was active in Holy Cross

Cornelia "Nell" Steiner, 100 Cusick Lane, Sharpsville, and a current resident of O'Brien Memorial Nursing Home, Masury, died at 7:50 p.m. Monday, Nov. 18, 2002, in the nursing home. She was 89. Mrs. Steiner was born Dec. 4, 1912, in Farrell to John B. Orlander and Florence Stanciu Orlander. She was a 1930 graduate of Farrell High School and a 1934 alumna of Grove City College, where she earned a degree in business. Mrs. Steiner retired from Golden Dawn Foods with more than 20 years of service as an office administrator. Before beginning her tenure with Golden Dawn, Mrs. Steiner worked in the main corporate office of the former Sharon Steel Corp.'s Farrell plant and had been a substitute teacher in both the Farrell and Sharpsville school districts. She had also worked for Ben Routman Insurance Co. of Sharon. She was a life member of Order of the Eastern Star Chapter 237 in Sharpsville; and an active member of Holy Cross Orthodox Church in Hermitage, where she served as the youth advisor for many years. Her husband, Martin Steiner, whom she married Aug. 16, 1947, died July 17, 1996. Surviving are several nieces, nephews and cousins. Besides her husband, Mrs. Steiner was preceded in death by her parents; and a brother, Ray Orlander. Memorial contributions may be made to the Memorial Fund of Holy Cross Orthodox Church, 750 Maple Drive, Hermitage 16148.

Larry D. Derr

'71 Sharpsville grad was sportsman, Packard retiree Larry D. Derr, 151 Carrier Road, Pymatuning Township, passed away at 9:58 p.m. Monday (11-18-02) in UPMC Horizon, Greenville, following a two-year illness. He was 49. Mr. Derr was born on July 13, 1953, in Sharon, a son of Earl "Wayne" Derr and Mary Goodemote Derr. He was a 1971 alumnus of Sharpsville High School. Prior to his illness, he had been employed as a wire drawer for Delphi Packard Electric Systems for 30 years, retiring Aug. 1, 2001. A sportsman, Mr. Derr was an avid fisherman and hunter. He also enjoyed vegetable gardening and NASCAR. His wife, the former Sheri Kniseley, with whom he has been with for more than 26 years, survives at home. Mr. Derr also leaves: his parents, both at home in South Pymatuning Township; and a sister, Diane Derr, also South Pymatuning Township. Memorial contributions may be made to UPMC Cancer Institute in care of UPMC Horizon, Greenville 16125.

Lois J. Dengler

Retiree of Meadville plant had daughters living here

Lois J. Dengler, Hermitage, formerly of Saegertown RD 3, died Monday, Nov. 18, 2002, in the hospital of Sharon Regional Health System. She was 82. Mrs. Dengler was born June 24, 1920, in Blair, Neb., to Charles Hineline and Carrie Thompson Hineline. She had been employed by the former Avtek Corp. of Meadville for 36 years, retiring in 1981 from the coning department. Her hobbies included reading, word puzzles, crocheting, needlepoint and watching television. She was of the Catholic faith and loved to be with her family. Her husband, Clyde V. Dengler, whom she married Aug. 11, 1945, died Feb. 12, 1989. She is survived by: five daughters, Joyce Secich and her husband Dennis, Sharon; Judith Pavlak and her husband Dale, Seven Hills, Ohio; Jeanette Dengler, Paducah, Ky.; Janet Dengler, Sharon; and Jeraldine Ferencik, Sharpsville; and two grandsons, Jeremy Pavlak and Jordan Pavlak. Memorial contributions may be made to Meadville Public Library, 848 Main St., Meadville 16335; or any library in the donor's local community.

