Fannie A. Harlan Worked 20 years for New Castle store Fannie A. Harlan died Monday morning (11-25-02) in Jameson Care Center, Neshannock Township, Lawrence County. She was 91. Mrs. Harlan was born April 23, 1911, in Greenville to John and Lavina Kitch Billig. Prior to marriage, she worked for Bell Telephone in Greenville. She was a homemaker and worked 20 years after marriage at Troutman's of New Castle. She was a member of Order of the Eastern Star 105, New Castle, White Shrine and Wimodausis of New Castle. Mrs. Harlan was a member of Unity Baptist Church of Harlansburg and a former member of First Baptist Church of New Castle. Surviving are: her husband, David F. Harlan, Jameson Assisted Living of New Castle, whom she married Sept. 2, 1930; one daughter, Mrs. Robert (Norma Jean) Cathcart, Mercer; two sons, James W. Harlan and his wife, Sue, Phoenix; and Fred L. Harlan and his wife, Carol, New Castle; 10 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. Her parents; five brothers, Earl, Raymond, Bob, Carl and Clyde Billig; and one great-grandson preceded her in death. HARLAN Dorothea L. Havinga Coast Guard vet belonged to Holy Trinity Lutheran Funeral service will be Wednesday (11-27-02) for Dorothea L. Havinga, St. Paul Homes, West Salem Township, formerly of 12 Ridgeway Ave., Greenville. She died Saturday evening (11-23-02) in the home of her nephew in Mount Lebanon, Pa. Mrs. Havinga was born Oct. 31, 1913, in Springfield, Pa., to Charles H. and Alice E. Knauff Breckenridge. The graduate of the former Penn High School in Greenville served in the Coast Guard during World War II. She was a homemaker and member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, Greenville. Her husband, Peter Havinga, whom she married April 6, 1947, preceded her in death. Surviving are: a daughter, Bonnie Breckenridge, Franklin, N.Y.; a son, David Havinga, Salzburg, Austria; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, C. Donald Breckenridge and his wife, Emily; and John K. Breckenridge and his wife, Dorothy. HAVINGA James L. Gealy Retired after 18 years with Foster Grading Co. James L. Gealy, 5693 Sandy Lake-Polk Road, Sandy Lake Township, died at 9:45 p.m. Sunday (11-24-02) in his home after a brief illness. He was 81. Mr. Gealy was born Feb. 12, 1921, in Sandy Lake Township to John R. and Arvilla Turner Gealy. He attended the former Lytle School in Sandy Lake Township. In his early years, he worked at many of the local coal mines as a mechanic and heavy equipment operator. He retired in 1981 after 18 years of service from Foster Grading Co. of Jackson Center. The Operating Engineers Local 66 member was a 50 year member of Free and Accepted Masons Lake Lodge 434, Sandy Lake; and a member of Scottish Rite New Castle Consistory. He was a World War II Army veteran and a lifetime member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7599, Reynolds. Mr. Gealy enjoyed fishing, hunting, camping and spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren. He married Dorothy E. Reed on Oct. 21, 1941, and she preceded him in death on Jan. 7, 2002. He is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Benjamin (Linda) Lewis of Sandy Lake; one daughter-in-law, Mary Gealy of Jackson Center; four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; one sister, Grace Wygal of Portland, Ore.; and one brother, Elmer C. Gealy and his wife, Josephine, of Stoneboro. Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by one son, Ronald J. Gealy; two sisters, Alice Knapp and Clara Jenson; and two brothers, Seymour and David Gealy.
GEALY A. Bruce McCartney Mercer native was high basketball scorer in county CARMEL, Calif. -- A. Bruce McCartney, Carmel, formerly of Mercer, died at midnight on Sept. 15, 2002, in Carmel Convalescence Home. He was 89. "Mac" was born Feb. 7, 1913, in Mercer to Albert McCartney and Celeste Mitchell McCartney. He married Jean Reznor on May 13, 1941. She preceded him in death in 1983. His wife, Jeanne Cook McCartney, survives him in Carmel. Mr. McCartney retired in 1975 from Reznor -- a unit of Thomas & Betts, Mercer, for which he was a quality control manager. Starting in the paint department in 1946, his knowledge of the heating business enabled him to also serve as an expert witness in legal cases for the company. Previous to his Reznor experience, he participated in the family business, McCartney's Ice Cream, and owned a men's retail clothing store, both in Mercer. A graduate of Mercer High School, he was a high scorer for his junior and senior class basketball teams and a high scorer for all of Mercer County in 1931. He served as a corporal in the Army during World War II and participated in the Normandy invasion and the Battle of the Bulge. He was a Little League coach and a former member of the Mercer School Board. He was a choir member and trustee for Trinity Presbyterian Church in Mercer. He was also an avid hunter and golfer. Surviving in addition to his wife are: three daughters, Dorothy McCartney, Cranberry Township; Ann Vosovic, Cupertino, Calif.; and Patricia Hamer, Boulder Creek, Calif.; and five grandsons, Eric, Daniel, Joshua, Jonathan and Matthew. In addition to his first