tice and Agnes Bernadine Winland; and one brother, Robert Manley Carr.

John Lawrence Hunter

Avid barbershop singer had daughter in Sharpsville

John Lawrence Hunter, formerly of Bethel Park and Bridgeville, both Pennsylvania, died Thursday afternoon, Oct. 17, 2002, in John XXIII Home, Hermitage. He was 95.

Mr. Hunter was born July 10, 1907, in West Alexander, Pa., to Robert A. and Alice Craft Hunter.

A dairy farmer, he completed farm animal management courses in agriculture in 1925 at what was Pennsylvania State College and was a member of the Jersey Cattle Club of America.

He was a sales manager at Pascoe Farm Industrial Co., Oakdale, Pa., and an oil- and gas-well leaser for Haddad and Brooks, Washington, Pa.

The member of the Keystone Chorus of the Pittsburgh South Hills Chapter of the Society for the Preservation and Encouragement of Barber Shop Quartet Singing in America was chosen Barbershopper of the Year for his efforts to support the art. In his early years, he was a lead singer in a quartet.

As a 54-year member of Bethel (Park) Presbyterian Church, he served as an elder and on the session, where he was elected as a church pillar.

He was a 33rd degree Scottish Rite shriner at the Pittsburgh Consistory and a 54-year member of Free and Accepted Masons Bethel Lodge 761, Bethel Park.

He belonged to Bethamas Club; and the Bethel Park Retired Men's Club, for which he was a past president.

He loved spending time with his family and friends, playing his banjo, dancing and singing and helping others.

His wife, the former Helen Elizabeth North, to whom he was married for 61 years, died in 1997.

Surviving are: a daughter, Natalie Hunter Macosko and her husband, Cy, Sharpsville; a grandson, Michael Lawrence Hunter and his wife, Sue, Mount Holly, N.C.; three granddaughters, Armella Hunter Diorio and her husband, Dr. Christopher Diorio, Columbia, S.C.; Alida Hunter, Charlotte, N.C.; and Kristen Macosko Dennis and her husband, William, Cochranton; three great-grandchildren, Bailey and Elizabeth Hunter, Mount Holly; and Ryan Dennis, Cochranton; and a daughter-in-law, Darlene Hunter, wife of Lawrence.

Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by a son, Lawrence North Hunter, who died in 1998; a sister, Isadore McConn; and a brother, William Hunter.

Dorothea Stevens Porter Myers

Sharon woman was active in church, other groups

Dorothea Stevens Porter Myers, known to her friends as "Sunny," of 625 Dougherty Ave., Sharon, passed away Oct. 17, 2002, in the hospital of Sharon Regional Heath System. She was 87.

Mrs. Myers was born Aug. 14, 1915, in Milwaukee, Wis., a daughter of the late Ralph Waldo and Aimee Eugenie Arbogaste Porter.

She is survived by her husband, George Daniel Myers, whom she married Oct. 14, 1939, and who lives in Sharon.

Mrs. Myers was a 62-year active member of First Presbyterian Church in Sharon, where she belonged to the Presbyterian Women's Association, the Mariners Class and Mary Wood's Circle, and served as co-chairperson of the church bazaar. She was ordained an elder in 1971.

She was a 1933 graduate of Peabody High School, Pittsburgh; and a 1937 graduate of Westminster College, New Wilmington.

Mrs. Myers also was a member of Sharon College Club, Sharon Country Club and a life member of Sharon Regional Hospital's Auxiliary. She was also a past president and member of the Board of Regents of the Julia F. Buhl Girl's Club.

Besides her husband, survivors include: a son, Daniel Barber Myers, Colorado Springs, Colo.; two daughters, Judith Leighton Myers Boyle, wife of Thomas Patrick Boyle Jr., Hudson, Ohio; and Constance Porter Myers Brewer, wife of William C. Brewer, Red Hook, N.Y.; six grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, Wallace Stevens Porter and Robert Leighton Porter.

Vanchie A. Sherbondy

Hempfield centenarian

was nurse's aide, baker

Vanchie A. Sherbondy, formerly of 6 Quarry Hill Road, Hempfield Township, died at 9:55 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 17, 2002, in White-Cliff Nursing Home, Hempfield Township. She was 100.

Mrs. Sherbondy was born Nov. 28, 1901, in Irwin, Pa., to Henry D. Bear and Mary M. Clugston Bear.

She worked in home care in the Greenville area for four years. Previously she was a nurse's aide at St. Paul Homes, West Salem Township; and prior to that was a baker at the former Pastry Shop in Greenville.

