James L. Gealy Retired after 18 years with Foster Grading Co. James L. Gealy, 5693 Sandy Lake-Polk Road, Sandy Lake Township, died at 9:45 p.m. Sunday (11-24-02) in his home after a brief illness. He was 81. Mr. Gealy was born Feb. 12, 1921, in Sandy Lake Township to John R. and Arvilla Turner Gealy. He attended the former Lytle School in Sandy Lake Township. In his early years, he worked at many of the local coal mines as a mechanic and heavy equipment operator. He retired in 1981 after 18 years of service from Foster Grading Co. of Jackson Center. The Operating Engineers Local 66 member was a 50-year member of Free and Accepted Masons Lake Lodge 434, Sandy Lake, and belonged to Scottish Rite's New Castle Consistory. He was a World War II Army veteran and a lifetime member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7599, Reynolds. Mr. Gealy enjoyed fishing, hunting, camping and spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren. He married Dorothy E. Reed on Oct. 21, 1941; she died Jan. 7, 2002. He is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Benjamin (Linda) Lewis of Sandy Lake; a daughter-in-law, Mary Gealy of Jackson Center; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren; a sister, Grace Wygal of Portland, Ore.; and a brother, Elmer C. Gealy and his wife, Josephine, of Stoneboro. Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by a son, Ronald J. Gealy; two sisters, Alice Knapp and Clara Jenson; and two brothers, Seymour and David Gealy. Hazel A. White Homemaker was former tax collector in Pulaski Hazel A. White, Pulaski, died at 10:55 p.m. Monday, Nov. 25, 2002, in UPMC Horizon, Farrell, following an extended illness. She was 94. Mrs. White was born Aug. 16, 1908, in New Castle to Herbert Hoover and Maude McConahy Hoover. She served as Pulaski Township tax collector during the 1970s. Mrs. White was also a homemaker and a member of Pulaski United Methodist Church, where she belonged to the Women's Society of Christian Service. Her husband, Clyde E. White, whom she married Oct. 6, 1928, died on Dec. 23, 1986. Surviving are: a daughter-in-law, Dolores White, West Middlesex; eight grandchildren, Charlene Slavosky and Diana Hoon; and Cindy Heath and her husband Steve, all Union Township; Jeff White, New Castle; Donald White and his wife Diana; and Tammy White, all West Middlesex; Regina Marsteller and her husband Art, New Wilmington; and Rick White, Pulaski; 16 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; two sons, Wilbur and Gaylord White; one daughter, Dora White; one sister, Dora Hannald; one daughter-in-law, Lorene White; and one niece, Ruby Hannald.
WHITE D. Gwendolen 'Gwen' Lininger Greenville woman was historian, musician A memorial service will be held Saturday for D. Gwendolyn "Gwen" Lininger, formerly of 37 Eagle St., Greenville. She died of natural causes at 1:50 p.m. Monday, Nov. 25, 2002, in St. Paul Homes, West Salem Township. She was 79. Mrs. Lininger was born Sept. 9, 1923, in Cranesville, Erie County, to the Rev. Charles B. Anderson and Madolene Blystone Anderson. She graduated from Shingle House High School in Pennsylvania and from the music school at Houghton College in New York. Mrs. Lininger assisted her husband in his former Lininger Studio in Greenville from 1968-81. While there, she was past president of the Triangle Professional Photography Association. Mrs. Lininger was an organist and choir director for several churches in the Greenville area for many years. She also taught piano and organ in her home for 20 years. She was a member of Zion's Reformed United Church of Christ in Greenville. Mrs. Lininger was a member of Daughters of the American Revolution Colonel Crawford Chapter in Meadville and was a provisional member of the Daughters of 1812 in Crawford County. A founding president of Greenville Historical Society, she was a member of the board of directors of the Canal Museum in Greenville and served as adviser of the Restoration Committee for the Waugh House in Greenville. Mrs. Lininger was chairman of the Greenville Historical Society and was a member of the board of Mercer County Historical Society. She served as president of the former Orpheus Club and served for two years on the board of directors of the Pennsylvania Federation of Music Clubs. She was a former member of Order of the Eastern Star Chapter 63 and of the former Order of Amaranth Calvary Court 117, both Greenville. Her husband, Edwin A. Lininger, whom she married April 16, 1944, died July 10, 1983. Survivors include: two sons, Dale Lininger, Tampa, Fla.; and Kelly Lininger, Greenville; a daughter, Mrs. Lee (Gay) Wright, Mercer; two brothers, C.B. Anderson, East Wenatchee, Wash.; and LeRoy O. Anderson, Kent, Wash.; two sisters, Mrs. Cameron (Oleta) Thompson, Fort Walton, Fla.; and Jean A. Brown, Mansfield, Pa.; and two grandsons. Besides her husband, Mrs. Lininger was preceded in death by her parents. LININGER Alvin C. 