Glenda Colleen Misik 40-year Howland resident was Sharon native Glenda Colleen Misik, 9070 Cain Drive NE, Howland Township, died at 7:47 p.m. Friday (10-18-02) in her residence following a lengthy illness. She was 65. Mrs. Misik was born July 5, 1937, in Sharon to John R. Coppage and Helen M. Pierce Coppage. A 1955 graduate of Brookfield High School, she was a Howland Township resident for 40 years. Mrs. Misik was a homemaker and is survived by her husband John Misik Jr., whom she married on June 16, 1956. Also surviving are: two daughters, Mrs. Gary (Colleen G.) Gruver, Howland Township; and Mrs. Dennis (Glenda Lynell) Richards, also Howland Township; one son, Curtis J. Misik, Niles, Ohio; one brother, Jim Coppage, Bradenton, Fla.; two sisters, Beverly Donner, LaGrange, Ky.; and Nancy Figurella, Canton, Ohio; and seven grandchildren. Besides her husband, Mrs. Misik was preceded in death by five sisters, Luella Swegan, Lois Messersmith, Helen Bennett, Anita Wilkes and Charlotte Coppage; and two brothers, Robert and Dale Coppage. Mabel E. Heim Lake Township resident was dietitian at Polk Center A funeral service will be held Tuesday for Mabel E. Heim of 251 Steckler Road, Lake Township. She died at 3:10 p.m. Friday, Oct. 18, 2002, in UPMC Horizon, Greenville, following a brief period of failing health. She was 83. Mrs. Heim was born April 8, 1919, in New Vernon Township, a daughter of the late Warren Milton Slater and Ida Louella Montgomery Slater. On May 26, 1937, she married George S. Keller, who preceded her in death on March 17, 1968. She subsequently married Clyde Heim on June 12, 1970, and he preceded her in death on June 28, 1980. Mrs. Heim was a member of Emmanual Christian Church in Stoneboro, where she belonged to the Missionary Society. She retired in 1974 from Polk (Pa.) Center, where she was a dietitian for 15 years. She was also a member of the Mercer County Homemaker's Group. Mrs. Heim is survived by: two daughters, Nancy Lee Galmish and her husband Richard, Cochranton, Pa.; and Cindy Lou McCoid and her husband Michael, Henrico, N.C.; two stepsons, Thomas Heim and his wife Judy, Coraopolis, Pa.; and Frank Heim and his wife Mary, Cleveland; two sisters, Esther Welton, Grove City; and Carrie Sharp and her husband Alex, Sandy Lake; a half-sister, Beverly Sheetz, Lincoln, Kansas; a brother, Walter Slater and his wife Lois, Fredonia; and a half-brother, Dennis Slater, Missouri. She also leaves many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. Beside her parents and her first and second husbands, Mrs. Heim was preceded death by two sons, John Nevin Keller and Donald Eugene Keller; a stepson, Clyde Wallace Heim; two sisters, Minnie Gravatt and Grace A. Slater; two brothers, Asa Slater and Charles Slater; a granddaughter, Cindy Jo Gill; and a great-grandson, Shiloh Sapier. The family has suggested that memorial contributions be made to Emmanual Christian Church, 4495 Greenville-Sandy Lake Road, Stoneboro 16153.
Julia Delesky Girard homemaker's son lives in West Middlesex GIRARD, Ohio -- Julia Delesky, Taylor Avenue, Girard, died Thursday afternoon, Oct. 17, 2002, in Liberty Healthcare. She was 87. Mrs. Delesky was born Jan. 1, 1915, in Youngstown, a daughter of Joseph Malick and Frances Kutyla Malick, who are now deceased. She was a homemaker and a member of St. Casimir Church, Youngstown. She was married to Stanley Delesky on Nov. 4, 1939, who passed away on Oct. 16, 1991. Mrs. Delesky leaves: three sons, Eugene Delesky and his wife June, Austintown, Ohio; Ronald Delesky and his wife Liz, McDonald, Ohio; and Stang Delesky and his wife Connie, West Middlesex; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Besides her parents and her husband, three sisters, Rose Kastello, Stella Malick and Helen Malick; and a brother, Frank Malick, are deceased.
Oscar Anderson Jr. Highly Decorated POW worked 40 years in Farrell Oscar Anderson Jr. of 395 Oak Way, Sharon, died of natural causes at 3:37 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 19, 2002, in UPMC Horizon, Farrell, after an extended illness. He was 80. He was the husband of Mary Louise Williams Anderson. Born on Wednesday, March 22, 1922, in Lexington, Ky., Mr. Anderson was a son of the late Oscar and Alaferra Shell Anderson. He had worked as a boiler house repairman at the former Sharon Steel Corp.'s former Farrell plant for 40 years. He was of the Baptist faith. Mr. Anderson served in World War II as a ranger in the U.S. Army. He was a prisoner-of-war for 14 months in Germany during the war and was highly decorated, being awarded the Purple Heart with numerous other medals. In addition to his wife, he is survived by: three daughters, Sherry Ann Anderson and Jenny Lynn Warrington, both Sharon; and Mary Ella Anderson, at home; two sons, Eli R. Anderson Sr., husband of Donna Anderson, Brookfield; and James R., husband of Christy Anderson, Sharon; and 10 grandchildren, two of whom he raised, including a granddaughter, Heidi Anderson, Sharpsville; and a grandson, Eli R. Anderson Jr., Sharon. He is also survived by eight great-grandchildren. Besides his parents, Mr. Anderson was preceded in death by a brother, John Anderson Sr.