Laura Mae McFarland Sonntag

GC church teacher co-ran gas station, family farm

Laura Mae McFarland Sonntag, 2808 Leesburg-Volant Road, Volant, died at 10 a.m. Tuesday morning (11-19-02) in UPMC Horizon, Farrell. She was 76. Mrs. Sonntag was born May 12, 1926, in Springfield Township to Russell McFarland and Sara Lois Weber McFarland. She helped her parents at McFarland General Store in London, Pa. Later, with her husband, she owned and operated Sonntag Sunoco in Grove City until 1971. Mrs. Sonntag and her husband moved from London to the family farm and in 1964 built a new home, where the family operated the family farm. There she would spend the remainder of her life. She was greatly loved by her husband and children and her life would not be complete without the mention of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was a gardener and a teacher of beginners at First Baptist Church of Grove City, where she was a member. Mrs. Sonntag was also a former member of Leesburg Ladies Club. Her husband, Clifford S. Sonntag, whom she married May 22, 1948, survives at the residence. Also surviving are: two daughters, Sally and her husband Victor Moya-Mendez, Volant; and Linda and her husband Monte Buchanan, Harrisville; a son, Sam Sonntag, at home; a brother, William McFarland and his wife Betty, Leesburg; three sisters, Eleanor Steele, Dayton, Tenn.; and Lois Knauff and her husband Gene; and Cathy McFarland, all Grove City; six grandchildren, Julie Flynn and her husband Patrick, Grove City; Bradley Moya-Mendez and his wife Karen; and Joanna Klabe and her husband Timothy, all Perkiomenville, Pa.; Wage Buchanan, Pittsburgh; and Cody Buchanan and Sarah Lang, both Harrisville; and three great-grandchildren, Shawn Moya-Mendez and Josiah Flynn, both Grove City; and Laura Mae Klabe, Perkiomenville. Mrs. Sonntag was preceded in death by her parents; an infant son; and a brother, James McFarland. Memorial contributions may be made to First Baptist Church, 103 Cranberry Road, Grove City 16127.

Sharon Steel retiree was Sacred Heart member

Daniel H. Bossick, 401 Logan Ave., Sharon, died at 7:20 p.m. Monday, Nov. 18, 2002, in the hospital of Sharon Regional Health System after an extended illness. He was 95. Mr. Bossick was born Oct. 26, 1907, in Sharon, a son of Eli Bossick and Martha Danculovich Bossick. He attended Farrell area schools and was employed for 22 years by the former Sharon Steel Corp.'s Farrell plant, retiring in 1972 as a boiler tender. Mr. Bossick previously worked for 20 years at the former U.S. Steel (Carnegie Steel), Farrell. He was a U.S. Army veteran and belonged to Church of the Sacred Heart in Sharon. His wife, the former Rose Marie Salae, whom he married Oct. 6, 1934, died in 1975. Surviving are: one son, Richard Bossick, Sharon; two sisters, Anna Misik, Warren, Ohio; and Violet Carpenter, Brookfield; and one brother, Walter Bossick, Greenville. Besides his wife, Mr. Bossick was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters, Emily and Gloria Bossick; and Helen Kulusich; and three brothers, Emil, Elias and Eli Bossick. BOSSICK

Lois Marie Cherry Moyer

'57 Farrell grad was active in Friendship Baptist

A funeral service will be held Friday for Lois Marie Cherry Moyer, 902 Norris Ave., Farrell. She passed away at 5:55 a.m. Sunday (11-17-092) in the hospital of Sharon Regional Health System. She was 64. A lifelong Shenango Valley resident, Mrs. Moyer was born Sept. 20, 1938, in Sharon, a daughter of James Donald Cherry and Eleanor Campbell Cherry. A graduate of Farrell High School Class of 1957, she worked for the former Sharon Steel Corp.'s Farrell plant. As a member of Friendship Baptist Church in Farrell, Mrs. Moyer belonged to the senior choir, missionary society, trustee board and kitchen committee. She was an avid bowler and a member of the Coalition of Black Trade Unions. Surviving are: one daughter, Sharlene Moyer, Sharon; one son, Kenneth E. Moyer Sr. and his wife Stacey L., at home; her grandchildren, Damien A. Hancock, San Antonio; Kenneth E. Moyer Jr. and O'Bryan Lampkins, both Farrell; and Melvin Locke Jr., Sharon; two great-grandchildren, Derrick A. and Nina S. Hancock, both San Antonio; a sister, Vera Cherry, Baltimore; two brothers, James Donald Cherry Jr., Detroit; and Alvin Cherry, Baltimore; and a host of relatives and friends. Mrs. Moyer was preceded in death by her parents. MOYER