'Jack' McClelland Retired hospital employee served in World War II Alvin C. "Jack" McClelland, 647 N. Liberty Road, Pine Township, died at 2:12 p.m. Monday, Nov. 25, 2002, in Orchard Manor, Pine Township. He was 81. Mr. McClelland was born Feb. 6, 1921, in Raymilton, Pa., to Frederick McClelland and Arvilla Perrine McClelland. He grew up in the Children's Home, Lewisburg, Pa., and later graduated from Mercer High School. Mr. McClelland retired from the Housekeeping Department of United Community Hospital, Pine Township, and served as a Pharmacist's Mate in the U.S. Navy Medical Corps during World War II. As a member since 1952 of North Liberty Presbyterian Church, he was a Sunday school teacher and superintendent, as well as an enthusiastic supporter of the church baseball team. Mr. McClelland was a 32nd degree Mason and member of Free and Accepted Masons Cedar Lodge 800, Grove City; and Scottish Rite's New Castle Consistory. He also belonged to American Legion Post 393, Slippery Rock; and was a life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars in Harper, Kan. He was also an avid bowler. His wife, the former Patricia June Land, whom he married on May 4, 1921, survives at home. Also surviving are: four daughters, Alice, wife of Edward Edminston, Hudson, Mass.; Juanita Attard, wife of Ted, Granger, Ind.; Sara Webster, Corsica, Pa.; and Mary Wallace, wife of Richard, Butler; two sisters, Martha Miller, St. Cloud, Fla.; and Caroline Berry, New Castle; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Mr. McClelland was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters and one brother. Memorial contributions may be made to the Food Pantry of Grace United Methodist Church, 210 S. McCLELLAND Ann Logan Former Sharpsville woman had worked at Delphi WARREN, Ohio -- Ann Logan, a resident of Shepherd of the Valley Lutheran Retirement Center, Niles, Ohio, formerly of Sharpsville, died at 2 p.m. Monday, Nov. 25, 2002, in St. Joseph's Health Center, Warren, following an extended illness. She was 76. Mrs. Logan was born June 27, 1926, in Sharpsville to Steve and Anna Petrik Dirgo. She retired from Delphi Packard Electric Systems in Warren. Mrs. Logan was a member of St. Bernadette's Church in Masury. Her husband, William J. Logan, whom she married May 25, 1957, died Feb. 11, 1988. Surviving are: a daughter, Marianne, wife of Phillip Burks, Kansas; a son, Patrick Logan, Pittsburgh; and two grandchildren. Besides her husband, Mrs. Logan was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers and a sister. LOGAN David B. Williams Church treasurer, trustee worked at Shenango Inc. David B. Williams, 301 Hamilton Ave., Farrell, passed away at 4:07 a.m. Tuesday (11-26-02) in the hospital of Sharon Regional Health System. He was 74. Mr. Williams was born Sept. 15, 1928, in King George, Va., to Benjamin Williams and Maggie E. Johnson Williams. He was a longtime Shenango Valley resident since 1948. He attended schools in Virginia and was employed for 42èyears at the former Shenango Inc. in Sharpsville, where he was a post mill operator and a safety man. As a member of Bethlehem Baptist Church in Sharon, Mr. Williams was a trustee and church treasurer. He also belonged to Twin City Elks (Improved Benevolent and Protective Order of the Elks of the World) Lodge 187; and Free and Accepted Masons Prince Hall Affiliation Calumet Lodge 25, both Farrell. Mr. Williams was an Army veteran of the Korean conflict. He enjoyed gardening and bricklaying. Surviving are: his wife, the former Phyllis Jean Kellum, whom he married on March 27, 1954, at home; two daughters, Stephanie Sheffield and Monica Williams, both Farrell; one son, David V. Williams, Roanoke, Va.; three sisters, Betty Robinson, Landover, Md.; Phyllis Spencer and her husband George, King George; and Lois Johnson and her husband Dan, Washington, D.C.; a brother, Wallace Williams, Farrell; six grandchildren, David V. Williams Jr. and Devon Williams, both Norfolk, Va.; Devin Williams, Ogden, Utah; Jason Marshall; Tina Marie White and her husband Shawn; and Shadawn Sheffield, all Farrell; two great-grandchildren; aunts and uncles; and several nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents.
WILLIAMS John J. Rowlands Retired public accountant was WWII Air Corps vet John J. Rowlands, 280 Donald Road, Hermitage, died unexpectedly at 6:38 p.m. Monday, Nov. 25, 2002, in the hospital of Sharon Regional Health System of cardiac arrest after an extended illness. He was 79. Mr. Rowlands was born Aug. 14, 1923, in Sharon to John Rowlands and Carrie Bray Rowlands. He was a 1941 graduate of Sharon High School and an alumnus of the former Shenango Valley Commercial Institute in Sharon; the Walton School of Commerce; and Youngstown State University. Mr. Rowlands was a well-known public accountant, beginning his career with Falls Auditing in Warren, Ohio. He later began private practice as owner of John J. Rowlands Public Accounting in 1951 and was active for 44 years until his retirement in 1995. He was a U.S. Army Air Corps veteran, having served as a sergeant in the European theater of operations during World War II. He participated in the D-day invasion of Europe as part of the 34th Reconnaissance Squadron. A 32nd degree Mason and 52-year member of Free and Accepted Masons Shenango Valley Lodge 810 in Hermitage, he belonged to Scottish Rite's New Castle Consistory. He was also a member of Oakland Avenue United Methodist Church in Sharon. His wife, the former Pauline J. Karpinko, whom he married on Nov. 6, 1948, survives at home. Also surviving are: one nephew, Richard L. Gaines, Burghill; and five cousins, Jean Hetric and David Moses, both Hermitage; Karen Brown Tornstrom, Linda Brown Atkins and Sherri Brown Whetzel, all Ohio. He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Thelma Mae Gaines; and a nephew, Robert Gaines.