Sophia P. Sobey Sharon High honors grad was Sacred Heart member A funeral Mass will be Monday for Sophia P. Sobey of 365 Frank St. in Sharon. She passed away at 8:15 p.m. Thursday (10-17-02) in the hospital of Sharon Regional Health System following a brief illness. She was 86. Mrs. Sobey was born on Sept. 14, 1916, in Sharpsville, a daughter of Frank and Anna Feltovich Pasco. She graduated with honors from Sharon High School. A homemaker, she belonged to the Church of the Sacred Heart in Sharon. Her husband, John Sobey, whom she married Aug. 31, 1940, passed away in April of 1995. Mrs. Sobey is survived by: a daughter, Judith Banas and her husband Robert, Sharpsville; and one son, James Sobey, at home. She also leaves: two sisters, Mary Wolden and Frances Biel, both Staten Island, N.Y.; and two grandsons, Timothy and Jeffrey Banas. Besides her husband, Mrs. Sobey was preceded in death by three brothers, John and Joseph Smartz; and Frank Pasco; and two sisters, Helen Scanlon and Ann Walko. SOBEY Vernon C. Smith Jr. Industrial engineer, veteran volunteered in community Vernon C. Smith Jr., 198 Case Ave., Sharon, passed away at 9:05 p.m. Friday, Oct. 18, 2002, in his home after an extended illness. He was 77. Mr. Smith was born Sept. 6, 1925, in New Castle to Vernon C. Smith Sr. and Jessie Belle Westlake Smith. He was a 1943 graduate of Sharon High School. Vern began his work experience at what is now The Herald newspaper in Sharon and was a draftsman at the former Sharon Transformer Division of Westinghouse Electric Corp. He was also employed at Reactive Metals in Niles, Ohio. After graduating from Youngstown State University in 1958 with a degree in industrial engineering, he joined the former Sawhill Tubular Products. In 1963, Vern was promoted to general superintendent of three local divisions of Sawhill, and in 1964, was honored in Steel Magazine's "Men of Industry." In 1971, he was employed as a manager of industrial engineering at Pittsburgh Tube Co. After three years, he returned to the Sharon area as assistant vice-president of Wheatland Tube Co. and remained there until his retirement in 1993. As a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Coast Guard as a signalman, he was involved in the pursuit of U-boats in the North Atlantic. After V-E Day, he was stationed in the Pacific theater with his last assignment joining occupational forces in Japan. Vernon was a very prominent member of our community. He served as toastmaster and master of ceremonies for many local and regional associations and was a member of several clubs and organizations. He served as recording secretary, vice-president and president of the University Club. For the Pymatuning Century Club, he served as vice-president in 1965 and president for two years following. In 1966, Vern was appointed to Sharon School District Authority. He also sat on the board of directors for Sharon Country Club and on the board of directors for Mercer County Crippled Children and Adult Society. It was at the Crippled Children and Adult Society that he assisted with starting a scout troop for the children. He was the troop chairman and institutional representative for the troop. Vernon was an active member of the Kiwanis Club and was elected to the board of directors in 1967. In 1990, he was the recipient of the Legion of Honor Award. He was also active in the Shenango Valley Chamber of Commerce where he held the office of president on 1987. Being an active member of the Shenango Valley Urban League, Vern served on the board of directors and as vice president. He was also chairman of the Development Committee for the Mercer County Education and Rehabilitation Center. He held the office of allocations chairman for six years for the United Way of Mercer County and served on the executive board. A 32nd degree Mason, Vern was a member for more than 50 years of Free and Accepted Masons Shenango Valley Lodge 810 and belonged to Scottish Rites New Castle Consistory. In 1988, Vernon was elected to the board of directors of Protected Home Mutual Life Insurance Co. Vernon was active in Boy Scouts of America with his father, from the time he was a child. He served on the council executive board and was the Camp Development chairman for the Mercer County Boy Scout Council. He was honored with the Silver Beaver Award in 1970. Vernon was a 60-year member of First Presbyterian Church of Sharon and served as a deacon in 1969. In addition to his community activities, Vernon founded the Carlton Company that specialized in fiberglass construction design elements. He was an accomplished wood worker in construction and woodcarving. Vernon was also a boating enthusiast. In addition to building his own sailboat, he refurbished several other boats that he owned. Vern enjoyed model railroads and built his own railroad layouts. He was also an avid gardener. His wife, M. Gayle Moore Smith, whom he married on Aug. 16, 1947, Sharon; two daughters, Linda Gayle Herskovitz and her husband George Herskovitz, Sharpsville; and Patricia L. Giocolo, Richmond, Va.; two granddaughters, Leah Gayle Herskovitz and Abby Elizabeth Herskovitz; and one sister, Shirley S. Stoop, Cleveland, all survive Vernon. He was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, Ronald David Smith. Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of the donors choice.
Walter Supel Walter Supel, 875 Sugar Hollow Road, Hermitage, died at 11:55 a.m. Saturday (10-19-02) in the hospital of Sharon Regional Health System. He was 91. Obituary information was incomplete.
