Beverly A. O'Kane Homemaker belonged to Farrell church Beverly A. O'Kane, 1228 Roemer Blvd., Farrell, died of natural causes at 8:45 a.m. Sunday (12-1-02) in Meadville Medical Center. She was 55. Ms. O'Kane was born Aug. 9, 1947, in New York City, a daughter of William O'Kane and Shirley Owens O'Kane. A homemaker, she was a member of Greater Morris Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Farrell. Ms. O'Kane enjoyed knitting. Surviving are: one daughter, Sakinah O'Kane, New York City; one son, Esnesto O'Kane, Farrell; two brothers, Thomas O'Kane and David O'Kane, both New York City; and an aunt, Gladys Cannon, also Farrell. She also leaves a host of cousins and other family members and friends who will dearly miss her including three grandchildren, Janess O'Kane, Ariona O'Kane and Ausinae O'Kane. She was preceded in death by her parents. Calling hours will be held from 2 to 8 p.m. Thursday (12-5-02) with a funeral service to be held at 10 a.m. Friday (12-6-02), all in New York. Interment will be held in Mount Hope Cemetery in Hastings-on-Hudson, N.Y. H. William Birch Jr. Retiree, WWII vet served in Kiwanis, Scouts, church A memorial service will be held Wednesday for H. William Birch Jr., 33 State St., Greenville. He died at 1:31 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 1, 2002, in UPMC Horizon, Greenville. He was 87. Mr. Birch was born Nov. 29, 1915, in St. Paul, Minn., to the Rev. Henry Birch and Lillian Helquest Birch. He attended Duquesne and Norwin high schools in western Pennsylvania and later took classes at the Art Institute of Pittsburgh. A commercial artist and photographer, Mr. Birch was employed on various jobs. At one time he had his own business, Birch Advertising in Greenville, which he owned for five years. He retired in 1987 from CCI Printing of Greenville. As a member of First Baptist Church of Greenville, he served as a moderator, deacon, Sunday school teacher for youth and adult classes, and as a member of the church choir. A U.S. Navy veteran, Mr. Birch served as an electrician's mate on a minesweeper during World War II and during the Invasion of Normandy. He was a 40-year member of Greenville Kiwanis Club and served as president from 1977 to 1978, and later as secretary for 18 years. He was also active in Boy Scouts of America and Explorer Post 55, Greenville. He served as a scoutmaster for 20 years, then with Sea Scouts for six years. He received the Silver Beaver Award in 1958, and later received the Wood Badge and Scoutmaster Key. Mr. Birch was a member of American Legion Post 140, Greenville, and was a past member of Pymatuning Outboard Club of Jamestown, where he had served as a commodore and secretary. He also did fine work in painting and drawing with oils and watercolors. He enjoyed photography, boating and fly fishing. His wife, the former Marion L. Williams, whom he married Nov. 29, 1940, survives at home. Also surviving are: one daughter, Bronwen L. Birch, Greenville; one son, William L. Birch, St. Paul Homes, West Salem Township; and one sister, Marge Peck, Anacortes, Wash. Mr. Birch was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Gwen Roland; and three brothers, Allan, Milton and Donald Birch. BIRCH Howard F. 'Irish' Gerber Retired Sharon police officer was WWII Navy vet Howard F. "Irish" Gerber, 794 Pearl St., Sharon, died at 11:35 a.m. Monday, Dec. 2, 2002, in his residence after an extended illness. He was 79. Mr. Gerber was born April 26, 1923, in Hermitage to George Gerber Sr. and Mary Dohn Gerber. He was a police officer for Sharon Police Department from 1958 to 1978 and, following his retirement, served eight years as a messenger for the former McDowell Bank. Mr. Gerber was also a custodian for 40 years for Mercer County voting machines. He was a member of Christ Lutheran Church in Sharon; and was a life member of Fraternal Order of Police Rose of Sharon Lodge 3. A U.S. Navy veteran, Mr. Gerber served on the U.S. St. Louis during World War II. His wife, the former Emma Cvelbar, whom