Lee Barone
GATX retiree was avid golfer, bowler and traveler

A funeral Mass will be held Tuesday for Lee Barone, 427 Indiana Ave., Farrell. He passed away at 10:30 a.m. Saturday (11-9-02) in the hospital of Sharon Regional Health System. He was 81.

Mr. Barone was born March 29, 1921, in Sharon, a son of Joseph Barone and Marguerite Ramazotti Barone.

A 1939 alumnus of Sharon High School, he also studied art at the former Youngstown College.

Mr. Barone retired in 1983 as a stencil cutter from General American Transportation Corp.'s former Masury plant, where he had been employed for 40 years. He was a former officer of the GATX Credit Union.

As a lifelong member of Our Lady of Fatima Church in Farrell, Mr. Barone was a former member of the Holy Name Society and a church commentator. He also belonged to the New Deal Club and the Italian Home, both Farrell, where he participated in their bocce leagues for many years.

He was also an avid bowler and enjoyed gardening and traveling, having been to Italy on four different occasions.

Devoted to his family, Mr. Barone cherished the time he spent with them, particularly during the holidays.

His wife, the former Mary Sarcinella, whom he married on Nov. 27, 1943, at the former St. Anthony's Church in Farrell, survives at home.

He also leaves: one daughter, Sandra Dolby, wife of Frank Dolby, Farrell; two sons, James Barone and his wife Brenda, Hermitage; and William Barone and his wife Deborah, McDonald, Ohio; one brother, Gordon Baroni and his wife Marquita, Jacksonville, Fla.; one sister, Della Trenga, Hermitage; five grandchildren, Tony Dolby and his wife Christine, Christopher Dolby, Jason Barone, Amy Barone and Angelina Barone; and one great-granddaughter, Alyssa Dolby.

Mr. Barone was preceded in death by his parents; and two sisters, Mildred Palumbo and Anna Barone.

W. Wylie Byers
Shenango Township man was plant manager

W. Wylie Byers, Pulaski-Mercer Road, Shenango Township, died on Saturday evening (11-9-02) in The Overlook nursing home, New Wilmington. He was 80.

Mr. Byers was born June 28, 1922, in Shenango Township to James Porter Byers and Margaret Buckwalter Byers.

A graduate of Wilmington High School in New Castle, he retired from the former Steelite Inc. in Wheatland, where he was the former plant manager of the company.

As an active member of Neshannock Presbyterian Church of New Wilmington, Mr. Byers served as a trustee and an elder.

He was also a member of Wilmington Grange.

His wife, the former Lucille Miller, whom he married on June 1, 1946, died on March 27, 1983.

Surviving are; two daughters, Margaret Byers Genkinger, New Castle; and Marcia Franckowiak, West Chicago, Ill.; two sons, Dennis Wylie Byers, Boston, Mass.; and Craig William Byers, Pulaski; seven grandchildren; two sisters, Lydia Gatewood, Pulaski; and Mary Ellen Schepp, Mercer; and one brother, James Samuel Byers, Dayton, Ohio.

Besides his wife, Mr. Byers was preceded in death by his parents and an infant brother.

Timothy Ray Sonntag

Leesburg garage owner was avid outdoorsman

A funeral service will be held Wednesday for Timothy Ray Sonntag, 27 Leesburg Road, Springfield Township in the Village of Leesburg. He died at 9:20 a.m. Saturday morning, Nov. 9, 2002, in Russell, Kansas. He was 50.

Mr. Sonntag was born July 8, 1952, in Grove City to Carl Edward Sonntag and Irene E. Tharpe Sonntag.

A 1970 alumnus of Grove City High School, he later graduated from Vale Tech in Blairsville, Pa.

He was owner and operator for 30 years of Sonntag Garage in Leesburg and was a member of the Board of Directors of the Leesburg Water Association.

Mr. Sonntag was a member of the Springfield Archery Club and Clinton-Irwin Rod and Gun Club.

He attended Grace United Methodist Church in Grove City.

Active in school sports-booster organizations, he performed volunteer work with the Grove City High School football program and assisted in coaching girls' softball.

Mr. Sonntag was an avid outdoorsman, particularly with interests in hunting, fishing and boating.