Mrs. Sherbondy attended the former Maysville Church.

She enjoyed traveling, reading, pets, going to church and spending time with family and friends.

Her first husband, Norman E. Mowry, whom she married July 22, 1925, died June 9, 1961. She married James R. Sherbondy on July 7, 1966. He died Feb. 27, 1968.

Surviving are: one daughter, Mrs. Kenneth (Vivian) Thompson, Greenville; two sons, Norman E. Mowry Jr. and his wife Mona; and Duff L. Mowry and his wife Karen, both Greenville; eight grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and eight great-great-grandchildren.

Besides her first and second husbands, Mrs. Sherbondy was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Thelma Mowry; a brother, Albert Bear; and a granddaughter, Barbara Kirshner.

Stephen R. Yanek

Retired Youngstown plant supervisor had son here

YOUNGSTOWN -- Stephen R. Yanek, Youngstown, passed away early Friday morning (10-18-02) in St. Elizabeth Health Center. He was 80.

Mr. Yanek was born Jan. 17, 1922, in Youngstown, a son of Felix and Ann Phillip Yanek.

Stephen had worked for Youngstown Sheet & Tube Co. for 40 years, retiring as a supervisor in 1980.

He was a member of St. Matthias Church, a member and past president of the Holy Name Society and a member and past director of the church choir for 40 years; and also belonged to Slovak Catholic Sokol Branch 108; JEDNOTA; and PLAV Krakusy Post 87, all in the Youngstown area.

He was a World War II Air Force veteran.

His wife, the former Ceil Eplawy, whom he married May 22, 1945, died May 20, 2000.

Stephen is survived by: three sons, Donald Yanek and his wife Kathy, Hermitage; Eugene Yanek and his wife Helen, Hockessin, Del.; and Michael Yanek and his wife Diane, Youngstown; two brothers, Felix Yanek, Youngstown; and Richard Yanek, Canfield, Ohio; a sister, Mary Zivchak, Youngstown; seven grandchildren, Jamie and Christopher Yanek; Jonathan Yanek and his wife Kathleen; and Andrew, David and Daniel Yanek; and Deanne Travis and her husband Aaron; and two great-grandchildren, Amberlily and Jewel.

Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, George, Edward and John Yanek; and three sisters, Anna Blasko, Marge Salata and Helen Liptak.

Gladys L. Mattson

Former Sharpsville woman worked in Oil City

Gladys L. Mattson, Hermitage, formerly of 12th Street, Sharpsville, died at 3:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 17, 2002, in Nugent Convalescent Home, Hermitage, after an extended illness. She was 95.

Mrs. Mattson was born Oct. 24, 1906, in Oil City to Martin Flockerzi and Minnie Kapp Flockerzi.

She graduated from Welsh Business College and was an office manager for Quaker State Oil Co., both Oil City.

Mrs. Mattson was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Sharpsville.

She loved her family, gardening, house plants and the birds.

Her husband, Frank A. Mattson, whom she married May 2, 1931, in Evangelical Church of Oil City, died Jan. 10, 1992.

Surviving are: two daughters, Janet Swanson and her husband William, Hermitage; and Marilyn DeVries Charney and her husband Andrew, State College, Pa.; one son, William Mattson and his wife Margaret, Easley, S.C.; seven grandchildren, William Swanson, Brookfield; Thomas Swanson, Mercer; Nancy Pallo, Sharon; Burt DeVries and Suzanne Combine, both Sharpsville; Amy Sue Mattson, Easley; and Rebecca Trimble, Simpsonville, S.C.; 13 great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Mildred and Frances Flockerzi, both Oil City.

Besides her husband, Mrs. Mattson was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Ella Flockerzi and Grace Perry; and three brothers, Homer, Glenn and Frank Flockerzi.

Emil Shank

Sharon Steel retiree served in Army in WWII, Korea

Emil Shank of 3157 Hann Hill Road, Hermitage, died at 1:15 a.m. Friday (10-18-02) in the hospital of Sharon Regional Health System following an extended illness. He was 79.

Mr. Shank was born Feb. 10, 1923, in Sharon, a son of John and Verona Popa Shank.

He attended Sharon schools and was a member of Christ Lutheran Church in Sharon.

He also belonged to the National Rifle Association and was an avid hunter and gardener.

He had been employed at the former Sharon Steel Corp.'s Farrell plant as a ram driver for 39 years, retiring in 1983.

He was a World War II U.S. Army veteran, having served in India, Burma and China. He was later recalled to serve during the Korean conflict.

