Greenville Metals retiree, was farmer, Army veteran

Edward C. Miller of 273 Bend Road, Wilmington Township, died at 10:40 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 12, 2002, in Jameson Memorial Hospital, New Castle. He was 74.

Mr. Miller was born Sept. 11, 1928, in Wilmington Township to Allan W. Miller and Josephine Bell Pitzer Miller.

He married Mary Sagenich on June 23, 1951. She survives at home.

Mr. Miller was a farmer and was also retired from Greenville Metals.

An Army veteran, Mr. Miller served in the military police in Germany. A quiet gentleman, he was a pillar and respected member of Neshannock Presbyterian Church in New Wilmington.

He and his wife were especially considerate of shut-ins, frequently visiting the sick in their home. He was also a friend to the Amish.

He belonged to Free and Accepted Masons of New Castle. He was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed his lawn and garden.

Besides his wife, he is survived by a brother, William C. Miller, New Wilmington; and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Allan W. Miller.

George Edward Horstman Sr.

Sharon Steel retiree, vet was fire police member

George Edward Horstman Sr., 422 Blacktown Road, Pine Township, died at 12:45 a.m. Monday, Nov. 11, 2002, in Orchard Manor, Pine Township. He was 73.

Mr. Horstman was born Oct. 29, 1929, in Herman, Butler County, to Clemens Horstman and Regina Birckbichler Horstman.

He retired in 1986 from the former Sharon Steel Corp.'s Farrell plant, where he worked on the track gang for 38 years.

Mr. Horstman attended Center Presbyterian Church in Grove City. A U.S. Army veteran, he served during the Korean conflict.

He was a member of the Mercer County Fire Police, a life member of the Springfield Township Fire Department and was honored as a member of the Pennsylvania State Fire Police Association, serving Springfield Township for more than 25 years.

His wife, the former Anna Belle Christy, whom he married June 11, 1955, died May 20, 1991.

Surviving are: two children, Margaret C. Horstman, Lynchburg, Va.; and George E. Horstman Jr., Mercer; two sisters, Leota Horstman, Mercer; and Velma Perdian, wife of Alfonce, Hermitage; a nephew, Howard "Ronald" Horstman, Mercer; and several other nephews and nieces.

Besides his wife, Mr. Horstman was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Clemens Horstman Jr.; and two sisters, Dorothy Van Zanten and Regina Uber.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Springfield Township Volunteer Fire Department, Box 222, Mercer 16137.

Ralph W. Crawford

Church member was bus driver, Sharon Steel worker

Ralph W. Crawford of 26 Stone Ridge Blvd., Hermitage, died of natural causes at 3:45 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 12, 2002, in the hospital of Sharon Regional Health System after a brief illness. He was 84.

He was the husband of Sara R. Cousins Crawford, whom he married May 11, 1942, and who survives at home.

Born Sept. 13, 1918, in Midway, Washington County, Mr. Crawford was a son of the late George W. and Mary Alice Sharp Crawford.

He attended Mercer schools.

Mr. Crawford had worked in the cold roll and annealing departments of the former Sharon Steel Corp.'s Farrell plant for 40 years. He also had worked for 32 years as a bus driver for Watson's Inc. in Jefferson Township.

As a member of Charleston United Methodist Church, he belonged to the adult Sunday school class and had served on the church administrative council.

Mr. Crawford was a member of Free and Accepted Masons Hebron Lodge 575, Mercer; El Bika Grotto; and Scottish Rites New Castle Consistory.

He was also a past grand counselor of United Commercial Travelers of America Council 589 of Sharon, having been honored as the unit's 2001 Man of the Year.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by: three daughters, Shirley, wife of Gary McCandless, Hendersonville, Tenn.; Roberta, wife of David Bolton, Fairview, Pa.; and Karen, wife of Richard Palmer, Westminster, S.C.; two sisters, Beulah M. Baccus, Hermitage; and Anna June Bagnall, Mercer; three grandchildren, Lori Hayden, Westville, N.J.; Bruce McCandless, Hendersonville; and Kelley McCandless-Oldham, Memphis, Tenn.; and two great-grandchildren, Kendall McCandless and Carter McCandless, both Hendersonville.

Besides his parents, Mr. Crawford was preceded in death by two brothers, Robert and John "Bill" Crawford; and five sisters, Genevieve Locke, Coreita McDowell, Eleanor Driscoll, Georgia Zahniser and Atlanta Jewell.

