Clarence P. 'Buzz' Winder Pine Twp. man was Cooper retiree, WWII Navy vet Clarence P. "Buzz" Winder, 603 N. Liberty Road, Pine Township, died at 6:45 a.m. Monday, Dec. 16, 2002, in Grove Manor, Grove City, following an extended illness. He was 76. Mr. Winder was born June 19, 1926, in Grove City to Guy M. Winder Sr. and Catherine Lucinda Perry Winder. He retired in 1988 from Cooper Energy Services Reciprocating Products in Grove City, where he was a pattern maker for 36 years. Mr. Winder was a member of Grove City Church of the Nazarene; Chapter 161 of Experimental Aircraft Association; Antique Power Association of Mercer County; and Bells and Bills of the Village of North Liberty. A U.S. Navy veteran, he served during World War II and belonged to American Legion Post 584 in Springfield Township. His wife, the former Margery I. Hoffman, whom he married Aug. 28, 1944, died July 2, 1999. Surviving are: three children, Cathy Sue Smith and Gary Lee Winder, both Grove City; and Rick P. Winder, Mercer; a brother, Guy M. "Bud" Winder Jr., Grove City; and three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Besides his wife, Mr. Winder was preceded in death by his parents; and a son, Ronald E. Winder.
WINDER Bonnie L. Gerasimek Hubbard woman, '54 BHS grad was cook at diner A funeral service will be held Wednesday for Bonnie L. Gerasimek of 7279 Sharon Stewart Road, Hubbard. She died at 2 a.m. Sunday (12-15-02) in Allegheny General Hospital, Pittsburgh, following a brief illness. She was 66. Mrs. Gerasimek was born July 22, 1936, in Sharon, a daughter of Theodore and Edith Tribby Crea. A 1954 alumna of Brookfield High School, Bonnie was a prep cook at Brookfield Diner for more than 10 years. Mrs. Gerasimek enjoyed crocheting in her spare time. Survivors include: her husband, Frank Gerasimek, whom she married May 28, 1960; a son, Thomas J. Gerasimek, Atlanta; a daughter, Tammy J. Murcko, Brookfield; four sisters, Bonnie's twin, Connie Yanick, Brookfield; Elsie Long, Geneva, Ohio; and twins, Joan Grinnell, Greenville; and Jean Redick, Sharon; and two grandchildren, Eddie and Kayleigh. Her parents preceded her in death. Memorial contributions may be made to a local humane society.
GERASIMEK William H. Gilliland Sr. Sharon Steel retiree served in United Methodist church William H. Gilliland Sr., 334 Grant St., Sharon, passed away unexpectedly at 1:25 a.m. Monday (12-16-02) in the emergency room of Sharon Regional Health System. He was 84. Mr. Gilliland was born Feb. 3, 1918, in Sharon, a son of Clarence Gilliland and Hazel Stinedurf Gilliland. He was a lifelong resident of Sharon and attended Sharon schools. Bill retired in 1971 from the cold roll department of the former Sharon Steel Corp.'s Farrell plant, where he had worked for more than 38 years. He was an active member of First United Methodist Church in Sharon, where he was a past member of the church board. He also belonged to the Sharon Steel Retirees group. Earlier in his life, he was an avid hunter. Most recently, he enjoyed daily walks to McDonald's in downtown Sharon, where he had breakfast with his friends. His wife, the former Hazel Cline, whom he married Aug. 8, 1938, died March 14, 1981. Surviving are: two children and their spouses, Jacqueline Mattocks and her husband Larry, Orangeville, Ohio; and William H. "Bo" Gilliland Jr. and his wife Marlene, Hermitage; two grandchildren, Richard W. Fraley, whom he reared, and his wife Ann, Masury; and Michael E. Fraley and his wife Jennifer, Sharon; six great-grandchildren, Brandon, Ricky, Courtney, Jacob, Bethany and Isaac Fraley; and his companion, Barbara Weber, Hermitage. Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers, Clarence and John Gilliland. Memorial contributions may be made to First United Methodist Church, 237 W. GILLILAND James Robert Sowers James Robert Sowers, 539 Lincoln Ave., Grove City, died at 1:45 p.m. Monday (12-16-02) in his home. He was 66. Obituary information was incomplete.