He is survived by his wife, the former Eileen M. Henning, whom he married Sept. 10, 1949.

Also surviving are: a daughter, Emily E. King, Hermitage; his grandchildren, Heather and Christopher King, both Hermitage; and Thomas E. Shank, Victoria R. Shank and Samantha M. Shank, all Hermitage; and three brothers, Stephan Shank, Florida; Philip Shank, Masury; and Andrew Shank, Hermitage.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Thomas E. Shank, who passed away in March 1991; two sisters, Rosa Shank and Louise Kindsvater; three brothers, Samuel and John Shank; and Ezekial Shank, the latter of whom died in the Battle of the Bulge; and an infant sister, Eva Shank.

Harry L. 'Sandy' Patton Sr.

Farmer, dairy supervisor was Sandy Lake worker

Harry L. "Sandy" Patton Sr. of 18 Patton Road, Sandy Lake, died Friday morning, Oct. 18, 2002, in United Community Hospital, Pine Township. He was 94.

Mr. Patton was born May 1, 1908, in Sandy Township to Elmer Melvin and Ella E. Barber Patton.

A graduate of Currier School, Mr. Patton was employed by Meadow Gold Dairy as a supervisor for 37 years; by PennDOT for one year; and as a maintenance supervisor for Sandy Lake borough for seven years. He also farmed for 61 years.

He was affiliated with the Protestant church and was a member of Sandy Lake Grange.

Mr. Patton married Elizabeth G. Greggs on March 17, 1930. She survives.

Also surviving are: a daughter, Mrs. Richard (Virginia) Butala, Sandy Lake; and a son, Harry L. Patton Jr. and his wife Ethel, also Sandy Lake.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Jaretta Patton; an infant sister, Adeline Patton; and three brothers, John, Glenn and Howard Patton.

Marilouise Walsh

Ex-local woman had dance studio, worked in stores

WARREN, Ohio -- Marilouise Walsh of Warren, formerly of Griswold Avenue in Hermitage, passed away at 11:45 a.m. Thursday (10-17-02) in Horizon Village. She was 83.

Mrs. Walsh was born March 2, 1919, in Sharon, a daughter of Albert Southard Kibler and Grace M. McFadden Kibler.

She was a 1934 alumna of Sharon High School.

Mrs. Walsh owned and operated her own dance studio in Brookfield during the 1950s. She had also worked for the former Sharon Store in downtown Sharon for several years and at the Picture Barn and One Hour Photo, both in the Shenango Valley Mall, Hermitage.

She was a member of Church of Notre Dame in Hermitage.

Mrs. Walsh enjoyed playing cards, especially bridge, and belonged to several bridge clubs. She was previously a member of Sharon Junior Women's Club.

Her husband, George Vincent Walsh, passed away Sept. 8, 1968.

Surviving are: her two daughters, Patricia A. Piccirilli, Sharon; and Mary Carole Wilcox and her companion, Paul Porter, Hermitage; and two sons, Gerald Michael Walsh, Dothan, Ala.; and George Vincent Walsh Jr. and his wife Debbie, Port Jervis, N.Y. She also leaves 11 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Besides her husband, her parents and a sister, Yvonne Kibler, preceded her in death.

Former Stoneboro man

was retired machinist

MENTOR, Ohio -- Robert J. Young Jr., Willoughby, Ohio, formerly of Stoneboro, died early Friday morning, Oct. 18, 2002, in Heartland of Mentor Nursing Home. He was 90.

Born Dec. 25, 1911, in Stoneboro, Mr. Young was a son of Robert J. Young Sr. and Genevieve Smeltzer Young.

He lived in Stoneboro prior to moving to Willowick, Ohio, in 1953 and to Willoughby in 1962.

He was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Willoughby.

He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren.

A retired machinist, Mr. Young was employed by the former Conrail Railroad at the Collinwood yards in Cleveland, before his retirement in 1972.

Survivors are: his wife of 63 years, the former Eugertha A. Swift; two sons, Richard Young and his wife Colendra, Atascadera, Calif.; and Ronald Young and his wife Patricia, Willoughby; two daughters, Roberta Schultz and her husband Ralph, Painesville Township, Lake County, Ohio; and Reta Cavallario and her husband Anthony, Willowick; and 10 grandchildren, Christine, James, Sarah, Matthew, Anthony, Renee, Travis, Guy, Debbie and Alan; and two great-grandsons, Mitch and Caleb.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Charles, George and Joseph Young; and four sisters, Ruth Young, Jane Rembolo, Helen Hurst and Mary Young.
