NEW YORK -- Dr. Albert Michael Paldino, New York, formerly of Farrell, died Dec. 9, 2002, in Calvary Hospital in New York following an extended illness. He was 59.

Dr. Paldino was born May 10, 1943, in Sharon, a son of Albert M. Paldino and Mary M. McCuskey Paldino.

Dr. Paldino was raised in Farrell, graduating from Farrell High School in 1961. He graduated cum laude in 1965 with a bachelor's in physics and math from Youngstown State University. He received his master's degree in physics in 1968 from Michigan State University, East Lansing, and his doctorate in physics from Syracuse University in 1975. His doctoral dissertation was titled, "Computerized Study of Axonal Structures in the Visual Cortex."

He moved to Bronx, N.Y., in 1975 with his family and to City Island, N.Y., in 1978.

Dr. Paldino accepted a position as a postdoctoral fellow in the Department of Neuroscience at Rose Kennedy Center for Mental Retardation at Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York. In 1977, he was appointed assistant professor and, in 1979, became assistant director of Rose Kennedy Center, where he served until 1984.

He then joined the real estate firm of N. Peter Burton & Co. as a real estate sales person in Manhattan. In 1987, he joined Cimarron Properties Inc., leaving as vice president in 1991 to join Lansco Corp., where he was senior director and associate broker.

Dr. Paldino is survived by: his brothers, Nicholas A. Paldino, Niceville, Fla.; and Frank J. Paldino and his wife Ilona, Brookfield; his son, Nicholas A. Paldino and daughter, Elizabeth M. Paldino, City Island, N.Y.; a niece, Dawnelle M. Paldino-Martin; and nephews Brian T., Christopher J., Frank P., Anthony M., and Matthew S. Paldino.

His parents preceded him in death.

Jane Harshaw Miller
Former Grove City woman belonged to Tower church

ALLISON PARK, Pa. -- Jane Harshaw Miller, Allison Park, formerly of Grove City, died at 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 13, 2002, in The Rebecca Residence in Allison Park, where she was a resident for two years. She was 92.

Mrs. Miller was born Dec. 4, 1910, in Grove City, a daughter of Edwin B. Harshaw and Bess Barbour Harshaw.

She earned a bachelor's degree from Grove City College.

A Presbyterian by faith, Mrs. Miller was a member of Tower Presbyterian Church in Grove City.

Her husband, Cle Miller, died Dec. 18, 1989.

Mrs. Miller has no survivors.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents.

Louise Greleski Hoyt

Hermitage woman was

active in dance group

Louise Greleski Hoyt of 99 Todd Ave., Hermitage, died Sunday afternoon (12-15-02) in St. Joseph's Hospital, Tucson, Ariz., following an extended illness. She was 77.

Mrs. Hoyt was born Nov. 19, 1925, in Eddyville, Ky., a daughter of James and Wilma Jean Morris Bonner.

She was a high school graduate and a member of First Baptist Church in Sharon. She was also an active member of Shenango Valley Sashayers dance group.

Her first husband, Joseph Greleski, whom she married Aug. 30, 1945, died July 9, 1983.

She is survived by her second husband, Emil C. "Chuck" Hoyt, whom she married in 1999.

She is also survived by: a daughter, Bonnie Sallade Stolarski and husband Ray, Cincinnati; two sons, Ralph P. Greleski and wife Linda, Transfer; and Robert J. Greleski and wife Mary Jean, Tucson; a sister, Jean Robinson, Sharon; and four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Jane DeSantis; and five brothers, Walton H. "Peck" Bonner, Doyle Bonner, Harold Bonner, Morris Bonner and Jay Bonner.

James 'Robert' Sowers

'54 GCHS grad retired from Cooper Energy

A funeral service will be held Thursday for James "Jim" Robert Sowers, 539 Lincoln Ave., Grove City. He died at 1:45 p.m. Monday, Dec. 16, 2002, in his residence after a 10-year illness. He was 66.

Mr. Sowers was born June 30, 1936, in Grove City to Clyde W. Sowers and Edith E. Uber Sowers.

A graduate of Grove City High School Class of 1954, he retired from Cooper Energy Services Reciprocating Products in Greenville, where he was a crane operator for 39 years.

Mr. Sowers was a member of Grove City Church of the Nazarene. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and his grandchildren.

His wife, the former Barbara Jean Reddinger, whom he married July 16, 1965, survives at the residence.

Also surviving are: seven children, Daniel William Hardesty, Franklin; Randy Hardesty, Jackson Center; Cheryl Emmett, Greenville; Tammy Reed, Rochester, N.Y.; Pamela Sykola, Hadley; Jamie Bookwalter, Grove City; and Barbara Bookwalter, Mercer; two sisters, Dolores Jean Whetzel, Grove City; and Dorothy Jane Kiester, Mercer; two brothers, Donald C. Sowers and Edwin L. Sowers, both Grove City; 18 grandchildren; and one great-grandson, Jeffrey Lewis Hoffman.