The family requests memorial contributions be made to Charleston United Methodist Church, 1156 Greenfield Road, Hermitage 16148.

Theodore 'Ted' Bialko

Retired Farrell letter carrier was decorated Army vet

A funeral Mass will be held Thursday for Theodore "Ted" Bialko of Cordia Commons at the Shenango Inn, Sharon, formerly of 2006 Stafford St., Farrell. He passed away at 10 a.m. Sunday (11-10-02) in the hospital of Sharon Regional Health System of complications from a stroke. He was 80.

Mr. Bialko was born Dec. 18, 1921, in Farrell, a son of Joseph and Mary Stasczyck Bialko.

A lifelong Farrell resident, he graduated from Farrell High School in 1939 and retired from the U.S. Postal Service, where he had been a letter carrier for the Farrell office.

Mr. Bialko was a member of St. Adalbert's Church in Farrell.

During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army in the European theater of operations, participating in three campaigns including southern France, the Ardennes and Rhineland. A decorated war veteran, he received the Good Conduct Medal; the European African Middle Eastern Medal with three Bronze Stars; the Victory Medal; and the American Theater Service Medal. He also received the Purple Heart for injuries sustained in Alsdorf, Germany.
    He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5286, Farrell.

Mr. Bialko enjoyed watching and collecting classic movie videos. Some of his other interests were bowling, reading and doing crossword puzzles.

He is survived by: two sisters, Anne Lorenzo, Hermitage; and Florence Krokoski and her husband Chet, Farrell; and one brother, Alfred Bialko, Kennesaw, Ga. He also leaves several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Alberta Walter Martz and Helen Bator; three brothers, Robert, John and Melvin Bialko; and a nephew, Jack Walter.

Dr. Wayne B. Morris
Radiologist was Navy vet, worked in missile design

PITTSBURGH -- A funeral service will be held Thursday for Dr. Wayne B. Morris, Titusville, formerly of Moon Township, Allegheny County. He passed away at 11:30 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 10, 2002, in University of Pittsburgh Medical Center after a brief illness. He was 44.

Dr. Morris was born Jan. 4, 1958, in Sewickley, Pa., a son of William H. and Faye H. Morris.

He was a lifetime member of Blackburn United Methodist Church, Sewickley Heights, Pa.

Wayne was a graduate of Moon Township High School and Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland.

He served five years in the U.S. Navy's Nuclear Propulsion Program as a lieutenant on a nuclear submarine, the USS Flying Fish.

After discharge from the Navy, he worked for Texas Instruments in Dallas, in the HARM Missile Design Program.

Following his father's death in 1986, Wayne decided to switch careers and attended Texas A&M School of Medicine. He did a four-year radiology residency at State University of New York-Syracuse, and a neuro-radiology fellowship at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester, N.Y.

Wayne then bought the radiology practice at Titusville Hospital and, upon recent completion of his contract there, he traveled abroad.

Wayne was engaged to be married to Maria Matugas, planning an early 2003 wedding.

Wayne is survived by: his mother and stepfather, Faye H. and Donald E. Winklevoss, Mercer; his sister, Ellen J. Caines and her husband Conrad L. Caines; and four uncles, Ralph L. Henning and his wife Helen; Raymond E. Henning and his wife Virginia; Melvin R. Henning; and Lavern H. Henning and his wife Mary. He also leaves nine cousins.

Wayne was preceded in death by his father; his maternal grandparents, Henry C. and Blanche Henning; and his paternal grandparents, Howard L. and Ruth Morris.

Sara Blanche Freeman

Retired educator formerly lived in Grove City

The following obituary is being reprinted from Tuesday. The Herald inserted an incorrect photo into the original obituary.

FRANKLIN -- Sara Blanche Freeman, Franklin, formerly of Grove City, died at 9:03 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 10, 2002, in The Caring Place after a brief illness. She was 94.

Mrs. Freeman was born March 29, 1908, in Irwin Township, Venango County, to Fred Hovis and Lottie Baker Hovis.

A graduate of Grove City High School Class of 1925, she was an alumna of what was Slippery Rock State Normal School and attended Grove City College.

Mrs. Freeman retired in 1958 from Valley Grove School in Sugar Creek Borough and formerly taught in Reno Elementary School.

She later retired in 1976 from St. Lawrence Catholic School in Miami, Fla., where she was a principal for 15 years.