His wife, the former Debra L. Dick, whom he married on June 16, 1979, survives at the residence.

Besides his wife, he leaves: a daughter, Katie Jo Sonntag; and a son, Daniel R. Sonntag, both at the residence; his mother, Irene Sonntag Moorhead, Village of Leesburg; and three brothers, Lee E. Sonntag and his wife Lois, Grove City; William S. Sonntag, and his wife Meda, Harmony, Pa.; and Dennis C. Sonntag and his wife Sandy, Village of Leesburg.

Mr. Sonntag was preceded in death by his father, Carl; and his sister, Kathie Sonntag.

Richard M. Shiveley, 542 Twitmeyer Lane, Hermitage, died on Sunday (11-10-02) in his home. He was 67.

Joseph Paul Tomko

Sharon retiree was

daily Dum Dum golfer

Joseph Paul Tomko, 864 Bechtol Ave., Sharon, died at 10:10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 9, 2002, in Nugent Convalescent Home, Hermitage, following an extended illness. He was 87.

Mr. Tomko was born April 5, 1915, in Denora, Pa., to Steve Tomko and Dora Tomko.

He attended Sharon area schools and worked for 40 years at Petroleum Iron Works, later becoming U.S. Steel in Masury, from 1937 until his retirement in 1978.

Mr. Tomko was a member of St. John's Church in Hermitage and was a member and past president of the U.S. Steel Workers union for many years.

He was an avid golfer who golfed daily at Dum Dum, Hermitage, for more than 50 years. He also belonged to the former Leland Golf Course in Hermitage for 20 years.

Surviving are: his wife, Helen Terchila Sirb Tomko, at home, whom he married in May of 1970; a daughter, Linda Sirb, Georgia; a sister, Mary Vendemia, Masury; and several nieces and nephews.

Mr. Tomko was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Olga Pasternak Tomko, who died in 1952; three brothers, Frank, Steve and Bill Tomko; and two sisters, Betty Ellis and Margaret.

John Joseph 'Joe' Flynn Jr.
President of Flynn Tire was honored airman

John Joseph "Joe" Flynn Jr., 357 Pine Lane, Mercer, passed away unexpectedly at 2 p.m. Saturday (11-9-02) in the intensive care unit of Sharon Regional Health System. He was 60.

Mr. Flynn was born July 15, 1942, in Sharon, a son of John J. Flynn Sr. and Helen Theresa Coleman Flynn.

He attended St. Joseph Parochial Grade School and was a 1960 alumnus of Sharon High School. He later attended Washburn State University in Topeka, Kansas, and Youngstown State University.

He was president of the Flynn Tire Group, based in Mercer, which he started on Sept. 1, 1964 at 109 Sharpsville Ave. in Sharon. It later flourished under his leadership to include 23 retail stores in Pennsylvania and Ohio and distribution of tires to a number of states including Hawaii. He was well known in the tire industry throughout the United States.

He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1960 to 1964 and was a recipient of the Airman of the Year Award.

As a lifelong member of St. Joseph's Church in Sharon, Joe served as an altar boy in his youth and later as an usher.

Along with his wife, for the past four years he was a foster parent for Mercer County Children and Youth Services. He also had been affiliated with the Bair Foundation in New Wilmington.

He served on the advisory board at First National Bank in Hermitage.

A very generous and modest man, Joe was well known for his acts of kindness and support to many individuals and groups.

A world traveler, he and his wife traveled to more than 25 countries.

His wife, the former Irena Pawluk, whom he married on April 26, 1969, in St. John's Ukrainian Orthodox Church in Sharon, survives at home.

He also leaves: one daughter, Tania Olena Warminski and her husband Joe Warminski, Hubbard; one son, John Joseph "Joe" Flynn III, Sharon; two sisters, Mary Joan Kerbert and her husband William, Monroeville, Pa.; two brothers, the Rev. James M. Flynn, pastor of St. Martin de Porres Polish National Catholic Church, Homestead, Pa.; and R.P. Flynn and his wife Jacquelin, Ohio; and one granddaughter, Aubri Anna Warminski.

Joe was preceded in death by his parents; and infant twin brothers, Martin Patrick Flynn and Michael James Flynn.