Mr. Sowers was preceded in death by his parents; one daughter, Cindy Lou Covert; and a granddaughter, Gabrielle Elizabeth Bookwalter.

Francis C. Miller

Retiree was ex-supervisor of Springfield Township

Francis C. Miller, 1716 Perry Highway, Volant, died at 1:53 a.m. Tuesday morning, Dec. 17, 2002, in UPMC Horizon, Farrell. He was 89.

Mr. Miller was born March 12, 1913, in Cherry Township, Butler County, to Elmer Coleman Miller and Alma Irene Jamison Miller.

He graduated from the former Cherry Township Country School in Butler County.

Mr. Miller was a Springfield Township supervisor for six years and retired from Pennsylvania Engineering Works of New Castle.

He was a member of Free and Accepted Masons, New Castle; Scottish Rites New Castle Consistory; and Leesburg Presbyterian Church. He also attended New Life Baptist Church in New Wilmington and was an avid hunter.

His wife of 66èyears, the former Anna May McMinn, whom he married June 13, 1936, survives at the residence.

Also surviving are: a daughter, Charlotte and husband Terry McIlwain, Volant; four sons, Clifford Eugene and wife Sandra Miller, Volant; Bruce and wife Donna Miller, Enterprise, Ala.; Theodore LaVern and wife Pam Miller, Mercer; and William Robert Ward, Hermitage; a brother, Leroy and wife Carol Miller, New Castle; and 12 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and a great-great-grandchild.

Mr. Miller was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Grace Wright, who died in 1981; a granddaughter, Lisa Ann Miller; a grandson, Keith Raymond Miller; and eight brothers, Alec Miller, Floyd Miller, Lawrence Miller, George Miller, Milo Miller, John Miller, LaVern Miller and Dori Miller.

Margaret Keckes James

Former Farrell homemaker had more than 70 survivors

POWAY, Calif. -- Margaret Keckes James, 2053 Pamo Road, Ramona, Calif. 92065, formerly of Washington Street, Farrell, died of natural causes at 7:15 p.m. Monday, Dec. 16, 2002, in Pomerado Hospital, Poway. She was 94.

Mrs. James was born Aug. 15, 1908, in Oliver, Pa., to Daniel Keckes and Helen Bartos Keckes.

A homemaker, she was a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Church in Ramona; and the First Catholic Slovak Ladies Association Lodge 153 in Farrell.

Her husband, Elmer M. James, whom she married Aug. 27, 1927, died March 6, 1979.

Surviving are: a daughter, Arlene Lawrimore, Warner Springs, Calif.; two sons, David E. James, husband of Suzanne, Transfer; and William J. James, husband of Rosina, Ramona; three sisters, Pauline Lazor, wife of Michael, Sharpsville; and Mildred Krlin, wife of John; and Ann May, all Farrell; a brother, John Keckes, Youngstown; 22 grandchildren, 40 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
    Besides her husband, Mrs. James was preceded in death by a sister, Mary Griglak; and two brothers, Andrew and Joseph Keckes.

Alayne Hartstein Riley
'79 Hickory High grad lived in Cleveland area

CLEVELAND -- Alayne Hartstein Riley, Chardon, Ohio, formerly of the Shenango Valley, succumbed to cancer at 7:35 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 14, 2002, in Cleveland Clinic after a short two-month battle. She was 41.

Alayne was born April 23, 1961, in Sharon, a daughter of Leonard and Phyllis Rosenbluth Hartstein.

She was a 1979 Hickory High School graduate and an alumna of Kent (Ohio) State University.

Alayne was the beloved wife of Marty; loving stepmother of Kelli Opsitnik, wife of Dennis; and Sheri Martini, wife of Michael; dear grandmother of Syona Tane Martini, all Cleveland area; cherished daughter of Leonard and Phyllis Hartstein, former owner of Higrade Market in Farrell, now residing in Cleveland; and dear sister of Harriette Feld, wife of Chuck, Cleveland; and Howard Hartstein, Melbourne, Fla.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made through the funeral home to Hospice of Cleveland Clinic, 9555 Rockside Road, Valley View, Ohio 44125; or Leukemia Lymphoma Society, 20525 Center Ridge Road, #630 Cleveland 44116.

A funeral service was held at 11 a.m. Monday (12-16-02) in Cleveland Heights.


Viola Britvich
Former Brownsville area woman had son in Hadley

Viola Britvich, Greenville, formerly of Denbo Vesta No. 6, Washington County, passed away at 11:30 p.m. Monday, Dec. 16, 2002, in UPMC Horizon, Greenville. She was 78.

Mrs. Britvich was born March 5, 1924, in Rock Springs, Wyo., a daughter of the late John and Cecelia Hedagus Yager.

Mrs. Britvich was a member of St. Oliver Plunkett Parish in Fredericktown, Pa.

She was predeceased by her husband, Michael R. Britvich; and two sisters, Margaret Yager and Mary Sawyer.

She is survived by a son, Michael "Mickey" Britvich and his wife Kathy, Hadley; and a grandson, Michael Britvich, also Hadley.