he married Jan. 6, 1945, survives at home. Also surviving are: one daughter, Leslee Pordes, Sharon; two sons, Howard Moses Gerber and his wife Karen, Charlotte, N.C.; and Alan F. Gerber and his wife Annette, Garner, N.C.; five grandchildren, Christopher, Elizabeth, Steven, Holly and Alison Gerber; one sister, Susan Long, Greenville; and one brother, William Gerber, Hermitage. Mr. Gerber was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Venetta Kelly and Kathryn Brinkley; and three brothers, Jacob Gerber, George Gerber Jr. and Carl Gerber. GERBER Joseph S. Wolanin Decorated WWII vet was engineer at WE, Wean Joseph S. Wolanin, Mercer, passed away at 7:55 a.m. Monday, Dec. 2, 2002, in UPMC Horizon, Greenville, following a brief illness. He was 84. Mr. Wolanin was born Nov. 1, 1918, in Farrell, a son of Stephen and Mary Wolanin. He was a 1937 graduate of Sharon Senior High School and received his bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Alabama, where he minored in civil engineering. There he served in all offices of the American Society of Mechanical Engineering; was a life member of Theta Tau, an engineer's national scholastic fraternity; and was a charter member of Pi Tau Sigma, a national mechanical engineering honorary fraternity. He was also a member of the ROTC. Mr. Wolanin served as a corporal with the U.S. Army Air Force during World War II. His battles and campaigns included Normandy, Northern France, Ardennes, Rhineland, Central Europe and Air Offensive Europe. His decorations and citations included European-African-Middle Eastern Medal with six Bronze (battle) Stars. He was a member of American Society of Military Engineers and was also a registered professional engineer with the State of Ohio. Mr. Wolanin worked at the former Sharon Transformer Division of Westinghouse Electric Corp.; and Wean Engineering, Warren, Ohio; and was later self-employed. He is survived by: two sisters, Stephany Wolanin Brenick, Sharon; and Bonnie Wolanin Ataman, Masury; one brother, Alexander S. Wolanin, Mercer, with whom he lived; and 15 nieces and nephews and their children. He was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters, Sophia Mae Wolanin and Anne Marie Wolanin, both Girard, Ohio; and Isabel Wolanin Emanuel, Trafford, Pa.; three brothers, Walter C. Wolanin, Masury; Henry R. Wolanin, Hermitage; and Emil Wolanin, Girard; two nieces, Elaine Wolanin List, Masury; and Cathy Lynn Wolanin Garrett, New Wilmington; and one nephew, Walter Wolanin Jr. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Adalbert's Church, 1035 Fruit Ave., Farrell 16121.
WOLANIN Elizabeth E. Strecansky Elizabeth E. Strecansky, Hermitage, formerly of Paul Street, Farrell, died at 11:20 a.m. (12-2-02) in John XXIII Home, Hermitage. She was 79. Obituary information was incomplete.
STRECANSKY Martha Ann Hardy RIDLEY, Pa. -- Martha Ann Hardy, 1550 Glen Ave., Folcroft, Pa., died at 11:40 p.m. Sunday (12-1-02) in Taylor Hospital. She was 68. Obituary information was incomplete.
HARDY Eli Oluich '55 Brookfield grad, lifetime dairy farmer was of Fowler Eli Oluich of 2707 Youngstown Conneaut Road, Fowler, died on Sunday (12-1-02) in St. Elizabeth Health Center, Youngstown, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident on state Route 616, near Coitsville, Ohio. He was 65. Mr. Oluich was born June 27, 1937, in Masury, a son of Steve and Mary Hajduk Oluich. A 1955 alumnus of Brookfield High School, Eli was self-employed as a dairy farmer his entire life. Mr. Oluich was also a U.S. Army veteran. Survivors include: one sister, Mary Oluich, Masury; and three brothers, Samuel and Nicholas Oluich, both Hartford; and Robert Oluich, Masury. He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Margaret Coller; and four brothers, Leonard, Bozo, Michael and John Oluich.
OLUICH Philip Snyder Philip Snyder, 318 Sherman Ave., Sharon, died at 3:24 p.m. Monday (12-2-02) in the Skilled Care Unit of Sharon Regional Health System. He was 71. Obituary information was incomplete.