SOWERS Ruth R. Rosche Ex-Brookfield homemaker was U.M. church member OVIEDO, Fla. -- Ruth R. Rosche, Clare Bridge Assisted Living, 445 Alexandria Blvd., Oviedo, formerly of Brookfield, died at 5:45 a.m. Dec. 10, 2002, in her residence of respiratory failure. She was 85. Mrs. Rosche was born May 23, 1917, in Plymouth, Pa., to Thomas T. Williams and Frances Coleman Williams. She was a 1934 graduate of East High School in Youngstown. From 1947 to 1995, she lived in Brookfield. A homemaker, she was a member of Brookfield Methodist Church. Her husband, Charles S. Rosche, whom she married Oct. 18, 1940, died April 16, 1993. Surviving are: two daughters, Nancy R. Nail, Winter Springs, Fla.; and Cherie R. Roddy, Creve Coeur, Mo.; a brother, Robert A. Williams, Ripley, Ohio; and two grandchildren and one great-grandchildren. Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, two sisters and a grandson.
ROSCHE Lyla Viola Montgomery Retiree taught in Mercer, was GC church member Lyla Viola Montgomery, Grove City, formerly of West Main Street, Grove City; and Todd Avenue, Ellwood City, died at 1:35 a.m. Monday, Dec. 16, 2002, in Grove Manor, Grove City, following a brief illness. She was 91. Mrs. Montgomery was born June 17, 1911, in Ellwood City to Leonard Vogler and Alice Keller Vogler. A graduate of what was Ellwood City High School Class of 1929, she was an alumna of what was Slippery Rock State Teachers School. Mrs. Montgomery retired after 36 years as an educator and principal, having taught at Mercer Elementary School. She was also a principal at Elport Elementary School in Ellwood City. She was a member of Grace United Methodist Church, Grove City; Grove City Women's Club; and several area bridge clubs. She also belonged to the Business Women's Organization; and the Bell Memorial church, both of Ellwood City. Her husband, Arthur W. Montgomery, whom she married June 24, 1950, died Dec. 29, 1984. Surviving are one sister, Elva Brown, Ellwood City; and one brother, Clifford Vogler. Besides her husband, Mrs. Montgomery was preceded in death by her parents; one sister, Velma Aggas; and three brothers, Ralph, Willard and Walter Vogler.
MONTGOMERY LeRoy Smith Sharon Steel retiree, WWII vet attend Farrell church LeRoy Smith, 352 Florence St., Sharon, passed away at 6 p.m. Sunday (12-15-02) in the hospital of Sharon Regional Health System. He was 76. Mr. Smith was born June 20, 1926, in Sharon to Fletcher P. Smith and Sadie Garrett Smith. A graduate of Farrell High School Class of 1944, he retired in 1986 after 44 years of employment at the former Sharon Steel Corp.'s Farrell plant, where he worked in the finishing department. He attended Greater Mount Zion Church of God in Christ in Farrell. A U.S. Army Air Force veteran, Mr. Smith served during World War II. He was a lifelong Shenango Valley resident. His wife, the former Emma Crim, whom he married Oct. 30, 1948, survives at home. Also surviving are: two daughters, Karen L. Barron and her husband William, Youngstown; and Michele E. Smith, Sharon; two sons, LeRoy Smith II and his wife Stephanie, Farrell; and Minister Craig Smith and his wife Fiol, Youngstown; one brother, Nathaniel "Nathan" P. Smith and his wife Gladys, Columbus, Ohio; 11 grandchildren, Shannon C. Yancey, Shaunda C. Yancey, Toney E. Yancey, Tara M. Yancey, Nicole Smith, LeRoy Smith III, Stefan Smith, Craig Smith Jr., Shelton Smith, Julianna Smith and Joshua Smith; and five great-grandchildren, ReSean Yancey, Shaunelle Yancey, Zatona Yancey, Shaune Yancey and Zontrae Yancey. Mr. Smith also leaves two very close friends, Andrew Woods, Wheatland; and Arverdison Hailstock, Sharon; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents.