wife, he was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Russell and Verne McCartney; and a sister, Zola Yeager. Bruce's daughters invite relatives, friends and acquaintances to attend a memorial service at 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 30, 2002, in Trinity Presbyterian Church, Mercer, with the Rev. William P. Mary Ellen Ibbs Homemaker was involved in St. Michael's Church Mary Ellen Ibbs, St. Paul Homes, 399 E. Jamestown Road, West Salem Township, formerly of 35 N. Second St., Greenville, and London, England, died at 2:15 a.m. Monday (11-25-02) in the nursing home. She was 85. Mrs. Ibbs was born Dec. 12, 1916, in London to Jack and Emily Butler Costello. She was a homemaker and member of St. Michael's Church, Greenville, where she volunteered and participated in many church activities. Her husband, Charles W. Ibbs, whom she married Oct. 13, 1944, died Oct. 12, 1961. Mary arrived in the United States as a vivacious war bride of Charles in 1946. Prior to that, she was a proud member of the WAAF, the Female Division of the British Royal Airforce, for the duration of World War II. She was a loving mother and loyal friend who overcame many hardships in her life. Her family was very proud of her and loved her deeply. Surviving are: three sons, Michael Ibbs of Stoneboro; Bill Ibbs of Warren, Pa.; and Timothy Ibbs of Kingsville, Texas; five daughters, Mrs. Rodney (Penny) Scales of Dallas; Mary Studholm of Toronto; Mrs. Larry (Kate) Teller of Flagstaff, Ariz.; Teresa Ibbs of State College, Pa.; and Sheila Ibbs, Naples, Fla.; a brother and sister, both of London; 17 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and many loving friends. Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; and a son, Patrick Ibbs, who provided her with loving care prior to his death in 1999. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Michael's School Endowment Fund, 85 N. High St., Greenville 16125.
IBBS James Bernell Goodlin Navy veteran retired from Westinghouse in Sharon James Bernell Goodlin, formerly of 1005 Brentwood Drive, Reynolds, died at 11:40 p.m. Friday (11-22-02) in St. Paul Homes, West Salem Township. He was 73. Mr. Goodlin was born June 13, 1929, in Lovejoy, Pa., to Jennings and Jessie Falconer Goodlin. He served in the Navy for 18 years and made five trips to the South Pole, one with the Byrd Expedition. Mr. Goodlin retired after 15 years of service as a coilwinder with Sharon Transformer Division of Westinghouse Electric Corp. He enjoyed golfing and was a member of Shenango Church of Christ, Greenville; and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7599, Reynolds. Surviving are: a sister, Vivian Davies, Louisville, Ky.; a brother, Alfred Goodlin, Greenville; a half-brother, George Stonebreaker, New Athens, Ohio; five nieces; and one nephew. His parents and a half-brother, William Stonebreaker, preceded him in death.
GOODLIN Charles 'Curley' Fulton Was truck driver 38 years for former Taylor Supply Charles "Curley" Fulton, 25 Lincoln Ave., Wheatland, died at 2:40 a.m. Nov. 25, 2002, in UPMC Horizon, Farrell, after a brief illness. He was 74. Mr. Fulton was born Sept. 7, 1928, in New Wilmington, to Earl and Nellie Wharry Fulton. He attended New Wilmington area schools and worked for the former Taylor Supply Co. of Sharon as a truck driver for 38 years. Mr. Fulton was a member of Our Lady of Fatima Church, Farrell. He was a musician, playing guitar and singing. Mr. Fulton also was a former rodeo rider and enjoyed gardening. Surviving are: his wife, the former Leona Valetich, whom he married March 20, 1948; a daughter, Diana and her husband, Christopher Baroni, of Farrell; three sons, Thomas Fulton and his wife, Marilyn, of Annapolis, Md.; Charles E. Fulton and his wife, Mary Anne, of Fairfax, Va.; and Jay Fulton and his wife, Jinine, of Crofton, Md.; and six grandchildren, Bryn Fulton, Scott Fulton, Nicole Rainey, Natalie Fulton, Jessica Fulton and Brandon Baroni. A sister, Eleanor Parker, and a brother, James W. Fulton, preceded him in death.
FULTON D. Gwendolen 'Gwen' Lininger D. Gwendolen "Gwen" Lininger, formerly of 37 Eagle St., Greenville, died at 1:50 p.m. Monday (11-25-02) in St. Paul Homes, West Salem Township. She was 79. Obituary information was incomplete.
LININGER Norman D. Swogger Worked 43 years for Wheatland Tube Norman D. Swogger, 8133 Davis St., Masury, died at 9:40 a.m. Monday (11-25-02) at home. He was 68. Mr. Swogger was born in Masury on June 22, 1934, a son of Fred and Mildred Palmer Swogger. He was a hook-on for Wheatland Tube Co. for 43 years and retired in 1995. His hobbies included sitting on his porch, going to amusement parks and helping raise his family members. Survivors include: his nieces and nephews to whom he was a father figure, Dianna L. Fox, Donald F. Swogger and Wilma V. Rogers, all Masury; Patricia A. Wagner, Sharpsville; and Gloria Merchant, Sharon; a brother, Donald Swogger, Sharon; and a sister, Mrs. Herman (Marion) Peterson, Farrell. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Robert and Kenneth Swogger; four sisters, Alice May Swogger, Lucy Montgomery, Edith Westover; and Dorris Rouns; and his fiance, Rosemary VanHorn.