As a member of Grace United Methodist Church in Grove City, Mrs. Freeman belonged to the Tru Gold Sunday school class; and the United Methodist Women.

She also belonged to National Retired Teachers Association and Pennsylvania Retired Teachers Association.

Her first husband, Kenneth Gilmore, whom she married May 26, 1930, died July 3, 1936. Her second husband, John R. Freeman, whom she married July 7, 1952, died May 3, 1968.

Surviving are: two stepchildren, Richard Freeman, Jacksonville, Fla.; and Geraldine McCarthy, Franklin; a brother Paul Hovis, Grove City; and 11 grandchildren, several great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Besides her first and second husbands, Mrs. Freeman was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Almeda Grace and Fern Gadsby; and four brothers, Dean, Claude, Ernest and Leroy Hovis.

Russell Irvin Pinckney Sr.

'60 BHS grad, decorated veteran retired from Army

ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- Russell Irvin Pinckney Sr. of 610 Wayward Drive, Annapolis, formerly of Masury, died of lung cancer at 9 p.m. Friday, Nov. 8, 2002, in his home. He was 61.

Mr. Pinckney was born Aug. 2, 1941, in Niles, Ohio, a son of the late Michael J. and Erma E. Gray Pinckney.

He was a 1960 graduate of Brookfield High School. As a youth, he was a member of Mount Olive Baptist Church in Masury.

He was a decorated veteran with 24 years of military service with the U.S. Army, including two tours of duty in Vietnam. Among his numerous awards and honors were two Bronze Star medals; the Army Commendation Medal; the Vietnam Campaign Ribbon with four Oak Leaf Clusters; the Vietnam Service Medal; and the Vietnam Gallantry Medal with Palm.

Following his retirement from the Army as a master sergeant, Russell began employment in 1988 with the U.S. Postal Service.

His hobbies included an array of word games, as well as bowling, watching sports on television and computer technology.

He is survived by: his wife of 30 years, Mary Hall Pinckney; three sons, Russell I. Pinckney Jr., Raymond Hall Pinckney and Rodell Hall Pinckney, all Annapolis; one grandson; four sisters, June, wife of Darrell Gamble; Marlene, wife of Robert Johnson; and Beverly, wife of L.C. Williams, all Warren, Ohio; and Phyllis, wife of the Rev. Thomas J. Bolling, Farrell; and three brothers, Richard Owens and his wife Josephine, Pittsburgh; Stanley Owens and his wife Barbara; and Robert Pinckney, all Warren.

Besides his parents, Russell was preceded in death by two brothers, Walter and James Owens; and one sister, Loretta Mitchell.

Mary Lou Cardella Sekerak

Former valley woman lived

in Florida, had sisters here

BELLEAIR BLUFFS, Fla. -- Mary Lou Cardella Sekerak of Belleair Bluffs, formerly of the Shenango Valley, passed away at 8:47 p.m. Monday, Oct. 21, 2002, in the home of her daughter. She was 75.

Born Feb. 20, 1927, in Farrell, Mrs. Sekerak was a daughter of Joseph and Victoria C. DeMaria Mercurio.

She lived in Florida since 1974.

She was predeceased by her first husband of 27 years, Philip J. Cardella; her second husband, John Sekerak; her parents; and three siblings, Joseph Mercurio, Edith Galarde and Catherine Burdick.

Mary Lou was a devoted daughter and sister, as well as a beloved wife, mother, grandmother and friend.

She will always be remembered for her beautiful smile and loving nature. She was a wonderful caregiver and will be fondly remembered by the many friends and family members whom she lovingly helped over the years.

Mary Lou is survived by: her son, Philip J. Cardella Jr. and his wife Kathleen, Erie; a daughter, Denise L. Leyshock and her husband Christopher, Belleair Bluffs; three grandchildren, Philip J. Cardella III and his wife Diane; Amanda M. Cardella; and Kristin L. Leyshock; two brothers, James Mercurio, Bel Harbor Island, Fla.; and Louis Mercurio, Lake Wirth, Fla.; four sisters, Adeline Guerino, Hermitage; Barbara Greenfield, Canal Fulton, Ohio; Donna Kovach, also Hermitage; and Glorida Marenovich, Sebring, Fla.; and many nieces and nephews.

A memorial Mass will be celebrated for the repose of her soul at 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 16, 2002, in Our Lady of Fatima Church, Farrell, of which she was a former member. The Rev. Donald E. Berdis, pastor, will be celebrant.