SMITH Beatrice 'Bea' K. Hilko Sharon woman formerly worked in Michigan Beatrice "Bea" K. Hilko of 638 Service Ave., Sharon, died peacefully at 12:45 p.m. Sunday (12-15-02) in her residence with her son, Michael and family of Houston, Texas, at her side. She was 71. Mrs. Hilko was born Nov. 1, 1931, in Farrell, a daughter of Michael F. and Anne Roskos Kolesar. A high school graduate, she also attended Thiel College in Greenville. She was a member of Sts. Peter and Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church in Sharon. Mrs. Hilko had been employed as a medical technologist with Kalamazoo, Mich., Health Department for 21 years. While in Kalamazoo, she spent her time raising her only son, Michael, and returned to Sharon to care for her elderly parents. She was very active in her social life, bowling, traveling and cheering for her Pirates. Mrs. Hilko had numerous friends from "Sea to Shining Sea." She fought a courageous battle with cancer for a year and now is in the loving arms of her Savior, Jesus Christ. She will be missed by all who knew her from Texas, Michigan and Pennsylvania. Her son, Michael, and his family will keep her "spirited" memory in their hearts as she brought so very much to their lives.
Her family thanks all for the "special efforts" in making her final days as comfortable as possible.
HILKO Rev. William James Maloney Pastor was Westminster director of church relations The Rev. William James Maloney, 3 Getway Road, New Wilmington, died at 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 14, 2002, in Mercy Hospital, Pittsburgh. He was 54. Rev. Maloney was born May 29, 1948, in Pittsburgh to James Edward and Clarion Lorraine Samuels Maloney. He pursued courses in behavioral sciences at Point Park College, Pittsburgh, earning a bachelor's degree in 1970. Having felt a lifelong call into the ministry, Bill entered Pittsburgh Theological Seminary, graduating in 1973 with a master's in divinity. He was ordained to the ministry of the word and sacrament in June 1973 by the Pittsburgh Presbytery. He served as assistant pastor of Baldwin United Presbyterian Church; was associate pastor and later pastor of Dormont Presbyterian Church; and was pastor from February 1983 until December 1998 of Glenshaw Presbyterian Church. In January 1999, Bill began his tenure as director of church relations for Westminster College, creating a program of continuing education events for pastors in western Pennsylvania and eastern Ohio. He was a current and active member of Shenango Presbytery of the Presbyterian Church of the U.S.A and was a noted preacher, speaker, teacher and youth retreat leader in area churches. He served in numerous community service organizations including Point Park College board of trustees; New Wilmington Missionary Conference board of managers, for which he was a chairman; New Wilmington and Shaler-Hampton-Etna Ministerial associations, the latter for which he was a president; and the Pittsburgh Cleric. He also held various offices in the Dormont and Undercliff Volunteer Fire departments and belonged to the South Baldwin Volunteer Fire Company. He was also a life member of the Dormont fire unit. As a member of the Presbytery, he served as moderator of the Pittsburgh unit; chair of the council and moderator of the Synod of the Trinity; and was a member of the General Assembly Council of the Presbyterian Church from 1991-97; and was chair of the committee of the Office of the General Assembly from 1998-2001. His wife of 31èyears, the Rev. Pamela-Rae Yeager Maloney, whom he married June 5, 1971, survives at the residence. Also surviving are: his mother, Pittsburgh; a daughter, Heather Lynn Maloney, Cleveland Heights, Ohio; a son, James Raymond Maloney, Pittsburgh; a brother, Keith Alan Maloney, Hilliard, Ohio; a grandchild, Briana Nicolle Grattan, Cleveland Heights; and three nephews and two nieces. He was preceded in death by his father.
